Pregame welcome to kenck Stadium in Iowa City a black and gold Mosh Pit where the Hawkeyes are ready to swore there's nothing quite like a great rivalry match up in college football the bitterness the intensity the lifetime of memories that will come as a result of what we're about to see in this one as we see a squad from the Big 12 the Iowa State Cyclones taking on a team from the Big 10 the Iowa hawkey glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm Reese Davis David Po and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to tee it up and the Cyclones will boot it away to start the [Applause] 1st quarter game here he comes from inside his own five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 so Iowa's offense takes the field for the first time today while these two might have struggled to stay prominent on the national stage the siaw trophy always carries Paramount importance and it means so much to the fans B to these games a lot of times the energy is through the roof and they both want to destroy each other and what's interesting about this rivalry game is it sets the tone for both programs they generally play early in the year and for the winner it can really catapult you the losers got to pick up the pieces didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 to the air it's mne fires to the big fella and just a short and safe pass play they pick up a few last time these two man Iowa did Iowa things and won a close one man they they do that so often in the SE Ser they just find a way even if they're trailing to win the ball game and Iowa State's got to figure that puzzle out Iowa doing Iowa things defensively they made the plays they needed to make in that game and they're going to have to do that again in this one fires to the tight end and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup really good job working through his progression you get it to him quickly and the big tight end has a chance to run a little and a really good job by the QB throwing an accurate thr I got to hit those guys on the Move On The Run so they can do this they can catch the football get up field and chew up some extra yards and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball this rivalry is so important to the people of this state and it dates back to 1894 guys yeah it goes back a long way when you watch the product on the field every year it's usually low scoring but it's a lot of physical tough people on the field yeah and you know people in Iowa they just love football and this is a rivalry game that really hits home for so many regardless of which side of the fence you're on in this game Iowa or Iowa State it means so much you hate giving up that play if you're the DB on this one because playing man coverage you're trying to defend a slant route you've taken the inside away that's where your Leverage is you'll allow anything to happen to the outside you're trying to funnel the receiver to the boundary you just cannot let the receiver beat you to the inside and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it little bit at a time just to keep that defense honest didn't get much on first down it's second and nine looking to throw it's mnam got it set up on the outside they're able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker well a nice Gainer on that running back screen how about the offensive line getting down field and getting blocks really help out the back find some space to go to work the seventh play of this opening drive they'll need to move the chains on Third and short they'll run playaction fires to the wide out and a missed opportunity on third down as the defense knocks it free and fourth down is coming up this is a point where you just got to be able to focus and the critical down and distances in this game like that third down right there when it's a good throw you got to make the catch you've got to be able to make that play and the Hawkeyes decide to pun it away he ought to be able to use his first punt to pin him deep and that ball will sail into the end zone for a Touchback the Cyclones offense will go to work for the first time today one way to mitigate the explosive capabilities he has on the outside is be physical with him and this dude will do that he will do that and you don't see a lot of offenses take the top off this D because of this guy roaming around in the middle of the field he is a true centered Fielder so this receiver is going to have to make plays I this just such a great job of getting guys on the ground a lot of people are in position but he makes plays so him versus a dynamic wide receiver on the outside will be a great match up this crowd bringing the energy and noise early running back searching for a hole he get him stopped after a gain of four out through the 28 I think you run that play on second down knowing it's going to make Third Down Easy you're not trying to hit a home run you don't need the big play right now now you know third down everything's on the table everything's available High success rate Deb Rising as the crowd Gets behind this defense on third down quick pass on the jet motion the Cyclones pick up the first down I love the idea and I love just finding ways to get your best players out in the open field this pre- snap motion and using it to their advantage on that last play I think that was a nice call and the Cyclones will snap it on First and 10 they'll run it from the gun they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive that he's out there he gets a huge tackle for loss early that is a statement play back to the ground with the running back he stopped after getting a yard out to the 30 it's third down it'll take some work to get to the sticks it's third and long from the 30 back to throw it's Beck feeling some heat receiver looks it in it's complete and he was just a couple of steps away from taking that one even further after the catch these two guys guys just on the same wavelength they make clutch connections all the time and that's practice man that's all summer that's all spring just so many hundreds and hundreds and thousands of balls where you know exactly when that guy is going to break you know he's a stud you're going to feed him especially on these third down situations and they'll bring him to the ground after a short gain you know I think a big part of this isn't necessarily scoring a touchdown on that plate but you're just trying to get your offensive line in the rhythm of the game those Big Fellas get lathered up after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven gives it to the back on the draw they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and they sniff that draw out with a draw unit you're going have to sell that pass like you're going to throw the ball down the field but the defensive line the defense was not biting it you could tell they were ready for it came got on the running back got him on the ground quick fast and in a hurry this crowd trying to make life miserable for this offense throws to the wide out got it in the middle it's Higgin and he almost ran away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play well I think on that play you saw why this guy's such a big weapon in this offense that receiver he does such a nice job with his routes he's patient and he's consistent and he's got good hands you don't see him put a lot of balls on the ground nice job there picking up the first down off the play fake on first down to throw and he just flat dropped it I think he wanted to run before he secured it good wide open big play opportunity hits him right between the numbers you got to make that play those are one of those where I I tapped my helmet like dude that that was me that was on me my bad give me another opportunity later on after the misconnection it's second down now the play fake unloads to the wide out a strike downfield he found his man and zipped it in there and they've got a first down in the red zone at the 11 and a really good job by the quarterback being very decisive he saw his matchup he went for it he attacked it got the positive game I would say he's going to find that guy a few more times today now the crowd responding in the Red Zone trying to help this defense power football with the Run he'll be brought down at the five Y Line and this defense is on its heels I know that wasn't a huge sexy game I know not everybody's jumping up and down but what it does do is put you in a great position to succeed on second down second and 10 really hard third and 10 really hard now you're in a manageable situation it really gives you the whole playback quarterback on the keeper nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry well they were trying to set up the option but the quarterback had no chance did you see the defensive tackle penetrate what a great first step he shot right through the offensive line and got the tfl the terrain gets rough this deep in the Red Zone third down they can pick up the first without scoring trying play action looking to the end zone fires a bullet now it's picked off [Applause] oh man thought he had the interception but the official rules gained too much of an advantage so wave off the turnover and he'll find The End Zone touchdown Iowa State and it feels good to land that first big punch against a rival doesn't it no doubt in a game like this too you just want to be executing at a high level early so David that's got to feel great getting on the board first and settles everyone down all the nerves all the emotion of this rivalry game now everybody can kind of settle in cuz you know you already got a touchdown on the board and it looks as if they've buzzed down replay wants to have another Peak at that last play so the officials take a closer look in the replay Booth will overturn the call trying to break the plane on second and goal and maybe they want to try somewhere else because there is nothing doing in the middle of this defense well he gets tackled down at the one yard line so offensively do you feel confident enough on third here trying to hand it off again yeah and I'm taking both these downs and I'm coming down hill I'm running the football trying to get this in the end zone I only got a yard to go I got to be physical and this one will be stopped for no gain and how about the response from this defense put in a horrible situation horrible field position Jesse they bod their necks three times in a row yeah and it's a sudden change situation and they practice that all week you never know when they're going to come up but you have to have guys on the field playing with a sense of urgency this has been awesome defensively and he missed it no good guys after the Miss no change in the score well that's one the kicker would like to have back that's a kick he should be making in his [Music] Iowa has it back on offense hoping to ride the wave to the end zone that last Drive won't go on the Highlight Reel after ending in a punt they'd like to be more productive this time David and I think this offense has to be a little bit more balanced find a little balance between the Run Jesse and looking in that pass and I think too David it's just going to take a spark it just takes one play to get this thing picked up and going got the completion on the last play still some work to do on second down they'll go back to the ground not much doing there he gets it to the 26 a gain of one I like feeding my guy I like getting my running back touches feeding the ball so he can break some of those big runs but I'm also okay with these little ones set the tone stay balanced now looking for that first down on Third and short from the 26 dropping back it's mnea a little screen to the running back and they wrap him up but not before he's got up for the first down nice job by the running back catching the football and understanding where the first down marker was I got to go get that first down did a nice job of it the Hawkeyes will line it up on First and 10 they'll try the run they make the Stop and that will likely bring us to the end of the first [Music] quarter it's the end of the first quarter and now time for one of the great traditions in college football when the entire crowd here in Iowa City will turn and give a wave to the children at the University of Iowa stead family Children's Hospital everyone engaged and we wave and salute those kids and wish them all the best no matter how many times you see it a moving moment here at Iowa between the first and second quarter when the entire 2nd quarter crowd acknowledges the children across the way hope they enjoy the game as we continue in the second quarter to the ground with the back well there we go we finally see some life in this offense running the football nice game to pick up the first down got to get more of that going moving forward cuz they have not run it [Music] and the Hawkeyes are on the move the give is to Williams I'll tell you this defensive end not only can he pass rush but he can play the run as well you see him beat the offensive lineman there trying to block him and get in the back field to make that tackle for loss that was impressive lost one on that last one it's second and 11 dropping back it's mcnamer gets it out fast he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down you know the beautiful thing about being a quarterback is you can throw a little drag route and they can take it six0 when you got fast Playmakers on the outside that you can get the ball in their hands really quickly great things can happen Oney passes can turn into 60 it's beautiful to be quarterback they've been able to control the ball this is the seventh play of the drive it's third and three caught near the sticks it's brown really good surge for this offense they move the chains and he's got it at the 34 just needed three yards on third down and they got it with Precision execution and the QB got the football and got that thing out of his hands nice job nice slant nice timing route throw it to the receiver get it on his body where he can make the play and get the first down the give to the back relying on that running game and it works for about three yds to the 31 it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your offense up in a good spot got three on first down at second and seven the playaction fake unloads it left that is just a sideline credit throw catch tow drag everything you want throwing the comeback looks like such a simple throw but the timing is so important and as a quarterback man this is all about trusting your guy you know exactly where he's going to sit it down you anticipate it you throw it you know he's going to come back and make that play for you the give is to Williams he pushes is his way down to the four as they get closer and closer listen you you got to be able to know what play to call and what hole to go through like the line blocks for a certain hole good job getting through the hole getting what was blocked getting a nice positive game making your situation really good on the next down going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down to the air it's matn touchdown Iowa and they strike first and what did I start for this offense the throw game getting working getting the touchdown pass this quarterback getting a little bit of confidence this passing game getting in a rhythm nice start for this offense [Music] [Music] [Applause] lining up for the Patra and the P makes it seven nothing they put it in the end zone with a 12pl scoring drive and they cap the drive with a four yd touchdown pass the kickoff team out there set to boot it away he'll bring it back from inside his five nice job by the kickoff team everybody's stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Iowa state has the ball back the Cyclones ready to go on offense the give to the tail back gets it out to the 20 after a pick up of four and that's a really nice play it's impressive R it's first down the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little crease for your running back solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six he'll keep it himself nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the car well they're trying to go option but the linebacker shows his open field tackling ability and also his recognition he expected the quarterback to keep it went after and was able to make the tackle for loss third and 10 still back up inside their own 20 this drive hasn't really gotten started to the air it's Beck they'll run the screen they play that screen nicely he tried to find his way to the marker but it'll be fourth down he just didn't have a chance to get loose and make his way to that first down marker and I think fans get upset sometimes like run your route past the sticks so we get the first down but nice job by the defense understanding where the sticks were and forcing the fourth down fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way they make the stop on the return but there is laundry on the field let's get the callou face defense I'm not sure he knew he had the face mask there tried to let it go in time but couldn't it's a penalty on the defense he'll start this drive firing makes the grab it's brown he's there to make the stop but the damage has been done as they pick up the first down on the throwing catch I really like the slot receiver and I understand he's not the biggest guy in the world but he just runs really good routes and he's always under control he can run option rounds he can run double moves he does a great job cutting and he's dangerous after the catch nice weapon to have work in the middle of the field they'll throw it on first down fires to the right wide open downfield he's R out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down you know's got to love this offense picking up so many first downs it's their own defense David I know you love playing on teams now down to the 12 yd line it's first down he wants to throw getting some heat pressure in his face and he lets it Fly can't find his man as he took a shot trying to deliver that football and it'll be second down doesn't take this defense a lot of time to get to the quarterback man they've got speed all over the place they hit him so quickly and because of that the ball Falls incomplete going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone the give to the right able to pick up a couple before he's knocked down they mark it at the 10 third and long and they'll need to get it close to the goal line to convert off the play fake trying to get to him and a little too much adrenaline on that throw never gave his receiver a chance nice job by the defense they mixing up their look there third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion now on fourth down they'll send out the field goal unit never out and they'll push that lead out a little further [Music] after that last field goal Drive they're set to kick it away he'll start the return inside his SP didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 Iowa State sending the offense back out they are trailing by 10 here Jesse but this is the type of team that seems comfortable in an offensive shootout you got to hold serve at this point right you got to drive the field put some more points up on the board yeah they just scored you can answer that now and keep this thing close David and I think you're used to that as offense like football is so fast-paced now and you score so quickly it's not that big of a deal to get down 10 you keep being you keep being aggressive he had the perfect play to open the drive and now they'll snap it again from the 38 he's got an open man off he goes he's at the 10 and he'll take it to the house he got loose touchdown cyclon did not take long to get into the end zone now let's see if this gets this offense to hit overdrive and we may have a situation here we might have points more points and more points you keep putting Drives together like that that that quickly chewing up that much yardage defenses are going to have to get something fig it [Applause] [Applause] out he'll try to tack on one more [Applause] and with the extra point the lead is cut to three it's 10 to7 aggressive play calling on that drive just two plays they get the long touchdown pass to pay it off the kickoff team out there getting set set Kick from inside his own 10 he'll try to help out their field position not a lot of space to found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the [Music] 21 the give is to Williams brought down at the 31 after a pick up of 10 yds on that one and here we go if you're an offense you got to get that ground gain going so you can have some balance and then you give it to your quarterback Palmer and let him make some plays down the field later on yeah exactly and know coming into this game this offense knew they were going to have have to some way somehow at least establish the semblance of a running game for exactly what you just said you got to be able to use play action pass later in this game to get some explosive plays down the field and it's a play like that that we just saw which can help them get that going after losing a couple on that last play here's second and 12 from the gun they'll give it on the inside and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this run game being physical getting knockbacks and limiting his carries they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one back to pass it's m Nero coming after him and he just throws it away that is not what you're looking for on third down fourth down coming up defense has been looking so good on this drive so far they already set up third and long and now they take all the throws away down the field great job in coverage great job reading the QB's eyes so there's nowhere for him to go with it he's got to throw it away fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way fair catch called for and made Iowa state has the ball back the Cyclones ready to go on offense they put it in the end zone the last time they had it and now an opportunity to really take control it oh the ball's out once that ball was loose offense didn't have a chance Defenders everywhere it's a turnover hey you know it's really easy it's easy to say hey quarterback run out there pitch off of that guy and now your running back gets to go play one-on-one with somebody else it's got to all work timing wise the defense did a great job flying up nowhere to go make the play they can make a quick decision and you get the fumble and recover in the back field excellent field position here for the offense wants to throw on first down off the play fake and the blitz gets to him just like that the defense just simply not fooled by the play action often times as an offense you're hoping the Run fake is going to slow down those pass rushers but man oh man they had their ears pinned back the first down sack pushes the ball back for this long second down the give is to Williams a strong tackle and wrap up from the Junior third play of the drive and they need to make something happen here on Third and long looking to throw and he needs a bunch quarterback feeling that pressure and he's knocked down at the 42 sometimes you beat your guy and you get sacked so clean and sometimes like on this play the DBS do a great job covering make the QB hold the football and then the rush gets home the Hawkeyes will try to pin them back with the punt three and out they got stuck in Reverse they hope the punt can bail them out and the punt will hit at the one just a little too far for them to be able to down it it'll be a Touchback and come out to the 20 give to the back picks up the first down still moving now they've got even more breathing room out to the 31 and a fresh set of downs first and 10 looking to move it through the air and this will be incomplete a big hit there forces second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again back to pass it's back he finds his man and the explosiveness the big Gainer gets it to the 49 yd line when offenses run these slant routes it's about putting the ball right on the numbers and defensively I got to be able to take those angles right away see where he's at break on the football poor angles there by the defense the offense took advantage with some nice yards after the catch going up top on first down now got his man downfield and this defense is a half a beat behind they just can't quite keep up they've got it down to the 21 well ree you and I were talking about this before the game how is this defense going to be able to deal with all the speed they have offensively you saw them just rip off a big play and Jesse now their head spinning just a little bit give up a big chunk play and it's right back at them the Cyclones getting set on First and 10 he's looking to throw it oh he had him right down the middle and it just squirted right through his fingers and they missed an opportunity for a nice play on first down and here comes the offense on second down they'll throw again after the inm that's caught it's Higgins there's a timeout called as this offense tries to find a way to draw a little closer slant routes they're good against man coverage but they're good against Zone coverage too if that receiver can find the soft spot between the linebacker and the DB you'll take that throw all day using the back as a receiver on the screen and they wrap him up but not before he gets enough on the catch for the first down really nice job there of the quarterback reading coverage he knew exactly where to go with the football and at what exact time the timing could not have been better they get the completion on third down setting up first and goal and a chance to really carry momentum with them into the locker room if they can take the lead here first and goal it's incomplete he was shooting for the end zone right there and you've seen this formula work at all levels of football you pressure the quarterback his numbers start to drop he's not as efficient nice job by the defense defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming back to throw it's Beck and he's going to take it into the end zone touchdown Iowa State and I just love the execution by this offense late in the half man you want to take the lead you want to get that momentum on your side and they do it they finish it with the passing game I tell you what heat that passing game up you can keep keep this lead keep the momentum and keep putting up numbers lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they're up 14- 10 so it's an 80 yd Drive and they C things off with a 9yd touchdown pass the kickoff unit about to go to work K he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Iowa has the ball back on offense now you find out just how how much of a gunslinger you are will you roll the dice here late in the half D and you know the defense is going to be really really conservative so I think it's an opportunity to be able to take a shot see how much of a chunk you can get before then you decide really Jess how you want to finish the half you just can't turn it over and throw a pick if you're the quarterback here you have got to be so smart if you're going to be aggressive with your decision making off play action going for the big play and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it and the offense clearly saying we want to take those deep shots we want to be aggressive and and I think that's a good strategy because makes the defense really honor what you're going to do and just missed a little bit but I wouldn't be surprised if this offense finds a way to come back to some of those deep BS got enough for the first and it is a chunk play a huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the break gets it out quickly he's brought down quickly minimal gain there still a bit short of the first down we've got a timeout in the waning seconds of the half maybe a chance to get off a couple more plays looking for a man it's mnam he looks that one in nicely they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more plays and they're running out the kicker to give it a try oh and the attempt is no good and guys still down by four still needing a touchdown to take the lead listen he's a guy that makes 60 yarders in practice so they give him that that opportunity with his big leg he misses it the opponent didn't set up the return so they're going to get the football back now pretty good fueld position there's still a few ticks left on the clock they've got a chance to steal some points here late in the half one more snap coming before halftime comes out throwing on first down he lofs it high and deep down the left side the pass Falls incomplete and that's how we'll finish this half we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin coners in our halftime update fellas it's one thing to have a rivalry game but when you have two longtime foes separated by roughly 100 miles duking it out for the shawk trophy you know emotions tend to run High toughest job inside that Stadium right now might just be the scoreboard operator after all those first down BS and touchdowns big plays have defined this one thanks to two of the best receiving core in all of college football let's see if these defenses can adjust and make the necessary chess moves that said let's get back to the 3rd quarter field and our guys in the booth to see who comes out on top of this rivalry contest and he takes this from inside the five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Iowa State sending the offense back out trying to set the tone with the run that play just never had a chance they knock him down for a loss of five so first down didn't exactly go according to plan let's see what they can dial up on second down reys I got him right where I want okay I'm going to throw the football now I can get back a shotgun forget the running game stuff we're going to play a little pitching catch and see how good that secondary is quickly to the tight end and that is good versatility there and a big hit from the backer in pass coverage well you hear all the time that the tight end's the QB's best friend you saw a perfect example of it on that last play right second down you need to pick up some positive yards to keep this third down manageable really nice job of executing that now on Third and 10 if they can move the chains here maybe they can get this drive started fires to the wide out oh they really could have used that that catch there physical pass defense it brings up a fourth down I know this offense came out here in the second half hoping to build on their one possession lead but after that incompletion I think the smart thing is to just kick it away here let your defense play and try to get it back to you without giving up any points fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way on the move it's brown this guy is a daring punt return man he's not going to settle for the fair catch a solid return gets a little bit of ground for the offense they'll go to the ground a solid pick up there before the defense is able to make the stop he five to six yds a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at math but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't forget about the Run game keep them honest pound that rock halfway there on first down it's second and five and that's going to be incomplete a lot of contact on the play but no Flags it'll be third down tell you what that was a lightning fast decision you could tell he knew what he wanted to do right away makes the decision but maybe his footwork wasn't a little bit good and the pass wasn't where he wanted to put that thing I know that third and short coming here right from the Midfield strike they'll Run play action using the quick game he's got first down yardage as they move it to the 44 well look that wasn't a touchdown that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression and the Hawkeyes have it with a first and 10 they think there's room to run to the right here coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chance so when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that eight- yd pickup on first down leaves them with second and short they'll give it to the back finally pulled down but not before mov the change for a first down all right defense that's that's what we can't do we can't give up this many chunk yards on the ground got to commit more guys to the line of scrimmage got to get those running backs on the ground that's way too easy the Hawkeyes have their offense in high gear they'll see if they can find some Running Room on the right here they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that linebacker saw the EXP wrestling right to the ball carry and a great job by the defensive line getting some push making them use their resources on him linebacker comes free be to make in the back field for a tackle for a loss lost one on that last one it's second and 11 from the gun they'll try to impose their will able to pick up a couple down to the 27 they missed a field goal on that last drive but here on third down they can't afford for this possession to come up empty looking downfield it's mnea throws to the wide out couldn't quite haul it in they almost had their first pick here late in the game and the offense got themselves in a tough situation third and long so hard to execute especially when the field starts the shink but the good news is they got a field goal in their back pocket and on fourth down here comes the field goal unit he'll swing that big leg for three from 44 yds out it is true as he puts three on the board [Music] so after the last Drive ended with a field goal the kickoff team out there to send it away on the run from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Iowa state has the ball back the cyclon ready to go on offense boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here P yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this drive halfway there on first down it's second and five he's looking to throw they're trying to get to it that pass is incomplete and probably fortunate that it wasn't knock free for a fumble quarterbacks talk about it all the time they love the clean pocket where they can step up throw the football that is not what they had nice job by the defense beating the offensive line disrupting the timing and getting a nice clean hit on the quarterback wants to throw it's Beck they'll throw it to the back on the screen makes the grab and it's enough for the first down before he's dragged to the ground and there you go you see you don't have to throw bombs to get big plays in the passing game just screen it to your running back as soon as he catches it he gets up field and how about the downfield blocking by these linemen and the wide receivers as they rip off that explosive play from the gun he leaves it with the bat I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physical you hear a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven he's looking to throw finds his tight end and that was some kind of collision between a couple of big bodies there and he stopped from getting the first down I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tag he's going to look for a man on Third and short and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down and finally the defense is able to get some pressure on this quarterback they had been trying all game long different ways to affect him weren't able to get there but on that play because of the pressure it affected his accuracy that's why the ball Falls in and the Cyclones will punt this one away he'll bring it back it's brown and they'll get him down after the return at the 27 yd line Iowa has it back on offense hoping to ride the wave to the end zone David they had to settle for a field goal last time yeah they move the ball down the field Jesse just couldn't put it in the end zone in that red area where they needed to be a little bit more efficient I think they just got to do a little better job of executing on this drive and let's see if they can punching him for six this time they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 now the play fake finds his big tie end he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short there's not a lot more beautiful in football than the play action and the open tight end yeah because it freezes those linebackers it freezes those safeties they have to come up for a second and play The Run and then the big tight ends big Targets on the back end can catch the football and make big plays they'll try to pick it up on the ground that Midfield he's got room and he was on his way and they get him down at the 30 and that is such great execution by this offense third down and two they know you're running the football but they were physical great job creating a little bit of space Not only do you get the first down you chew up a bunch more yards to nice execution by this offense and the Hawkeyes racing to the line in the hurry up it's a reverse he's knocked down in the back field a swarming defense and he'll lose seven this offense has a second down play to throw it's mnam and that pass will be Jarred loose on second down that brings up third down look like the offense had a chance for a big play there but the running back just could not reel that ball in I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next County on Third and long no secret what he needs here didn't have much of a choice just had to throw that one away it'll be fourth down really nice third down sub defense there that time it's third and long they're expecting pass and they're mixing up their looks they're trying to change the picture pre- snap to post Snap to confuse the quarterback now forcing the incompletion setting up fourth it's fourth down and they'll try the field goal this is going to have to be Unleashed from 54 yds out it's good and with that they've taken the lead how nice is it as a head coach to have a kicker like this it makes these decisions on fourth down so much easier just trut him out there and let him stroke it through the uprights [Music] after putting up the field goal they're set to kick it away on the move from inside is five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 Iowa State sending the offense back out he wastes no time and comes out throwing quickly out to the tight end how about this backer in pass coverage and bringing the big hit stick with him too a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do it'll be a draw good blocking good running pick up of six out to the 30 draws are such a smart way to take advantage of fast defensive linemen that want to get up field and get after the quarterback it keeps them honest makes them realize they got to play the run too great play call ball sitting right at the 30 it'll be third and short they'll try to get it through the air fires to the big fella good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch shotgun fundamentals are so key he was like a short stop caught the shotgun snap and right away rifled it out of his hands like he was turning two that was beautiful the Cyclones come to the line with a new set of downs looking to throw it's Beck quick completion on the out route and he'll make his way out of bounds after the solid pick up the defense has their hands full trying to stop this guy in the slot they're going to have to figure something out to bracket him try and get two bodies around and maybe get some safety help as well cuz right now they do not have the answer for this guy a little bit more to go after that last completion they'll try to pick it up on second down he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three everybody talks about DBS they talk about dropping in coverage and not being physical that DB begs to for great tackle coming up playing physical like a linebacker Here Comes This Home crowd as a defense tries to get off the field on third down from the gun wants to pass unloads to the wide out he's got it and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep them from getting the first down and I love that the QB understood I'm going to put some stank on this I'm going to throw it as hard as I can quickly right when he's breaking out of that curl nice job getting it to him quick so he could get a first down here's a quick throw out to the left you know the defense doesn't have an answer for this slot guy right now they may want to think about bracketing him having a Defender play to the outside and to the inside probably some sort of Zone coverage where you're trying to get two bodies forcing the quarterback to have to go somewhere else with the ball let's see what they've got on second [Applause] down no question they wanted to get the ball to their Playmakers and both receivers have come up big through [Applause] threea one more period to go to see who can make the winning plays and come home with the victory off offense about to reel off its seventh play of the 4th quarter drive fires to the middle got his man all by himself that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the stop yeah and he's been throwing it all over the yard and he's now over 300 yards on the day so been a successful day now 300 yards I don't know Palmer 300 nowadays that's like what back in the day for you that would have been 500 I would Heisman maybe it's a big deal today in college football no doubt listen he's in a rhythm right now he's in a Groove we've seen good decision making he's been playing on time and he's been deadly accurate throwing it guess what this game is far from over picked up maybe a yard it's down at the 16 didn't get much on first down it's second and nine he leaves it with his back and he's able to find a little bit of Running Room before they get him down and a nice job by the running back finding space getting downhill making a good run great job finishing with his pads they'd love to pick up this third down and get a fresh set with first and goal on and third and short they'll try to throw for it he's got it and still on his feet he stopped almost immediately didn't get much but he didn't need much they've got the first down and I like it third down and short and this offense stays aggressive and now they're set up forget the field goal we're not looking for three now now set up in a first and goal trying to get a touchdown already in Prime field goal position but they would love to score a touchdown to take the lead touchdown Z cles they take the lead with the six and some of these guys make it look so easy but these are tight windows down here man there's not a lot of space on the field and he drops back knows exactly where he's going with the football throws it in there makes the play and more importantly now his team is in the lead in the fourth quarter [Applause] now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic and the extra point is good and the lead is five here in the fourth they put it in the end zone with a 12pl scoring drive and the score comes on a 5yd touchdown pass the kickoff team takes the field to boot this one away here's the return from inside is 10 he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Iowa has the ball back on offense you want to talk about having a weapon to bail out a drive David that's why kickers are so important after that long field and listen important is a relative ter we need to make longer passes and get better gains so we don't have to kick long field goals Palmer again on offense and they've got the weapons to do that David they just got to be able to dial those plays up guys have to be able to make them oneon-one to make life easier on this kicker who is so important to this team the short hands it's brown and they'll shove him out of bounds after the short gain I like the decision by the quarterback here just get the ball out of your hands get it to your playmaker a lot of times he'll dance and make even bigger plays than he did here but it was still a positive game they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here back to throw it's Matera he makes the catch just what they were looking for to get this drive rolling there out to the 35 and because the receiver was able to drive back to the QB on that Cur route against man coverage he was able to create a little bit of separation between him and the defender and that was a big key in getting that first down the Hawkeyes will have it first and 10 used the play fake now to throw it's caught down field they've got it to the 49 yd line and they'll move the change sometimes your tight end's a safety valve and sometimes he's your go-to receiver and the offense knew right away it was the primary target it was where he was going with the football cuz you know you get a little bit of suck up from those linebackers with the play action and you feed the big felon the lone backs got it and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage what a great play by the linebacker do you talk about filling a hole defensive line does their jobs he comes in the hole says sit down sir got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 he's looking to throw makes the catch it's Williams and good coverage by the defense just a short game they were able to make the completion but he had to pick his way for just a little bit needed a little more help to Spring him for some yardage yeah if you're going to have success when you throw it outside like that you're going to need some more blocking and better blocking downfield give the defense credit though they were able to rally and made a tackle trying to move the sticks on third down through the air they've got it inside the 40 at the 39 as they pick up the first down well they pick up the first against Zone coverage the biggest key there is the quarterback understanding that a at Zone but be what kind of zone is it is it one high safety is it two high safeties and then you know instinctively where your best throw where your highest percentage completion is based on what type of Zone coverage it's going to be really nice run there good solid pickup and they'll move the sticks with a first down and listen if it ain't broke don't fix I I mean I love teams that commit to the run and when it's successful keep running the rock yeah David I I think this offensive line right now they've got a lather going they're really sort of getting in the groove and flow of this game they're just getting tremendous push at the point of attack it seems like every single time they decide to run the [Applause] ball got it behind the line it's Le really good concept there to get things going and use the tight end early yeah I mean just such a great job on first down setting up an easier second down understanding I don't always have to push the ball down the field but see the tight end make the throw know it's not a big gain but makes life really easy on me on second down leaves it with the running back they get him on the ground but not before he rumbles all the way to the five and listen the offensive line has to do their job but a really good job by the running back understanding where his hole is go hit it get the first down don't mess around nice job following his hole getting positive yards so the opportunity with a touchdown here to take a fourth quarter lead dropping back it's mcnamer got his man quickly he's all the way down to the 2 yd line just spacular execution there I love offenses and quarterbacks that are willing to take the easy stuff take those easy throws that are guaranteed to get positive yards yeah I'm going to take big shots down the field too but don't forget it's easier to pick up second and five third and five than it is when we start getting those long yarded situations go straight ahead touchdown hawy and they grab the advantage taking the lead here in the fourth man I love this offense being able to run the football late in the game when it matters and punch it in for the touchdown and more importantly Take the [Music] Lead up by one they're going to try to get the deuce here and make it a field goal lead they'll go to the air makes the catch the two-point conversion is good they put it in the end zone with a 12pl scoring drive and finish the deal with the short touchdown run from the two kickoff team is on the field they'll try to drive this one deep here he comes from inside his own five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Iowa state has the ball back the Cyclones ready to go on offense off play action on first down and the quarterback goes down at the 11 yd line this defense they are tenacious and you've got guys up front that are athletic and that are so strong and that can collapse the pocket you saw it right there in that play action after getting nothing done on the last one this is a big play second and long from the 11 wide receiver coming across in motion touch pass on the Jet Sweep it's these little moments like that that can help an offense as he gets it up to the 16 yd line well and on these little push passes timing is so important you're trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head esteem when he gets the ball he's hitting the outside and David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why offenses love to run it just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get him out of the spot love to see these third down conversions on offense and they're out to their own 39 yd line this dude is just exceptional in every facet so fluid such a great route Runner and a big play there and money down third down find him I mean you want to find that matchup because he's going to win and gets a good release gets down the field you see his that's your playmaker that's your guy get it to him get the first down it's a nice game but the big theme Here is they just haven't been able to get the Run game going on offense they've been very one-dimensional they're just not being physical enough at the point of attack after the productive first down play it's second and six motion from the offense quick touch pass to the receiver makes it pass to marker got a lot of Running Room big big gain on that one as he steps out of bounds with a first down this defense really needs to be careful and they have to play with great eye discipline understanding where the football is at all times moving forward they have got to know if this guy has the ball cuz he is dangerous in space and the the Cyclones look to keep this drive humming scanning the field it's Beck here he'll take a shot and he got a hand on it to knock it down in the end zone no rest for the Wicket for this offense they are taking shots you just saw a big explosive play on the previous one and right away they get back to the line of scrimmage and they throw it in the end zone they have got this defense on their heels after they couldn't neck it's second and 10 he's looking to throw lets it fly deep downfield and they almost came up with that pick in the end zone what a stop that would have been oh what a missed opportunity for that interception yes I know he gets the pass break up but he had a chance to finish things off and he really didn't get it done but there's a reason he plays defense you know they put the guys on offense that can actually cat this drive was clicking the but after a couple of misfires threatening to stall out on Third and 10 can't make the play on the interception and man they were looking for their first pick of the game instead it'll be fourth down and after that incompletion on Third and long because of where they are in the field and because they have a narrow lead you'd expect this team to just go ahead kick the field goal and take the points so here we are on fourth down and this field goal kicker is going to face all the pressure in the world splits the upright it's good all tied up here in the fourth quarter [Applause] [Applause] we've got a Dandy going here all tied up in the fourth quarter and about to kick it away he'll bring it back from inside to SP he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Iowa has it back on offense hoping to ride the wave to the end zone he'll come out throwing on first down he just missed the Target on that one got to put it on his body I love the decision by the quarterback he found the open man just don't love the throw got to be a little bit more accurate make it easier on your Target still at their own 20 after that last incompletion it's second and 10 the give is to Williams into the pile maybe got one he stopped at the 21 if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it it's complete they'll move the change after he gets it to the 43 yd line oh man did he turned that one loose and fired it into the teeth of the zone and you know as a quarterback race when you're throwing it to the perimeter of the field on these curl routes you've got to have some heat you've got to have arm talent to get that ball out quickly into the hands of your receiver before all those Defenders can get to it man this QB's got a can looking to throw it's mnam right down the middle all kinds of room to throw that one in there and they make the tackle but he has plenty for the first down and the Hawkeyes come to the line with a fresh set of downs off the play fake on first down wants to throw and that one's incomplete well I know it hasn't been a tremendous day statistically for this quar back but his decision making has been good enough to win this game hasn't thrown a lot of TD so far but when things aren't open he throws it away like on that play right there he's not putting his team in a bad spot and that's why they still have a shot to walk out of here with a double after the incompletion back to the passing game quickly complete they make the stop right there good pickup it's still short of the first down man this quarterback is going to have to be deadly accurate here in this two-minute situation right that's really what has had to be all game long he hasn't had a lot of yards because the coverage has just been so tight he's had to be pinpoint perfect it's been hard just to find completions no doubt that's going to be the same thing here in this two-minute drive on Third and short the power run here timeout called by the defense it's their first of the half as they'll make some adjustments well you love to see that from the defense right it's like Ben don't break they've given up a bunch of plays on this drive but now that they're getting down close to field goal range you're seeing them start to stiffen up there yeah and plays don't matter anymore yards don't matter all that matters with these defenses nowadays is points and limiting them well the offense and special teams did their job right here late in the fourth quarter they put themselves now in position to win this game it all comes down to the defense can they deliver if they get the stop they win this game after putting three on the board the kickoff unit unit ready to go he'll start the return inside is five able to find enough room to get it out across the 25 he's brought down at the 26 Iowa State sending the offense back out these are the games these are the moments this is the opportunity for the finish that people remember in rivalries like this one and those highlights that are shown for years and years to come these Big Time moments Palmer coming down to the wire who steps up and makes the big time play and this is why you lift the weights in the off season this is why you do all the gassers and all the Sprints for moments like this game on the line in one of the biggest games of the year to the air it's Beck he had that one slipped to the ground and if he had held on that might have been a WP instead it'll be third down this really has been a Master Class by the quarterback with decision- making right we've already seen him throw multiple touchdown passes in the game he's understood when to take his shots and when to throw it away when things aren't there like on that last play on third down he drops to throw and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down well the defense finally showing some life there it's been tough stic too cuz this offense has been lighting them up through the air but a nice individual effort that time forcing the incompletion down a possession here in the fourth and they'll need to convert on this fourth down he'll go up top maybe a deciding play here finds him out of the back field and they knock him down but he got past the line to game quick timeout called by the offense after the play trying to preserve every minute possible no time to waste here they've got to get set and pick up chunk yardage fires to the wide out how about getting the foot down on that throw for the big completion that's exactly and let's hold on just a minute here as the officials are going to have a second look and the play will stand after the replay booth just does a little double checking to make sure wants to throw on first down and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball the big tight end tries to make a catch and you could tell extends for the ball but great job by the defender getting in there making the hit dislodging the football out as the same time as he's going to catch it and the big tight end couldn't hold on to it after the quarterback and receiver couldn't connect it's second and 10 got him downfield and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one huge moment coming here as they try to punch it in and quiet this crazy rockus crowd looking for the End Zone cuts down Iowa State and in the final moments they've taken the lead man this game has been incredible to watching the offense comes through late in the game takes the lead what a clutch drive by this offense now I'm looking at you defense we got the lead late in the game I need you to go put this thing on ice and Win It For Me they'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point is good and every Point counts it's now a fourpoint lead in the fourth now that they have the lead this kickoff unit has to stay in their Lane create some field position and hand it over to the defense from inside the 15 here comes the return not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 wasting no time throwing on this drive finds the tight end and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down they get the timeout call with seven seconds left left on the clock got to get everybody lined up quickly time winding away and they've got to push the ball down the field grab near the sticks it's lé timeout is called with just a single second left they've got to move quickly here still a chance but they've got to force the ball down the field trying to find his man on first down here's a throw downfield late and they couldn't connect on the Deep shot let's see if things get worse there's a flag on the field which way is this going to go and the defender just way too handsy on that last play you could see all the contact as the ball was in the air you simply can't do it and the referee's caught oh and they get to him had a chance for an alltime finish but the defense put a stop to it and that's the final play of the game
