we Admiral Mike hu one of my besties a brilliant man indeed former US Navy and ex director of cyber warfare for the Pentagon mike always great having you join us on the show and I get to see you in person next week I can't wait um talk talk to me about what is going on at the moment in um in Russia and in the Ukraine we've learned that Ukraine's lost its first F-16 fighter donated by Western allies at one point there it looked like Ukraine was really beginning to make some progress and actually sort of um managing to get into bits of Russia and not just push them back in Ukraine but put them on the back foot on their own turf are things still going to plan no I think that's a that's a very fair assessment we've seen for the first time Ukraine actually move into Russian territory and take as much territory in the last five months as Russia's taken in Ukraine and I think the measure of this is now you hear the Russians actually discussing wanting to go to the negotiating table this is very simple when you own escalation and you create friction against what the Russians are doing you can drive them to negotiations the frustrating part for me is that we have not given the ukrainians the authority to use the very weapon systems that they've asked for to take on the Russians they've got one arm tie behind their back we've given them plenty of equipment but we always put limits and restrictions on how they can use it so basically zalinski is begging the West to let him fight our war for us and we should absolutely let him do that and is that the case in both the UK and America because my understanding was America sort of put restrictions on the sort of missiles they can use and where they can use them in terms of not using it on Russian territory but I I think I read somewhere that the UK's being a bit more like turning a blind eye to it and saying well go on then I hope so and I think there's probably a lot of things happening that we don't see um I only hope that we're back there giving them more equipment more authorities supporting them not with fighting on the ground but with intelligence and lots of things that we can do that don't need to be out in the open press and I certainly hope that's happening and I do think you're right I think the UK and many of the NATO Nations have said look zilinsky go fight your War how can we help you that's the message that needs to be sent the Americans need to catch up to the urgency and the importance of letting Ukraine fight this war the way they need to and let's talk about belus here because um I remember the precur of Russ going into Ukraine they said oh we're just doing military exercises along the border just big military exercises nothing to see here and I remember we had a conversation and you were like really uh and it did seem to catch a lot of people by surprise and you think well come on it kind of you know to bit of a red flag seeing all these troops and vehicles and they're like all sort of amassing right next to the border of Ukraine well it seems to me that the same is happening with the border of Belarus should we be concerned that they're going to Wade Wade into this War I think we should be I think what Putin has clearly demonstrated is that Ukraine is not where he's going to stop when you look at the Balkan Nations particularly Estonia laia Lithuania and then obviously bellarus which is on the fence here as a potential supporting element I believe that what Putin will do if he feels as though he's losing his high ground in Ukraine and he is he will take aggressive action maybe to Spur NATO to challenge NATO and really create this kind of weakness on the part of the West I think the biggest problem we had with respect to Russia is our concern about escalation when in fact we should control escalation and not be fear by it right yeah it seems to me when it comes to fight back from Ukraine into the cursed region of Russia that degree of escalation seems to have worked now Putin is apparently off to Mongolia next week the Kremlin has announced and um unlike belus the country is actually a member of the international criminal court which has issued an arrest warrant against the Russian president last year here um do you think that uh uh Mongolia is going to turn around and slap the cuffs on Putin what's going on here I I don't think so and I think what you're seeing Putin do is at least demonstrate that he is an actor on the world stage you've seen him host African nations in Russia you continue to see him meet with shei on International forums what you don't see him doing is participating in climate change you don't see him participating in things that really are meaningless on the World stage and in foreign policy but in fact he is creating new alliances while he's fighting this war to think that Putin is isolated and as a world leader is simply wrong right yeah it seems to me that when he sells his cut price oil and gas he's got a huge queue of people waiting to buy it off him and fund his campaign who frankly say well look that's a you know what's going on in Ukraine is a European matter and I don't think the West helps themselves actually by constantly making you know making us look like a sort of parody of ourselves you I've that Olympics opening cly I'll never get over it 99% of other nations in this world would have looked at that and thought it absolutely revolting and when Putin goes along and says oh look at all those Western Nations aren't they degenerates they'll probably be minded to agree um let's talk about what's going on with the telegram founder pavl Duro now my understanding is this guy actually set up telegram while he was in Russia uh on the basis of trying to evade the Russian authorities and to create some sort of app that would allow communication without having the knock of the FSB on the door um and yet he's got joint Russian and French citizenship normally he's in Dubai but he's landed in France and was immediately arrested he's now banned from leaving France he's avoided being held in custody because he's able to give 15 five million euros in bail now some people are saying this is a huge affront to freedom of speech but one thing I've read and I think you're exactly the person to ask about with this and I don't know if this is true or not that there could be a bit of a NATO plan here of trying to Strongarm Mr jurov into opening up the back end of his platform and letting them have a rummage around because we know that for instance the Varner mercenaries have often used telegram to communicate with one another uh do you think that this is potentially because the CIA quite want to get into telegram or is you know what else is going on here I think there we need to really look at right now between telegram WhatsApp Mark Zuckerberg's uh admission just this week that in fact under the Biden Administration he suppressed information that was relevant to many of the issues such as the hunter Biden laptop so what you've seen is publicly available information platforms such as this particularly the ones that are encrypted into end being manipulated and used for political purposes now I look at telegram as an encrypted app that in fact in most likelihood has a tremendous amount of information with respect to Russian Communications Russian statecraft they were using that platform in creating large groups to communicate back and forth in real time so my guess is one way to get to that back end as you described is to roll him up put pressure on him to release that information this will be a real test of the these private sector owned public platforms being bullied by governments and uh I think it's going to be fascinating to watch how this plays out yeah and I mean are you therefore sort of on the side of well all fair in Love and War and when it comes to enemies of the state using your platform to communicate and coordinate then uh we're going to lift you and we're going to say come on whose side are you on pick your loyalties or is this as perhaps someone like Elon Musk might uh frame it and I'm a big fan of Elon but is this actually fronts to free speech this is the real question right I mean I always say look if if terrorists are using platforms such as this to communicate to build bombs to to commit terrorist activities is it is it incumbent upon those platforms to protect the countries or is it incumbent upon the countries to get in front of these adversaries and you've seen this time and time again we've had terrorist attacks where the first thing that happens is they grab their phones and they can't get into them they can't break into the encryption to find out exactly what's going on often times we have to go to the Israelis and say hey help us get into this platform so you've got this issue where Apple Google and others are protecting their clients as we've asked them to do because we all enjoy privacy and freedom of of activity and speech yet the terorists are using that very freedom for their advantage so this is a very complicated issue that I think we really need to get in front of and I think it's emerging through this telegram conversation and recently through some of the admissions by Zuckerberg and others that in fact they were using their platform to suppress information or accelerate other bits of information yeah it's a fascinating conversation indeed
