e e e hello everyone and welcome we are surrounded by pageantry and tradition and it's clear to see that college football will be at its best today kickoff team has the ball teed up in there about ready to go from inside the 10 here he comes he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 all right guys here's our first look at this offense today this has an old school feel to it as this running back makes his way onto the field and All Eyes Are Fixed they are glued on him yeah the old school because nowadays it's usually quarterbacks and the other guys that get all the attention but this guy's so good he is the F fires a b and now it's picked off you know you hear a lot about game Jitters and nerves I'm not sure if the quarterback really felt fully convinced that's where that ball should have gone David because that just looked shaky from the GetGo yeah and and I think your your goal as an offensive coordinator so many offensive coordinators across the country what do they tell us I got to get my quarterback in a rhythm make it easy on him early that wasn't it you could tell a little bit of confusion and that's the opposite of getting him in a rhythm now you got him in a funk to start this game and the defense gets a takeway on play one this crowd bringing the energy and noise early the play action fak fires toward the end zone and good coverage there to knock it away and deny the score a little less room to work with now the ball is at the 28 and it's third and long from the gun wants to pass looking left and that pass KCK off and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception really early in this game you're seeing the ball Hawks on both sides of the ball interception on the first drive of the game and now they come out and this defense gets a pick and return there are a lot of dudes in the back end with speed with the ability to close what a phenomenal play by that young man just now to get the ball back to his offense they'll snap it from the 39 first and 10 it's a reverse turns it on in Midfield and he breaks into the open he's at the 10 touchdown did not take long to get into the end zone now let's see if this gets this offense to hit overdrive and we may have a situation here we might have points more points and more points you keep putting Drives together like that that quickly Tun Up that much yardage defenses are going to have to get something to take it out almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown and it'll be a Touchback the ball will come out to the 25 yd line East Carolina sending the offense back to work boy they hope this next Drive is more productive after throwing a pick last time Jesse Yeah and the coaches did a good job on the sideline there just talking to the Young quarterback and making sure he's able to turn the page calm him down to go out and refocus this drive yeah and some people do that better than others but you got to show some trust in him maybe get the ground game going help around him a little bit with this system and he dropped it it looked for all the world like that would be a catch and he just got too excited Here Comes his home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down he lets one fly deep and they couldn't connect on the Deep shot let's see if things get worse there's a flag on the field which way is this going to go [Applause] look you want to make the quarterback feel you you want to get pressure in his face that was so close but just a tad late got it behind the line it's Rose he puts him in business across the 50 into the 46 yd line it'll be first down and the Pirates come to the line with a new set of downs we we from the gun running back on the Move well just nothing doing on that last run and they knew coming into this one they were going to be challenged right this is one of the best defenses in all of college football for them to have any shot they're going to have to do a lot better running the football he got a hand in there knocks it away incomplete this defense is heating up they got an interception the last possession you could tell breaking on the football really really well seeing where the quarterbacks throwing it going to try to get it got another hand on it almost had another Inception and he's able to shed one tackle and gets a pretty good pickup so they're not comfortable with their field goal kicker from here so the offense will go for it on fourth down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down incomplete the defense holds and that is a big time drop right there fourth down opportunity to catch it maybe get the first down that is that is tough to swallow but as a QB I got to walk over to him and say listen dude we're going to need you later on I still believe it they've got the defense reeling right now with that big play to the 29 this offense always looking for those big explosive plays and now they've got it just inside the 30 they'll throw it on first down he's got an open man snatched it right out of the air and Walts his way into the end zone for the touchdown this offense is so explosive they can change the scoreboard in a Flash you just saw that on that drive and the extra point pushes the lead to 14 aggressive play calling on that drive just two plays they get the long touchdown pass to pay it off not going to give him a chance to make a play as they boot that thing through the End Zone East Carolina has it back and the purple pirate offense will go to work to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing an all cylinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up yeah and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that schi that you can use against this defense I don't like the play call you're down this much against the best run defense in the entire country you're just smashing your face against the wall you're not going to get it done to win this game you're going to have to throw the ball to get back in it's a draw he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple they try to go draw but it's just way too much penetration in the middle of the offensive line and that the offense has a negative play he gets his first one of the day out of there and they used him three times in that loss last week return's going to get it up around Midfield he'll be down at the 49 yd line three tight ends in the formation on First and 10 the give to the back and he runs through one tackle and picks up a few well it's plays like that that will help this offense stay in Rhythm all game long if you can have that kind of success on first down running the football it just opens up your entire Playbook moving [Applause] forward the big pickup on first down leaves them with second and [Applause] one from the shotgun the inside G well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up the running play and they get just enough to keep the drive alive they'll put it in play from the 40 on First and 10 they'll run it from the gun they'll pick up four second and Six coming nice run there on first down you know this is a running back that gets better as the game goes on so they're going to want to make sure they keep feeding him the football let him get lathered up dropping back it's Carter gets away unloads to the wide out final play of the quarter and the ball Falls [Applause] incomplete just about ready to get things started here in the second we'll see if they continue to flex that muscle a third down play to open up this quarter a little pre-nap eye candy for the defense snagged in the middle it's Bell just what this offense was looking for sets him up at the 26 with the first down fresh set of downs after the completion leaves it with the back and he was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play after the nyd pickup on first down here's second and one and he fights his way forward gets away from one but not much doing on that one play number seven on this drive and it'll be third and two they go into the creative space giving it to the wide receiver and the defense knew exactly where that first down line was and they stopped him short wide receivers running backs you see them they're interchangeable now you you see each playing different positions and handing the ball to wide receivers like you get here you you know wide receivers are getting the ball more and more in space but you're also trying to handle the football so they can make some plays get more touch especially those good guys not a great game but definitely a good job of getting wide receiver involved in run G that conversion sets a tone but that's also really part of their emmo they're going to go for it on point for sure yeah it's a body blow and it's demoralizing it's a good point Reese when you go for it like that you go get it you're essentially telling the opponent look you can't stop us next time we get in a similar situation we're going to do the exact same thing and there ain't nothing you can do with going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down after the incompletion they go back up top they'll finally get him stopped at the one yd line what a run there all right defensive ends you've got to do a better job not getting too far up the field on these pass rush situations you got to be able to retrace you can get to the level of the quarterback then you got to slow yourself down under control it's and it's a touchdown put six on the board and how about this play by the offense first and goal from the one yd line everything says it's going to be a run it's going to be a run nice job by the offense a little slight of hand throwing the football getting the touchdown and with the extra point they're up 21 to nothing lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown Drive on the move from inside his own 20 able to find enough room to get it out across the 25 he's brought down at the 26 East Carolina sending the offense back to work they're down by 21 points but you got a touchdown here and you do at least apply a little game pressure Jesse it's true I think for them to get back in this one at this point now they need the quarterback to play his best football he's going to have to be good really pre- snap David making sure they're in the right looks and he's got to be really good with the decision making he's got to be dowed in because defensively you're giving up points so it's not like you have the luxury for defense playing great the offense is going to have to score and score pretty dang quickly offense gets set for second down now the play fake feeling some heat and they got him for the sack often times with play action you're asking the quarterback to hold on to the ball a bit longer and you're asking this offensive line to hold up and pass for a bit longer against this athletic front seven on defense it's going to be tough you make up the game plan and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 the handoff as they run the counter play here nowhere to run on that when he loses four on the carry the Pirates send out the punt unit three and out and and not much choice but to get rid of the [Applause] ball he gets a block and the coverage team able to wrestle him down and the offense back on the field ready to dial up ball plays this has been exactly the way you draw things up David the offense has really been moving the football and it's been great execution they've done exactly what they've wanted to do build the lead now Palmer is a different animal now you got to protect it you can tell they were paying attention in practice this week in the film room because they have gone out everybody right now in the same P good execution they move the sticks and they've got it at the 33 this running back loves running into the teeth of the defense in between the tackles he keeps a low pad level and he's got some speed this will likely be the last play of the half they're trying to slow that Rush down with the draw that run epitomizes a veteran Savvy senior who knows how to find Space first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connor in our halftime update thanks man the end of a very entertaining first two quarters of football in Athens and there is no better place to start this halftime than by reviewing how this wide out has been a oneman wrecking crew the kid's been everywhere and I love how he's willing to go across the middle but that he also has the Jets to burn these DBS on the Deep ball if this defense wants to actually come back in this one they better hide his cleats with that said let's send it back to the guys at duly field inside Sanford Stadium all right Kevin about ready to start the second half here got things teed up and just about ready to go here in the second half this will not be returnable as it sails out of the back of the End Zone East Carolina has it back and the purple pirate offense will go to work when you're facing a deficit like this one to start the second half you really can't afford to waste a single possession fresh start here in the second half that's the only way you can look at this if you're on offense things did not go your way there in the first half it starts with one play to get our confidence going we just got to get something going early here on this drive one play Stay aggressive now now I think I can be even more aggressive on Fourth Downs because obviously I've built a deficit my defense has got to make some plays for me too you're down obviously at the half you had a conversation we got to come out and put points on the board and Jesse it looks like they're going to start with the ground game and I love this David too regardless of whether they're losing or they're winning come out here and try to be the most physical unit here in the second half get this run game established and good coverage by the defense just a short gain and the Pirates want to crank the tempo cying play action and he drops it just took his eye off of it at the last minute guys this offense is already reeling down multiple possessions really need to cash in on this drive on Third and long he has to throw for it they're setting up the screen defense do not Fool by that screen to the back and they'll stop him short of the marker it'll be fourth down one of the things I love about this defense is they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tackle to force the punt that is so well done fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way and that one will Sail Out of Bounds no chance for a return there okay so here comes the offense returning to the field first play of the drive comes from the [Applause] 22 he'll try to pop the draw getting that push a pick up of four out to the 26 well this offense came into the game knowing they wanted to be physical they wanted to establish the line of scrimmage and they're running downhill right at this defense and they're turning out positive yardage early running with power and he's brought down at the 40 yd line and that'll be a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of [Applause] downs now they'll run the draw continuing to turn and move it forward and they're closing in on Midfield it's down at the 48 you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense [Applause] trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here and they'll bring him to the ground after a short gain here they come on third down and the defense has had no answer so far they'll try to move the chains on the ground just what they were looking for and he's got him set up in business at the 35 with a first down and that's another productive run this offense has had a bunch of them today and the Run back I think this lead was built on this guy he's done a great job all game long setting the tone and I think that's why this offense has been successful and they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage is picked up well if you're going to be in the highman picture you got to make plays week in week out of receiver and that's what he does he's a good route Runner he's reliable and he's got speed to take it to the house top five in the nation right now in receiving ons and and it's incomplete if you're going to take a hit like that you might as well hang on to the ball the going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone second and 10 he'll throw again it's incomplete he was shooting for the end zone right there and that is the play the defense needed to turn the momentum around in this game they needed somebody to step up and make a play that should have been intercepted really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal they're bringing heat and this sophomore able to wreak some havoc and get the sack looks as if they'll send out the field goal unit this is not a straight on Kick a 42 yder from the right hatch it's good and that will extend their lead even further [Music] he keep pushing that lead out and the kickoff team's getting some work just unloaded on that kickoff don't have to worry about a return on a kick like that they'll bring it out to the 25 East Carolina sending the offense back to work they face a pretty tall mountain here Jesse down 24 but if they're going to climb it this is a good time to start since of urgency has got to be big right here you just get the feeling at this point of the game they and the pass rush is effective and they tackle him at the 19 and they are looking for a ball play that'll work now facing second and long from the 19 quick completion to the right and a good job in coverage there as they stop it after just a few they were able to make the completion but he had to pick his way for just a little bit needed a a little more help to Spring in for some yardage yeah if you're going to have success when you throw it outside like that you're going to need some more blocking and better blocking downfield and the ball is intercepted and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the [Applause] pick couldn't ask for better field position for this offense going up top on first down and it was worth going for a chunk play but the long pass is incomplete after missing the connection last time it's second and 10 from the 22 looking for a man it's Carter firing to the end zone had it in his hands for the score and let it fall to the turf it'll be third down man it's so hard to play defense nowadays you got a strike zone where you can hit people you get flagged for targeting you get flagged for pass interference that was beautiful great job in the end zone making it a hard window to throw into and when he caught it making him feel you right down the middle for the third straight play the pass Falls incomplete and the field goal unit is on the field and he's already one for one so this time he'll try to put one through from 39 yds out and it's no good and this will stay a three-score game at 24 they'll be able to get off one more play before quarters end looking for a physical attack from the gun and he's brought down after a solid gain and that'll be the final play of the third quarter [Applause] one more period to go and we'll see just how much fight they've got left in [Applause] them we'll get this quarter going with a second down Play 2 dialing up a second down pass play quickly to the tight end and that was some kind of collision between a couple of big bodies there and he stopped from getting the first down looking to throw for it and the misconnection on third down well this guy must feel like he's run into a buz saww in this game he has been under duress all game long and that's a big reason why he's thrown multiple interceptions in the game too nothing coming easy to him it's hard to see the field when your internal clock is going off so fast because of the pressure of this defense and that's why they find themselves down by so much here in the fourth the pirates with the first and 10 he's going to pass grabbed over the middle it's Staley really nice pick up there as they have it out to the 44 with a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs trying to find his man on first down just a short pass to the tight end and there were no creases or crevices to run through and they shove him out of bounds you know at this point of the game game guys trailing the way they are late in the game check down throws are not going to get it done you have got to be more aggressive in the passing game you're going to have to just start taking shots he's going to pass on second down using the quick game and they finally haul him down but not before the good catch and run they're down to the 35 on First and 10 he wants to throw can't find his man as he took a shot trying to deliver that football and it'll be second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again on second down they'll take to the air and it's picked off for the third time today and as a defensive lineman late in the game man when you know it's passed you're pinning your ears back trying to get to the quarterback and DBS are trying to do this had them stats get the int nice job by the off the play fake on first down to throw fires to the wide out wide open downfield that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the stop they came out hot on this drive one play and already near Midfield back to throw it's Carter looking down the middle got him downfield just carving up this defense and getting it down to the 24 any time the ball goes in the air towards him I feel like it's his like there are no 50/50 balls he just makes plays game after game play after play and you see him featured in this offense for a reason he's one of the best in the country not just at the wide receiver position the quarterback bought as much time as he could but the defense got to him and sacked him and and the offense sprung a big time leak and the quarterback went down and when you're throwing the football you're trying to stop the best athletes in the world from getting to your quarterback they're going to get there they're pinning their ears back get to the QB get the sack a first down sack can be a drive killer now it's second and 13 they're trying to get to it got it in the middle it's Bell they get him stopped at the 5 yd line but it will be first and goal from there defense is backed up shadow of the goal post trying to defend their own End Zone receivers telling the quarterback what they see fires to the end zone and it's a touchdown but hold on just a second we'll have to see what the flag's [Applause] about the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty this offens in scoring position with a fresh set of downs [Applause] was to throw on first down he makes a grab and he's able to bounce off one tackle for a solid pickup and this defense continuing to struggle with the passing game listen these offenses are so sophisticated nowadays they're hard to stop man and it's a new one every single week and and I and it'll be intercepted In The End Zone we've just seen in this game the ball has just gotten away from him a little bit a couple couple times just hasn't been able to put it where he wants to and as a result that's now his second pick thrown in this game wasting no time throwing on this drive fires to the big fella and the defense had that one well covered just a short game there well here's the problem offensively because you're trailing by so much so late in the game the defense now is going to be playing big Zone coverages and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field rally to make a tackle and bleed the clock it's going to be hard now for this offense to Calla their way back in this one quick timeout called by the offense after the play trying to preserve every minute possible and this set of downs gets started from the 33 first and 10 throws to the wide out and it is another interception just a terrible struggle for this quarterback and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception keep up them pass rushers bring in them DBS that's what I'm doing in this situ sitation when I got the lead by a couple scores late in the ball game in the fourth quarter I'm going to rush the passer like crazy I'm going to put all those DB's back play in the pass that's what happened great job understanding they're going to have to take shots we get the interception this one's almost over so with the late lead they're ready to just drain the clock in Victory formation and they'll take a knee on fourth down happy with their performance so far and they'll turn it over in the waning moments trying to to pick up a first [Applause] down this is what you're looking for when you have the better team go out and show it don't fool around with them go out and play to a standard of Excellence just dominate you know you're going to take care of business you know you're going to win it's it's like how many how many can I win by and I like that you keep your foot on the gas and just continue to e that for
