glad to have you with us from Tampa Raymond James Stadium as a couple of teams get set to square off in the Union Home Mortgage gas barill Bowl there's nothing quite like wrapping up a regular season with a bold Victory it just leaves a good taste in your mouth going into the offseason as we'll see the number 15 team in the country the Oklahoma State Cowboys taking on the 18th rank team in the land the Virginia Tech Hoke glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me in the boo guys we are ready to te it up kickoff team out there ready to te it up in this B game he'll start the return inside the spot and good work by the coverage team to knock down the Return Man so the Virginia Tech hes will be in a hole thanks to that short return and here comes their leader Jesse he just has a way of elevating everybody's play and he's a point guard too so good at Distributing the football finds the open guys and he makes this offense go makes it go and just you can trust him everything is available you're not playing with one arm behind your back you got all guns blazing from the gun they'll try to impose their running game and he's able to shed one tackle and pick a pretty good yardage well guys B season is here always fun to get these non-traditional matchups That You Don't See regularly what do you guys remember about playing in a bowl I think you remember all the moments throughout the season throughout your career and then it's the last time that you ever get these group of individuals together you say goodbye to so many people and it's kind of bitter sweet but always fun Jesse U to to dance with your boys one last time but another thing too I love the Swag Bags personally I love getting the gifts yeah I mean to me David really it was thinking about the tradition and history of these B and the pass rush is effective in they tackle him at the 19 awesome job by the defense not only getting a fast quarterback on the ground but understanding what he wants to do he can take off I got to make sure I got good Pursuit angles and I got to make sure I build rails I can't let him outside I got to keep in the pocket he tries to get outside they get the sack and get a huge loss on that play deep in the season that crisp air all around you and this feels like a must-win game guys this is a game that will impact the college football playoff it'll have Conference Championship implications and it'll have bowl game implications as well David so much riding online and you can feel it man you you can feel the energy the players this week they were on high like you could tell they were ready for the challenge this is going to be an absolute Showdown on the return it's pressling they'll put that return to a stop at the 33 but the offense set up in pretty good field position so Oklahoma State's offense will have its first possession of the game as we take a look at our impact players for this game David what do you look for to make an impact from your leaders your leaders not only have to lead the football team but they got to step up and make plays on the field keep everybody calm these guys typically do really good job of it yeah David and they also generally set the tone for their respective football teams regardless of which side of the ball they play on the teammates look towards them to step up in big games like this unloads to the wide out he's open on the right found a bunch of room and got it to the 44 yd line one of the most difficult things about this slot receiver is his shiftiness and his athleticism he's very very difficult to tackle after the catch wanted to go with it but couldn't find his Target it's incomplete David given the fact that you are a devoted helmet head I'm not sure that you're aware there are a lot of other festivities around the bowl game did you ever experience any of that of course I'm a helmet head yeah a spot on agree with that but here's the thing we did a meat eating contest at the Outback B my senior year which Squad could eat more steak from Outback it was absolutely amazing so I experienced that in all this is a point where you just got to be able to focus the critical down and distances in this game like that third down right there when it's a good throw you got to make the catch you've got to be able to make that play andinia Tech sends the offense onto the field they hope to be able to cash in on this drive David after having to punt it last time yeah and I think this offense needs to start it with the first play you need to be successful and productive on that first play and get you in L predictable situations no doubt too don't you just feel like there's a little bit more sense of urgency on this drive it just feels like they've got to be able to put some points up on the board here give to the back stacked up after gaining a couple to the 23 I'll tell you this is a running back who's very very dangerous and the defense that a good job getting him down there but you got to do a great job game tackling because this is a guy that can break and turn those types of plays into home he puts a lot ofir under it down the sideline ball in the a intercepted never really got that return cranking but the offense is set up at the 30 looking for a productive play on first down he'll do it himself and you can forget running in the middle against his defense really nice job by the defense playing responsibility football making sure the quarterback couldn't make any of his reads making sure the picture is not clear getting downhill getting the quarterback on the ground love the execution there in the screen the running back shows pass protect pass protect last second turns around so he's able to get the ball the dline have already run past him now he can turn up field for a big Gainer out of the gun the inside hand off to the running back able to make his way past the sticks for the first down and the time is going to drain out here in the first quarter we've reached the end of the first quarter and it has been a defensive battle and the stats tell the tal so [Applause] far let's see if the offenses can find a little rhythm here in the [Applause] second they'll break the seal on this quarter here on first down down might as well run him until they stop him he's got it again one thing I've noticed from talking to coaches about their approach to bowl games is how many of them use it as a springboard for next season they try to focus on developing some of the new guys maybe that have joined them for the Bowl practices I mean you get 15 plus extra practices and the defense will Coral the quarterback and down he goes at Midfield ball spotted right at Midfield as they try to convert third and short from the gun wants to pass pass on the way it's picked off not a lot on the return but they can live with that as they got it at the 49 QB never saw the defender he's staring his receiver down telegraphing his throw and the DB jumped all over that we're about to get another look at this hookie offense boy they hope this next Drive is more productive after throwing a pick last time Jesse Yeah and the coaches did a good job on the sideline there just talking to the Young quarterback and making sure he's able to turn the page calm him down to go out and refocus this drive yeah and some people do that better than others but you got to show some trust in him maybe get the ground game going help around him a little bit with this system and they'll bring him down after a short pick up the Run game just has not been working for this offense all game long we saw it on that play as well just not getting enough push up front on the offensive line they haven't been physical setting up the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen pass as it just never developed and the hokes decide to pun it away this will be the second time they've had to kick it away it'll go out of bounds and we'll see where they Mark it's going to be right around the 35 Oklahoma state has it back and the offense is on the field after that last pick David they really need to take care of the ball this time no doubt and Palmer I want to know what Spurrier said to you on the sideline after a pick do that again and you'll be right here beside me for the rest of the game you got to go out you got to call your plays and I hope this coaching staff isn't going to be afraid to throw it this round they've got it first and 10 at the 50 looking to move it through the air quarterback now breaking the field at the 40 there he goes and anyone catch it a huge gain on that one before he ran out of bounds and he has the first down that's the way you get things going a huge play and now attacking from just inside the Red Zone oh he had him right down the middle and it just squirted right through his fingers and they missed an opportunity for a nice play on first down he's looking to throw the sweet feet by a little time and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the steps really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal they'll stick to the ground looking for the marker he's brought down but he's got him inside the 10 first and goal from the the clock has stopped and we've reached the two-minute warning before half time and the Cowboys will try to put one on the board on first first and goal they'll try to get it in with the Run he pushes it forward all the way to the two yd line listen you got to be able to know what play to call and what hole to go through like the line blocks for a certain hole good job getting through the hole getting what was blocked getting a nice positive gain making your situation really good going right back to the well and this time he finds water gets it into the end zone for the touchdown and the extra point makes it seven nothing that is exactly what you want from your offense man late in the half you want to execute and then punch it in physically on the ground Take the Lead going into the half take all the momentum nice execution of the drive by that offense nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together on the nasty move and now he's got room and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up he's going to pass fires to the wide out he's got an open man he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down here's his offense with a fresh set of downs back to throw it's drones nice defensive play to get a hand in there and knock it away yeah that was a good play the ball get his hand up and get the tip getting the deflection ball bounces up in the air falls to the ground incomplete pass looking to throw it again using his feet to buy time and it'll be a pick up of nine they're facing a third and one well great job there by the defense because they weren't able to get him sacked right away but you saw the coverage in the back end nowhere for the quarterback to throw the football didn't get the sack obviously you don't get the negative play but you also don't give up a big one you're feeling pretty good about where you are right now in this drive they'll throw on Third and short grab near the sticks it's Lane just outside the red zone as they pick up the first down they'll SP 22 the hes come to the line with a fresh set of [Applause] downs makes the grab on the left and he'll run across the sidelines after the good gain what we knew coming into this game this offense was going to try and get this receiver involved and get him involved early so here they are just finding an easy completion it's not a touchdown but they just want to get this guy lathered up and get him into a r how about that play to get a hand in there and in completion that is a tremendous job by the defender on that play Because when the ball was thrown his head was turned around he was watching the receiver quickly spun the head turned his shoulder located the ball and then knocked it down trying to move the sticks on third down through the air and it's picked off at the goal line and he's brought down and his defense gets the ball back foro this is obviously not a great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in this game's got to much better job with his decision Mak they'll throw it on first down trying to escape and get it himself nice run there to keep things moving before they force him out of bounds and I think this is important for this defense this will be a big key in the football game like I got to limit the damage from that guy cuz that that's a QB that's Dynamic and he can make so many big plays I got to string him out I got to make him get to the sideline but I will say this I do want to hit him at the end of the run I don't want to let him out of bounds and let him get free carries I want him to be physical they'll immediately call timeout from the 17 yd line it's first and 10 he's looking to throw it unloads to the wide out excellent coverage and good use of the hands to knock it away Zone coverage that time in the cornerback a nice job with his eyes he's watching the quarterback he sees the ball thrown so he knows exact when to break on it he's able to break it up for an incompletion quick timeout called by the offense after the play you know he's got to love this offense picking up so many first downs it's their own defense David I know you love playing on teams with great offenses now on First and 10 from the 29 used the play fake now to throw got a man in the middle and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play the offense calls a timeout to stop the clock how many first downs is that just on this drive we're going to have to get the train staff to to give some IVs and get some bananas and we better stay hydrated because at this rate the defense is going to play way too many snaps he found a little opening and got loose they couldn't stop him in the back field so a solid pick up there from the gun they'll try the middle he'll be brought down and that's the final play of the half we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connor in our halftime update Reese talk about an edge of your seat tip first half this gas Barilla Bowl has lived up to expectations and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient war in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top with that said let's send it back to Reese and the guys for the conclusion of the gas Barilla bow thanks for that halftime report Kevin and the hokes will kick it away first and we'll start the second half out of the end zone rolling the dice to bring it out of the end did not work out as he stopped at the 13 Oklahoma State hoping to get the pistols firing on offense they got it done in the first half but the job now follow up close the deal and bring home a bold Victory finish you hear teams say it all the time that applies to them right now they appear in the second half it's a lot of really good things and that first half needs some more big plays here to get this double and you've seen it with bowl games big swings man with when the rust comes off after that first and get in the Rhythm you've seen big comebacks so I know they're winning but keep the foot in the gas this first possession is crucial and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes a stop they are dialed in on this drive a couple of Chunk plays and now they'll snap it on first down the give to the back they'll pick up four second and Six coming when you're a defense it is stop the run first that is your first responsibity makes the whole game easy and right now they got it going on the ground the defense is going to have to change something up these little tiny Dink and dunk Dink and dunk you keep doing this they'll go all the way down the field so you might want to get a little bit more aggressive this defense has got to get better tackle than you field of gang tackling because if you need three or four guys to bring a guy down have fun with that nowhere to run on that he loses on the carry the Cowboys will try to move the chains on fourth down quarterback reacting to what the D is showing on fourth down looking for the completion got it past the marker really confident throw and catch there big pick up and they have a first down that's a great example of the receiver knowing exactly where the first down marker is he got the depth he needed to get so once he was able to make the catch he already knew he had it and now off he goes and he'll finish the run in the end zone touchdown Cowboys the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touch and he takes this from inside the five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 and we're about to get another look at this hookie offense this is when the pressure can ramp up a little bit on an offense deut when they start feeling the heat to answer a score and I think being down 14 can kind of feel that way but dude if you put a good drive together this is a seven-point game so Palmer no need to panic I was just going to say David I mean this thing can he's picked off again his night vision hasn't been up to speed his third interception he didn't get a lot on the return but man he set his offense up at the 30 line gets set first down the hand to the running back oh better check some ankles he makes a move and gets down to the 24 and it's really nice whether it's RPO or not is having a defensive line that Stones the offensive line takes away the gaps it doesn't matter what your read is if you're winning up front of that defensive line the playaction fake quarterback on the Move still looking he'll throw it down this sophomore quarterback learning when to use his legs to move the chain he's got such good awareness in the he does a good job of feeling the rush and you know it's a pass and you want to keep your eyes down field but he sees an opening and if he sees an opening he's got the ability to go get it and get a first down from the Red Zone it's Gordon he's all the way down to the three and electric R has him set up and the Cowboys trying to get a touchdown on first and goal quarterback on the keeper he works his way ever closer all the way down to the one yd line yeah it's a nice job by this defense understanding listen that QB is a threat and they're going to run all kinds of options and he's going to run the football they were dialed in and got that stck in the ground looking for just one more yard it's second and goal trying to run it in and this defense does does it again backto back play for nothing it'll be third down trying to bully their way in just hammer it with this running back again he noses his way into the end zone the offense flexes IT muscle a bit and widens the Gap take a little exhale you know you did your job you got points now you put your defense in position where hey go out and get another stop in is definitely taking care of their business Z and here's the return they make the tackle but not before he finishes off this third period with a big play guys that's the end of the quarter and Oklahoma state has the lead here they built a comfortable lead after three quarters of play Let's Take a look at how we got here as we start the fourth quarter it'll take a pry sizable comeback to win this one back at it to open the quarter with this first down play dropping back it's drones they've got the screen set up didn't have much room to run and not a whole lot of help short gain there and still plenty of ground to cover for the first down here's the deal you're down three possessions you know it doesn't feel likely they're going to come back and win but we've seen crazier stuff happen in college football it all start starts with a big completion on a two-minute Drive they'll get the momentum started in your direction that's a kind of play that can really get you going as they have a first down at the 43 this defense better not blink I know they've got a lead here in the fourth quarter but just look at who they're going against this quarterback is one of the best in the nation they cannot rest on their Laurels someone's going to have to make a play got it in the middle it's Jennings and he gets a big tuck of yardage to the 34 yd line the want to move quickly I'll tell you you cannot count this team out because of who's playing quarterback when this guy's in the game it's never over yeah they're trailing here in the fourth quarter but this dude can put up points quickly they go to the ground that play just never had a chance they knock him down for a loss of five so no room to run there and you wonder after that loss on first down where they turn now yeah and that's why it's so important for the def to win these first downs right you want to create negative plays to make this offense so much more predictable couple of guys there to get him on the ground third and short from the 28 let's see if this is four down territory or if they just pick up the first here from the gun wants to pass and man oh man he is in the dark tonight his fourth interception not much on that return I think they'll let him slide after making that pick and they'll have it at the 20 three snap motion quarterback trying to get a read missed receiver there it's incomplete I'm a little bit surprised they're still throwing the football here this late in the game with this kind of lead they're on first down taking a shot Falls incomplete but obviously they're still seeing matchups they want to take advantage of in the back end of this defense so they're letting him flop makes the tackle at the 30 after he picked up 10 big reason why his team has the lead right now late is because of his performance running the football well over a 100 yards in this game they knew that they were going to have to really put a lot of pressure on him he'd have to shoulder the load and he has delivered for his offense all game long well we are winding it down guys only a few more plays left in this season also wrapping up a really outstanding performance for this offense yeah and they're sending out the seniors on the right foot guys we've seen a lot a great so many tremendous moments and individual efforts David this is a year in college football I know I'll never forget won't forget it loved working with you guys love being in the booth love covering these football games I tell you what a lot of excitement in college football surrounding the sport man let's just keep loving they finally make the stop the bigun is to move those sticks for the first down we reached a two-minute warning and this offense will be quite content just to drain the rest of the time [Applause] away on the move at the 30 they've got it inside the 30 they'll mark it at the 28 it's first down the Cowboys come to the line with a new set of downs looking to go up top on first down he's going to run it and a nice pick up on the run and gets down to avoid contact yeah I think you're just seeing the experience this guy has right he's so poised that initially he fled out of the pocket nothing's open and he doesn't panic he's not throwing it away he's not SL quarterback tried to scramble around for a while but the defense able to bring him down a big play for the defense with the first down sack now Advantage d as the offense comes up on second down floating away he's looking on the right side and that pass is intercepted and they'll close in on him after a good return the interception we've just seen in this game the ball has just gotten away from him a little bit a couple of times just hasn't been able to put it where he wants to and as a result that's now his second pick thrown in this game throws to the wide out got him down field the offense gets a quick timeout at this point every second is pressure open a drive like that it opens a world of possibilities first down from the 43 he wants to throw and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second down coming and this is just one of those days man where everything has gone wrong right like they just haven't been in a rhythm they haven't they haven't got it going and never built the momentum this is this is one of those days you learn from you try to grow from a lot of things that we're going to show in the film room that people aren't going to like but hopefully you can learn from it and do better next time got it in the middle it's Lane quick timeout called by the offense after the play trying to preserve every minute possible you just get the feeling this defense is going to make it hard on them right they've got the lead it's late and they're going to try to tackle everybody in bounds offense is going to have to really work for this and be smart you got to attack the sidelines you got to throw first downs you got to keep this thing moving vertically down the field just threw that one away to avoid disaster and this defense has put a game together like it is hard to put all the facets of Defense together run defense pass defense they've been so good man dialed in you could tell they were ready they were fast they were physical they dominated this football game turns out to be an easy conversion for this offense as they move the change onth down let's see what they they've got on second down defense showing plenty of pre-nap movement of their own dropping back it's drones fires to the wide out complete in the middle and he almost ran away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play and they spike it and get the clock stopped INE BRS up [Applause] operating in the Red Zone here on second down he's looking to throw and the pass rush is effective and they tackle him at the 19 they immediately call timeout trying to preserve every second they can to try to rally here L ninth play of the Drive coming up but this one will be tough third and long looking down field and he needs a bunch oh they really could have used that catch there physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down they'll leave the offense out there to try to get it past the marker and pick up the first they're throwing for it on fourth down and that makes five interceptions in this one the night a is alive and he's brought down after the pick but not before putting his offense in business they're backed off first and 10 from inside their own five let's see if they can create some space and there's nothing more frustrating than when you get late in the game and you know they're running the football and you don't stop it it's been that kind of day for this defense they haven't played well they're going to have to go to the well they're going to have to figure some things out practice this week I can promise you will not be a lot of fun with these coaches and look this guy has some serious moves and he tried all of them and still didn't get loose all business today for this ball Club they come out and they get the win and that's all that matters it's not always pretty U you don't always do everything you want to do or check all the boxes but at the end of the game Jesse you want that W no doubt about it they made the plays they needed to make in order to get this win I thought the quarterback show tremendous Poise good leadership throughout the course of the game defense made stops when they had to make them right there were some things that are going to need to clean up moving forward but ultimately they were the better team
