[Music] [Music] welcome everyone to Logan Utah and the Beehive State we're here at Maverick Stadium home to the Utah State Aggies and eager for this Clash what a scene this is a veritable Cavalcade of colors stripe after stripe that they hope leaves the visitors dizzy as we'll see a squad from the SEC the Alabama Crimson Tide taking on a team from the Mountain West the Utah State Aggie glad to have you with us for EA Sports College I'm Rees Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to tee it [Applause] up and the aies will get this season underway as to meets [Applause] leather and he's going to run it back [Applause] [Applause] the offense set for a first down play looking for room it's Stevens he get him stopped after a gain of four out through the 28 nice run there on first down you know this is a running back that gets better as the game goes on so they're going to want to make sure they keep feting the football let him get lathered up after the productive first down play it's second and six quarterback Quick Pass to the receiver out across the 30 to the 39 after getting 10 on that one and how about setting the tone right there like you're going to cover this guy coming across the field get it to him early on the first drive let him know this playmaker is going to be touching the ball early and often and he picks up the big game runs through the tackle and and he'll step out of bounds after a very productive play this running back just doesn't go down easy it's just difficult for defenses to get him on the ground not overly huge but if I'm an offensive coordinator I'm going to continue to find ways to feature him and just you know what let his talent do the rest 29 29 back to throw it's l he's got the back in the middle and they wrap him up but not before he's got enough for the first down well it's a nice play design there you're getting the running back involved in the pass game quarterback gives it to him early so he can go to work up field and get the first down Alabama Rolling quickly downfield set up with another first down give to the back not a whole lot of room there three yards maybe second and seven and that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road takes the easy one to the back on the move at the 30 and he almost ran away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play this running back is so dangerous he's going to hurt you running the ball but they find creative ways to get him the ball in the passing game as well beautiful job setting up the screen he was acting as if he was BL blocking let just having these dudes bounce off of him like popcorn and a good solid pick up there before the defense knocks him down going to work on second down in the red zone and still some ground to cover to pick up that first down now they'll run the draw they get him stopped at the two but it'll be first and goal I love when players understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to lot of people you'll see run north south and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's not about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of trying to make those big touchdowns see if they can get it done on second and [Applause] goal quarterback wedging it in there on the quarterback sneak wedges pushes and he's over and in for the touchdown you love as a head coach to watch your offense take the field and establish a rhythm and consistency the way they did there everything they dialed up was working to Perfection they go 10 plays on the opening drive and cap it off with the touchdown almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown and he's coming out of the end zone and the returner goes [Applause] down first and the offense lining up for a first down [Applause] play from the gun running back gets to give brought down at the 45 after a 15yd pickup man who says you can't run up the middle anymore right everybody thinks I got to make big plays I got to go way out to the left way out to the right way out in space nope right down the middle nice blocking how about the running back you could tell the speed the wheels does a great job getting down the field making a huge rushing play coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that got eight on first down now looking at a second and two he's looking to throw blasted as he lets it go that pass is incomplete and they might be fortunate it wasn't knock free for a fumble it'll be third down he didn't have a whole lot of time to get rid of that one the defense was all over him right after the snap no wonder that thing fell in couldn't pick it up on second down now they need a couple on third down they'll try to pick up the first through the air and they got him he'll get him down for the sack man this home crowd was so jacked up so excited to finally get the football after giving up points on the first drive and having to be quiet now they're quiet again how about the defense coming in here shutting this crowd up early and doing their job n gets Outfield and make the tackle right at the 16 yd line here comes that Alabama offense that last Drive really productive David wound up with a touchdown try to do it again yeah so I don't expect this offense to change too much ree they had a great Drive they got the touchdown everything working I don't expect him to keep pushing this ball down and just imagine if they could put another touchdown on the board right here they could capture so much momentum in this game with backto back TDS can't get him to the ground that's a nice pickup to give them some breathing room and they've got it out to the 27 really nice run there now listen you know modern day college football I know it's all about spread offense and throwing the football and Going Up Tempo and scoring quickly but man you think back to Bear Bryant and Alabama doesn't it always seem like they've always wanted to establish the Run game they have always wanted to be physical Bear Bryant would have loved this guy in his back field with his physical style of running man he fits that just perfect looking to throw its left going to let it fly and that one's going to be knocked down incomplete and we have knocked out the first quarter qu Alabama [Applause] Utah back on the field after the break and we'll start the quarter here on third [Applause] down goes to the option that one never had a chance incomplete incomplete the Crimson TI will bring the punt team on the field first time we've seen their punt team this [Applause] afternoon he only needs a sliver of daylight little pressure on the coverage team there and they'll stop him at the 47 yd line Utah State sending its offense back onto the field that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do you and attack them he sends three wide receivers left one on the other side on second and four power football with the Run they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one great team defense on that run play everybody doing their job people winning their one-on ones D lineman staying in their gaps linebackers and DB's filling you just can't do it better a third down try for the [Applause] offense from the gun wants to pass got it in the middle it's Silva putting together a real scoring threat here as they pick up the first down at the 36 the agies come to the line with a new set of downs looking to move it through the air got his man quickly nice move there and it is well blocked as they pick up enough for a first down what a weapon these wide receiver screens can be not only do you get a convoy blocking you get Dynamic running when you do this and you show me the threat of throwing this wide receiver screen it makes me play defense different it makes me have more guys out wide which opens the Box inside so I think it's really smart for coordinators of offenses to continually throw these screens to play now you don't get a lot of chances like that in games guys take shots down field and when you get open you got to finish the play The Wide out's going to wish he had that one back and he's able to find a little bit of Running Room before they get him down that's what's so great about these QB runs they just chip away at the defense and as this game goes on these little QB runs they're going to help keep third Downs manageable for this offense Utah state will snap it in the Red Zone off the RPO complete he's brought down but he's got him inside the 10 first and goal from the eight really nice play call there because the defense might have been thinking on Third and short in the Red Zone they're probably going to run the football ball instead they throw it catch him off guard and now they've got first and goal they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one it's amazing how play by a defensive end in the back field can really swing the momentum not only of a series but of a game sometimes all you're trying to do is create negative plays to get them behind the sticks a little bit to get those sacks to get those tackles for a losses you see so much stunting in college football up front with the defensive line because you know once you get one of those play you got the offense right where you are this offense has converted twice on third down on this drive a third time would put him in the end zone knocked off his feet second quarter might not be gamble time but inside the three Palmer I've got the green light I'm going for this I am too and you're essentially running a two-point play here right you've got a play you practiced all week long that's the play you dial up right here on Fourth and goal no thought of the touchdown the quarterback sneak pays off as he gets it across the goal line getting set for the point [Music] [Applause] average and it's up and good that last Drive covered 52 yds on their way to the score and it was finished off with the quarterback sneak and he takes this from inside the five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the [Music] 20 the tide offense rolls onto the field they just didn't quite find the Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're the more physical team if you can threaten the run and then then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposal the run from the [Applause] shotgun they finally make the stop with the big run is plenty to move those sticks for the first down the clock has stopped and we've reached the two-minute warning before halftime from the 44 yd line the offense snaps it on first down direct [Applause] snap a strong tackle and wrap up from the junior the Run game just has not been working for this offense all game long we saw it on that last play as well just not getting enough push up front on the offensive line they haven't been physical after picking up a couple at second and eight getting some heat safe completion on the screen just destroying his way through the field he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down well they pick up the first down there on the screen I love the offensive line there allowing the pass rush to get way up the field they completely baited their guys made them think that they got beaten that they were going to get the sack and then they sneak the running back SC right in behind them and pick up the first he's got 59 yds rushing already here in the first half it's a season opener but he's in mid-season form first down physicality wins football games being able to run the football and create balance and and right here just chews up another first down gives you another chance to maybe continue to run the football and I feel like this guy too is just an explosive play waiting to happen his vision his quickness and he's got a burst if you give this guy just a crease he's going to hit it right now he's doing some damage on this defense out of the shotgun they go to the ground you don't always have to run the sexy plays right it doesn't have to always be uptempo and fast and spread and doing all this stuff sometimes you just lower your shoulder sometimes you just run powerfully you get the first down and that's all that matters able to SC three yards out of that one somehow it's second and seven going to work in the Red Zone they can't pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone quick strike complete touchdown tie what a grab and goal for the score and I just love the execution by this offense late in the half man you want to take the lead you want to get that momentum on your side and they do it they finish it with the passing game and tell you what keep that passing game up you can keep this lead keep the momentum and keep putting up numbers and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven we check in with Kevin Connor what's going on Kevin terrific Showdown this week guys let's take a look at what's going on Miami is currently a big right now in a game they'll be talking about at to you for a long [Applause] [Music] [Applause] time they'll ride the running back and leave it with him got room at the 35 he's got enough for the first down they'll spot it at the 37 Utah State Up Tempo linebackers moving trying to confuse the quarterback takes a hit as he fires hit hard as he released the ball on that first down pass and didn't never had a chance well the offensive line has got to give him at least a little bit of time to survey the field he had no chance that time getting hit almost immediately after he got the [Applause] ball wants to fire on second down he's got an open man and he was loose and in the open field and on his way a tremendous pick up on that one defense just didn't have an answer there on the slant throw once the completion was made they just couldn't get to the ball carrier and get him down on the ground Utah State comes to the line with a first and 10 used the play fake now to throw LS one high and deep and they dialed up a shot play but they couldn't make the connection Hey listen quarterback didn't get the completion on that but that doesn't mean you can't try again trusting your Playmakers outside to push the field and stretch it vertically and make a play for you it won't surprise me to see this QB take more shots as this game goes on nowhere close on that one as he got thrilled trying to deliver the football and now they face third down if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long trying to have a big completion here complete to the left and he'll take it in and house it touchdown Utah State yeah and the passing game comes through man and we need more of that in the second half an extra point away from tying this football game we Trail a little bit the first half stayed calm if this passing game can continue to heat up look out in the second half returner is going to try to see what he can get and the coverage team able to wrestle him down and the Alabama off will take over first and 10 running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the break the give out of the gun breaks the tackle now after that run they in pretty good shape at the 30 yd line they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more playoffs solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six back to throw it's lamb oh what a spectacular layout in catch and this junior quarterback shows you why the scouts love that big arm of his we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connors in our halftime update ready to start the second half Alabama will kick it off and he'll return it and try to get behind his blockers nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 first and 10 [Applause] Utah state has it back ready to go to work on offense first drive of the second half always fun to watch you see what type of tweaks were made at the half especially when you're locked up in a ball game like this one yeah and it's been a good game I mean it's been a little bit of back and forth and a feeling out process and now once you get to the second half who's going to get aggressive B who's going to take some shots try to make some plays and really go for it yeah it's interesting I think as play callers right now you learn a lot about these coaching staffs with respect to who does make the best adjustments there's a lot of coaches that believe we're just going to be who we are we're going to keep doing what we do we're just going to do it better but then there are others that tweak things a little bit on offense and on defense we're going to find out here they'll try to muscle their way forward on Third and short from the [Applause] 29 and a quick shuffle pass underneath and I think third and short is the perfect time to run rpos cuz I can give the football or make the read but I got to make sure in these situations I'm accurate with the football either way wasn't accurate with the football now he got a fourth down situation makes the catch at the 30 he gets it up to the 34 yd line before he stopped and that's where the offense will set up shot and now the offense will come onto the field [Applause] again out of the gun the inside hand off looking for a creas they'll get him at the 45 but he got 10 on that one this running back loves running into the teeth of the defense in between the tackles he keeps a low pad level and he's got some speed the offense getting set for a first down from the 45 they're getting this guy lathered up man through the contact they sto him just a link or two short of the first and man what they can do on second down here and they'll come to the line with less than a yard to go they try to pop a run on the draw and they make the tackle but he has plenty for the first down so far everything's just seemed to work for this offense when they wanted to run the football regardless of what down in distance it is they're able to get it done up front getting a lot of push and these backs are finding the holes looking to throw it's l they'll throw it to the back on the screen they finally get him sto but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some lanes for their running back the Crimson Tide comes to the line with the first and 10 Red Pass it's complete and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the stick I like the decision by the quarterback here just get the ball out of your hands get it to your playmaker a lot of sometimes he'll dance and make even bigger plays than he did here but it was still a positive game and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the turf and finally the defense is able to get some pressure on this quarterback theyve been trying all game long different ways to affect him weren't able to get there but on that play because of the pressure it affected his accuracy that's why the ball Falls inom balls at the 22 third and short coming can the Defense Force him to settle for a field goal he'll a and that might have been a bad read as the defense just swarms all over the pitch man they're trying to run the football there's just nowhere to go for the ball carrier inside he tried to bounce it to the outside that linebacker way too fast he met him there and force the tfl running for it on fourth down smashes through the tackle touchdown Crimson tied and with that they've got the lead here in the second half number 25 man these ball carriers they've got a lot of ability in the open field their ability to make people Miss but also show off the Speed you saw all of that on that play ready to try the point after and with the extra point the score is now 21 to 14 they put together a 65 yd drive for the score and it was capped with an explosive 22 yd run he'll bring it back looking for help nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 first and [Music] 10 guys the Utah State offense about to give it another go boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here opponent yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this drive yeah and you see running backs in today's football they play a wide receiver basically for you but you got to find a guy that you can throw it to and you know he's going to catch the ball consistently crosses the 30 he got away he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down for this offense defense showing plenty of pre- snap movement at their own hand off from the shotgun he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple brings up second [Applause] down this offense has a second down play [Applause] the p and throw off the RPO and that defense doesn't allow a cut back and they get him out of bounds after a short game a third and long coming up [Applause] here now the play fake dances away he Chucks one out to the right and this is dropped incomplete pass he had a a huge gain in his fingers and he couldn't hold on Utah state will be forced to send out the punt team and The Return Man is stopped and that'll leave it up to the offense on the next [Music] Drive looking for a productive play on first down easy they'll give it to the back he's stuffed after picking up one to the 23 didn't get much on first down it's second and [Applause] nine back to pass it's lamb setting up the screen keeps the legs moving not a whole lot of room there on that screen pass as it just never developed yeah and you're going to see this offense find different ways to get this running back involved it's not just going to be on handoffs and they're certainly going to line him up in different places and even throw him the football but the screen game is a big part of it too they're trying to get him going there on the option they get him on the ground and that'll be the final play of this third period the of third qu 21 Utah state looks as if the tide will punt it away he'll try to really get into this [Applause] one fields to punt and tries to help improve that field position and he'll work his way on the return out to the 35 yd line before he stopped [Music] it Utah State sing Against offense back onto the field David the hter got some work last time they'd like to keep him on the sidelines in this drive yeah it's not something you want to say very often you don't want the pun this offense need to get back lathered up and get a little bit more of the r best way to do that identify where your best players are and just get them the football give these guys some touches to Kickstart this offense tried to pound it on first down now back to the line he's looking for an open man on second down good timing on the quick out and he goes down after making the grab picks up a few but still short of the first down well the offense trying to attack the perimeter of the field in the passing game and how about the the sweet feet by the receiver on that play who doesn't like a little dash of the yarts with their football a little ballet moment there Quick Pass to the left trying to get it to the marker and he's going to be just short of the first down it's going to bring up a decision for this coach they were really hopeful he could make a guy or two who Miss and pick up the first down but he comes up a little short yeah and it's great defense it's defense understanding where the sticks are not missing tackles getting the guy on the ground quickly really nice job by the defense understanding the situation here we go with the run on fourth down and they'll move the chains and get it to the 47 yd line that's the mindset of this entire offense they're not going to let you off the hook just because it's Fourth and one and that running back he wanted the ball too you could see there right after to the third down play looking at his sideline saying give me the ball I want to go get this I'm going to make a play for my team and he comes through Big Time small gain I know but again the defense knows he's going to run the football he's willing to run the football not just drop back and pass make him on to the Run game you got to do a lot of this quarterback wants to throw on second down he'll off one deep down the left side touchdown Aggies hold it in just kept right on running to the Hallelujah land quarterback's abilities to read the field is huge and also the anticipation the timing to be able to throw the football Jesse and hit a guy in stride so he can get run after the catch and get in the end zone that was a nice job by the quarterb yeah it's critical David listen a lot of times touchdown passes aren't thrown into the end zone you've got to read the coverage hit the open guy and let him do the rest slip through the line oh what vision there he goes open it up he'll take it to the house touchdown Alabama he just took it the entire length of the field end to end Coast to Coast Nationwide for the touchdown and how about the fans in the stands going no no no no no take a knee take no yes yes yes yes over a 100 yards for the kickoff return nice job taking out of the end zone making a huge play and let's check in with Kevin Conor's in the studio Kevin fellas a big time top 25 duel let's get right to the pictures verginia is ahead right now in Charlottesville but that's not exactly Shawn Moore out there dominating this one we are a long way from being over they're up by four over Washington State we'll Circle back if anything big happens in this college football matchup thanks for the update on that one Kevin let us know when it goes final [Music] [Applause] to the ground with the back a seven yd pickup it'll be second and three I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points good spot after that seveny pickup on first down it's second and three unloads quickly and he was loose and out the gate and doesn't go down until he gets to the 48 yd Line This offense is like running a Perfection drill in practice against air chunk play after chunk play and here they come again off the play fake on first down to throw fires to the big fella and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one that's why they got to keep running the football man because play action is going to be a big part of this game plan you've got to get this tight end over the middle of the field vertically and give him an opportunity because you just saw how dangerous he is after the catch here's a quick throw out to the left and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land trying to pick up a first down defense trying to keep this offense from getting a line on who block he'll just keep slinging it lost one deep down the right side and it goes through his hands oh he had an explosive play right there for the taking but couldn't reel it in you know I feel for this offense if they're going to get back in the game I don't know if they're going to be able to do it with chunk plays they're going to have to be methodical and generate some first downs and March down the field on fourth down trying to find his man makes a grab enough for the first and this will fall incomplete and they'll turn it over on downs and that's such a good job by this defense this offense is trying to find a spark trying to get back in this football game they're trying to be aggressive the defense answers and now you put your offense in a beautiful position to go out execute a really good drive and put a little distance between the other Spar and a nice run there before the defense finally makes the stop I know exactly what I have to defensively we've got to get the stop so we're playing run we're selling out to run because we're thinking they're going to run the football and we got three timeouts let's use them wisely let's use those timeouts save as much clock as we can so our offense has some time on the clock to do some damage when they get the football back here we go third down and one let's see what you're made of quick touch pass to the receiver they'll move the chain good execution on third down they've got it at the 41 timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible the tide with the first and 10 easy they'll keep it on the ground the clock is on their side he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and [Applause] 13y he'll try to do it himself he found a little opening and got loose they couldn't stop him in the back field so a solid pick up there defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense it's third down now and they ought to be able to get off one more play before the two-minute [Applause] warning got it looking for the first down he ended up going backwards on the play and they will not convert that third down we reach the two-minute warning in this offense trying to milk this clock and keep time on their side Alabama will bring the punt team on the field he's going to try to flip the field with this one [Applause] no opportunity to run it back as the ball goes out of bounds Utah state has it back ready to go to work on offense these last couple of drives Jesse have been about the defense making clutch and the pass is intercepted and after the interception and the turnover this defense has set its offense up for business that's a tough deal for the offense right I mean you're trailing it's late in the game you're having to throw the football you're just trying to make something happen and B gets away from the quarterback ends up in the hands of a DB nice job by the defense they'll use the running game on first and goal Relentless top one and gets it down to the four and this guy really has been a Workforce today he's made plays when his offense has needed them the most he's a guy who's reliable they know they can turn around give him the football and he'll go make things work out they're going to need him to finish this game he has to continue playing well after that big run right defense if they score it's around it's over so we got to find a way I know the clock's our enemy but we got to find a way to get a stop put ourselves in a position we can get the ball with some clock try to go down and make something happen offens jumped on top of the pile and how about the response from this defense put in a horrible situation horrible field position Jesse they bow their necks three times in a row yeah and it's a sudden change situation and they practice that all week you never know when they're going to come up but you have to have guys on the field playing with a sense of urgency this has been awesome defensively it is true as he puts three on the board and now the lead is even bigger you know it's funny in an age where there's so many college football analytics and everybody wants to go for it on fourth down at the end of the day it still comes down to managing good decision by the head coach here in the fourth quarter by kicking that field goal you've now made it a two- possession game your chances of winning this thing have now gone way [Music] [Applause] up guys the Utah State offense about to give it another goal they're starting to feel a little desperation here David they just can't press yet it's go time we got to put some Drives together down multiple possessions Jesse we don't have any time to waste yeah so at this point of the game your best players have to touch the football you've got to dial up play getting your biggest Playmakers involved now if you're going to win this game wants to throw on first down fires to the wide out oh and he drops it on the crossing route on first down he knew that defense was bearing down on him it'll be second down I like the idea by the quarterback he wanted to attack the middle of the field he found his open guy receivers just got to be able to make a play for him second and 10 he'll throw again he's taking the Deep shot grabbed in the end zone for a touchdown and there's still a hill to climb but they are still fighting staggering stumbling but still upright and not finished yet and it's up and good as they draw Just a Touch closer quick strike offense on that three play scoring Drive 35 seconds remaining they'll line up for the onside kick to try to pull this thing [Applause] out that's why they call them the hands team they're able to secure the onside kick yeah and this is why you put your hands team on the field most of the time when you know it's coming and you put those guys that are great catches of the football the first guys what they do do they go blocked they go blow somebody up the next gu catch the football secure get your butt on the ground and most of the time when you do this the ball game is over he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three really nice job stopping the run but the problem is you have zero timeouts left you cannot stop the clock right now if you're the defense so this has got to be excruciating for them they know the offense is just going to take their time before they snap the ball and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the stop from the 22 on First and 10 he'll try to pop the draw he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of [Music] three plenty of fireworks in this one a lot of points they always talk about having to chalk last and it seemed like whoever was on offense had the last lap it's amazing how much offenses has just boom in college football so good so many ways to hurt you and you saw both of these offenses put on a show today Jess Dave we talked to both of these coaching staffs and their defensive coordinators were losing sleep all week they knew this was going to be a tough task ahead of them so much speed so much Firepower on both of these offenses and man we saw that here today that's going to do it for us from
