Game 5: (134) UL Monroe Warhawks @ (123) Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (CF25 Tourney: Play-In)

[Applause] welcome to Hattisburg Mississippi home to the Southern Mississippi golden eagles and fans have been eagerly anticipating this matchup at the Rock today a couple of Sunbelt Rivals ready to square off as we'll see the UL Monroe warhawks taking on the Southern Mississippi golden eagles for EA Sports college football I'm reys Davis joined here in the booth as always by David Pollock and Jesse Palmer guys let's tee this one up the warhawks will put total leather to crank us up from inside his own 10 he'll try to help out their field position he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 so Southern misses offense will have the first possession of the game and there he is to this team's fans he is a heroic figure he is the guy who can lead them to the promised land this guy has been in big games in big moments and he's delivered for his football team it never seems like a situation is just too big for him this obviously is a huge game I cannot wait to see this guy compete you just want to find a way to affect the QB and the defense does a great job getting to the quarterback hitting him as he throws the football not only does does it make that throw bad in the future now the quarterback's taking a few hits and makes him a little bit more unsure of himself they'll throw it to the back on the screen he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short one of the things I love about this offense is they're very versatile in their passing attack they throw to receivers and tight ends and the screen game is big as well this guy is a weapon you're seeing that here early and to keep this opening drive going they'll need to convert third and one he'll pull it on the read and boy is he close to that first down maybe just a couple of inches short well the defense got the stop there on Third and one let's see if they can do it again here on Fourth and inches David I just got to find a way to fall forward be physical we work on this all week you know you're going for it on fourth down and the golden eagles will try to pin them back with the punt getting our first look of the afternoon at the punt on the return it's Curry coverage team able to put a stop to that return at the 42 yd line so U Monro offense will get the ball for the first time here comes the offense on first [Applause] down he'll do it himself they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one he tried to make something out of nothing but there was really nothing he could do on that play and I hope offensively that's not going to make them quit on this option play that that's a scheme that really puts the defense in a bind if I were them I wouldn't let that play stop them from trying to run it later in this game looking for a man it's Haring takes the easy throw in the flat the defense wouldn't let him loose and even though it's in completion they lost yardage you know that's one as a quarterback when you see all those Defenders around your intended target like that just throw it in the ground or throw it away I mean that's a completion that loses yards you're just hurting your offense there I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next County on Third and long a check down would be the last resort and he can't escape and down he goes not a ton of play calls for third in California when you're on offense you know you're going to have to have your quarterback holding on to the football you really got to think about how you're going to protect offensive coordinator may want to think about using more max protect schemes get more bodies in to give this quarterback a chance and the warhawks send out the punt unit three and out they got stuck in Reverse they hope the punt can bail them [Applause] out he'll be brought down but there is a flag on the field let's see what that one's about so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty so the offense keep this drive alive thanks to the roughing the punter penalty looking deep down the right side and that one Falls incomplete trying to get a chunk play on that one nice job by the defense there taking all throws away from the quarterback he had nowhere to put that football in the field to play so that ball obviously had to go out of bounds let's see if they go back to the air on second down here's the handoff that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there I'll tell you this is a running back who's very very dangerous and the defense did a good job getting him down there but they got to do a great job gang tackling because this is a guy that can break tackles and turn those types of plays into home runs on Third and long try to convert through the air they've got the screen set up they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some lanes for their running back hey man sometimes you get the perfect play call at the perfect time that time the defense blitzing offensive line allowed everybody to run up field and they slip in theun running back screen and behind it there was nobody there to make a tackle and this offense generates a massive play looking to the big tight end and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down my job is to make sure that ball comes loose and I got to go through that guy use my shoulder pad drive my feet really really be physical cuz if he bobbles it at all or as soon as his hand gets to the ball you can tell the difference when that body jerks forward and that ball starts to come loose and pop out and he finds Some solid space makes a nice game before the defense is able to stop him they've controlled the football on this drive the eighth play will be a third and three gets it out quickly now well within Striking Distance as that third down play gets him a first at the 29 David that is a great security blanket for a quarterback to have a tight end to make those conversions dang right find the big fella on Third and short Dependable clutch nice hands first down the warhawks have this offense rolling moving the running back trying to get the D to tip its hand unloads to the wide out that was an eyelash away from being picked off and that is not the way to set the tone with a near pick on your opening drive great coverage great break on the ball had a chance to really make a big play and maybe even take that thing back to the house but you got to secure the catch we like to hit people more than we like to catch balls fast motion from the offense dropping back it's Harry gets it out fast and he's just just run out of bounds maybe living to fight another day there it'll be a loss on the play they're within field goal range at the 29 let's see if they can pick up a few or the first down on Third and long unloads to the right he makes a catch he's brought down but there's a flag on the field let's see what the call is and the defender just way too handsy on that last play you could see all the contact as the ball was in the air you simply can't do it and the referee's caught caught behind the line it's Harrison and that defense is there to guide him out of bounds after a short gain really good job working through his progression you get it to him quickly and the big tight end has a chance to run a little and in a really good good job by the QB throwing an accurate throw I I got to hit those guys on the Move On The Run so they can do this they can catch the football get up field and chew up some extra yards they'll test the right side and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage we've reached the end of the first quarter and it has been a def defensive battle and the stats tell the tal so [Applause] far let's see if the offenses can find a little rhythm here in the second really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal third down play from the gun got it and to the end zone touchdown warhawks timing and better execution that is just what a quarterback and wide receiver need and and it's timing it's route running right you got to be precise you got to know exactly what yard you're running to the quarterback receiver on the same page that's why you get the touchdown [Applause] lining up to tack one more onto that [Applause] lead and the pat makes it 7 nothing that is what they mean when they say ball control a 14-play touchdown drive and they top it off with a 14 yd pass for the touchdown the kickoff team out there and ready to go and he takes this from inside the five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Southern Mississippi has it back and the golden eagle offense headed to the field and he fights his way forward gets away from one but not much doing on that one and just a great job by the defense being Stout right that's your job be Stout up front stuff in the Run play make them get in more passing situations but do not let them run the football that's 101 stop the run first they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 he'll run it again finds a little bit of space gets three to the 22 and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it little bit at a time just to keep that defense honest a third and long coming up here looking downfield it's raker trying to get to it and the heat gets there and they get him down at the 14 yd line when you're on defense and you get to play outside linebacker it's about as good as it gets right I get to rush the passer just like this and put him on the ground then I get to cover in space I get to move all over the place great job by the outside linebacker the most fun position to play in college football the golden eagles will send out the punt unit three and out and not much choice but to get rid of the ball here's the fair catch but there is a flag on the field we might have to do this one again the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty going to the running game Powers through the defender he make the stop after a gain of three to the 31 and that's a really nice play it's impressive when it's first down and the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little crease for your running back after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and [Applause] seven now they'll run the draw and he's able to shed one tackle and pick up pretty good yardage it's really frustrating when you get a guy in his spot he's in the hole he's there to do his job and he can't get the guy on the ground that's your job get him on the ground you know especially a guy that's not a huge back you got to make that tackle you can't make it easy on the offense where now they got a a manageable situation trying play action grabed behind the line it's Kei coming through with that third down conversion and they'll mark it at the 43 these routes have some reads and adaptability built in and the big fella found that cushion and made the play man it's so awesome how much offenses have evolved they know exactly what they're getting where to sit down quarterback tight end on the same page gets the first down they'll ride the running back and leave it with him and a lot of times you want those big plays you want those splashes plays but sometimes you're going to take some losses you're not going to run the football overly well but if you continue to run it you can at least create some balance you at least have the threat of it otherwise you're just going to abandon it and now it's just going to be a passing game got three on first down it's second and seven gives it to the back on the draw and he won't quite get there but boy after that pick up just a few inches to go for the first and a play of possibilities here and often times running backs love draw plays because there's less traffic in front of them the offensive line is selling pass the quarterback selling pass they don't get the handoff until the very last possible second so the D lines rushed away up field and now it's so much easier for these backs to find their holes and pick their LS that'll be enough for the first down as they stop him at the 43 yd line well the defense knew coming into this one it was going to be a physical game guys are going to have to be great at the point of it attack and get off blocks and make tackles it couldn't stop the offense from picking up that first down on that run play we've reached the two-minute warning and we have ourselves a ball game and they have a chance to take the lead here before the half and the golden eagles are moving quickly down the field they'll switch it up here and look to throw fires to the right got his man slicing and dicing through this defense and they've got it down to the 23 nice Patience by the quarterback here working against Zone coverage he was allowing his receiver an opportunity to find that open space in the defense before pulling the trigger the golden eagles have it with a first and 10 wide receiver shows motion looking to pass it's raker fires to the right and he'll take it in and house it touchdown Southern Miss yeah and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra point away from tying this football game you Trail a little bit in the first half stayed calm if this passing game can continue to heat up look out in the second half [Music] [Applause] lining up for the pat hit that one with some aggression for the point after 76 yds on the drive for the touchdown and they finish it off with a touchdown toss from the 23 all tied up and just about set to kick it away here he comes from inside his own five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 guys we'll see what this Warhawk offense can get done this time complete to the right the offense waste no time getting the timeout call yeah and you've seen these Cur routes this is a timing route understanding that Ball's got to come out of my hand right when he hits the top of that curl nice job by the QB finding him nice catch makes the grab down the middle and they finally haul him down but not before the good catch and run that was a really nice catch and an even better run after the grab yeah and get the ball to your playmaker what's good about having him in the slot is he can go either direction you can get him matched up on somebody that's not as fast and you watch he can run away from those linebackers or safeties looking to move it through the air throwing right got him and nobody's close and they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage is picked up and that's why this guy's a complete running back he's good between the tackles he can pass block but he can also run routes and we're not just talking about screens or swing routes this guy gets vertical down the field and he can run the route trip he dialed up a beauty on that last one it got him inside the red zone now it's first and 10 from the 16 oh he makes a catch couldn't quite nudge it in not sure you could get much closer but it'll be first and goal on the doorstep of cashing it in for the offense they'll try to get it in with the run and to the end zone he goes touchdown U Monroe and that is exactly what you want from your offense man late in the half you want to execute and then punch it in physically on the ground Take the Lead going into the half take all the momentum nice execution on the drive by that offense ready to try the point after and the pat gives him a 14-7 lead a very efficient five play scoring drive and Clos the deal with a three-y touchdown run they're just about ready to kick it away he'll bring it back from inside the spot nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 Southern Mississippi ready to send that offense back onto the field they'll throw it on first down and he drops it just took his eye off of it at the last minute man and that's a big missed opportunity for the running back I'm trying to find ways to feature this guy and get him the football in space and not just hand it to him all the time and tell you what I'm a lot less likely to find those plays if he can't reel in those catches after missing the connection last time it's second and 10 from the 22 scanning the field it's raker fires to the wide out and he really needed to hold on to that one but it was not loose and third down is coming if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum out of the gun to give to the back how about this confidence in the running game and he picks up nine just short of the marker it'll be fourth and one quick timeout by the defense there trying to make sure everyone has the same call and the golden eagles will bring the punt team onto the field this will be the second time they've had to kick it away no return coming here fair catch is signal for and made just shy of the 30 running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the break so runs like that that can really help your field position as they're up at the 35 first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connors in our halftime update man we've been looking forward to this one all week a fun start to things in Hattiesburg and it's been said football is a game of inches and guess what based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per play how can you argue that I mean the low-lying fruit is to look at some of the explosive plays we've seen in panic but really this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball and how they play when it matters most and with that let's send it back to the guys inside the rock the golden eagles will line up to kickoff and start the second half he'll start the return inside his five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 U Monroe has it back in the offense ready to go to work trying to set the tone on the ground in the third what a Nifty run there to pick up the first down in halftime in this locker room there's a lot of positive things to talk about you got the lead but you know what else will be positive Palmer get the running game going early in this second half you're absolutely right here and I think this coaching staff is going to try to put this game on the offensive line a little bit let these guys take this thing over be physical and push this defense around makes the grab on the left brought down at the 45 after a 15yd pickup and a big key on that throw to the slot receiver guys is putting the ball out in front the location of the throw is what helped that guy get extra yards after the catch the offense getting set for a first down from the 45 and off from the shotgun really nice stop there from this senior leader man that D tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness didn't get much on first down it's second and nine give to the running back they'll finally drag him down but not before he gets it to the 40 and it's a first down this is going to be a big key for him David with the lead here in the second half running the football right staying on the field and bleeding the clock yeah run the football you're ahead you can be a little bit more conservative but again this opens up the pass this keeps everything in balance for this offense the pull and throw off the RPO nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down this offense is just so dynamic because they've got Playmakers at all the skill positions right we just saw a big play in the running game now we see one in the passing game there's not one dude that you can key on here if you're on defense to try and slow them down and the warhawks want to crank the tempo and you can give all the credit to the crowd for that one offense no chance and call for the false start so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty on first down here comes this offense they'll try the Run brought down after picking up three down to the 22 I never know if it's GR ially correct to say a team is being out physical you hear it a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when they decide to run it and here comes the offense on second down dropping back it's Harry a shot toward the end zone and the pass is incomplete thanks to a big hit hey man if you're going to force incompletions when the QB's thrown to the tight end you better be physical nice job with the hit forcing that incompletion seventh play of the drive coming up but a long way to go on third down from the gun wants to pass right down the middle it's complete he's brought down but he's got him inside the 10 first and goal from the eight I love that from this offense three is good you're in field goal range but now we're set up with first and goal because of great third down execution by this offense stay aggressive even when you get in this part of the field when everything shrinks and gets a little bit harder you still want to be aggressive quick strike complete they get it down to the seven on that pass play in Prime position for a score they're trying to throw the wide receiver screen to pick up that first down but the defense just too much speed getting to the ball carrier on that one defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he'll keep it himself he pushes it forward all the way to the two yd line when you're a defensive guy and you want to fire in you want to go hit the quarterback but you know if I fire in he's just going to give the football up you got to be patient you got to understand what your responsibility is then you see when he keeps the football you got to go tag them the problem is these guys are such good athletes they're so hard to catch once they do pull the football but it's kind of like the hidden hat trick you know where's the ball it's underneath this one no I picked this one up no it's gone it's underneath this one NOP there it is it's gone this juncture in the game in the third quarter you got a touchdown lead after that play I think you go ahead and kick it and make this thing a two-possession [Applause] game they'll try to get something out of this drive and kick the field goal here on fourth down from the left hash and this distance ought to make that angle pretty easy to handle oh he missed it no good and the margin is still seven after the Miss guys and that's just the Chip Shot that's just a field goal they got to make [Music] guys Southern Mississippi has it back and the golden eagle offense headed to the field the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out Jesse he just had no rhythm in that last drive so someone's going to have to step up and make a play David and get this thing going yeah let's find some juice find your guy find those plays that you know you can run inside out forward backwards get some first downs get some positive momentum and the golden eagles in the hurry [Applause] up quickly complete great to have perfect blocking but you can also make your own and that's exactly what he does getting it up to the 36 love the play call on the RPO that time the defender bites on the Run fake and that opens up the window for the slant coming in behind it nice job tried to pound it on first down now back to the [Applause] line quarterback on the keeper they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well they're trying to go option but the linebacker shows his open field tackling ability and also his recognition he expected the quarterback to keep it went after and was able to make the tackle for loss trying to pick up a first [Applause] down time as expired here in the quarter end Louisiana Monroe has the edge they're sitting in a strong position here with the lead let's take a look at our game [Applause] summary not only is a scoreboard on their side but so too is time as we open the fourth back to throw it's raker tight end finds a soft spot they'll move the chains after he gets it to the 43 yd line love the way he didn't just run to a spot he found the cushion in the zone and got himself open for the first down yeah and you're taught to find that space don't run right into a Zone Defender who's sitting there looking at the quarterback and looking at you so much creativity with routes now and of being able to just have subtle moves One Way come back the other way nice job by the tight end finding that hole in the zone you know this tight end's a weapon in the passing game he runs good routes normally has good hands but didn't have them there second down coming up he's looking to throw Let's It Fly finds a man on the left he's loose they're able to keep him out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the two after the big play in the passing game nice job by the running back catching the football and understanding where the first down marker was I got to go get that first down he did a nice job of it and guys if they can somehow someway find their way into the end zone we'll have a tie game in the fourth he's got it down to the one yd line right on the doorstep of [Applause] perer now it's second and goal quick pass on the Fly motion that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there the first thing you have to do to make these plays successful offensively is I have to block The Edge I I got to get my Speedster in space they didn't do a good job of getting that guy out there in space where he could really use his Jets nice job by the defense understanding it seeing it rallying to it and tackling that guy for a loss barels ahead and he takes it in for the score touchdown Southern Mississippi and I love the physicality of this offense it's third and goal it's money time I've got to be more physical than you and that's exactly what this offense just did put the ball on the ground and put it in the [Applause] endzone on to attempt the try and the extra point was good and we are all tied up in the fourth so it's an 80 yd drive and they finish it off with a short Plunge Into The End Zone coming down the stretch in the fourth and we are all tied up about set to kick it away on the run from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 guys we'll see what this war hawk offense can get done this time he'll pull it on the read and the defense makes to stop after a minimal gain yeah and it's a nice job by this defense understanding listen that QB is a threat and they're going to run all kinds of options and he's going to run the football they were dialed in and got that sucker to the ground kept it on the ground last time let's see if they go back to it on second down works the middle and a good job in coverage there as they stop it after just a few man it's so important when you play QB I got to know when to put some air on it and I got to know when to rocket that thing in there working the middle of the field he knew he needed the rocket threw it in there great job great catch they're staring down the defense and this crowd on this huge third and four back to throw it's Harry working that left side now he's going to have enough to pick up the first down as they stop him at the 33 yd line it's tough on the defense there third down you're in zone coverage everybody's watching the quarterback and you're trying to make a break on the ball but he just got it out of his hands too quickly and the throw was too accurate really nothing you can do there and it's now a fresh set of downs the warhawks will line it up on First and [Applause] 10 he hurls one deep deep down the left side and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge gain if he could have held on now second and 10 he got his hands on it but couldn't hold on to it and what a time that would have been for their first pick of the game and there's so much for a quarterback to think about stick it out in the belly do I pull it now when I pull it oh I got to get my feet set make an accurate throw to the right guy so a lot of things going on and I think that you saw that led to a little bit of inaccuracy this is a type of play that could be a pivotal moment tight game third and long coming he's going to throw deep right side he's got it inside the 30 touchdown warhawks they move on top here in the fourth and I think in the pre- snap I think both of these guys were on the same page they had a look defensively that let them know we can pitch this thing way down the field I'm going to go run under it and make a big play for it yeah and when I'm the receiver I'm like I'm open right I'm I'm going straight down the field throw me the football I got the speed I can beat this guy you can tell they've done that so much in practice they knew it was second nature and they executed it perfectly [Applause] getting set for the point after the extra point is good and now in the fourth they're up by a touchdown and an extra point so that scoring Drive took only six plays and the score comes on a huge play in the passing game covering 67 yds to the end zone about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown on the move from inside is five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 Southern Mississippi ready to send that offense back onto the field got it in the middle it's Buckley this offense has their work cut out for him man because the coverage has been so tight and if you're not throwing to the sideline or you're not getting past the sticks this defense is going to tackle you inbounds like they just did on that last play and bleed the clock that last completion sets him up on second [Applause] down he'll do it himself One Step WRA Two Step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground we reached a two-minute warning and the defense needs to come up with a stop to close this thing out the defense will try to hold up one more time under two minutes to go to the air it's brto maker quick completion on the out route and he's knocked down immediately but not before he moves the chains Precision execution and timing to pick up the first down on the out route I think you're spot on those out routes man it's got to be about timing you got to throw that football before he breaks nice job seeing it short yard situation throwing the ball on the mud so the receiver can get up field and get the first down you just get the feeling this defense is going to make it hard on them right they've got the lead it's late and they're going to try to tackle everybody in bounds offense is going to have to really work for this and be smart you got to attack the sidelines you got to throw first downs you got to keep this thing moving vertically down the field this offense has a second down play oh so close to paying off the tip drill he had it in his hands but it falls incomplete how nice is it as a defense when you've got a corner that can play on an island and be as dominant as this guy has been all game long you just saw another great example of it right there breaking on the ball and knocking it away from the gun on third down snagged in the middle it's Buckley quick timeout called by the offense after the play trying to preserve every minute possible most important part of a clutch Drive piece together some first downs get in position and here they are on First and 10 they're bringing heat got it behind the line it's Clark and that defense pushing him out of bounds after a short gain well bad news he didn't get the first down there the good news though he got out of bounds stopped the clock they still have one timeout so there's a lot of time still in this two-minute situation to March down the field and get a score picked up some yardage with that completion now second down pre- snap motion quarterback trying to get a read caught in the back field it's Clark they immediately call timeout trying to preserve every second they can to try to rally here late this will be the eighth play of the drive but a great opportunity for the defense to get off the field grabbed in the middle it's Mims good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch wow the quarterback knew he had to get that one to his receiver quickly on the end route did you see the velocity on that throw now they've got to hustle to the line and get set he spikes it clock stops as they try to rally late this defense just can't get off the field the offense Unstoppable looking for a man it's Ro maker looking for a deep man complete downfield they'll get him stopped just short of the endzone but they're in business here with a first down well how about the offense setting that play up we've seen earlier in the game a couple shorter throws they're just trying to suck those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage anticipating that they would get an opportunity to take a shot they called the perfect play at the perfect time right there he's looking to throw lets it fly into the endzone for a touchdown and now just one point away from a time man great execution that is how it's done late in the football game now all you need is that extra point bring the kicker out there this is what you do just like practice knock it through the uprights tie the football game and we might be looking at overtime [Applause] soon so you think this is automatic they need this one badly and no problem on that extra point and we have a tie ball game here in the fourth they put it In The End Zone with a 12pl scoring drive and they've got it locked up in the final minute after the touchdown and extra point from inside his own 10 let's see what he gets really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 leaves it with the back and this one will be stopped for no game great team defense on that run play everybody doing their job people winning their one-on ons D linemen staying in their gaps linebackers and DBS filling you just can't do it better got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 well guys let's play some more headed to overtime and this just feels right both of the these teams going back and forth so of course David this thing needs to get decided in OT let's see who's better short amount of time to do it a couple possessions probably maybe one possession each who's the better team all right guys so here we go in overtime and just to refresh everyone's memory alternating possession starting on the opponent's 25 and it's so nice to be on defense first to to set the tone to understand what you need try to hold them to a field goal the offense knows they can do their job to go out and get a win just two possessions Palmer more like you got to be at your best yeah and I love the new rules too because in the third overtime possession it goes to alternating two-point plays back in fourth who's got anything left in the tank here in OT quickly complete a
