Thursday on weeks that Texas Tech football has a home game and they will be facing north Texas at the Jones on Saturday night home game number two and it's home game two of seven on the season uh if can go see Red Raider football on us we uh awoke to some Pack 12 news today we have some more Maguire thoughts we might have a Colts Guy song today who knows what we'll get into live from Twin Peaks Gus how's it going it's good dude how are you doing good uh it feels like it's been a week since we've seen each other but we just missed one day with the Rangers and it's because I tuned in for all of that Rangers game and it felt like it took a week for that beating to to be over from the time in backs yeah that was what triple wasn't it triple double Homer right out of the gate for for Bradford allowing that yeah I can't remember the uh three to zip and three hitters I think I can't remember the stat that the Rangers broadcasted said of like the the rate of home runs that he'd given up and this was like way deep into the game that that was shattered yesterday whatever that rate was that was uh one you want to forget if you are a pitcher in the majors gu no doubt he's been a and Bradford's been decent for them this year I mean in and around injuries in a way that you'd think he's he'll he'll go under Camp next spring competing for a starting job I would think kind of depends on what they uh you know how they approach this off season or whatnot but think about what we're looking at right here the three starters this weekend are what rocker rocker deg Grom and Sherer now I don't I don't know what to expect from Sherer in any way shape or form but the other two are are probably uh strong cons under strong consideration for uh 2025 rotation yeah I and for rocker it's uh it feels like it's taken a while if you're a Rangers Fan to get to this point and we always join you know the rocker lighter combo we've talked about this before with how much history they have together and pitching alongside each other and then now both being in the same franchise it seemed like for both of them there for a while that hey are we actually going to see these guys and then you saw lighter originally and he uh you know not to make a punt here but he got rocked and then came back and looked much better uh but for rocker he was then a turn okay well are you ever going to see Kumar rocker and he's done his long journey to get healthy uh and he's here and he's going to be starting tonight yeah and he I mean his stretch of uh of baseball in in Triple A you know he is coming off Tommy John but his stretch of baseball coming off of you know this injury and just here as he wraps up 2024 he has looked Dynamite at the end his double his time in double A and then tripa a and you know we knew he was going through rehab mode and all of a sudden they the the light the you know everything's clicking for him and he gets the call up and and really that's not something that we can say about lighter MH I mean the you know lighter just hadn't you know and that's not to say he never will but he just hadn't clicked like that yet and you know we'll see but I'm sure I mean the thing we know about him is he's got the he's got the juice and the stuff and the you know a lot a lot of the makeup and a lot of that kind of stuff to uh make it happen but it it hasn't yet and uh boy you know to have those two Vandy Boys in that rotation next year would be great not not because yay Vandy but more the these guys are uh you know dudes that are getting rookie pay they're with you for five or six more years cheaper arms yes and and uh you know so we we'll that that's going to be something they'll have to do is Infuse some Talent um a little bit we got Astros going right now they're trying to fend off the Rangers in this race trying to get themselves get themselves right got a text from my buddy of mine he text me a picture and he's there like oh all right how's your eff for now uh you know Ju Just real quick for Kumar rocker He he'll already be doing something that's never been done as a ranger as soon as he steps on the mound wearing number 80 oh W there nothing statistically it just he's already doing it he's breaking records his dad uh Tracy was a a good player at Auburn uh outside linebacker defensive end as I recall little bit of run in the NFL and now the defensive line coach I think U for the Titans yeah and they're going to turn him loose so that he can be there for his son's debut I'm sure that'll be a In-N-Out trip but still special stuff there one of the one of the Rangers Farm hands and S ji was part of the trade last year from the Rangers to the Cardinals I think in the Montgomery TR trade mhm so JC got his first hit in first big league RBI today with the Cardinals so it's that time of year some of these teams that are they're not mathematically out of it but we're starting to see some see some new faces your guy from Italy being chap among them you can't even pronounce his name I I can I just can't remember what it is exactly why don't you pronounce it why don't you do the spaghetti hands there need to pronounce been your stick all year long pal yes exactly you know I thought when we first started that that you were a fan of igti there for the Astros I thought we were both on the same Italian same page I'm a fan of him spicy me ball although you don't want to throw those down the plate that would be my throwing me yeah there you go oh my thank you Bren you know I wonder for the Titans if uh they cut them loose like uh CU we're only one week into the NFL right and they just lost to the Bears uh in a very painful way I wonder if they were just like man it's not work out for us who cares want don't us to go see your son play yeah we were in uh Chicago as as you know last weekend and on Sunday we went to the Cubs game and that place was packed and uh but everywhere we went there were be Bears jerseys you know once we got closer to downtown and uh that home game there and I remember talking this somebody because I was you know watching our game didn't really know the score the last time I had seen it I think it was 1716 really close talk to a guy in the hotel and he tells us the deal like yeah the Bears won didn't score an offensive touchdown scored on a you know on a block Punt and a pick six and a this and a that full pick so I don't to say it was a bad debut for Caleb Williams but he didn't light it up in his Deb they sure shared the what like First rookie quarterback making his start getting a win Stat or whatever that was everywhere and I was like did he win I didn't I wouldn't say he won but I guess it goes to his record he didn't throw any pick sixes how that [Music] the podcast that Gus and Brennan B atom Bas hanging out with you as we are live from Twin Peaks and yes UCLA is in Los Angeles thank you uh to their coach for that again they uh they barely barely beat Hawaii and this was a 16 to13 win now they are seeing uh Indiana the classic big 10 matchup Gus my mind did not comprehend that it was a big 10 match up I don't know UCLA is one of the ones that's still not bothering me by any means I've I've accepted conference realignment uh but just from I I guess realizing that it is in indeed a conference game UCLA might be the toughest one for me I don't know why they seem like the farthest from from from the uh new schools in their conference and speaking of conference realignment Gus uh if if that's your bag if if you have just salivated over the past three years worth of news today was uh maybe just like another Christmas morning for you cuz out of the blue we woke up and the Pack 12 has added four new teams and they are all Mountain West squads that being Boise State Colorado State Fresno State and San Diego State and suddenly you have all of these questions that come with it because you still need two more one we know that number wise it can't just be a six-pack conference there uh what value do they have in a meteor right uh deal now like what it what does this do about uh a college football playoff given spot I can't imagine it would do much for that because I think the the college football playoff has already told the Pack 12 on the Mountain West which this would just be you know a I don't know mutation of the two and we'll see who else gets added because now would say hey look for this team out of the American or you know this team out of the sunb belt or whatever they're not done and again numbers wise they can't be done but what what what are your thoughts on this first yeah I think the uh I mean they they've got to get to eight before that question can even happen yeah and uh so there's two more to go MH um yeah and it sure feels like I mean I it I guess time will tell as we talk about this in the coming months and years but it sounds like we're going to uh retain the power four moniker yeah if they're not really being recognized by the playoff in a way that gets them an automatic bid then that that that right there is probably the key reducer um so we know that they're out hunting for two here's an interesting thing and this decision isn't being driven by baseball they don't they only have four teams that play baseball at this point that conference has to get to six to get a be considered for an NCAA bid so if if you and I are sitting here going well they got to add two more more to get you know to get to the 12 or to get you know into whatever consideration that is on the football side they're you know if they want an automatic bid into the NCAA baseball tournament uh they got to add to with baseball and uh again it's it's not really a baseball conversation but don't you think that right now the Oregon State Beavers are over there going hey fellas make sure this is handled right yeah cuz what they they already have their baseball situation as a Powerhouse too mostly handled right cuz it was for now at least does this does this do enough just from the baseball side of things can they do enough to convince Oregon State to not do that it seems like it Ju Just in that lane only that the Beavers are fine like they they it does not affect them either way CU they have it figured out yeah I I would imagine prob be a better situation out there but they have handled yeah I would imagine that conversation starts um and who knows if how much how revealing they would be you know if if somebody very publicly asked them about it but what's their schedule looking like okay independent how how's it going right you know who who you playing and when are you playing them because once they get out there in the late March and all through April and early May that's going to get rough man that's I mean you know you you can and I'm sure they've done this they've looked around all the leagues with an odd number of teams and said okay you know here here we go here's our list to work with but some of those teams get into an odd weak situation and they may not go hey you know what we need we need to go play the Oregon State Beavers in our open week and get our AR get get it handed to him right and so and and it'll be interesting to see I mean Oregon state has and this has been an amazing part of that situation and I'll shut up about the baseball thing but they've been so they've been they've had so much success with guys from towns in Oregon and Washington and Idaho that you've never heard of and so they're probably going to retain their ability to attract those kind of players but you know if I was Nebraska or somebody that you know that maybe maybe get into the California schools you might you might be out there knocking on those doors because one thing you've got to sell is a schedule yeah sure um but this could all be a short-term situation but yeah the the big the Pack 12 needing to add to um last night was certainly big news probably the biggest news of the day in terms of just the college sports arena but then the little footnote there is that they need two more baseball teams baseball participants and that's going to be tricky I mean that that you know it makes you think that they'll be digging around and maybe some of those some of the California states MH some of those schools but not all of them play football I mean it's going to be it's going to be really a a curious situation because I can't imagine a team from way far out you could see them maybe targeting SMU or something if the ACC falls apart right right but I you know I I don't I don't know what uh I I don't know where this conversation goes for them it you know it took me a second too uh just cuz there's so much to to wave through here and it just came out of nowhere uh but I had forgotten you remember San Diego State and then going hey we're leaving we're going to the Pack 12 see you never Mountain West and then the Pack 12 going actually we're destructing uh there will be no Pack 12 to go to and then they had to be like hey Mountain West can we still come over and play and then now they're back in the Pack 12 so it ends up working out for them but they were almost in uh and and that's a a San Diego State that's a program and a lot of sports just fine they're they're doing okay especially on that level um but they were about to really mess with their situation if the Mountain West made that more complicated for them yeah San Diego State's got a uh an interesting place in all this because one thing they do have it's not this tremendous National following but they do have the San Diego market now I can guarantee you UCLA and USC run that situation and probably the Arizona schools but San Diego that is the City school all right we have uh two tickets to give over at Texas State it feels like he's going to turn into if all goes to plan there for the Bobcats uh that he's going to turn into that Jeff trailer es person right because Jeff trailer was kind of that next coach from the group of five and I know this wasn't group of five but you can go to another was like Hey look for for this for this name it felt like Matt Campbell was that uh what Latrell was there for just a minute Billy Napier was one that goes to Florida and now looks like he's not going to be at Florida by the end of the season but Jeff trailer stayed at UTSA and it always seemed like he was waiting out for either the Texas or the Texas A&M job well now you've had another round of hirings since he's been there yeah didn't get the A&M job can't help but notice he's not on the sideline for either Texas or A&M so like GJ Kenny will be interesting cuz it feels like that level of guy right now now is see like seems like that hot commodity it's always better to strike when the Iron's hot cuz the longer you wait then all of a sudden there's that next person that's like oh look out for this name uh and and maybe there's I don't know what you probably depends on your view of Houston here but like Fritz was he waited a while to go oh yeah to go power five but even then people probably roll their eyes because you go whatever like the lowest level of that power five power four is with Houston but still finally makes that jump which was still so confusing to me just from the timing of it not that you would make that jump but I I really do wonder what GJ Kenny's rise looks like and if he is at Texas State for much longer yeah you would think that he'd be a leading candidate or on on short lists at any of the Texas based M Power four schools to start with uh and we say that but he obviously didn't make the jump to uh Houston or A&M in the first round so you know and it's it's year two at Texas State uh what year three as a head coach going back to his year at Incarnate Word so you know not I guess shocking that it by any means that it didn't happened last year but it's like uh it's kind of like the the after effect of the hot seat right because you we always start like hey who's going to get fired this year before you even come in right and you like come out with all these rankings and it's like look for Dave Randa Baylor look for for Billy Napier but you have the opposite of that someone's got to fill some of those roles and there's obviously a shift in the coaching Carousel and it feels like he was building his way into being next up or towards the top of that list in this off season unless they just which I don't think they will but unless they just crumbled this year and didn't have the season that they were expecting to yeah of course you we're talking about their game tonight with Arizona State Arizona State making back-to-back trips to uh the Lone Star State that's right yeah we'll be back here next Thursday at Twin Peaks for it uh when Arizona State comes to lck how do you feel right now just give me a a percentage your confidence level that you take care of North Texas where where you at 85% yeah uh what's our last Point what's our most recent point spread last one I saw was n and a half but that doesn't mean it hasn't that's close enough yeah I'll take that yeah it's uh I mean those dudes are probably stinging a little bit from three not so great last halves of football yeah and uh you know it it it it also creates a scenario in which we think about what what's ahead for this team were they to get upset now I think if I am correct and I should look at this uh this doing this off the top of my head the last three times North Texas has come here they have left Victorious now we've gone there and kick the dog out of them and in fact on one of those and I skipped over this we got to talking about Spike the the spike dkes audio that we played earlier in the wake of uh Lloyd Hills big day beating Wyoming here in ' 92 the other one I left off was in 1998 Tech went to Irving met North Tex Tas there I guess essentially a local a home game for North Texas but played it at the Cowboys old stadium and beat the crap out of them like 30 to nothing uh did that twice around the losses in lck and I I've always wondered I mean coach dyes may have coached three or four more years had not those three home losses to North Texas took place because the you know with the support in the late 90s really started to erode around those games CU one of those games was followed by the next week Clint okay what are we going to do now just got beat by North Texas number five on the country Texas A&M's coming in and what do you do beat them you know I mean so it it uh but this this uh North Texas thing for people my age this North Texas game's got a little uh got a little sting to it I would I mean I think I mentioned this to you maybe last week but in 1988 this is Billy CH Billy Joe Tolliver senior year Tyrone Thurman Walker The Smurfs Eddie Anderson you know a pretty a pretty good name like a pretty good list of names when we go back and just think about them some guys that still you know that that fans would still remember those dudes started the year first play little bubble screen type zip screen or whatever they called it back then Wayne Walker 80 yards touchdown they would go on to lose that game Clint and go five and six on the year yeah and so really really a disappointing season and King you know right right smack in the middle of it think about 97 and 99 both of those Seasons came up a little short didn't go to bowls now there were some different reasons for that in the late 90s all of them featuring North Texas losses in love just can't happen again the podcast Raiders ra so on this day in 2015 the Texas Tech raid Red Raiders beat the UTEP miners 69- 20 Patrick Mahomes 300 yeah nice uh 361 yards for touchdowns including that touchdown pass to uh one of my probably my all-time favorite Texas Tech wide receiver Jim Grant very nice thank you Brennan uh this on the eight flooring center chat line uh Hawaii and Texas state to the pack also got a Coastal Carolina on there for the Pack 12 uh I think Ross Dinger uh I believe it was him had uh listed out he's been he's been all over this he's been one of the ones that has been all over this with like McMurphy and you know a lot of the guys now uh but had said some schools and I've seen I think three put out a list of schools to uh you know keep an eye on and one of them that I thought was interesting was Memphis got thrown out in that uh to Lane speaking and this is just outside of the Mountain West area as they would go to the other coast also seen like Cal and Stanford from a few people be thrown out which would just be hilarious in terms of yeah and that that I don't I don't think that happens by the way I don't think they're going back well we also don't know the future of the ACC if Florida State and Clemson can get out don't you think that the you know and that League starts to crumble do you think you think Ken Stanford are going to have a better option I guess I I don't think they'll go back as it stands right now cuz because the if if you're Cal and Stanford the Mark you are keeping an eye on outside of just you know what happens in your own surroundings like you said in the ACC like if if Cal or I mean uh if Clemson uh and Florida State are able to destruct the the ACC and win lawsuits and all that stuff which just seems like such a huge mountain to climb it does seem like they're closer than what they were when we started this conversation but still there's a lot of Hoops you have to go through outside of that first number they would be looking at is what like 11 million per year which is what their bargain is right now and their partial shares that they're getting being an an ACC member but not a full ACC member just yet so one can they get to that number uh and then the second thing would be yeah what you're saying is okay what does happen with the ACC but right now right now like the the ones that are just throwing it out like hey maybe they just go back like I they're just not going to back out of the ACC unless something happens well cuz now all of a sudden even though they're partial shares they're also locked in over there yeah and I I mean I'm barring some you know just uh a realization like hey this Coast to Coast travel stuff Ain ain't going to work you know like we're we're out we're not doing this I mean if if there's some Grand Moment Like That ahead you know and and we heard it and again I'm I'm using a baseball example just because that's who we talk to but when John and I did the broadcast against Stanford when they came here for the two games this spring in baseball we talked to Coach esar about it and he said we're every road trip is coast to coast I mean we jokingly said his close road trip one time they'll go to berkele in the first three years one time they'll go to Berkeley and that'll count as one of their ACC stops their closest road trip is Louisville and that's not close Clint um and and the rest of these now just down the road what are you talking about yeah some of these are they can get a non-stop flight to Boston College and Georgia Tech you know but still that's you know we're going to wait we're gonna see what's gonna happen with that right um but yeah bar and you know you could could be a situation where those two schools as academically tilted as they are go this this just doesn't make sense and you know they they step away but again I I I wouldn't forecast that unless there's some drama with the ACC and those lawsuits are underway the other ones that I love that are being thrown out are other Mountain West schools and it's only because they just pulled from the first four so like why wouldn't you go all in and get all of these schools at first like hey keep your eye on Air Force or Wyoming or you like all all of those schools I was like well now I would it gets back into the conversation is I would love to be on the fly on the wall to what these discussions were like behind closed doors and from Washington State and Oregon State I mean you were the two that were left behind anyway so you don't care how it happens it can be grimy dirty Shady however you want you're just trying to survive and try to be as established of a conference as possible and it won't be a huge win but I do think it will be a win uh if they get two schools just keeping the Pack 12 logo there no one's going to look at that and see Oregon State and Washington State and a combination of six schools from the Mountain West maybe all from the Mountain West or The American or the Sun Belt and suddenly go like is this a power five conference like you're going to know what it is yeah but there's a little more weight than if you were to have to either start over and all of a sudden hey we're the left side of the map conference yeah I wonder I mean I wonder how far how far they would diverge from the West Coast or the Mountain Time Zone you know and and may all the way into it I mean I you know at some point in a that that TV is not going to be flooded with media money are they do they want to go yeah let's take UTEP you know let's take and and and I know that's a Mountain Time Zone deal but I'm saying like how far off the geographical map do they want to go to get this thing figured out I I just don't see the Coastal Carolina well you know the ACC is doing it the big 10's doing it yeah that's not the same man this situation not the same and they're also not going to do it with an orphan team they're not going to go just take one they're not going to take one that's sitting out there on a geographical Island and by the way if we're playing what the texter's talking about if we're playing out that scenario and you're adding Hawaii okay so Coastal Carolina would be great we could have them and Hawaii you got to be kidding me travel Partners yeah and so I I don't think uh I mean I I don't know that they go really diverge geographically in a big way with without getting too partner schools cuz you're having to to do have so many different conversations in that right let's just say if you were I love the orphan school by the way or well I mean orphan geographically isolated maybe a better way to say I like orphan school more horse uh I if if you were to do that one you have to make sure that it made sense for them like let's just let's let's say it is Memphis cuz that's one that would be in that category and it wasn't anybody else coming from that from that area or that conference it was Memphis it would have to make sense for them from a money standpoint and then the Pack 12 would also be having to have these conversations with these networks like what gets us the best deal and makes the most sense financially um because it may be a slightly just a a a slightly less number if they're like hey yeah you know this is what it is if you add air force as your last team this is what it is if you add Memphis and it's enough to go H yeah we'll still go Air Force because it just makes a little more sense yeah someone someone closer in that area and I think all of that stuff that you're saying there is the same math that we talked about for the last two years just in terms of the Big 12 you know who makes the most sense financially about it way too much we' we've gone over the equations way too much guys and we don't have any answers to the equations we didn't get any better at it we just had the conversation it's it's all about the media rights and what where who has the most value it's every Red Raiders how I have used uh my wording about it and that's a lot of I don't knows CU I don't know what we have with either of those schools but I think you could go through top to bottom every team in the conference and having an I don't know what they're going to be in conference play so I open up the uh discussion to you what team do you feel like you know the best what team do you feel like you have the most confidence that you know what they're going to be in conference play talking about these among these two I mean it's at 1 through 16 anyone in the big I know about the time that it about the time that it would have been easy to bury Houston they go to Norman and almost pull the upset of the month yeah um after after just being bullied by UNLV the week before at Houston right yeah and they're they're going across town this week or risis whatever it's their their little Houston rice the battle for Houston yeah hey do you like rice as a food we just learned that Jamie just does not like rice I don't know why it's kind of a nothing food there's nothing to it you're a nothing food how dare you I mean it's it's just there's nothing to it it's a blank pallet for delicious sauces and Cajun food Gus that's what it is oh I know I get it it's like it's like pasta or something it's just it's what you it's what was to be made with it but that is a standalone just a bowl of rice I don't know that thing's kind of pasty and white it seems like it's perfect perfect for Jamie right that's what I said tasty white BL tasteless it sounds like a comfort food for him for like how he describes his menu choosing exactly like something yeah does it have any flavor at all nope okay give Jamie some of that he's just never haded on pizza right or just ketchup and rice get a bottle of Hines and just empty half of that sucker in there go to town sorry I um but yes the battle for Houston I uh yeah you're asking for sort of certainties across this league and it's it's hard right it's hard to pick one that you feel like I I feel like exactly what they're going to be I mean may I I think you have some leaders in that discussion like depending on what cam Rising is healthwise this year it feels like you know what Utah is at least being a favorite I'm not saying for sure run away with the league or anything like that it feels like you can count on state to at least be a good team from what you've seen this year um but still to nail down like yeah Kansas State's going to be a top three team in the conference I still need to see more Oklahoma State what are they going to end up being this year yeah they get they get a win in double overtime against Arkansas they pull it out but they also showed a lot of bad there and so it's like what what what is what are the Cowboys going to be this season cuz you're you're asking for just anything that could go either direction that we maybe know about a team it feels like we're we're close to knowing some things about Colorado that that could I could feel strongly about that here in uh you know another two days um cuz you're hoping we don't know anything about Texas Tech right now right cuz if we do it's not good that that we're about to turn this we're we're probably a lot like Colorado right now yeah in that we're hoping that uh this thing's about to flip we're we're hoping that we are we are all drawing on the OSU 2023 Oklahoma State team that got housed what 33 to9 or something at home in week three last year to South Alabama not just squeak by them but got kicked and then you look up two months later and they're in the Big 12 championship game two and a half months later and that that's what we're all hoping for that a that a light switch comes on and and things get right um and it's it's not going to be perfect but just be a functional football team that's what I'm after right now it's just functional oh I got you I I think the uh with the the Oklahoma State excuse me the Colorado thing feels like they're that close to I mean if something happens to shadur Sanders or Hunter yeah that's uh half the dynamic duo on that team there're I me two two guys that'll be drafted in the top 10 picks probably in the whole shooting match yeah but it feels like pretty poor line play I don't know what the you know I don't know what the what the vibe is inside the locker room there it it to me I think it would be hard to imagine that that's a really good vibe around there MH um but I don't know so may maybe that would be my one like what about any big 12 team do I feel like I know anything for sure they could come out I mean they're also very explosive in their skill guys in a way that you know that they're always going to be a scary team to play yeah sure cuz you'll have to have an answer for their two best players yeah I think in any given Saturday they could put up 50 on a team right I don't know if they could stop the other team probably going to be a shootout but just like any any given Saturday it could look like it did in Nebraska and be just just brutal where they can't protect Sho or Sanders and uh they can't run the ball and yeah and I don't know enough about their their situation in terms of a development thing like and it's I and you know I don't follow so closely that I can and tell you about Deion Sanders talking about development of linan and all because it it feels like his approach has been so fire 60 guys and bring in new ones you know in a way that you don't feel like they're preaching development you know what I mean like they're preaching like hey we got to get some linemen in here and give them two or three years and get in this thing and you know it and it it just doesn't have that Vibe and so I say all of that to say this time next year when the best two of the better players in the country are gone what is that situation like well and when they have a new coach on the sideline well I mean I know I know you've said that before and but you know what's what's the identity of the pr to me the identity of that program like I would be thinking man I want to go be a skill guy for Deion Sanders but I don't know that there I don't know that any lineman you know anybody that plays on either side in the trenches is going to be drawn to that culture and uh you know but I I mean I could be wrong and I'm not even necessarily rooting against him I just I don't know what that situation is it feels like they're on the brink of chaos you know every every week and like internal chaos I think like just to just just to wrap around the discussion cuz like the whole reason I ask that question is it does feel like you and this isn't shocking to any of us but you just have incredibly average League here in the Big 12 could be which is helpful right now with where you're at I mean that's loser mentality but it's encouraging to me yeah maybe the very top of the league hasn't run off it is Tech talk here in Double T 973 live from Twin
