e live from Yankee Stadium in the Bronx we're ready for MLB the shows game of the week it's the Los Angeles Dodgers taking on the New York Yankees with my partner Chris Singleton I'm John shami and we got a rubber match on our hands today partner yeah the final game of a three-game set they've split the first two and regardless of how important a series is within the larger picture of the season it's a game you want to get up for every series win feels good so we should see a fun match up in this one all right we'll be back to get this one started after this so just about set and getting to start Nester Cortez Jr what's the word on him well he's putting together a really nice season on the mound RA in the low threes very respectable when you consider guys are looking to do damage they're not trying to just walk and hit singles they're trying to hit homers and draw walks and score runs so when you have a guy that can limit the other team from scoring more than a few runs that's really tough to beat game in and game out and the Lefty with the 01 [Applause] B swing and a pop off in foul gra lameu makes the grab and there's one down here's the Dodgers lineup now this is a veteran Le lineup right here a lot of players with plenty of experience singing yeah no doubt about that boo these guys have been around the game for a long time and they may not have the flash that they once did but they've got the wisdom to be able to understand different situations be able to think with the opponent and sometimes in front of the opponent and you always seem to see a team like this they come to the ballpark they know how to get down business and they understand what the job is at hand the wi in the pitch and a foul ball here's a 1-1 hard hit to third fires across the diamond quick look up it's deep into the ball game and they haven't been able to scratch anything off of this guy so look for him to do the same thing today maybe Go the Distance maybe hand it over to the bullpen at the end and try to get that W John birdie now the Box comes up empty with a swing there Otani an Allstar a season ago he throws a slurve a for seamer a cutter a splitter and he works in a sinker swing and a miss and that's strike two oh that's that slurve right there he threw it extremely well and talk about just a ton of break so tough to get that Barrel [Applause] to and a ground ball to First oh great grab on the dive takes it himself and he got him nicely done at first for the out look at the big guy getting down and dirty robbing what probably would have been a double if it gets by I don't know maybe a knack for working himself out of tough situations that he finds himself in you know you like that in a relief pitcher but when you have it for a starting pitcher a guy that can and makes the catch you love to see when a guy's hungry to make a play right there an excellent diving catch you could absolutely tell he was all in and tracking that ball down now it's Aaron judge up to the plate Homer in the ball game yesterday afternoon first pitch not [Applause] close Now One Missed [Applause] and now two and one man that pitch was dotted so much talent on display when this guy's out there on the hill two and one on Judge that one fouled off [Applause] that missed by a lot and the counts full Juan sto Waits on Deck two out Bas is [Applause] empty that fast ball at the bottom of the Zone can be very effective just got to keep it on the corners payoff pitch foul ball and it remains a Full Count little early on that fast ball I'm sure the pitcher taking a note look for an off speed pitch on this next [Applause] one two down nobody on and that's ball for it wasn't easy but he earn that walk after a long at bat well that's a nice job of grinding out that at bat bets Cortez a former Allstar 29 years old a former first round pick back in 2017 right through there for a strike well you always have to be careful in these spots because mooki is lethal in the man a board on the leadoff single was on the outside didn't go the other way with it but still a nice job of using the big part of the field to find a hole no way he hits it that well if he hooks and a count one and two [Applause] wouldn't chase that [Applause] time and now the Lefty spoils that one and it remains two and two second inning here no score now a screamer into the Outfield you're smart look for something down in the zone but not too far don't want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt and that just misses it's a good take and the two two spoils the two strike pitch and he'll see another [Applause] and another [Applause] ball downstairs and it misses Ball Four he's making things difficult for himself right now out there on the mound but you know his confidence should still be high enough to get out of this he's going to have to buckle down right here here's sh Otani and the first pitch misses for ball one he's looking for a ground ball to get a double play strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger so first and second with two outs here's Max munzy that funky Muny he's been really clutch with runners in scoring position this season so they'll have to be extra careful in this matchup two on two outs and that one fouled off instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in the one to one just missed could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming first and second two down here in the rubber match of this three- game series [Applause] swung on team out in front he's enjoying a fun trip around the bases well he almost robbed the home run right there and I tell you what he'd love another crack at it during batting practice you always like to work on that and so close but that one was just out of his reach so two down Freddy Freeman up to the [Applause] dish up and in and it's one and0 leftand batter weights that misses the zone and it's two and0 Cortez maybe a little less aggressive on the mound right now after that home run Chris yeah it seems that way you know pitchers they can come out feel good but then all of a sudden get touched up a little bit and they start trying to throw instead of pitched they're not trusting their stuff and that one missing low well he's been good for the most part is it going to take someone going out to the mound to maybe refocus him a bit oh partner every picture is a little different I I liking it to you sometimes you come in and you're not as focused and I kind of do what it takes to get you on track and then you have a great show uh so perhaps it's the same with him nobody really wants their Rhythm broken up but sometimes they need a little pickme up two down dolman on Freeman will take his Spas it's been a little bit of a shaky inning but he's still in a good spot to get out of this thing without giving up any more runs he's just got to turn the page and go after this next [Applause] guy nope ball [Music] [Applause] one two outs and another ball well he's really working him away this bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the [Applause] infield Dives but it kicks off his glove not in time he's safe now Jason so two on but two away here's Jason Hayward 0 for one he grounded out and his first it back that's outside and that's ball [Applause] one kicks andios that one catches the zone and the count one and one well we call that keyho holding even though it's but but you know this hit bat right here could be a big factor in the outcome you think about it there's a chance to really blow this thing open right here and he grounds one back up the middle Dives but it's off his glove into to scores the runner from third it's four zip now B two outs Bas is full and next will be the Dodgers cleanup hitter Muki bets one for one with a single and a run scored so far tapped at the plate but it's a foul ball Lux the runner at third payward at second herandez at first two out of the inning there's a strike to Muki very well executed change up right there if he can command the fast ball consistently that's going to be an important pitch in terms of him turning this outing [Applause] around all loaded up dangerous hitter at the plate foul ball it stays calling the balls and Strikes pretty standard zone for Johnson sometimes he might get a little jumpy a little excited and expand the Zone but usually you at least feel like the pitcher on the mound is earning it and that's important because you got to make players ear it righty delivers and they'll do it again struck him out really fooled him with a breaking ball there well he's got great strikeout stuff on the mound doesn't he I mean double digit strikeouts in his last start and he's just racking him up again in this one this guy can really dominate a game out there not a fun assignment for any lineup Anthony Rizo batting with one down takes a strike all right sing you know I'm a dork show Otani go back to May 5th 2022 at Fenway Park he tossed a complete Game through 99 pitches get this 81 strikes it was the most strikes thrown with less than 100 pitches in a game since they started tracking pitch counts that's just unreal fights that one away and the count remains 0 and two the Dodgers leading by four bottom half of inning number two and ball [Applause] one and a ball in two strikes swings and misses the high heat too much on that one backto back strikeouts to start the frame and that's now three in a row yeah he's really settling in and getting a feel for his pitches throwing him where he wants to right now so we'll see how long you can keep this streak going DJ lahu at the plate and takes High there right through there for a strike looks like a really good fast ball today you can hear that catcher mitt popping looking forward to hearing a lot of that one in this one here comes a pitch comes up empty that's strike two one ball two [Applause] great the pitch and that one hammered Hernandez ranging back bangs off the wall now he turns and heads for second the relay but he's in there easily he needed that one it's been a tough stretch at the plate lately absolutely blasted that one into the Gap but just didn't have quite enough to clear the wall out there maybe a little more elevation under it and it carries over but that's a swing you'll be happy with every time could be a chance here for them to start clawing back into this ball game Anthony vulpi stepping in now for the Yankees swag and a popup foul out of play off to the right side that'll find the stands [Applause] the pitch B that's inside Bo he never moved cuz he never had time to but that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work away the pitch two ball in the dirt but kept close and an excellent job keeping it right there and the righty deals and that one fouled off runner at second two down here in the third and final game of the series swing and a miss that one in the dirt gets two it on to First in time so the drop third strike doesn't hurt him and that's that so A two out double but they don't score we head on now to the top of the third it's the Dodgers four and the Yankees nothing top half of the third inning and at the plate for the Dodgers James outman J outman Cortez back to work and that Clips the inside corner you know these Dodgers doing a good job of Simply getting the bat on the ball in this game and the numbers back that up and here's a stat for you boo they're making contact with more than 85% of the pitches that they're swinging at it's pretty special stuff not so good if you're out there on the mount and a base hit and the lead off man aboard tough game for him so far boo another hit and they've just been knocking him around through the first two plus he's got to get things back on track maybe jum a pitch that isn't working or he might not last much longer the batter now will be Will Smith he walked and came around to score his first time up there's a strike oh one's the count [Applause] [Applause] just off the outside edge now one and two though Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game at a ball this one in the dirt he throw a second not in time he's there easily so a wild pitch allows the runner to advance definitely trying to work down and get that double play ball but it got away enough to erase any chance of that good job of moving up in scoring position now a hit could make that wild pitch really sting it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens [Applause] man it's second fouled off again and it remains three and [Applause] two and a pitch foul ball and it remains a full count [Applause] [Music] and he deals popped up moving under it he's there he's got it and there's a one away up next to the Dodgers the designated hitter sh sh Otani up to the dish he struck out swinging at his first hbat [Applause] Bo who doesn't love to watch Shi play baseball I mean voters certainly did when they made him the unanimous choice for MVP in the American League in 2023 it was an easy Choice he had that award wrapped up by August clober to right field way back off he made him pay for that one it's six nothing he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devours that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after it bat he's that confident a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of it and here comes the Yankees manager to the mound pitching change coming Nester Cortez Jr won't go any further and as he heads off we'll step aside for a minute back with a new pitcher after this break now on the bump Tommy kanley gets an opportunity to square off against his former team so I wouldn't be surprised if he came out a little extra jacked up right here one out base is empty Here Comes Max munzy he's already homered here in this one that pitch Clips it's a strike out oh there he gets the slider in on his hands and it just eats him off you know it's hard to get the bat around on a pitch like that in tight you just feel like you're crowded on the inside part of the plate can't get any extension that's what he definitely should have laid off of Freeman takes a ball as he stands in for the second [Applause] time right-handed reliever on the ground to third throws across the diamond and Freeman is retired and that'll do it two-run shot for the Dodgers this inning it's now a 6 nothing ball game Major League Baseball is on the show back in the Brocks ready to go for the last half of the inning here's the Yankees catcher now Francisco Mahia [Applause] and the pitch well every pitcher wants a run support and having a lead is nice but it can be challenging for some pitchers I think keeping the mindset to attack instead of trying to be too fine and have too much finesse go after hitters and get quick outs the two ball that's [Applause] out stays [Applause] alive and that's off the Inside Edge and it's two and two got him looking and he didn't like the call frustrating end to the atat for the hitter and I'm sure that's going to sit on him for a little while you want to be ready to hit the fast ball sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case right there birdie stands in now and watches strike one the Yankees nice run a catch and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that Strike Zone and Beyond and they just keep eating right out of your hand ground ball up the middle Betts gathers and throws the first Rizzo out of the play now bat third basem DJ and now it's DJ lameu digging in doubled in his first [Applause] a top of the zone and it's called a strike he's pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for success but he can never predict baseball that's toward Center outman settles underneath it he's got it and that is out number number three so they make short work of them there on to the top of the fifth we go it's the Dodgers seven and the and hit the ball hard you know line drives won't always find a hole but the more you can hit the ball like that with good exit below the better off you're going to be in the long run Will Smith steps this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the pl they've been chasing pitches outside the zone all game and it's led to some frustrating moments they've been fooled quite a bit today the pitch swings and misses struck him out the catcher number 13 Francisco Mahia coming up to hit struck out looking in his first back fast ball for a strike one out base is empty now One Missed I got a ball one [Applause] strike good eye in that spot and that's downed away oh they have had a hard time scoring in this one the pitcher out there on the mountain wants to keep attacking make sure that they comes bows it back with two strikes oh he's got to be pretty proud of this audience so far sometimes guys cower coming into a ballpark like this but he's attack hitters pitching on the road like this one right through there for a strike one thing with Max Muny and it'll be interesting to see what he throws here he hammers the fast swing and a miss and that one missed by a ton two strike popped up to the left into foul ground lahu pulls it in on the run the first Bas number five Freddy Here Comes Freddy Freeman up to hit this guy makes great contact one of the best in the game at putting Bat on Ball he's got such quick hands and he's gaining pitch recognition that keeps him Square to the plate there's a good chance that is it's in and out of his glove but plenty of time to recover and that's the second out the batter number second gav back to the top of the Dodgers order here's the second basem Gavin Lu [Applause] Fly ball pretty well struck right field that's bat didn't quite have enough it around doing what he does the pitch ball one definitely a frustrating day for the offense but when they look at it this guy's had his best stuff been paint in the corner working on the edges and changing speeds just a difficult one you tip your cap swing and a highfly ball down the right field line makes the grab for the second out now batting right fielder two outs Bas is empty here's wodo it's 9-1 that's their fourth home run of the game they can't stop and they won't stop hitting home runs in this one boo they're clearly feeding off of each other at the dish love to see a hitter aggressive on the first pitch of an at bat you watch him from the on Deck Circle so when you step in the Box you're ready to pull the trigger wherever it's at really good job by the hitter total conviction on that swing new pitcher now Ian Hamilton and he's been hit pretty hard at times this year so he's looking for better right now giving up more than a hit for any and now it's mukie Betts and the first pitch misses for ball one you know these Dodgers simply put are producing a lot of quality swings just look at how the ball's coming off their bats and tell me it's fun playing defense at this level they've got seven hits at 90 plus mph exit velocity so you got to look alive out there out of the left Center for a line drive base hit stringing them together that's three hits in a row just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great so a man aboard and now the center fielder James outman that's in for for a
