[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome to Provo Utah lavel Edwards Stadium at altitude altitude that's been piloted by the likes of young McMahon and dmer and home to the BYU cers the Bears will kick it away to start he'll start the return inside his SP and the return man showing great vision to be able to find some space and put his team in much better field position so Baylor's offense is on the field for the first time today and here he is let me tell you about this wide receiver he is a rout running DB toasting pass catching touchdown scoring woo son of a g I can't wait to see how this defense is going to try and coral this guy because you play manto man you risk him running right by you and catching the Deep ball you play zone and you give them the opportunity to potentially make yards after the catch you're going to have to be really careful trying to cover that dude picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down they'll run it slams ahead for a yard out to the 33 now that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road third and six and they'll need a big play here on this opening drive fast motion from the offense third down and they'll try the Jet Sweep he's run out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down we know this quarterback has a ton of speed and they were able to have success on that Jet Sweep play maybe down the road you might see the quarterback pull the football keep it himself and really keep this defense on their heels give to the running back he's brought down but not before they pick up the big first down first down physicality wins football games being able to run the football and create balance and and right here just chews up another first down gives you another chance to maybe continue to run the football and I feel like this guy too is just an explosive play waiting to happen his vision his quickness and he's got to burst if you give this guy just a crease he's going to hit it and right now he's doing some damage on this defense ran the ball on first down let's see what they do on second on the run it's Reese they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one it's a bad sign on offense when you have that many people running free get your running back that means guys up front aren't getting their blocks just too many hats getting to the ball carrier I love his effort making multiple guys miss but still it's a negative play they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on third down he drops to throw they'll run the screen finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down well they pick up the first down there on the screen I love the off defensive line there allowing the pass rush to get way up the field they completely baited their guys made them think that they got beaten that they were going to get the sack and then they sneak the running back SC right in behind them and pick up the first quick touch pass to the receiver got some room headed to the goal line touchdown bail and they'll put that scoreboard operator to work and put six on the board you want to talk about a great way to start the game and set the tone early it's so nice to have a quarterback just get himself into the game get himself established you make a couple throws you lead your offense down the field you score right off the bat could not have been a better start for that QB the Cougars offense will try to get something going with their first possession as we take a look at out for this game David what do you look for to make an impact from your leaders your leaders not only have to lead the football team but they got to step up and make plays on the field keep everybody calm these guys typically do a really good job of them yeah David and they also generally set the tone for their respective football teams regardless of which side of the ball they play on the teammates look towards them to step up and big games like this offense getting set for first down easy they'll ride Davis here they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and how about the timing of the linebacker on the blitz to get in the back field and get the tackle for loss is there anything better for a linebacker than to run on a blitz and nobody's home except the back such a great feeling when when the Moses pars the red see and the hole opens up and you go filling didn't have much room to run and not a whole lot of help short gain there and still plenty of ground to cover for the first down well he comes up with the reception but not a lot of room to run after that yeah and I like the QB G this I mean I'm going to find ways to give him the football and see if he can make a miss and I'm going to bet most of the time that my guy is a little bit more athletic than that defensive guy defense won this battle but I like trying to get this guy the ball in space number U will bring the punt team on the field they'll have to punt for the first time this afternoon slips through the line tries to find a little more Running Room on that return but he'll be stopped at the 36 Baylor has it back and here comes the bear offense Jesse looking to take it down the field for back-to- back touchdowns it's really important for them moving forward too to have a lot of balance right you want to be able to keep this defense guessing H yeah and you got me searching for answers after that last drive you stack another drive on top of this their defense's heads are going to be spinning all over the place that penalty moves the ball back 10 yds will replay the down offense set on first down here's the handoff that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there oh man there's some big hitting going on in the trenches right now this defense they take a lot of pride in stopping the Run let's keep our eye on them throughout the course of the game and see if they can contain this running attack got line getting set on second down moves wide out in motion Jet Sweep to the receiver not a whole lot of progress made there on the short run and that's just a great job by the defense shutting down that Jet Sweep you see the team speed they have on defense they are willing and ready and able to go sideline to sideline with anybody in the country Ball's at the 29 defense can taste getting off the field it's third and long the back goes in motion on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose downfield and that one's incomplete they weren't just trying to move the chains they were trying to move the scoreboard instead it's fourth down and the Bears send out the punt unit a fairly short distance here toward the side Sidelines not his best [Music] [Applause] work the BYU offense headed back out to go on the attack the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out Jesse he just had no rhythm in that last drive so someone's going to have to step up and make a play David and get this thing going yeah let's find some juice find your guy find those plays that you know you can run inside out forward backwards get some first downs get some positive momentum now on first first down from the 43 yd line power football with the run that play just never had a chance they knock him down for a loss of five man A lot of times when you Blitz that linebacker it's about timing you don't show your hand and he gets up to the line of scrimmage gets right through the line makes the tackle for a loss and as soon as the running back gets the football he's got a face full of linebacker not much you can do there you got to have a little better block you got to identify that Blitz a little bit faster by the offensive line well able to generate an explosive play here with a designed QB run he shows you his speed I know the quarterback's going to carry it but this defense wants to make him feel it when he does yeah he's physical and he's tough but we'll find out just how tough he really is I'd be curious to know how many carries this guy can withstand in this game looks as if BYU will have to pun it away a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work here comes the Baylor offense back onto the field here's another opportunity Jesse to stretch out this lead after punting last time I think it goes back to your Playmakers reys I think it's finding the guys that have been working for you earlier on in this game and getting them the football yeah and there's obviously no need to panic I mean think about it you got the lead you got the football you got to be smart with the football make your plays put a good drive together here [Applause] that's the end of the quarter and it's Baylor holding the edge we've played one before we move on let's have a look at the stats will start the quarter offense about to snap it on second down oh it's a reverse really nice pick up there as they have it out to the 44 with a first down and how easy was that there's so much speed on the field in college football and you get me lined up and I'm trying to play coverage and then all a sudden that guy flies across the formation and now everybody on the defense has to adjust they didn't adjust quick enough and he easily picks up a good chunk of yards the offense has really got good game plans to get guys the ball in space all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point got three on first down it's second and seven looking for a crease it's rease and they're able to shove him to the turf as they stop him for a short gain well they're going RP nice job handing it off and really good Vision there just getting what he can get right puts his foot in the ground gets forward helps this offense find positive yards how bold will they be on third down after that last run they want to throw it got it in the middle it's golden he gets the job done on third down they move the chains it's at the 37 really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done to the ground with the back all the way down to the 25 yd line they move the sticks it's first down first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game headed for the corner on the Jet Sweep nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry and to stop the Jet Sweep you've got to be great at containing you have to have players in the perimeter of your defense funnel the football and force it to go back inside that time that defense was not allowing that receiver to get outside put themselves in a bit of a bind with that last one is second and 14 he's looking to throw got it set up on the outside he will step out of bounds but not before the big pickup and a first down for this offense hey man sometimes you get the perfect play call at the perfect time that time the defense blitzing offensive line allowed everybody to run up field and they slip in the running back screen and behind it there was nobody there to make a tackle and this offense generates a massive play and listen they didn't get the huge playoff of that but but I love the ability to show that and be able to show plays off of that that jet motion and just show them you're willing to complete it but you know get those little chunks at a time it doesn't have to always be a home run that's still a successful partner I love this linebacker because he's able to dissect what's happening in front of him and he reacts downhill uses his speed to get to the line of scrimmage and create the negative play boy they love to move the sticks here and take a shot at it on first and goal on Third and long trying to have a big completion here that has not close as he got thrilled trying to deliver it and it'll bring up fourth down so they'll send out the field goal unit that is no good and the margin remains at seven after the Miss well everybody in the stadium thought that was an automatic three not so fast bad Miss by the kicker they'll run it out of the shotgun Bulls his way forward he's knocked down to the Back Field a swarming defense and he'll lose seven they're going to be in a world of hurt if they don't get this thing going forward here on second down from the 13 he's looking to throw try nowhere to go and the ball is loose oh and they Coral the ball so they avoid the turnover but man did they lose a chunk of yardage this defense has kept them backed up now one more stop and they can get off the field on Third and long the give to the B and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker we reached the two-minute warning and we have ourselves a ball game and they have a chance to take the lead here before the half fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way no fair catches here looking for room little pressure on the coverage team there and they'll stop him at the 4 Y Line Baylor has it back and here comes the bear offense you want to talk about taking the wind out of your sails Drive the ball down the field and miss the field goal D you know what don't leave it up to Kickers execute better offensively I I think you move the ball nice you got to keep that in mind but Palmer I think you got to stay aggressive and don't settle for field goals yeah because you got to know there's just no margin for error right now you just have got to be able to execute at a higher level man you could tell the QB saw space immediately forget the reads forget anything else I see all that space I'm going to go attack it right now and make the big play safe completion on the screen on the mve the 30 he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down and they executed that running back screen to Perfection quarterback held on to it he let the rush get to him offensive lineman got out in position and the running back it too once he had the ball in his hands he just had blockers and Green Field out in front of him they pick up an explosive play on a running back screen how many first downs is that alone you know just on this drive the defense they keep this up they're going to get worn out continue to have to play more and more guys they got to do something to change this he'll do it himself he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three I just love the way the defense prepares each and every week we see this defense come out and it's like 11 guys they've got their head in the game and they're playing as one unit they knew it was going to be tough facing this option game with the quarterback and in the running attack but they've just done such a good job so far staying home playing their assignments you saw it on that last play right there rallying to the football nowhere for him to go and creating a big loss it's looking like they're going to have to try to throw this one into the end zone here on third down David quarterback's got to be careful careful can't get greedy cuz you know these windows they close fast extremely tight Windows find your big body guys that you NE finish the run in the end zone touchdown Bears lining up for the Pat and the extra point makes it 14 nothing so that scoring Drive took only six plays and what a way to finish it with a 9yd touchdown run and he's going to bring it out of the end zone rolling the dice to bring it out of the end zone did not work out as he stopped at the 13 pyu has it back the Cougars ready to get into that Playbook now they're backed up here Jesse wonder how aggressive they're willing to be I think it's going to come down to how much confidence they have in this quarterback and his decision making because you cannot throw an interception at this part of the field with this little time left and I think that's conversations you've had with a young fell on sideline be like what are you comfortable with right here that we can run maybe stay aggressive but make sure I don't make that mistake it's first and 10 from the 31 looking to move it through the air receiver looks it in it's complete a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half to the air on first down going for the big play and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on and the offense clearly saying we want to take those deep shots you want to be aggressive and and I think that's a good strategy because makes the defense really honor what you're going to do and just missed a little bit but I wouldn't be surprised if this offense finds a way to come back to some of those def things we've got a timeout in waning seconds of the half maybe a chance to get off a couple more plays and they'll have to settle for a field goal try and there is a degree of difficulty with this one a 47 y from the right hatch he's got it showing off that big leg from 47 yds out so they get the late field goal right before the half and not much time after this kickoff for an answer on the run from inside his own five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the [Music] [Applause] 17 they'll have just enough time to get one more snap before the half off the play fake on first down to throw looking deep down the right side and he's got it inside the 20 they finally get him stopped man oh man did he almost make a play to end this half but stopped on a touchdown saving tackle we played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connor in our halftime update the Bears will try to kick this one deep to get things underway in the second half and they thought about a return Then thought better of it they'll bring it out to the 25 the BYU offense headed back out to go on the attack maybe adjustments or attitude or attitude adjustments they've got to find a way to run the ball at least some here in the second half I do think you said something that's important I I think running the football is an attitude like it's start from the offensive lineman and being physical having a nasty attitude running back same thing I think they need more of that in the second half you know and I think then if you're this defense you have an opportunity to make a statement here yeah I know you guys went in at halftime you riled yourselves up and you told that you think you can run the ball on us on this very first drive we're going to prove to you just like in the first 30 minutes you cannot and this offense just has to find a way to convert this third down or else they are really in trouble finds his Target down the middle and he gets it up to the 36 it'll be a first down BYU right back to the line it's tough on the defense there third down you're in zone coverage everybody's watching the quarterback and you're trying to make a break on the ball but he just got it out of his hands too quickly and the throw was too accurate really nothing you can do there and it's now a fresh set of downs after losing a couple on that last play here's second and 12 he's looking to throw caught near the sideline it's Davis and he is going to be forced out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage tremendous defense there if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long he'll have to turn it loose deep makes a connection that defense got gased but they finally get him to the turf at the 47 cougars are moving quickly down the field comes out throwing on first down almost head the completion just missed it o there's there's an example Jesse of a receiver making his quarterback look bad most of the time they make it look good and cover up for him all those balls y'all don't throw online but that would hit him and he can't escape and down he goes well the defense knew coming into the second half here they were going to have to crank up the pass rush right they've got the lead they're going to be seeing this quarterback drop back how can you affect him you've got to win up front one-on-one and get home and they did there on third down and the pressure is coming in and they get him again in the second half trailing the way they are they know they're going to have to be able to throw the football to get back into it but you can't accomplish that if you can't keep your quarterback standing upright give the defense tons of credit getting that sack on third down they're able to put a stop to that return right at the 30 yd line here comes the Baylor offense back onto the field split backs here on the option at the 40 there he goes and he Froze that Defender thought he was going to pitch it kept it himself and turned it into a big play there's an example of the offense taking advantage of all the attention the defense is giving this outstanding running back remember he's one of the best in the game they're expecting him to get the football so the quarterback says you know what I'll just keep it no one's keying on me I'm going to get up field and find an explosive play he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions let's see what they've got on second down the the lone backs got it you know the one thing you can say about this defense they pursue the football the first guy might miss the second guy might miss but there's going to be more and more hats flying to the ball carry you saw it on that play getting the tackle for once they've got some work to do on this third and long from the 40 getting some heat and he was hit just as he was releasing the pass and it falls to the ground incomplete and the Bears will call on their punt team this will be the second time they've had to kick it away pretty solid coverage there and they'll stop him at the 26 BYU has it back the Cougar's ready to get into that play block Man David that last drive an exercise and frustration just couldn't pay it off for the score yeah and I think this defense is riding the B but don't break philosophy don't give up explosive plays this offense Jesse has to find a way to manufacture big plays and some scoring opportunities man I don't know if they're going to win David if they have to keep driving 8 10 12 plays you're right you got to find chunk plays somewhere so identify the guys that can score touchdowns and get them the ball last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and 13 he'll keep it himself good job running tough and behind his pads as he gets up to the 38 yd line and when these quarterbacks run these Zone reads read options whatever you want to call them they have to put their eyes on a certain Defender and they're reading him and basically you can't be right that's what makes it so hard to defend because if you oh it's out everybody needs a little luck and the offense just got it by Falling on that fumble so after reviewing the undisputable video evidence the replay booth has decided to overturn the call this offense hasn't found the end zone yet starting to move it's first and 10 roll roll give to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well the linebacker showing you read and react he knew exactly where that running play was going and he beat the football to the line of scrimmage and force the tfl looking for a physical attack from the gun a strong tackle and wrap up from the Junior and a lot of times you want those big plays you want those last plays but sometimes you're going to take some losses you're not going to run the football overly well but if you continue to run it you can at least create some balance you at least have the threat of it otherwise you're just going to abandon it and now it's just going to be a passing game got it in the middle it's Roberts and they make the tackle but it'll be enough for a first down and we'll see if they get another play off here in the third that's the end of the quarter and it's bayor holding the edge and as we switch ends of the field let's take a quick look at the national rankings and the Cougars will line it up on First and 10 from the shotgun the hand off to the back he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple how about the job by this defense today they knew what they were getting into a really good running back we talked to him this week it was the main focus point of this offense stopping the Run game stopping the Run game boy have they showed up and showed out and answered that challenge they finally get him stopped but what a good job by that front wall to set up the screen and create some Lan for their running back they'll throw it from the Red Zone he's got it on the Run touchdown cougar reeled it in and just made the house call they got the score they needed but this isn't over no don't call it come back yet the first part step one accomplished but this offense obviously still has work to do but the defense has to go out and get a stop and get him the ball back makes to grab in the end zone for the two-point conversion and that could be big as it draws him to within a field goal lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown drive here he comes from inside his own five nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop for that return at the 22 Baylor has it back and here comes the bear offense they still have the lead here Jesse but this would be a good time to put together a drive you're right ree you can't rest easy right now you just watch the opponent drive down the field and score a touchdown of their own so you got to answer that here your Playmakers better step up and I don't know what it is about momentum in all the locker rooms in all the years coaching everything you can't quantify you can't measured and the momentum has swung to the other side you got to get it back touch pass on the [Applause] run and he does a really nice job finding open space and making a good gain before the stop is made that's a really good job by the defense reacting to what they see they see the quarterback Flip It Forward on the touch pass now I got to go get it right Coral that football he picked up some yards yeah but you didn't give up that big explosive play and now you have to make him earn it now on the next down and the completion gives him a fresh set of downs and keeps this drive moving well this defense has given up some big plays in this game so far but they've got a lot of Talent on that side of the football someone has to step up here make a play get a stop and put their team in a position to win motion from the offense touch pass on the Jet Sweep and the defense makes the stop after a minimal gain while and on these little push passes timing is so important you're trying to snap it right as he's getting a full head of steam when he gets gets the ball he's hitting the outside and David it puts the defense in such a difficult spot you immediately have to be rotating when you see that motion so everybody's got to communicate and kind of bump over that's why going for the big play and he's got it inside the 25 and the catch and run into the end zone touchdown Baylor number 14 well he's just running straight down the field the thing you got to look at there is the velocity on the throw by the back he didn't lob it he got it to him quickly put it on his body he was able to make the catch and then run it in for a touchdown almost ready to kick it away after scoring the touchdown and it'll come out to the 25 no attempt at a [Applause] return the BYU offense headed back out to go on the attack that last drive an absolute aerial assault for the touchdown Jesse it was a nice job in play calling too David just giving the back some easy looks and reads so he could go out and and he knew exactly where to go with the football everything looked really really easy he was hot the ball was coming out of his hands the defense better do something different the playaction fake fires to the big fella there to make the tackle but the big throw is good enough to give them a first down the Cougars will hustle to the line well down two possessions good news is you get the comple bad news though did not get out of bounds you know right now saving the clock that is at a premium for this offense just what they were looking for and he's got him set up in business at the 35 with a first down well you haven't seen a lot of incompletions from this guy now in his last two games out completed over 70% of his throws last week he's doing it again in this game as a head coach you got to love the fact that your quarterback is dialed in first and goal and this feels like they're chance to give him a finish he wants to throw it again he got it and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down boy if that first down play was any indication they might walk this thing in on second and goal that's it Fly and it's incomplete he was looking to the end zone and trying to get six one of the things I love about this kid is that he goes to work he struggled his last game out completed less than 50% of his throw so back to the drawing board back to fundamentals and you can see that paying dividends in this game I know he just threw an and it's caught touchdown cougar that big score makes the end of this game very interesting no doubt the offense got what they needed more work to do but you had to get this part accomplished first and they did T on the extra point that is an efficient drive seven play 75 yds they closed it going up top for the final few inches in the score no return coming he'll call for the fair catch here comes the Baylor offense back onto the field here comes the biggest drive for the defense desperate to get a stop on the ground trying to pull the plug on this clock tackle is made at the 28 after a pick up of three well you got to give this offense a ton of credit because normally they've got the lead because of this running back today it's actually despite him they really haven't gotten the production out of him that they expect week in week out you got to give the defense credit for that but other guys on offense have been able to step up enough to make the plays necessary to give them the lead One Step WRA Two Step squeeze this junor knows how to get him on the ground well the offense dialing up the Jet Sweep and I like that idea because this receiver with his speed you want to try to get him on the perimeter put the ball in his hands and see what can happen we have arrived at the two-minute warning a onep possession game as this offense tries to hold on they'll try the Jet Sweep to pick up the first down able to work it to the 39 yd line and that'll be a first down time timeout called there by the defense desperate to get get the ball back and save as much time as [Applause] possible the Bears come to the line with a new set of downs he leaves it with the back turns it on in Midfield defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense yeah it's a break time for this defense now they got to get a stop and if that's bringing more bodies in bringing more beef in they're running the football right up the gut right at you they're not going to throw the football in this situation time to be more physical and get this big stop the receivers telling the quarterback what they see going up top on first down he's going to fire deep snags it and he will score touchdown bears and you know late in the games offenses sometimes get conservative when they got the lead and they got the ball I love this offense they were aggressive they got another score added to the lead now you're trying to Salt this game away about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown he thought about bringing that out for a half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 BYU has it back the Cougars ready to get into that Playbook that last touchdown Drive was surgical through the air Jesse it sure was and that's why this offense is so dangerous David because they can score in a hurry because of how efficient they are throwing the football and welcome to Modern college football that's what it is spread you out find my Playmakers make quick decisions and really put defenses in a difficult situation you know I feel for this offense if they're going to get back in the game I don't know if they're going to be able to do it with chunk plays they're going to have to be methodical and generate some first downs and March down the field unloads to the wide out complete in the middle and man they'll finally catch up to him but not before a big chunk of yardage is picked up the defense going to stop the clock with a timeout they want to make sure they have everybody on the same page it'll be a first down from the 49 yd line he's going to pass throws to the back pulls it in it's Davis and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yd down the field before he's finally [Music] stopped looking to pass inside the Red Zone he is stopped behind the line of scrimmage they'll lose yards on that one trying to get everybody set with the clock still running he's looking for an open man on second down got it into the end zone for a touchdown and here in the final minute they still have a chance if we had any chance to make this happen we had to score with a little bit of time on the clock now we need a miracle now now we need to kick the onside get an onside kick and somehow someway make a big play one minute left to play plenty of time if they can recover this onside kick few anxious moments there but the hands team true to its name as they make the grab and get the ball Baylor has it back and here comes the bear offense now we've got a little game pressure and we'll see how the offense responds in a three-point game Jesse I can't wait to see this quarterback and how he's going to be able to handle that pressure David how will he respond in this situation and just knowing listen I'm only up by now if I can make this a two-score game I can almost put this away in the fourth quarter quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense and the Bears enter the final minute of play trying to run out the clock on the run it's Reese they'll stop him at the 41 but he's got 10 yds and they'll move the chains it's got to be tough right now on defense you need to find a way to get a stop and you haven't been able to do that in the fourth quarter you've been given up points you just gave up a touchdown in the last drive you need a turnover you need to do something right now to stop this momentum and that's exactly what I want from my offense like listen they're out of timeouts I want this clock to take now we have seen some college coaches across college football continue to run the football and also give up the football and give a gift to the other team this one's over if I just take a knee well what [Music] [Music]
