NCAA WEEK 1, WYOMING @ ARIZONA STATE (CFB25 Prediction)

[Music] the heat of the desert is where the Sun Devils Thrive welcome to Tempe Arizona Mountain America Stadium home to the Arizona State sundevils and the rich Legacy formed by the likes of Frank Kush Jake The Snake and Pat Tillman maybe you need a little caffeine or maybe the sheer energy of this matchup with will keep you wide awake as we know anything can happen when you kick off after dark as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the Wyoming Cowboys taking on a team from the Big 12 the Arizona State sundevils for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth by David poock and Jesse Palmer and guys let's get this thing [Applause] [Music] started the Cowboys will kick it off to get us [Applause] underway and no chance at a return here they'll start this drive at their own 25 so the Arizona State sundevils offense will get the first crack at it here there he is the man a first down for the [Applause] offense wide receiver shows motion touch pass on the Jet Sweep now after that run there in pretty good shape at the 30 yd line and how about setting the tone right there like you're going to cover this guy coming across the field get it to him early on the first drive let him know this playmaker is going to be touching the ball early and often he picks up the big game after a good pick up on the run it's second down off play [Applause] action he's got the tight end and he goes out of bounds after coming up with positive yardage there it's early in the game and as offenses try to get their Rhythm these easy completions are very important because that's what helps you get your feet underneath you as an offense and as a unit and hopefully as this game goes on they'll be able to rev up and get more aggressive taking shots he breaks a tackle finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down it's a really good sign if you're on offense here you're putting it on your offensive line on third down critical down and distance opening drive of the game let those guys fire off get a hat on hat you can run the ball pick up the first you're around Midfield and all things looking pretty good here early for this offense they're going to ride this running back and he was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play this defense is going to have to do a better job slowing down the Run we've seen twice now in this opening drive this guy break one and so this defense has to do a better job at the point of attack and their d-coordinator probably is already thinking to himself do I have to get another guy in the box to slow this guy down they'll leave it with him the Sun Devils are stopped but not before getting it past the sticks I think it's really important for this offense they get this guy going early in the game and they're doing a nice job of that right now remember he's the kind of running back who gets better as the game goes on that's a really good omen for this offense considering his success now early and the sundevils are marching down the field they'll run it to the right that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point got three on first down it's second and [Applause] seven they'll run it out of the shotgun he worked that running game down to the 34 let's give him three on the carry [Music] [Applause] first the seventh play of this opening drive they'll need to move the chains on Third and short they'll try to get it through the air quick strike complete he's got enough for the first down they'll spot him at the 24 yd line and on that third and short I don't think he was unhappy to see that zone nope it's a great job by the offense hey see where the holes in the zone are sit down you only need a little bit of yards on this third down get the conversion move the sticks the sundevils come to the line with a fresh set of downs they go to the ground they pick up half of it it'll be second and five I like this guy as a running back because he can run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all [Applause] halfway there on first down it's second and [Applause] five looking for room it's scattero pushing ahead a tough run picks up four it's down at the 15 I think that was an example of the offensive coordinator trying to help out his quarterback he's trying to keep these third Downs manageable you know you throw the ball on second down and it's incomplete now you've set up third and long and now you're set up to fail they're setting the tone on this opening drive 10th play coming here on Third and short and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down this offense knew coming into this one guys how important it was to start early and on this opening drive for them they're doing a nice job running the football they're on third down they're in a position on the field now if you're on defense you got to be ready for a shot throw into the end zone and here on first down let's see if they keep it on the ground they'll try the right side and this one will be stopped for No Gain how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions going to work in the Red Zone they can pick up the first down without getting it into the end zone power football with the Run he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three L of three brings up third [Applause] down it has been all defense all the time in the early going as we W up the first quarter and the stats certainly reflect that let's see if the offenses can find a little rhythm here in the second really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal on Third and long he'll need to loosen up that arm had nowhere to go with that one had to just throw it away a wise decision to keep the field goal in play nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look they're third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion they'll send out the kicker to try to Salvage this drive it's good easy call for the refs and with that they break the seal on the scoring it's 3 nothing well this team knew coming into tonight's game they had to get momentum early playing at home they want to get the crowd into it so you get a beautiful drive here to start this thing you would have liked to cap it off with a touchdown but listen you set yourself up for a field goal did not get through the uprights you've got the lead everything right now looking good they were able to get a field go on the board and now they'll kick it away from inside the 10 here he comes he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 so Wyoming topet has the ball for the first time and how about this matchup of a couple of guys who just don't get tired and don't mind being handed the football Jessie and I love this matchup too because in modern football it's all about throwing the ball and spread and Tempo and air rate offenses let's go back to toading the Rock old school two of the best running backs in the business here and the defenses now like they know the challenge they know these guys are going to tow it they got to be physical committing guys to the Box not letting these running backs have success them after that last completion it's second down running back searching for a hole and he'll be taken down but he does have enough for the first down you got to have short area quickness that running back there doing what it takes to make sure he got that first down with the first down they'll put it in play from the 33 they're getting this guy lathered up finding a way to put that foot in the ground and get it up to the 37 Y Line nice run there on first down you know this is a running back that gets better as the game goes on so they're going to want to make sure they keep feeding him the football let him get lathered up solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six now the play fake he hurls one deep down the left side boy did he look as if he was going to go gets it down to the 37 we all love the quarterbacks with the big arms and the big throws but getting that protection set properly is so huge and I think the quarterback just had so much confidence that he was going to be picked up he didn't freak out he was so poised knowing that those Big Fellas up front they had it all taken care of dropping back it's faota receiver looks it in it's complete and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play and as a defense how scary is it having to defend this guy he's one of the fastest players in America and you saw it on that last play it's not necessarily throwing him the ball over your head they just get it to him quickly the hard part now is running and tackling that guy not easy to do and the Cowboys getting set on First and 10 the give on the inside give him about a yard on the play it's down at the 10 br going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down from the shotgun now here's an inside GI he pushes it forward all the way to the 2yd line keep pounding away at this defense and make them play the run if you can get this many a chunk they're going to have to commit more guys to the Box more guys to the run then you open it up for the passing we reached the two-minute warning and we have ourselves a ball game and they have a chance to take the lead here before the half tight quarters deep in the Red Zone but they can pick up a first down without scoring third down to the ground to try to move the chains into to the end zone he goes touchdown Wyoming and that is exactly what you want from your offense man late in the half you want to execute and then punch it in physically on the ground Take the Lead going into the half take all the momentum nice execution on the drive by that [Applause] offense lining up to tack one more onto that lead extra point and the extra point is good and it's a fourpoint lead so it's a 77 yd touchdown drive and finish to deal with the short touchdown run from the two the kickoff team out there getting set set Kick one away and they thought about a return Then thought better of it they'll bring it out to the 25 Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making its way onto the field and to settle for the Chip Shot field goal last time Jesse they'd love for this one to pay off bigger yeah it just comes down to execution too did a nice job out in the field stalled a little bit once they got down to the goal line so they just need to be a little bit more Cris Pi D yeah and listen I I think the first part was the most important part you got to put the drive together first to get down there now when we get down there focused on execution and getting six points misfire off on first down back to the air on second got his man on the right and he almost ran away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play had a really good job by the quarterback being very decisive he saw his matchup he went for it he attacked it got the positive gain I would say he's going to find that guy a few more times today it's a first down they'll stop the clock to reset the chains offense Up Tempo looking to move it through the air missed his receiver there it's incomplete is incomplete it's second didn't connect last time let's see if they throw it again on second down off the play fake pressure coming passes incomplete and they might be fortunate it wasn't knock threee for a fumble it'll be third down this quarterback really is going to have to be aware in this game of trying to find Lanes to throw and do when he's throwing over the middle of the field because this dline does a great job getting their hands in the air if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum a little screen to the running back defense was not fooled by that screen to the back and they'll stop him short of the marker it'll be fourth down one of the things I love about this defense is they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tackle to force the punt that is so well done and the Sun Devils line up to punt it away he ought to be able to use his first punt to pin him deep and the punt goes out of bounds we'll see where the officials spotted but they certainly gave him no opportunity for a return he wants to start this drive drive with a pass quick completion on the out and he goes out of bounds after a nice pick up on that way and these quarterbacks have to really trust their wide receivers and they're going to be disciplined and run to the right route when they're throwing that ball to that outside like that because those Corners are sitting there on the inside and the worst thing that could happen is to miss inside and that quarterback get going the other direction makes his connection quick timeout from the offense to save precious seconds you got to give the o line a lot of credit there because it gave the receiver time to work all the way across the field on the drag route against Zone coverage quarterback gets it to him he's able to turn it up and get a first down fires to the wide out almost had the completion just missed it just got to finish the play for the wide receiver you got to look that one in and complete it it's a bad drop after the misfire now on second down to throw It's sabota Quickly to the tight end timeout called by the offense and now they just have one remaining in the half well a nice completion there finding the tight end and what's so beautiful about that is while they didn't get the first they were able to pick up enough yards now to make the third down manageable really putting this offense in a good position got his man in the middle really good surge for this offense a move the chain and he's got it at the 34 that is going to drive this defensive coordinator a lot of DCs they focus a ton of energy on how their unit performs on third down and in the Red Zone if this defense gives up a couple more third down conversions like that they are going to be in for a very unpleasant film session on Monday looking to the big in all kinds of room to throw that one in there almost took it all the way there but it's a huge gain and they're set up with a first and goal ree you and I were talking about this before the game how is this defense going to be able to deal with all the speed they have offensively you saw them just rip off a big play and Jesse now their head's spinning just a little bit give up a big chunk play and it's right back at them and it's first down but they'll try the field goal in the closing seconds of the first half no I to give enough Body English but he missed it guys after the Miss still up by four that's just a chip shot that's just a field goal they got to make [Music] guys under a minute to play here in the first half and the offense will take a knee and that is how we'll wrap up the first half at the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin in our halftime update thanks guys looks like we've got a terrific atmosphere there in 10e and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top with that said let's send it back to the guys at Mountain America [Applause] Stadium the Sun Devils will kick it away first and we start the second half he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 he was looking for more Running Room but none to be found as he stopped at the 23 Wyoming takes over the football and the cowboy offense on its way out it's reverse that play just never had a chance they knock him down for a loss of five the sledding has been tough scores have been at a premium Jesse in every possession seems like it could switch the momentum of the game yeah re for this offense just feels like they just haven't been as physical and for this offensive coordinator David he's having to go deep into the Playbook just to try to generate a first down well and the good thing is there's not a ton of game pressure cuz the other side's not scoring either but if you can find that one thing that get that one positive play and then maybe you get those juices going and something can start to B now facing a third and long back to pass it's faota throws to the W out a strike downfield after burner's coming he's at the 10 and he takes it all the way they couldn't stop him touchdown Wyoming offense gets the job done again you want to build that cushion as we get deeper into the second half man it makes it easy doesn't it you start getting up by a couple possessions making the offense very predictable on the other side great job by the offense extending their lead [Music] [Applause] they'll try to add another to their lead the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead quick strike offense on that three playay scoring drive and they get it done with a big play a 76 Y for the score about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown and they desperately wanted to attempt to return but decided not to instead they'll take the touch back they'll try the Run he will step out of bounds but not the for the big pick up and a first down for this offense I know this is an offensive line that has a ton of Pride and they want to come out each and every game and really impose their will on the dline they got just enough push there on that run play to pick up the first and the sundevils are in the hurry [Applause] up they'll throw it on first down and he intercepts it he was looking for that big return to go with the pick but he'll set him up in business at the 36 how about that I mean they knew this defense was good defending the pass but that had more to do with who's in the secondary not necessarily who's up front David his best pollin personation picking that one off yeah baby you you don't get many opportunities to drop in coverage you don't get many balls thrown your way but when you do you want to make sure you take advantage showing off the athletic ability showing the hands the big defensive lineman comes up with the int Wyoming has the football back and here comes the offense Jesse looking to take it down the field for back-to- back touchdowns I think it's really important for them moving forward too to have a lot of balance right you want to be able to keep this defense guessing po yeah and you got me searching for answers after that last drive you stack another drive on top of this their defense's heads are going to be spinning all over the place they'll snap it from the 2 dri here on first down motion from the offense to the air on first down under pressure and down he goes at the 33 oh it's a missed opportunity you know the quarterback was excited he saw man coverage he thought he was going to have an opportunity to come up with a big play but up front and could not protect him while enough [Music] really need to pick up some yardage this time on second and long he'll try to pop the draw he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and they sniff that draw out when a draw youit you really have to sell that pass like you're going to throw the ball down the field but the defensive line the defense was not fting and you can tell they were ready for it came got on the running back got him on the ground quick fast and in I'm not positive but that first down marker might be in the next County he wants to take the top off and he'll H it in and take it to the end zone touchdown mustard in brown you know sometimes as a play caller you just don't have to overthink things I've got a guy who's faster than your guys and he's just going to run straight down the field I'm going to throw it way down the field he's going to make theat CCH and we're going to score a touchdown and that's pretty much what just happened [Applause] there lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they're on top by 18 quick work on that scoring drive just four plays and the final 34 yds covered by that touchdown pass the kickoff team out there and ready to go set to advance on the football the returner will field it and try to set up his offense in great field position and they'll get him on the ground as the offense comes out to start the next Drive okay so here comes the offense returning to the field the offense showing motion from the tight end trying to get a read on the D to the ground with the back nudges ahead for one out to the 16 BR up second [Applause] down didn't get much on first down it's second and nine they're trying to slow that Rush down with the draw may not be the most memorable play of the day but it's important as he gets them out to the 25 yd line draws are such a smart way to take advantage of fast defensive linemen that want to get up field and get after the quarterback it keeps them honest makes them realize they got to play the run too great play call third down and this offense is already in a world of trouble they could really use the conversion not to mention multiple scores the sundevils getting up for the first down well the no real mystery there and I think this coaching staff has a lot of confidence in their offensive line to get the push needed to give that back just a big enough crease to fall forward and get the first and it's so hard my room for error is so small when I'm a defensive line like I got to get off the balls fast as I can and try to get some form of penetration just stop that ball from going north south they don't do it there and they give up the first down defense in the right spot they stop him after a gain of two to the 28 that's a really good job by the defense wrapping them up getting them on the ground take away that run game make him onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by the defense picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second [Applause] down and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback the defense coming up big there and the sack is great but the secondary deserves some credit too no doubt when you can cover like that in the secondary and drop back in your Zone and only Rush a few and you feel comfortable getting home and they're going to get to the quarterback that is a great feeling and that's fun to be a defensive coordinator calling the [Applause] plays guys we have Wyoming on top as we reach the end of the quarter they built a comfortable lead after three qus of play Let's Take a look at how we got here as we start the fourth quarter it'll take a pretty sizable comeback to win this one probably the toughest call on the play sheet third and long Ball's at the 25 throwing right complete downfield and it's a first down they'll mark it at the 44 those a reason third down is called the money down what a great find by the quarterback great job finding his receiver uh at the end of the game you look at third down percentages it tells a huge story and it goes a long way in deciding who wins a football game and the sundevils come to the line in the hurry [Applause] up out of the gun the inside hand off looking for a crease the ball car by the tight end brings up second now on second down he's looking to throw unloads to the wide out and it's incomplete going for the massive explosive play instead they're looking at a third down and it's just been that kind of day for this quarterback and this offense guys they have never been able to get into a rhythm throwing the football timing's been off accuracy hasn't been great we've seen some drops just not in sync and that's why they find themselves trailing by a lot right here late in the game good quickness to grab it off the bouns good job running that route to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch you know they say football is a game of inches and on that last play that easily could have been an interception and a huge play for the defense yet somehow after the deflection the offense is able to make the catch and lookie look this drive is still going trying to find his man on first down with the catch it's scattero didn't pick up a lot there moved it Forward just a few and defensively this is exactly what you want right you got the big lead so you can play Big Zone coverages just keep the ball in front of you keep your eye on the quarterback rally to the football gang tackle and you're going to win this game right on target with that last pass now it's second and medium [Applause] back to the air one more time he spins that thing down the middle and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on well that incompletion really tells the story of this football game if you don't score touchdowns it's really hard to win games they haven't found themselves in the end zone at all in this game throwing it running it they have been completely dominated on third down going up top he's right on target he's all the way down to the 27 yd line and they are threatening QBs when you see Zone coverage man can you manipulate defense when you have a good pocket and you've got time to throw he had a little bit of time to throw you can move guys with your eyes that drag comes wide open good throw good catch first down [Music] [Applause] he's looking to throw it he's got it he that's a live ball defense falls on the ball going to be a turnover now this is a receiving group that practices making catches in traffic and they're used to having guys trying to rip it free he's got to do a better job of keeping five points of pressure after he makes the catch that's a costly [Applause] giveaway Wyoming takes over the football and the cowboy offense on its way out this has been exactly the way you draw things up David the offense has really been moving the football and it's been great execution they've done exactly what they've wanted to do build the lead now Palmer's a different animal now you got to protect them you can tell they were paying attention in practice this week in the film room because they have gone out everybody right now in the same page we reached the two-minute war and this offense will be quite content just to drain the rest of the time [Music] away 8- yd pickup on first down leaves him with second and [Applause] short they'll run the ball the clock is on their side brought to the ground but not before getting it up for the first down well the defense is on their heels right now they're going to have to find a way to stop this guy when he's got aead of steam boy he is hard to bring down [Applause] and they'll line up from the 31 on first down they'll go to the ground just a solid stop by this sophomore I never know if it's grammatically correct to say a team is being out physic difficult you hear it a lot in football though that's happening in this game they are just not getting the push they need all game long up front to have any success when you decide to run after picking up a couple at second and [Applause] eight give to the back and you want to talk about gang tackling everybody on the defense run to the Ball third down [Music] now on third down after that run they'll give it to the back that will be in the final play as the clock strikes zero here you're going to hear guys after this game say got to work harder got to be more intense you know sometimes the harder you try the worse it gets and it seemed to me that's what happened out there today yeah just never really got into a rhythm for this team there's no doubt they've got a lot of very talented players on both sides of the ball so David I don't think this is a situation where they need to now freak out and try to reinvent things on either side of the football just being in better Rhythm early and trying to find that in their next game I think would go along yeah and it's just finding a couple of those plays what what do I do really really well let's continue to build on that let's take away these negative plays let's take away these turnovers how do we create more turnover was I think that rhythm you're talking about Jesse finding of those things that I do well building on him and doing more of them so that's going to do it for us for Jesse Palmer David
