Kent State vs Western Michigan

[Music] Where is Waldo Stadium kalamazo Michigan it is the home of the western Michigan Broncos and the fans have been eager for this show down for a while today two teams set the square off in a Max slug Fest as we'll see the Kent State golden flashion taking on a team looking for its first win the Western Michigan for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth by David poock and Jesse Palmer and guys let's get this thing [Music] [Applause] [Music] started the golden flashes will kick it away first fair catch called for and made [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] here's this offense with a fresh set of [Music] downs leaves it with the back finds that crease and he's got four out to the 29 that's a really nice play it's impressive R it's first down the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little p for your running [Music] [Applause] back after the productive first down play it's second and six from the gun running back on the move and they make the tackle but he has plenty for the first down well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up the running play and they get just enough to keep the drive a lot first down they've got it at the 37 it's first and 10 wide receiver now comes in motion hand off from the gun an excellent Vision to find Running Room there and make a really good pick up before the defense put a stop to it first down physicality wins football games being able to run the football and create balance and and right here just choose up another first down gives you another chance to maybe continue to run the football and I feel like this guy too is just an explosive play waiting to happen his vision his quickness and he's got a burst if you give this guy just a crease he going to hit it and right now he's doing some damage on this [Applause] defense keeping it on the ground with the single back and gang tackling on this dude is a good idea they needed it but he still got the first down first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game motion from the offense try to get the edge with a quick touch pass he is stopped behind the line of scrimmage they'll lose yards on that one got to give the defense credit watching film anticipating they knew that this offense had this play in their back pocket they knew about the speed of this wide receiver and different ways they were going to try to get him involved everybody on defense on the same page playing together and the ball is picked off bringing it back he's inside the 40 the 20 inside the 10 touchdown Kent State what a great play by the defense and paying it off with the interception return the def the DB saw it he thought don't drop it don't drop it then thought don't get caught don't get caught and he didn't the pick six these guys can play offense too now look at this I showed you I can be a wide receiver coach might split him out at wide receiver next week after making that big play but defense great job making the interception and you're right doing something with it don't just slide down don't be content take that thing all the way back Western Michigan offense ready to go back to work this possession will be a test after wandering that long drive throwing a pick six Jesse you're right reys well I think this is really dependent too on the leaders in this huddle right now to step up and help this offense get back on Pace here on this drive yeah and this defense is froing at the mou they're excited they're jacked up they just made a big play they got all the momentum so they're ready to hunt after picking up a couple it's second and eight looking to throw it's Wolfe fires to the wide out complete downfield but when you're throwing these comeback routs man the timing has got to be so good between the two of them because you know the ball is going to be in the air a long time you can't throw it late it's going to get picked that time really nice job getting it out early and the receiver doing a nice job on his route so that the ball was right on him as soon as he turned around yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the Tob run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge [Music] picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second [Applause] down the give to the left side and a good solid pick up before the defense Cuts him down offensive lineman love to run the power why you run power you run power then you can play action you don't want that defense to be sitting there saying it's a pass it's a pass having to pass block every play you got to keep defenses off balance it'll be a run on Third and short now with a great opportunity as they pick up the first down they've got it at the 40 you got to have short area quickness that running back there doing what it takes to make sure he got that first down and the Broncos are marching down the field SP we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up as a defensive guy now you're always zoomed in the qub I mean these guys they're whether they're throwing the football or running it at least they have the football in their hands every time you know where they're going to be and focusing the defense locked and loaded understand what they were trying to accomplish doing a good job getting to the quarterback and then make those physical Hits Count finish those finish those tackles with aggressive hits make that quarterback F you for a whole length of a game from the gun the running back has it he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple I love when you start bringing linebackers up near the line of scrimmage and you start sending them because those guys have serious speed they can come catch anybody up and down the line of scrimmage the linebacker you could tell he had a good clue what was going on he knew it was a run play fired pulled the trigger came downhill and attack the running back and it was worth the gamble but the long pass is incomplete well this defense has been outstanding in coverage early in this game we're just in the first quarter of course they already have an interception they should have had their second right there the Broncos line up to punt it away he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him deep first one is away and boy did he put him work in that loss last week kicking it five times [Music] times here's this offense with a fresh set of downs [Applause] they're trying to get some breathing room from deep in their own territory he's got it down the left side oh look out there he goes he's at the 10 and he eluded the defense and he'll take it all the way touchdown golden FES speed kills this offense they've got multiple guys that can burn you you can see it doesn't take them long to light up the scoreboard and the extra point makes it 14 nothing almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown no return coming he'll call for the fair [Music] catch guys we're about to get another look at this Western Michigan offense to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing on all cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that scheme that you can use against this defense from the 39 yd line it's first and [Applause] 10 look for a man it's wolf he'll take a deep shot here and the ball is caught he's inside the 35 they get him down but this offense is set up first and goal from the nine I know it's early in the game but defensively after that play you know you have to tackle the catch when this guy gets the ball in his hands he is so dangerous after the fact so it's okay for him to make catches just got to get him to the ground quickly now second [Music] Ang they keep pushing forward now back to work on second and goal from the six Yanke Yankee BL jackit he'll run it to the middle looking for the End Zone he bullies his way all the way down to the five yd line all right so now you're in this third down situation close to the goal line and it just feels David like they're going to have to throw the football in order to score a touchdown here I like maybe trying to get the quarterback outside on the perimeter and give him a run pass option I like that too get the and the defense makes a play sacking him back at the 10 man that's just kind of frustrating for an offense you move the ball all the way down the field you got an opportunity on third down and you can't protect your quarterback you get the sack and now it's probably field goal time if you make a field goal oh and he missed it no good guys have missed field goal and nothing changes still a 14-point game and that kind of tells you how The Season's gone for this squad just whether it's the offense whether it's the defense now it's the Special Teams you know missing a makeable kick it's been that kind of Year from the gun he leaves it with the back and knock him down after a gain of three to the 23 down at the 23 y bring it [Music] up after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven on the [Applause] Move got room at the 35 to the 43 yd line and a first down for this offense nice job getting outside right those running backs they get on those tracks they run outside now they're in the open field and so tough those safeties are flying down try to get an angle but you could tell the speed sets him up makes the big play out to the left and he Jes the first guy made him Miss and picked up a few before being brought down you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three [Applause] they'll Run play action starts to scramble to the left heaves It On the Run and the DB making a huge play knocking it away down field no Panic and hesitation by the defense on that play first off nice job getting some pressure flushing the quarterback out to his left and even a better job in the back end covering after that Scramble Play in the dead center of the field as they try to convert this third and short back to throw it's ulatowski moving keeping the eyes down field he's got into the end zone touchdown Kent State they've extended the lead and taking control here in week nine that's number two on the day having a day I mean you know he's going to catch the football and you know he's going to make plays after he catches those are the kind of guys that you feature and you find him and they produce like this you keep finding about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown he'll call for the fair catch [Applause] [Music] [Applause] here Western Michigan has it back as they send the offense onto the field you want to talk about taking the wind out of your sails Drive the ball down the field and miss the field goal David you know what don't leave it up to Kickers execute better offensively I think you move the ball nice you got to keep that in mind but Palmer I think you got to stay aggressive and don't settle for field goal yeah because you got to know there's just no margin for error right now you just have got to be able to execute at a higher level looking for room it's Buckley continuing to turn and move it forward and they're closing in on Midfield it's down at the 48 I like this guy as a running back because he could run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all halfway there on first down it's second and five black out of the gun the inside hand off to the running back and a really short game before he gets a whole bunch of company from the defense now on third down after that run [Applause] to the air it's wolf he fires one Deep Over the middle oh what a grab by the defense looking for more room just an outstanding return after the pick and he'll put that offense in business at the 45 and this is obviously not a great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in this game he's got to do a much better job with his decision Mak got it guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense easy one back in the back field and they'll give it to him at the 35 he's open they've got it inside the 30 they'll mark it at the 28 it's first down I'll tell you what when those little guys make those physical plays like that it kind of jacks everybody up in the Huddle cuz it's usually the guy breaking ankles but he's like breaking tackles now he's giving you some serious energy they'll ride the hot hand listen you you got to be able to know what play to call and what hole to go through like the line blocks for a certain hole good job getting through the hole getting on this block getting a nice positive game making your situation really good on the next down time winding down in the quarter as they come to the line takes a hand off it's Thomas tackled after picking up the first down pick up and that's a first down for the [Applause] offense that's the end of the first quarter K State 21 Western Michigan Z [Applause] and the golden flashes come to the line with a new set of downs Corner showing press they want to be physical here coming out on first down with the play fake quarterback now on the Run still looking it's complete he gets it in touchdown golden fashion a score for the big fell here why are tight ends so effective in the Red Zone well these aren't the guys that are going to burn by you and go for 70 most of the time but when you can use their big boded frames threaten them to run the football be a Blocker in the running game and now you slip him in the secondary make that big play and let's check in with Kevin Conor in the studio Kevin guys let's take a look at what's happening in a great college football matchup Vanderbilt has the lead right now but if this team has taught us anything over the years it's that no lead is safe there in Nashville they're up by seven over Texas we promise to keep you posted on what goes down in this exciting college football matchup oh and how about that I know Kevin and those guys will be keeping an eye on it for [Music] us the give out of the gun and he's brought down after a nice game and I don't care if I get him by two by 20 by 30 four I just I just want to get the first down understanding the situation understanding where the sticks are doesn't have to be sexy but I got to make sure I get to that stick get to the first down Mark a most efficient pick up of six on first down it's second and four I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four they'll leave it with him really nice stop there from this senior leader you runs like this often times are like a boxer in a boxing match obviously it's not a knockout punch but these are body blows and as the game goes on these small game and he throws his third pick of the day his head has to be spinning trying to take it back touchdown Kent State and this defense coming up with point of their own what an interception return look a lot of time left there's a little bit of distance right now being put on the scoreboard there is but it's so awesome when you're a defense and you study all week about what's coming and what routes to be ready for and then you jump the route and you make the plays and you just go get in that End Zone it is so beautiful they're lining up to kick it off after the pick six and that defense will come out feeling it not going to risk a return turn here he'll make the fair [Music] [Applause] catch Western Michigan offense ready to go back to work the big thing now don't get rattled by that last pick six David N it was a big mistake uh obviously the defense took advantage of it but you got to put it behind you Jesse I'm sure you know a thing or two about throwing pick six and and had a rebound I believe I've only thrown one in my life but yes I do because of that singular instance I'll say this you can't let that play Beat you twice you got to go out not try to get it all back here in one play Just execute the offense solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six back to pass it's Wolfe he turns that loose down the right side and it is another interception just a terrible struggle for this quarterback and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick that's number two that's a good year for a lot of people what a day having two interceptions already I might try my hand on the other guy this guy is not somebody I want to mess with they go to the [Applause] ground and how about the efficiency on that one it'll bring up second and four coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that 6yd pick up on first down leaves him with second and four trying play action quarterback extends the play now he'll let one fly down the left side can't hang on in the end zone and that one is going to drive it crazy when he watches it it'll be third down sometimes as a quarterback when you're feeling the Rhythm and you're feeling yourself you just want to keep taking shots right this guy's already thrown three touchdown passes he saw a look he lik decided to Let Her Fly haven't seen a lot a lot of balls falling complete especially deep down the field that one did but I'd expect this guy to keep letting it go he'll take another shot here and this one's going to be incomplete he was trying to make the connection in the back corner of the end zone well guess who they're taking a shot to the guy that's just been torching this defense in the entire first half he's already got over a 100 yards so why not try to add to it and force this defense to prove that they can cover him they did do a nice job right there that's not the last time this guy's going to see the ball throwing his way and it's squatted away it's a turnover on Downs I love when defenses are smart enough to swat the ball down don't go for the pick especially on fourth down they knock it down you get the ball anyways nice job by the defender and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up he's up to 86 yds on the ground and he has his eyes fixed on the nation in rushing the offense getting set for a first down from the 45 they're going to ride this running back and they drag him down but not before he picks up the first down it's so nice as an offense to know you can generate explosive plays by handing the football off to this guy he has got incredible speed to the ground with the back defense there to make the stop after a pick up of two to the 30 oh man there's some big hitting going on in the trenches right now this defense they take a lot of pride in stopping the Run let's keep our eye on them throughout the course of the game and see if they can contain this running attack after run run run now throw they're working that left side and good coverage by the defense just a short gain again this is a running back that can hurt you running it between the tackles and he's dangerous out in space they like to throw it to him out on the perimeter as he picks up a couple yards there throws to the wide out just masterful working that sideline and getting the toe down for the catch and the Broncos are threatening on first and goal they'll try to get it in with the Run he works his way all the way down to the three and the defense is reeling [Music] second and goal for this offense let's go give to the fullback he works his way ever closer all the way down to the one yd line at the one Y Line brings up third and goal as they come to the line they've moved it but they need one more yard on third [Applause] down trying to Surge it in and he takes it to the house touch down Broncos bronos and I love the physicality of this offense it's third and goal it's money time I've got to be more physical than you and that's exactly what this offense just did put the ball on the ground and put it in the inside [Music] they get the extra point on the board but they're still down 357 that drive covered 57 yds for the touchdown and they capped it off with a one yd [Applause] pun oh he's going to take a chance he gets a block he's on the roof and there he goes he will score touchdown golden fashion no guts no glory caught it in the end zone didn't hesitate for a millisecond to take that thing back and boy it it pay off and this is why kickoff returns are so exciting there's so much space between you and the other team flying down the field the only time you can be provided that much space and you could tell he knew what to do with that space kicked on the Jets by Felicia fair catch called for and [Music] [Applause] [Applause] [Music] me guys we're about to get another look at this Western Michigan offense the last time they had it they took it down on the field for a touchdown they can build some confidence that they could go backto back scoring drives here yeah and remember it's not uncommon for offenses to find themselves as the game goes on they had some things not go their way early but they found something last Drive David let's see if they can build on yeah you you you just pick and pick and pick until you find that place where you're like okay this is an advantage I have they clearly and that is his fifth interception a nightmare he is not waking up from and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception if you don't have good Vision you're not going to be a middle of the field safety you got a lot of ground toover from hash to Hash you better be able to see the quarterback you better be able to see routes and break on the football nice job seeing the formation seeing the route breaking on it and making the interception and he does a really nice job finding open space and making a good gain before the stop is made and a nice job by the running back finding face getting downhill making a good run great job finishing with his PS hands it off couldn't really get started there pick up a one to the 35 man that D tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness will they keep it on the ground again here on third down they'll try to run for it the golden flashes get enough for the first down I'll say watching this offense this year one of the things you have to be really happy about is their ability to move the sticks this is one of the top 25 offenses in the country in getting first downs that running back is one of the biggest reasons he is a weapon looking for the end zone and swatted down by the defense to stop the scoring opportunity well the defender got his hand on that one tipped it up in the air offense man they're lucky that one wasn't theread line getting set on second down gorilla gorilla dropping back it's ulatowski going back to the well another deep ball and good coverage and better hands on that shot to the end zone smart offensive coordinators they're going to throw deep balls especially those 50/50 balls you hear about all the time my wide receiver is better than your DB well not on this play if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long try to convert through the air unloads to the wide out misses again it's incomplete and that's three in a row nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look they're third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion three straight incompletions and undaunted they'll go for it on Fourth and 10 he'll try to throw and pick up the first down couldn't find his man and they'll give up the football on down and the offense stays aggressive they try to thr the football and just W on the same page there's an incompletion he could have done a better job I think throwing the ball to his receiver and maybe making it where it's more of a 50 get the ball where he can make a play defense gets the big Stop Western Michigan has it back as they send the offense onto the field one of the most valuable things a quarterback can have David shortterm memory just forget that last pick you dang right clear the mechanism it's over moving behind some players can't do that real well and it leads to more mistakes Jess and you got to just forget about it and move on and I think the coaching staff can help him too David I think you can get the running game going here and also give him some easy throws easy keep it on the ground just sort of a Relentless run getting everything that was available to him and they'll Mark him down at the 40 I know that wasn't a big huge play and everybody's not excited the fans aren't going crazy but those are the plays that in the fourth quarter matter a lot again making you tackle my back making you feel the physicality of the football game through so you get tired and get worn down well it's decision time now for the head coach you probably like the play call third down you're running the ball thinking you're going to get it in your own end you don't now what you do the Broncos will bring the punt team onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way and it'll be down right there and it's it's a great punt obviously he gives himself time to let his guys get down the field get in position remember don't let that thing cross the goal line try to keep it inside the tent nice job down in the football setting your defense up for great field position the give to the tail back open space of the 25 can anyone catch C him and that was a huge run that almost went to the house the defense kept him from scoring that was just an open alley for that back I don't think he was touched once before the tackle so he wasn't even been down in twoand touch no on the move at the 30 hit the gas kid wide open the Hat defense is there to make the stop but he's got the first down and they'll have it first and goal with the six a run great speed great vision elusiveness and David he's tackled down close to the goal line yeah and this offense when you can run the football like this man you will have success especially in the Red Zone trying to get touchdowns he steps and powers and works his way they finally get him down at the two and this offense that's what they do last week he had two rushing touchdowns they're going to feature him they're going to get physical especially inside the 5 yd line you're going to feed this and makes the grabbing the end zone touchdown Kent State K St and it's so underrated the the relationship between a QB and a wide receiver the timing the ability to know where he's going to be and be accurate in the football that's what leads to nice touchdowns Jesse well the chemistry between these two guys has to be great when you're throwing into the end zone because coverage is going to be tight the throw might not be perfect but this is something these two guys have been repping and practice over and over and over and it's paying dividends now on game first down here with time for maybe one more play until the two-minute warning gives it to the back on the draw picks up a useful 5yd chunk out to the 30 yd line we've made our way to the two-minute warning and now they'll try to at least cut a little something off of this lead before the break halfway there on first down it's second and five lasso dropping back it's [Applause] Wolf coming after it and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback it has been said that the other team's quarterback must go down and he must go down hard and he did and often is good too the most you can get to him but great job by the defense rushing the quarterback and here comes the pressure and there he goes down again and they've been waiting for something good to happen with respect to getting after the quarterback right they're outside of the top 100 in the country in sacks per game but finally now you see they're generating this pass rush three sacks on the game so far [Applause] fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way makes the catch wants to make a move up field full dozes it found a lot of running room before he goes out of bounds and what a way to build a little momentum guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense they've been the height of efficiency here in the first half David you got to think they're going to try to click it right down the field here when you're looking at your playbook and this works so well in the first half I'm to continue to do what I've been doing Palmer cuz it's been all gas H that's right strike while the iron's hot too before this defense gets to go in at halftime and potentially make some adjustments show you some different looks in the second half whatever you've been doing it's working keep it up and he's on his way he'll go all the way touchdown golden fashion number how about that second receiving touchdown of the ball game find ways to get your athletes the ball they'll do the rest that's number two they better start playing some better defense of number three is coming soon and they tacked on the extra point they got the late touchdown on the board now about to kick it away and hoping the defense can keep them from answering if you can do that I don't know why you don't do it every time reduced the risk banged it out of the back of the end zone they'll put it in play at the 25 [Music] [Applause] first down for the [Music] offense he'll start this drive firing throwing right tremendous awareness along the sideline and the ability to get the foot down for the big pick up and as a quarterback you know when you're throwing a corner route the football is going to travel a long distance so you've got to have great time you've got to get the ball out of your hands before the receivers come out of his break you've also got to put a lot of air under the pass so the wide receiver can locate it you can tell this quarterback has thrown a ton of these routes in practice looking to go up top on first down pocket starts to collapse and the defense gets to the quarterback you got to be impressed with this defense early in this game guys they've got a big lead because they are getting after the quarterback they've already generated multiple sacks they thought coming into this game they could take advantage of this offensive line and that game plan is working to Perfection they gave up the sack on first down now it's second and 11 back to throw it's wolf going for the big play and he's got it inside the 15 yd line we've got a timeout in the waning seconds of the half maybe a chance to get off a couple more plays running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the break he'll set up to throw but a little time lets it go it is incomplete and now there are 4 seconds remaining on second down they'll try the field goal to get the points before halftime it's good easy call for the ref I wouldn't say they cut into the deficit they sort of microscopically uh edged off the deficit still a mountain mcline and he's going to run it back they finally make the stop but that one will make those halftime stats look a little nicer as we head to the brave first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connor in our halftime update and the Broncos will line up to kick off and start the second half set to KI this one away [Music] and he'll bring it out of the end zone I know he thinks he can house every return but sometimes you just have to take a knee as he stopped at the 14 [Applause] guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense this offense has really been clicking in the game so far Jesse no doubt everything their play caller is dialing up these guys offensively have been able to go out and execute D yeah and it's just maintaining the lead keep doing what you've been doing you got a big lead let's just keep piling it on until they find an answer after the nyd pickup on first down here's second and one the give is to Garcia he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and sometimes for the defense it just takes one play right to create some momentum obviously this guy's been eating him up he's got over a 100 yards rushing on the D but finally David they get something positive here in the Run game defensively but you kind of know that coming in he's going to get his such a great back and he's had a great day need to put more plays together like that right there defense did a great job third and short on the opponent's side of the field they're expecting quick throw everybody they dug their heel on the ground they're able to break on the ball forc the incompletion and despite going 0 for two on fourth down so far they will stay aggressive and go for it here he'll try to throw and pick up the first down and it's knocked away they'll give up the ball failing to convert on Fourth I know the analytics tell me to be aggressive and go for it but in the second half in these ball games the analytics don't work for every single situation and right unleashes one deep almost intercepted they took a shot on first down and just about turned the thing over you got to give this defense a ton of credit cuz they watch the film they watch this offense go up and down on the field this QB throw multiple TS their last game out didn't allow a TV pass in the first half here they are the second half doing a nice job defending the Deep ball breaks the tackle it's really frustrating when you get a guy in a spot he's in the hole he's there to do his job and you can't get the guy on the ground that's your job get him on the ground you know especially a guy that's not a huge back you got to make that tackle you can't make it easy on the offense where now they got a a manageable situation they'll try to move the ch on the ground the Broncos are stopped but not before getting the first down and I just love when guys know exactly where the sticks are you could tell ran with purpose finished through the sticks and got just enough for the first down and a nice job up front too right good communication everybody knew where they had to go hat on a hat work the double teams and get some push hand off from the shotgun couldn't quite nudge it in not sure you could get much closer but it'll be first and goal every offense wants to be able to run the ball and be physical especially on first down and you want to create second and short third and short into the end zone he goes touchdown Western Michigan a quick strike just as we expect yeah and quick strikes are easy when you got such a great field position obviously when the offense starts in such a good spot puts the defense in a bad position and the offense takes and he added the extra point a very it led to the scoring Drive David and those are frustrating cuz you think you might get points and then your defense gives up points this has got to be a complimentary football type deal the offense now needs to provide a little spark and give this defense some hope no doubt David they got to turn the page and they've got to play with a little bit bit more urgency here knowing they've got to get that one back and put a good drive together wants to throw it's owski going for the big play fires it into traffic and is picked off taking it the other way and they capitalize not only on the pick but the great return to give the offense tremendous field position and it's nice to be the middle of the field safy that's my responsibility I own middle if you want to come across the middle I'm going to hit you if you want to throw it across the middle I'm going to do a good job breaking on the football unbelievable job you got to have Vision on the quarterback see it break it go get it give me that int Western Michigan offense ready to go back to work they'll start this drive with a pass throws toward the end zone and that one's incomplete worth taking a shot there but couldn't hook up this passing attack was on fire last week quarterback threw multiple TVs but they got brought back down to earth very quick in the first half of this game so here they are now early in the third bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs [Applause] easy from the gun the ground game and he is just engulfed at the line by this giant defensive tackle it's an offense that takes pride in being physical they try to get it going on the ground but no gain on that one just Nowhere to Run not a lot of wiggle room for the ball carrier this defense came in knowing that they had to match their physicality let's see if they can keep it [Applause] up they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 linebackers trying to create some confusion looking down down field it's owski they'll run the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen passes it just never developed you want to talk about building a drive around a guy first on the ground and now using him in the passing game and you get so much bang for your buck because you can split him out wide you can fake it to him then throw it this is the guy that really stretches the field and makes you decide how you want to defend him a linebacker a safety whatever it is it's usually not not good enough when he's receiving a ball out of the back field and the golden flash headed quickly to the line on fourth down they'll pass for it oh he loves to fire down field and it's incomplete and this defense makes a fourth down stop man that is just a great job on defense there on fourth down making a play on the ball in the air everybody had their eyes on the quarterback but having great timing swatting the ball away and doing it cleanly no pi and as a result that defense has earned a rest they're coming off the field and they say a quarterback's best friend is a good run game and a good running back I think he agrees over 150 yards on the day I don't even think I need a quarterback the way he's been running the football all game long draged down at the 39 but he's got five yds and they'll move the sticks it's a nice run there to get the first down I got to tell you I'm impressed with the stable of backs and the weapons this offense has a lot of different guys can touch the football in a variety of ways but they've been running it very very well in this game so far he off one deep down the left side and it was worth going for a chunk play but the long pass is incomplete good awareness by the defense in this situation on the field you know there's coordinators that like to try to take shots deep down the field and catch a napping but the defense was ready for that one offense in an empty [Applause] set back to throw it's wolf he's not afraid to go deep throw to the end zone picked off and he's brought down to this defense gets the ball back for it own as a quarterback you've got to give your receiver an opportunity to make the play you got to put the ball on his body and that throw gets away a little bit from the QB and that leads to the tip in the interception guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense the lone backs got it got to be smart patient great vision uses all of that to get to the 29 keep pounding away at this defense and make them play the run if you can get this many a chunk they're going to have to commit more guys to the Box more guys to the run then you open it up for the passing [Applause] he's looking for a man on second down makes the grab over the middle and he's brought down at the 40 yd line and that'll be a first down great job by the offense listen the defense is going to sit back in zone you know what you got to do run those crossers across the formation those guys that they're looking at the quarterback they're not trying to pick up receivers all the time make those precise throws right in those holes get those first downs get those big chunks at Midfield he's got room and he's running in the open what a play there and he's got it all the way down to the seven yd line you know in the modern era of college football with everybody throwing it it becomes harder and harder for running backs to put up big time numbers with that last carry though this guy's got a thousand yards rushing on the season Y Yankees from the gun they're trying to get to it and the heat will get home and the quarterback goes down at the 17 you try to catch him off balance maybe on first down and goal right here situation where maybe you sneak in a pass defense was ready got the sack now now you got to be a little bit more creative now that you got the negative play the offense I know you've worked this all week you got to be got some room enter to the goal line touchdown Kent State and the route is on I mean the way this team has dominated this game impressive to say the least and it's cool now because you're kicking the credit of them so bad you start to put the backups in and all them get to get juice and get to get some playing time get some feel good the other side well they're just taking that right Western Michigan 24 no return coming he'll call for the fair catch guys we're about to get another look at this Western Michigan offense mistakes are going to happen as they did on that last drive now how will they respond Jesse and this is the kind of guy who's going to take full accountability that was my bad that's on me I'm about to lead this offense now down the field scoring CL dang I wish I would have played with you I didn't play with many quarterbacks that were just like yeah my bad hey guys I got this sorry about that it was more you should have ran a better route on the ground it's buck b that and picked up six out to the 33 it's going to be important this offensive line is able to get a little bit of push just got to give this guy an inch a little crease and he can make yards for it will they keep it on the ground again here on third down they'll try to bully their way for the first and they'll get it to the 39 yd line and they'll move the chain well the defense knew coming into this one it was going to be a physical game guys are going to have to be great at the point of attack and get off blocks and make tackles it couldn't stop the offense from picking up that first down on that run play good pick up on that play it'll bring up second and four five to six yds a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at that but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't forget about the Run game keep them honest P that rock and how about that interior defense stuck in to run for nothing great team defense on that one play everybody doing their job people winning their one-on ons D linemen staying in their gaps linebackers in DB's filling you just can't do it better fires one high and deep and this is dropped incomplete pass he had a huge gain in his fingers and he couldn't hold on and the Broncos will call on their punt team he's getting a lot of work fourth time he's punted [Applause] tonight a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best [Applause] work guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense you like old fashion grind it up run over him football that last touchdown Drive was for you Jesse that was impressive man great blocking up front and tough physical running by these ball carriers and now you wonder how the defense responds like are they going to get way more aggressive to try to stop the run I got to do something to break the rhythm of that running game after picking up a couple at second and [Applause] eight looking for a man it's owski unloads it left and they can't make the connection I think the biggest issue in the passing game for this offense has been accuracy right the last time this guy took the field he completed less than 50% of his throws and you're seeing that again in this game just hasn't been able to put the ball where he wants it to go they're going to keep this drive going they'll have to make a play on Third and long from the 26 lasso lasso from the gun wants to pass looking left a strike downfield they'll get him on the ground at the 46 and it'll be a first down just beautiful and that's a great feeling as a quarterback when you make that throw it keeps your offense on the field keeps the offense in Rhythm obviously not as good as throwing a touchdown pass but I'll tell you this way better than having to trot up over to the bench and wait for your turn to get another shot quickly out to the tight end it's amazing how fluid and potent an offense can seem when you get a great eight pick up on first down and the tight ends a terrific place to go tight ends nowadays are kind of like cheat Go I mean they just know so much about right here seeing zone no one to sit it down boom positive yards nice positive play for this offense gets rid of it it falls incomplete and will change into of the field to get things started back up that's the end of the third quarter of play with the score Ken State 63 Western Michigan 24 a third down play to get the quarter started DB's right up on the receivers wants to throw on third looking for a deep man hits him in stride inside the T touchdown golden fashes and the beat down has ensued number two they're now in really good shape to get back into the wind column as they extend the lead here late points points and more points this offense has had their way they just keep their foot on the gas keep putting up points keep putting up touchdowns and you know what this is one of those stats days you look back and you're like that guy had 12 touchdowns on the year Well four or five of them might have been in this game [Music] Western Michigan has it back as they send the offense onto the field they just didn't quite find the Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're the more physical team if you can threaten the run and then then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposal after the productive first down play it's second and [Music] six they'll give it to the back rustled to the ground after picking up the first down now I love when players understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to a lot of people you'll see run north south and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's not about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of trying to make those big touchdown runs you know it's so important for offense is to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first down got three on first down it's second and seven looking to throw it's wolf he Loft it high and deep down the left side and they wanted at all on that incomplete pass instead they're looking at third down well this guy must feel like he's run into a buzzsaw in this game he has been under duress all game long that's a big reason why he's thrown multiple interceptions in the game too nothing coming easy to him it's hard to see the field when your internal clock is going off so fast because of the pressure of this defense and that's why they F themselves down by so much here and that pressure just engulfed him a sack for this defense yeah and they get him again this is a offense that you expect them to protect their guy I mean he is a dude that you you know if you give him time he's going to make plays but this defense is making sure he's not getting that time another punt on the way got to make sure those hammies and glutes all activated don't want any muscle PS from [Music] [Music] overuse guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense this has been exactly the way you draw things up David the offense has really been moving the football and it's been great execution they've done exactly what they've wanted to do build the lead now Palmer is a different animal now you got to protect it you can tell they were paying attention in practice this week in the film room because they have gone out everybody right now on the same page the offense has it first and 10 from the 42 they'll give it to him [Applause] again crosses the 30 he got away ripping off a good chunk inside the 25 and they're set up with a first down big reason why his team has the lead right now late is because of his performance running the football well over a 100 yards in this game they knew that they were going to have to really put a lot of pressure on him he'd have to shoulder the load and he has delivered for his offense all game [Applause] long getting some heat time running out and he goes down at the 34 there's been a little bit of a seesaw here the last few plays offense gets a chunk play and then the defense gets a sack great job by the defense there turning the page and coming up with the big one s squir Tim Timber scanning the field it's ulatowski and the pressure is coming in and they get him again man this guy is just starting to take this game over sack on first down sack on second down and now on third down this offense they better identify where this guy's lining up and they better get him double team cuz they can't block it right now he'll need some juice in that arm on Third and long and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down every defense in the country talks about getting offenses in predictable third and long situations where I can bring on more speedsters and I know the pass is coming so I can have more success first boot of the day is on its way he was called on three times in that loss last week and the punt hits ground of the two and goes into the end zone he just missed pinning them right in the shadow of the goal post it'll come out to the 20 the Western Michigan offense ready to go back to work that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have he hurls one deep down the left side intercepted he'll try to take it back he'll finally go out of bounds but he was showing off all the skills after that interception and as a defensive lineman late in the game man when you know it's passed you're pinning your ears back trying to get to the quarterback and DBS are trying to do this pad them stats get the int nice job by this D and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land you got to have that defense you know you can go to in running situations your base defense where you say okay this this is where I'm going to start and I'm going to stop the run stuff it up front my guys play Big up front and if I need to add some blitzes to it later on down the road I can but great job in the base defense making a play got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 defense trying to keep this offense from getting a line on who to block he'll pull it down and that defense pushing him out of bounds after a short gain well great job there by the defense because they weren't able to get him sacked right away but you saw the coverage in the back end nowhere for the quarterback to throw the football didn't get the sack obviously you don't get the negative play but you also don't give up a big one you're feeling pretty good about where you are right now in this dve trying to pick up a first down tuna looking to throw it's owski using his feet to buy time he's going to run it he gets the job done picking up the first down then getting down Hey listen it's important at that position to be able to be good off schedule everything's easy when it's on time you can get the ball out but when things break down and they get off schedule you've got to have a guy back there that can make the right decisions he did exactly that they'll throw it on first down feeling some heat and the quarterback is snowed under and I think if you're the head coach here you kind of got mixed reviews on your passing attack so far because yes you thrown for a bunch of yards and you've thrown a couple touchdowns but you've also given up four sacks now pass protection has not been great even though they've got the lead in this game fires left and it falls incomplete but it could have been much much worse as the defender was right there fourth quarter huge lead I'm not really sure why you need to take that kind of shot you don't you definitely don't need to you can run the clock you can run the football you can uh make sure that you're playing it safe and conservative or you can just go for rub it in your face eat that you know I don't like the other [Applause] coach on Third and long a check down would be the last resort throws toward the end zone touchdown Kent State and The Stomping has commenced they push out that lead a bit and draw much closer to a win here in week n and this always is the debate of where you fall it's your job to stop me or I should get conserved cuz this offense obviously has had themselves a day and apparently their day is not over they're going to continue to keep scoring and the defense better do something about it and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own [Music] 25 guys we're about to get another look at this Western Michigan offense well the good news about this drive Jesse it can't go worse than last time through a pick on the first play no it certainly can't I think one good way David to help your quarterback Turn the Page is just find him an easy completion here and let him get back into a rhythm yeah or find him an easy hand off just hand the football off maybe get the ground game going maybe jump start this offense a little bit I tell you this defensive end not only can he pass rush but he can play the run as well you see him beat the offensive lineman there trying to block him and getting the the Back Field to make that tackle for loss that was [Applause] impressive back to the ground with the running back he get him stopped after a gain of four out to the 28 they made third down offense a key it'll be tested on Third and long from the 28th wide out in motion looking to pass it's wolf looking deep down the right side and that'll be incomplete they certainly weren't afraid to take a shot there and now it's fourth down well trailing this much in the fourth quarter the offense is looking for an explosive play to try to ignite them and get them back in this one but nothing doing nice job in coverage fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way catches it at the [Applause] 15 slips through the line man oh man did that coverage team have its hands full well well not full because they didn't get a hand on him for quite a while great return there guys let's see how it goes this time for the Kent State offense how about the way they attacked the last time they had the ball mixing run and pass and winding up in the end zone Jesse that's why recruiting is so important they've got weapons at every skill position on the Feld any of these guys is dangerous if they touch the football let's see what they do on this drive D and so Palmer I got to take away something I can't let them have everything and have success I got to be aggressive against the run or play for the pass I can't give them everything they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 let's go leaves it with the running back still running at the 40 he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down this guy's been special today coming into this one they thought they had an opportunity really to get him going running the football and he has delivered you've seen the speed the vision his ability to break tackles well over 100 rushing yards in this game and that's why they have a nice lead here late they'll snap this one from the 32 it's first down the give to the back just ran over it that run epitomizes a veteran Savvy senior who knows how to find space that is just demoralizing if you're on defense right you're down in the game it's the fourth quarter you know you need to get a stop and you know they're going to run the ball but you can't do anything about it okay the golden flashes come to the line with a fresh set of downs they'll go to Garcia and maybe he'll get back to the line of scrimmage but no more than that and I can't tell you how much I love seeing Corners being willing to come up and Tackle is so huge for a defense you can't Olay blocks and create space you can't just hang out on the outside you got to go set that edge and conversely I can't tell you how much I hate it when receivers don't want to block you got to do a better job on the perimeter it's not going to be enough in this offense just to catch passes you've got to go execute your assignment that corner should have been blocked and they should have gotten a bigger gain on that outside run and the golden flashes have it with a first and goal Ringo Ringo Corners right up on that line of scrimmage they'll dial up the run on first and goal he's got it down to the one yd line right on the doorstep of Peter I know the passing game sells the passing game is exciting but it's not exciting to get five or six yards of pop on the ground but it will be very successful tries again to get it in and they're going to put another one into the end zone as they just keep piling points on the scoreboard if these guys wanted to make a statement statement has been delivered it's your job to stop them oh don't run the score up well do something about it the defense has to step up and make plays obviously they're not willing to do that so just keep running plays and keep scoring lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point the lead is even bigger and for a quick update let's go to Kevin Conor's in but we got to go uptempo we got to go fast we're trailing big in this ball game we got to put a lot of Drives together and maybe even get lucky with an outside kick offense threatening first and 10 from the 31 he's going to pass they're bringing heat the quarterback bought as much time as he could but the defense got to him and sa and man is that a just indictment of the day your quarterback getting drilled late in the football game this offense has sputtered they haven't found any kind of good Rhythm they haven't done things that that really gives your coach confidence and and makes you want to believe in them this offense has a lot of work to do before their next football game [Applause] receiver looks it in it's complete they make the stop but not before he takes a chunk out of what they need to move the sticks third and I know this football game is over but we got to keep fighting we got to keep finding something some kind of Rhythm in this offense something we can hang our hat on that we do really really well listen the intermediate passing game like this has taken over college football short to intermediate so if they can find some of this it will help their offense mov forward and this defense has put a game together like it is is hard to put all the facets of Defense together run defense pass defense they've been so good man dialed in you could tell they were ready they were fast they were physical they dominated this football game today no good and I guess they wanted to draw a little closer instead they're still way way behind well last Miss field goal is essentially a microcosm of the year it's been for this football team things just not going the right way on offense on defense and on special teams guys it's just been that kind of year after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven the give to the back good job running tough and behind his pads as he gets up to the 38 yd line and there's nothing more frustrating than when you get late in the game and you know they're running the football and you don't stop them it's been that kind of day for this defense they haven't played well they're going to have to go to the well they're going to have to figure some things out practice this week I can promise you will not be a lot of fun with these [Applause] coaches on Third and short the power run here they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one how about that defense in the back field nowhere to go right away you can tell they were playing the Run game all the way and they got in the back field and got the tackle for a loss signals for the fair Catch and that's where they'll put it in play just outside the [Music] [Applause] [Music] 20 Western Michigan offense ready to go back to work this one has pretty much been a bludgeoning but they'll try to finish with something positive late well they ran into a Buzz saw today and I don't think and the heat gets there and they get him down at the 14 yd line we'll see if they can dial up one that works this time on second down from the 14 to the air it's wol here's a throw downfield late a sensational grab down the field there as they try to at least put a positive spin on the end of this game time out Western Michigan and here we go final play of the game right here easy trying to find his man on first down trying to get to him takes a hit
