welcome everyone to University Stadium home to the Lobos of the University of New Mexico and the fans here are fired up for this Clash we're really looking forward to this matchup you've got a team that's made its way into the top 25 now trying to pass an all important road test the kickoff unit about to go to work here he comes from inside his own five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 the Lobos offense takes the field for the first time today and when you have a quarter guy the entire offense feeds off of him David inable P he's also one of those guys if he gets in a good Rhythm watch out this dude starts firing strikes a first down for the offense he Wast no time and comes out throwing and it's picked off and he's in for the score and after that pick six not the start this quarterback wanted you're going to have to be really good about having a shortterm memory and just turn the page there is tons of football here to be played you made a big mistake on that last throw don't let it beat you for the rest of this football game we've got a lot of ball left to play we got to keep going now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic and the pat makes it seven [Music] nothing they're about to kick it away and the defense probably can't wait to get back out there after the pick six he'll bring it out it's Jacobs not nearly as much as he' hoped when he brought it out out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 now New Mexico will go back to work on offense the big thing now don't get rattled by that last pick six David N it was a big mistake uh obviously the defense took advantage of it but you got to put it behind you Jesse I'm sure you know a thing or two about throwing a quick six and how to rebound I believe I've only thrown one in my life but yes I do because of that singular instance I'll say this you can't let that play Beat you twice you got to go out not try to get it all back here in one play Just execute the offense open the drive with a chunk play out past the 40 and they are in business on first down PS and fires complete to the right just slithered through the tackle and he's got room to run he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down that was a really nice catch and an even better run after the grab yeah and get the ball to your playmaker what's good about having him in the slot as he can go either direction you can get him matched up on somebody that's not as fast and you watch he can run away from those linebackers or safeties they'll snap it from the 36 they've got a first [Applause] down the RPO fire complete to the left running oh my goodness he's still moving almost took it all the way there but it's a huge gain and they're set up with the first and goal well after that last play you can see how electrifying this guy is and how special he is after he makes the catch if I'm on offense I'm trying to find a lot of ways to get him touches in this game Lobos will try to put one on the board on first and goal they'll try to get it in with the Run fighting for the end zone and he dropped it that football must be riveted to your rib rib cage how can you let it go at least they fell on it and as a defense you just want to steal some possessions create some turnovers you force the fumble but man what a break for the offense to fall back on it those are those are moments that you just get a little bit frustrated because it's just it's the luck of a bounce out of the gun the inside K he works his way all the way down to the three and the defense is reeling and with the stuff there Jesse on second down this little third to midrange you got two downs what are you thinking here maybe getting your quarterback out on the perimeter and giving him a run pass option see if you can get the defense in a bind they keep pushing forward down to the three but now it's third and goal on the Jets sweep Racing for the edge and the sticks and he takes it in for the score touchdown New Mexico number the on to attempt the try for the ex point splits the upright so that scoring Drive took only six plays and closed to deal with a three yd touchdown run and we're all square as he's set to kick it away he'll bring it back from inside to spot really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 here are our impact players this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching staffs this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play well they immediately pointed to these guys right here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the boxing SC but these are the guys are the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed you know I think a big part of this isn't necessarily scoring a touchdown on that plate but you're just trying to get your offensive line in the Rhythm of the game let those Big Fellas get lathered up picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down from the gun running back gets the give they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive that he's out there he gets a huge tackle for loss early that is a stat play Third and long and he'll try to throw for it and the pressure was too much they get him at the 15 how frustrating for an offense to not only see the extra defensive back but the dime package but still have their quarterback get hit yeah and when you go dime this is a passing situation and if you're a defensive lineman I'm pinning my ears back I'm not playing the slightest bit of run I don't care if they run the football I'm getting to the quarterback nice job understanding that rushing the quarterback getting him on the ground they bring the punter onto the field now getting our first look of the afternoon at the punter here's the fair catch but there is a flag on the field we might have to do this one again kick so the decision has been made and the coach will take the penalty so the offense keep just alive thanks to the roughing the punter penalty gets it out quickly boy that was a Precision play all the way around throw catch tackle Bang Bang Bang the quick passing game does several things one it doesn't let the pass rush get you those great defensive linemen the ball's coming out so fast they can't get there and then what else it gets me ahead of the sticks I don't have to worry about getting in Long yardage and predictable situations he's going to pass on second down makes the connection and he gets it to the 45 yd line and that'll be a first down and I love when you understand when I'm supposed to put some RPMs on that football you could tell he's thrown over the middle of the field he knows he's got Defenders there I got to throw this thing in there quick fast in a hurry nice job by the quarterback the offense getting set for a first down from the 45 they'll go back to the ground and this guy has some shiftiness to him and he showed it off to the defense after picking up a few well it's plays like that that will help this offense stay in Rhythm all game long if you can have that kind of success on first down running the football it just opens up your entire Playbook moving forward got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four they go to the ground he is tackled but it'll be a fresh set of downs and already this guy is leaving his on this game opening drive backto back runs where he's found a way to get positive yards he was able to pick up the First on that last carry they should keep feeding him the football the more success they have it's going to open up the Play action game now this is the way to come out of the gate and set the tone back and forth and already inside a minute to go in the first little touch pass to the receiver you'll take this every time five yards on the first down play well and on these little push passes timing is so important trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head of steam when he gets the ball he's hitting the outside and David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why offenses love to run it just it makes the defense communicate and see if you can just get him out of a spot he almost picked up the first down on that one but he'll be just a little bit short and these little touch passes man they're just the easiest for quarterbacks Palmer I bet you would have loved being able to just Flip It Forward that counts as to your completion percentage which is good and then it's all run after the catch so pretty easy for a QB you wouldn't have been the only allamerican in this Bo game if I were allowed had push passes when I was playing quarterback I'll tell you that it is so hard to defend it's so hard to seal that edge especially when this guy's Full Speed Ahead coming around the outside they fought to a stand still in the first let's see who gets the edge early in the second this will be the ninth play of the drive coming up it's a third and two he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a coup but how fast did they get in there and make that tackle for a loss if you blinked you missed it nice job by the defense getting penetration everybody up near the line of scrimmage shooting the gaps quick getting in the back field getting the guy ground they've decided to try to go for the field goal here this is going going to have to be Unleashed from 54 yd out it is good and with that field goal they now have the lead how nice is it as a head coach to have a kicker like this it makes these decisions on fourth down so much easier just strut him out there and let him stroke it through the uprights [Music] they were able to get a field goal on the board and now they'll kick it away the returner will field it and try to set up his offense in great field position nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 they'll come out on this drive and let it rip fires to the tight end just a quick Rhythm throw there and really good use of the tight end yeah good use of the big fell I mean go through your progressions real quick you can't find anything get the easy gain don't take a shot down the field all the time take those shots later but take those easy wideopen opportunities to get some positive chunks looking for space it's Sanders Quick Step and goal they get it out to the 36 and on the move after pick up of 15 but with the weapons this offense has you knew it was just a matter of time in the Run game before someone was going to break a long one they had just been running into a wall they just couldn't seem to find their creases and get enough movement up front but they finally got it there picking up the first let's see what happens next wants to throw on first down off the play fake and they took a shot on that one but couldn't make the connection it's incomplete you hear about shot plays all the time offensive coordinators love to take deep shots down the field they plan them they plan when they're going to do them and I bet you we'll plan to see a few more throughout this game second and 10 after the previous play the run from the shotgun and you can forget running in the middle against this defense defense is about firing off hitting the offensive guys and staying in your gaps everybody knowing where they're supposed to be you could tell the defense everyone was right where they're supposed to be nowhere to run they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here looking downfield it's dampier that pass not close as he got drilled trying to deliver it and it'll bring up fourth down yeah and third and long everybody is pinning their ears back and coming after the quarterback you try to throw a screens behind those sometimes they're very successful but this time defense played it great and the play went nowhere fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way signals for the fair Catch and makes it at the 20 first down here for the [Applause] offense out of the gun the inside handoff looking for a crease he'll get it up to about the 32 yd line before he stopped and it'll be first down I know this is an offensive line that has a ton of pride they want to come out each and every game and really impose their will on the dline they got just enough push there on that run play to pick up the first he'll pull it on the [Applause] read and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pickup well this is one of the fastest quarterbacks in college football and that's why the option's a good idea because if he can get out in space and has a chance to get down field he is really difficult to tackle and he's very difficult to catch as you saw in that last play getting a first down wide receiver shows motion quick pass on the Fly motion pass the 40 finally run out of bounds but he has his offense rolling with a first down and these touch passes it's so hard because there's always action off of it right if I fake this pass and I can run it up the gut or I can throw it and I just spread me out and make me defend so many things and you could tell they got on the edge quickly got the big first down from the 30 yd line on first down he's looking to throw it a little release to the back and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that that one listen running backs are not just running backs anymore you're going to be a wide receiver in today's football and a great job sneaking out of the back field get him the football letting them get some positive yards now on second and short after the first down completion he's looking to throw using the quick game a quick tackle may but he's got plenty for the first down and guys how many first downs is that just on this Drive alone I mean this defense allows one or two more drives like this and they're going to be gassed by the third quarter we've reached the two-minute warning and we'll see if the offense can build on this lead before the break on first down from the 13 yd [Applause] line he wants to throw he got it and it's in for a touchdown number 15 C score [Music] lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they're now up by a touchdown and a field goal at 10 so that scoring Drive took only six plays and they finish it by firing one in from the 13 for the score about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown and he'll turn it and try to get behind his blockers nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 we will get another look at this New Mexico offense running out of time here in the first half and they do have a chance to make this a one possession game and so you got to locate your best players and get them the football on this dri you're down in the game there's obviously a lot of football left David but on this drive in this two-minute situation best players got to touch the ball and this could get get into pressing mode right like you go into the half down a couple of scores it starts to the pressure really really mounts good opportunity to take some of that pressure off get some momentum energize this squad going into halftime looking down field it's stamp gets it out fast a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half it's first and 10 from the 31 he's going to pass safe completion on the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen pass as it just never developed well he comes up with the reception but not a lot of room to run after that yeah and I like the QB doing this I me I'm going to find ways to give him the football and see if he can make a miss and I'm going to bet most of the time that my guy is a little bit more athletic than that defensive guy defense won this battle but I like trying to get this guy the ball in space caught over the middle it's Miller they make the stop of this passing game does some damage and they move the sticks with the first down we' got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll try to get more points on the board before the break going up top on first down receiver looks it in it's complete put it right on him sweet play good pick up and they'll move the chains with the first down now really nice job by quarterback and wide receiver this is why you do film work this is why you throw on air all offseason I know I get Zone coverage I know exactly where I'm breaking I know exactly where to deliver the football nice throw nice catch and the Lobos want to move quickly comes out throwing on first down saw spot in the middle and the catch and run into the end zone touchdown Loos and I tell you what that passing touchdown man that should spark this whole team like The Comeback is more than on now like they got the touchdown they cut into the lead you want to get a stop and go into the half get all the juices all the excitement and be like listen the passing game's rolling we got this the comeb back's in full effect lining up to add another and it's up and good as they draw Just a Touch closer so that scoring Drive took only six plays and the points come on a pass from 39 yds out so they got the touchdown now going to put it in the hands of their defense to finish off this half and he takes this from inside the five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 here comes the offense on first down wide receiver now comes in motion leaves it with the back a strong tackle and wrap up from the junior man that de tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the half time update guys looks like you've got a great atmosphere today in Albuquerque and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top and with that let's send it back to the guys at University Stadium globals will kick it away first and we'll start the second half he'll start the return inside his SP he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as heo at the 18 they'll start this drive from the 18 yd line they'll open this third quarter with a run find some space enough to get five to the 22 it's a nice game but the big theme Here is they just haven't been able to get the Run game going on offense they've been very onedimensional they're just not being physical enough at the point of attack halfway there on first down it's second and five they'll run it from the gun gets it out to the 25 yd line a gain of [Music] [Applause] three so they're facing third and short from the 25 they'll try to pick it up up on the ground at the 35 he's loose he got a bunch and look close to getting a lot more but he's got the first down this is going to be a big key for him David with the lead here in the second half running the football right staying on the field and bleeding the clock yeah run the football you're ahead you can be a little bit more conservative but again this opens up the pass this keeps everything in balance for this offense after run run run now throw pulls it in nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down he threw that one with some serious Heat this senior quarterback doesn't need a lot of space to get it in [Applause] there here comes the offense on First and 10 from the [Applause] 47 they'll try the run and he didn't have a whole lot of operating after the Juke and he stopped for a short game it's just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six the give to the back and they'll bring him to the ground after a short gain this offensive line better figure out a plan for this D tackle he is tough to block with guy you might want to start double teaming him he's going to be a problem moving forward you saw all of his ability on that last play six play of the drive coming up they'll Run play action he LOF it high and deep down the left side and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on yeah and he had an opportunity to make such a big play listen he wasn't wide open with nobody around him but you got to make that play you got a little bit of space you got to haul that in make your quarterback look good and make a big play for this offense the punt goes out of bounds and a nice job to get them backed up I think they'll spot it right around the 15 let's see what the Lobos offense has in store they'll try to get outside open at the 25 that defense got gased but they finally get him to the turf at the 47 I bet that running back's eyes got so big when he gets that hand off going to the right and he sees the huge holes yes please the defense just didn't flow quickly enough all of the blockers had leverage on their men and that defensive line has to get off the ball a little bit better get some penetration to stop that outside run you look to be backed up and then suddenly you're not big play has them across the 50 and they'll have it first and 10 wants to throw it's dampier makes the pass it's caught they ripped off a big one and they get it down to a 27 that's a nice throw by the CU there when you're throw the running backs you got to make it easy on them so you want to put it right on their body make the catch simp and let them go to work like they did just there getting that first this offense is like running a Perfection drill in practice against air chunk play after chunk play and here they come again looking for room it's Sanders nice move to keep running and he was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play I think tackling is about effort most of the time it's about how much passion how much physicality can bring to get your guy on the ground refuse not to get him on the ground that's not a big back you got to get that guy on the ground you can't let him pick up an extra couple yards and stay ahead of the sticks they're trying to get to it under pressure and down he goes at the 33 and that is a great job by the defense containing and constricting the pocket there was nowhere for the QB to go and he did not have a lot of time he went down quick this is a third and long looking to throw and he needs a bunch they'll run the screen defense was not fooled by that screen to the back and they'll stop him short of the marker it'll be fourth down you got to love that on defense one of the most critical statistics out there is how do you play on third down how do you prevent the opponent from keeping drives alive right there tackling the catch you gave up the completion whooped you do you set up fourth and long you're going to get the ball back go get some water and celebrate it is true as he puts three on the board and it's a deadlock here in the third quarter after the field goal after that latest answer tied things up just about set to kick it away again looks like he's going to try to return it really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 so they start this drive from inside their own 20 at the 19 yd line they'll throw it on first down he's going for it all makes a catch on the left and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yard down the field before he's finally stopped what a beautiful throw and catch on this play and I love the job the receiver did tracking the ball in the air nice job of locating the throw and then hauling it in [Applause] that last big play has them in position to threaten here first and 10 from the [Applause] 37 Red Pass it's complete and they get him on the ground and that'll probably do it for the third quarter they fought tooth and nail through three and is all locked up as we take a look at the stats these two teams about to find out what they're made of as we open the fourth all tied up wide out in motion try to get the edge with a quick touch pass and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land love the aggressive nature of the defense on that play everybody playing with eye discipline they saw the pre-nap motion they knew who had the football and you saw guys play with excellent Instinct running downhill and making a tackle started this drive with a bang but now it is third down grab near the marker it's Williamson he's got enough for the first down they'll spot him at the 24 yd line and on that third and short I don't think he was unhappy to see that zone nope it's a great job by the offense hey see where the holes in the zone are sit down you only need a little bit of yards on this third down get the conversion move the sticks they want to just keep throwing it can't hang on and he'll tell you he really should have made that catch and he had an opportunity right in the middle it'll be second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again fast motion from the offense the play action fake and the Freshman will CH up a sack the defense just simply not fooled by the play action often times an offense you're hoping the Run f is going to slow down those pass rushers but man oh man they had their ears pinned back I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next County on Third and long he'll need to loosen up that arm oh he dropped the football he had it right in the middle of the field and just ran before he finished the catch it'll be fourth down [Applause] so here we are on fourth down and this field goal kicker is going to face all the pressure in the world never a doubt for this big footed guy 49 yd field goal is good all field goals are not created equal guys kicks in the fourth quarter to take the lead they just seem to carry so much more weight so give that young man credit getting out there and knocking that thing through the uprights with all the pressure with all the eyeballs on him he delivered so the kickoff team is out there ready to boot it away after putting up a field goal let's see what the defense can do on the run from inside zone five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 let's see what the lios offense is dialed up this time dbe they couldn't pay off that last drive with a touchdown now they moved the ball down the field and executed like they wanted to until they stalled out and had to settle for a field I think if you want to take the next step two here and score a touchdown you got to start finding more creative ways to get your best players the ball let's see if they can do that here and here comes the offense on second down down looking for a man it's Danier got his man down the middle that's a good job by the drag route there understanding its Zone coverage so instead of continuing to run across the field he settles down into an open spot making it easy for his quarterback passing game very effective on second down what about here on third from the gun wants to pass quick strike complete and he's brought down at the 40 yd line and that'll be a first down well look that wasn't a touchdown that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression and the Lobos will line it up on First and 10 [Applause] On The Run it's Sanders coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that sixy pickup on first down leaves him with second and four he's looking to throw good timing on the quick out he's out of bounds but not before picking up enough for the first down Precision execution and timing to pick up the first down on the out route I think you're spot on those out routes man it's got to be about timing you got to throw that football before he breaks nice job seeing it short yard situation throwing the ball on the money so the receiver can get up field and get the first down he'll come out throwing on first down grabed behind the line it's Sanders and there is nothing doing on that one you got the completion and nothing else to show for it and here comes play number six of the drive to the air it's dampier throws to the wide out got his man downfield slicing and dicing through this defense and they've got it down to the 23 nice job by the receiver on the in route there and how about the speed after he made his break he was able to actually separate a little bit from the DB helping out his QB on that one this offense absolutely humming as they come to the line again looking to go up top on first down fires into traffic intercepted not much on that return but I think they'll let him slide after making that pick and they'll have it at the 20 they'll run it to keep the clock moving nice solid form tackle from this sophomore timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible didn't get much on first down it's second and nine he leaves it with the back not a whole lot of progress made there on the short run quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense they'll try to move the chains on Third and short from the 25 from the gun wants to pass dumps it to the back short throw to the sideline complete and he'll pick up the first down and obviously getting the completion it's a killer they get a new set of downs you got to find a way to make a play now the Saving Grace I guess Jesse is he ran out of bounds and stopped the clock so at least the clock isn't running yeah and David it's just a situation right now defensively I think you just got to take more chances right you may have to Blitz you may have to sell out you might risk giving up a big play but it's just so critical at this juncture of the game that you're able to retake possession to give yourself a chance to win the clock will stop with this timeout from the offense they'll get a chance to regroup on the sideline all I'd expect we're going to get another dose of the running game at this point even though it's second and 11 from the gun running back on the Move he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and that's exactly what you would expect from this offense listen when you're in that one to two minute range and you got the football and you got a lead it's Smashmouth it's keep that clock running it's ground game so interesting now on this third down what they do next but we got to keep that clock moving and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker offensive coordinators don't really have play sheets for third and 75 obviously I'm exaggerating but when you put yourself in a bad situation backed up like this you know with mistakes and and negative plays not many plays in The Playbook you can call fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way fair catch was called for but there is a FL on the play and we'll have to sort it out personal fouling the kicker [Applause] defense the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty and they'll take a knee [Music]
