begins 3 hours prior to kickoff uh of course tomorrow but the uh ream alley happening tomorrow there's a big party tonight you can just uh come get your fill out here at the Overton and uh we'll be we'll be here so you can say hi we'll be giving away a pair of tickets as well to tomorrow's game the sellout game uh against abene Christian but Gus we're we're there we finally made it to uh well I mean we're not quite to game day but we're close enough where we can we can call it being there yeah yeah it's uh it is it is time we've about checked off all the boxes that can be checked off leading up to this thing and and uh super excited you know I super excited to see all these narratives play out and I don't know that we'll walk out of the stadium tomorrow with a ton of of answered questions maybe maybe some questions regarding the explosiveness or you know about some things that e even even in against weaker opponents in the last couple years we have it busted off 80 yard runs and things like that right so maybe we'll get to flash some team speed or something that makes us feel good but uh you know other than that looking for a a clean bill of health and a w and a a chance to get ready to uh flip one of the more consequential narratives which is a road WI this time next week yeah that's uh a story for next week for sure and a road win early in the season because uh you haven't had any non-conference road wins the last two seasons youve come up short in Raleigh and came up short obviously more infamously in laramy last year but this is this is a team that I I think Gus when you look at or a lot of the the message boards our chat line look at um social media around six months ago there's a lot of people that like okay not not drinking the cool-aid not buying in the hype this time I'm going to wait and see it but now as we're here on the eve of game day it feels like there's a lot of people buying some hype on this team and maybe it's more schedule based than anything but uh it does look like this season could be set up for for some excitement yeah really you know the the front loading of the schule in a way that four the first five are at home um what what should be a winnable game and and a uh in a situation in terms of the road road games that they are really have gone to Great Lengths to address that that's the key thing is it'd be different I think maybe we'd all sit here and think well what's the different maybe we got a little bit better players and stuff what do they changing about the road narrative yeah and and some interesting comments last night about it course we've been hearing some different things through camp but you know coach Maguire on his his uh show talked a lot about it as well but just all the things that they're doing to address Road games and uh and getting off to a good start on the road as you talked about you know just they've been uh you know really beset the last couple years by not being able to go on the road put together a good performance early in the year and so a lot of attention being given to that and so this time next week you know we'll be hopefully one and0 and that's that dominates the conversation and uh something we can all be excited about but that's uh yeah it's finally here man I mean I'm I'm just you know tickled pink I I I love the fact that it's not 102 and I'm all for some rain would would prefer no lightning to get all to get on the high school games tonight but it looks like that's going to you know possibly happen out here and I hate that but uh you would be I'd rather it be 102 and dry and do that but you know we get to Sunday it can rain all day Sunday and Monday we're good let's get get us get us through a good tailgating day and a good concert and and a w tomorrow night are you dropping into that concert yeah I probably will cuz we we set up Brooks sets up his crew over there at the tailgate so we're just we're kind of just walking distance over there so yeah we'll do that how many of the girls in my family are excited for that I guess there's a couple my wife uh informed me there's a couple more songs than I realized I like I knew the unwritten one but there's like two or three in the catalog I'm like okay I knew that one yeah and I yeah and I remembered Unwritten and I know she had a couple other decent I I would call them hits or whatever but um you know like you said maybe maybe songs that we've heard of is a better way to say it but I think the so I you know I'm I'm I'm usually interested in that you know get a you get one of these cups right here and fill it with a couple of Beverages and walk over there and take in the scene and uh everybody sounds good when you feel it with well yeah that's true been had enough yeah um enough of those but I think the uh you know it's it's I think she had a song I think Unwritten was part of one of the movie soundtracks this summer okay what was your girl Sydney Sweeney what was her she was in the movie with the guy with the yep anyone but you you were a little too quick on that Kyler I went to go see the theat I'm sorry I went to go see the theaters it was a good movie he lit up with the woman right he lit up when I talk about it the dude with the ABS he could have jumped right on that that a boy yeah I mean you know n that's right he's good-looking man right so Sweeney she's all right too but yeah that I think I think Unwritten was part of that scene and so I think it has renewed Natasha betting field for a younger generation okay yeah how about that so you got that I didn't even know that for the opening uh act how many of these have you been to uh these concerts I'd have to see a list been the last few years right I'd probably go to two out of three of them okay that's yeah that's the third you get bowling for SUP in you know what I don't know I feel like I missed that and I can't give I think it was I think that was an 11 a.m. kickoff and that's maybe I can't give you an explan I have no recall of that one cuz I I can almost go back and retrace them by what I have on my phone like hey here's here's Atomic Dog here's here's you know here's Shaq here's whatever and I don't I don't have any recollection of Bowling For Soup and I don't you know so I don't know if I just didn't go over there or what maybe I did just didn't record anything hey we are here at the into got the fire roasted elote dip yeah you you into that sort of thing yeah absolutely I would yeah 100% that's that sounds pretty good been I hav been nothing but impressed by the food here over the last couple years it like like pleasant surprise after pleasant surprise yeah it's like higher end food oh absolutely con Grill is yeah and it doesn't mean you need to be in a coat and tie to eat it either I'm just saying like it's the stuff's really good yeah yeah and then they've got the the more simple stuff that's still fantastic fried pickles and you bet Philly cheese steak sandwich so all sorts of uh eats for you if you come out to the Overton at reham alley you got plenty of opportunity I even heard mention of chicken frying Lobster yeah chicken fried Lobster fascinating yeah I'd be happy to eat some of that and give a report but I like I like chicken fry and I like lobster so those two seem you know I don't know why I there be any problem why not sounds like an explosion of flavor to me yes yes all right so uh to the Yates flooring center chat line uh a few different people I know you guys talked about this some and I think you played the comments some yesterday uh the people are asking are we going to talk about a quarterback prior quarterback lying about our city and everything this program and fan base gave him even when he came up short it's interesting to see our past quarterback having an unforced error we noted him doing a lot on the field I do think that was an interesting part of it is when I when I was on a 30 minute show yesterday I had just seen it written I'm like okay right I'm like H well let's let's see if we can get any context on it just to understand if it was asking for a joke or anything like that it's way worse when I you actually hear the comments cuz yeah it didn't sound like the the Louisville radio host was fishing for a shot at lck it wasn't anything it was completely um unprompted and Tyler Shu I think because maybe he got some backlash on Twitter from some fans out there or I I don't or because maybe he was going to lose his starting job here if he stayed another year um or he wasn't welcome to stay another year whatever whatever it may be um I think Tyler shuck gets his pantings in a wad quite a bit and I mean we've seen that from different stops that he's been at he but this one was was the wrong way to go about it you got plenty of guys who have stepped on to other campuses and still talked highly about their time at Texas Tech like Henry columi um like Davis web's a prime example not Henry colum's father but Henry no Henry Henry himself yeah he's he's come back and and been welcomed by tech fans and and yeah Davis Webb is probably the best example of it but now Tyler shuck with one stupid little radio interview has uh turned people out west in West Texas enemies up on yeah it kind of unnecessary and uncalled for and uh don't you know I don't I mean I guess it was just him going for a going for a little laugh or something but I mean that that's Clint Clint when I he and I talked about it yesterday he he this week earlier this week had done a uh you know at 4:45 had done a little thing on uh things that it was it it was basically things that star aied I'm not quite getting it right but yeah starting argument whatever it was and I and I one of the things was like yeah start talking about somebody's Hometown I mean if I come up to you go hey doomis is a blah blah blah you know like and you're coming at fight yeah I mean especially if you're coming at it from a place that's not like Hey we're buddies we're joking around you know like but like dude just I mean like that'll like the hair will stand up you know on your on your neck if it's depending on where it's coming from and and like Tyler shuck left here with nothing but good vibes from everybody and so wish you the best for Louisville for you great what the hell man moved on to our next quarterback that's that's all great but here the the catch is you know I I think when you look at something you don't talk about at someone's Hometown but also who's the most proud people out there when it comes to where you're from it's Texans and then you group it into a region there's no one more proud than West Texans of being where you're from you you don't tread on us it's it's pretty simple and yeah Tyler Shu has uh has gotten a few hundred, enemies now or that will be rooting against him in Louisville and he and and I think the the biggest problem there and we're not going to spend all show on Tyler shock because again you guys spent time on it yesterday but the biggest problem uh to me is the inaccuracy of his statements like you're making it seem like it's a desert here you're making it seem like there's absolutely nothing how often do you actually smell cow crap here right maybe two days a year when the winds going a certain direction when the winds coming out of the South maybe I mean we're not Herford Texas it's not it's not that you you literally don't smell it here um and then the other part there's nowhere to eat well someone should have brought him to the Overton once or twice when he was here which is not true you go back and look at his comments from 200 21 when he got here from Oregon he's like oh I was surp pleasantly surprised and how many good options there were here to eat and it it's just the whole thing that's what frustrates me is that he's he's just trying to show off right he's trying to show off for someone that he doesn't need to show off for well he's got the starting job there what are you doing right and if you're just if your MO is the only thing that you can think of to say on a move like that I mean it's it's as it it could be as comment as as he wants it to be just to go oh yeah you know great place blah blah blah you know and and just move on through the comment you know it's like like you said the dude wasn't leading him to it yeah he he would you know and so he drops that line and like hey bro you're probably not welcome back around here I'm leaving this thing I'm leaving here at 5:30 this this table with you and me as you said we're signing off I'm going over here to a letter winners a Double T VAR City Club deal letter winners deal in the South End Zone so we can you know like yeah former athletes go see the deal down there what's that like what's that like in three years I mean it probably means he's never coming back right absolutely it is but but you know I mean like it shouldn't have to be that way I mean you in a bunch again like I think that he so something went South where he probably said I have no idea have no conversation but there's a chance that he's like oh I want to come back for another year like well we're kind of moving on to another guy here we need to you've been hurt really early in the season three years in a row but we'll wish you the best we'll sign off on you going wherever you good one um let's see Dumis is perhaps an exception to the west Texas Pride okay taking shots dang it's fine whatever whatever I'm not mad um Gus who's the uh the most overrated team in the Big 12 right now going into the season now four of them F four four of them have played one plays tonight so we've seen four a sample all of them against FCS opponents to this point but to you who's the most overrated team and who's the team that we're not talking about enough yeah maybe I mean and of course we're doing this with uh I mean we're having this conversation with no real inventory other than four games last night and everything last night pretty much went to script but uh um our uh I you know maybe I it it feels like maybe that's TCU I don't know but they've kind of been picked middle third with us let's let's do this maybe it's because they've been picked so high and they did nothing to defy that but um how about maybe Kansas and I'm always saying that just because of the health of the quarterback like is this dude staying healthy this year because so much of that situation runs through him and and I say that as I just read a text from Brett McMurphy that the North Carolina quarterback just had surgery on his leg and he's going to miss the season he got knocked out last night so I mean it's it's already happening and that's just part of it but you know and I'm I'm I just don't know what Kansas is without him I think it's when we look at at the quarterback situations across the country um what what's the number now when you say injuries for more than a game it's got to be over a third of the quarterbacks out there right oh yeah the guys are missing more than a game more than a game that's a good way to say it there's probably half that are missing like meaningful snaps yeah meaningful snaps um it it it happens it's it's the game of football nowadays whatever reason it's just like baseball yeah it is seems like yeah everybody gets hurt in baseball pitchers get hurt in baseball it's it's your right of passage football it just happens and you have to be ready for it you it's just is it your turn or not and unfortunately for Texas Tech it's been your turn over and over and over again and maybe this is your lucky year maybe um hopefully it is Baron Morton saying this is the best he's felt since high school hopefully that's that that holds true for a long time but you're right Jaylen Daniels uh is as injury-prone or more injury prone than any other quarterback in the Big 12 Conference now that Tyler shuck has left and I mean seriously but they they don't seem to be getting knocked down for that at all yeah and you know wonder I don't know enough about his situation I remember hearing whispers last fall and again these are just Whispers and stuff but you know folks acting like hey he was cleared to play you know like he could have played at the end last year and again I don't know what's true uh so is there the tiniest little shred of a doubt about his toughness I I don't know that um you know cam Rising is another one that's got a big injury history that it feels like a lot of that team's running through him and and you know anything less than first place and we could say they were overrated they could still be really good and not win the conference and I guess by sure a technicality we could say they're overrated but you know and they they did nothing but impressed last night and I think they're the kind of team that might be built for a backup quarterback because it sounds like their line play is really good and they're built around toughness and you know and and solid defense and all that of course last night they smoked Southern Utah or whoever it was right right so yeah I don't I don't know I don't know who is the most overrated team in this league there's quite a few that are getting hyped up and talked about Utah is the one that gets talked about the most out of anybody they're probably the the biggest darling pick to win the league um who's the most underrated who who needs to be talked about more we can answer this on the other side because we're about to be I hope it's Texas Tech how's that I mean and we're not picked in a bad spot but I hope middle of the pack is is uh not where we finish I mean ninth in the league is where you're picked but again the separation between Ninth Place and third place maybe a game or two we've talked a lot about holding serve would be a eight and4 type season you know yeah I mean and that's that's just kind of sports talk stuff what you do and 8 and4 would be our best season since 09 you know so much of the pathway to 8 and four involves a three and0 non-conference record I think eight and four is something you're happy about it's acceptable but also feels thought I'm not drinking the drinking the Kool-Aid for this season and then now we're close to the season it feels like a whole lot of people are predicting 8 and four 9 and 3 Kool tasting a little better KO tasting a little better are you drinking the Kool-Aid for this season so I always drink it are you kidding me I'm the play by play guy I got to drink it no I mean reality is you look at the everybody except the the teams that played in week zero right and last night um are I mean you're undefeated of course and you're healthy and you're healthy healthy yeah so heck yeah Now's the Time to drink it yeah it it is the time to drink don't try to drink it later if you know it's too late you didn't jump on the bandwagon early yeah I just learned the term drink in the Kool-Aid last week and I forgot I was where you hidden under You' been drinking Kool-Aid he's only I mean I learned where it originated from it's his birthday today he's 34 old years old about that birthday you and I are old enough to know that origin story there for the I don't even remember 34 I'm I'm getting up there so I was just talking about 1990 1990 yeah that's what I was yeah so uh Brian what's I guess obviously outside of of the the wins and losses and drinking the Kool-Aid what element of uh this particular year are you most excited about was this season 25 for you 25th wow S silver anniversary wow um I I'm really looking forward to you know just all the changes that have happened and I'm not just talking about tech I'm talking about the big 12 I'm talking about the playoff situation um obviously what's happened with n IL and and everything else it's just uh it it's completely changed everything that we think about we talk about um and and what the expectations are when you go into a season sure so now the expectations are you're going to have some new experiences there's no doubt about that looking forward to that right you know you're going to have a new look new feel I'm waiting for that that's going to be cool right and then different teams um a different team in your own team so it's just you know it's all exciting I think this is one of the most exciting pre-seasons that I can remember because of all of that change yeah I I think so I mean you you and that's not the Kool-Aid no that's not but it still gets you all excited it sets you up for the Kool-Aid abely it sure does yeah I I think that that you're exactly right I mean all of the changes the Adidas the new stadium four new teams to the league getting rid of the the stodgy Longhorns and Sooners who th those people uh it's it's it's different so I think everybody likes the the new feel not everybody but I'm I'm sure a lot of people like the new feel uh going into this season so um what about on the field what what are you anticipating in in this year year number three under Joey Maguire well I'm really looking forward to uh what I I anticipate is going to be a real uptick in the offensive performance and and I think you're going to see there's just so much improvement in the skill areas I think so much and everybody's been talking about this so much improvement in um so many areas on offense if if the area that everyone's concerned about you guys have probably talked about it once or twice yeah uh comes through even even couple times even 60% yeah then this offense ought to be fantastic okay and if that's the case then we've been through Seasons thank you we've been through Seasons where you had awesome offense yeah and if you just had a little bit of Defense you'd have been talking about things that we haven't talked about around here so if this offense can be those kinds of offenses with a defense that you're expecting that's going to be certainly better than what they were back in those days right and you're in a conference now that we had just talked about your opportunity is is out there we're playing at a conference now where we've all got a similar salary cap if you will I mean and there's no Goliath out there in terms of Texas and OU and A&M and so why not become the Goliath yes absolutely I I think that's kind of got to be the approach for Texas Tech and maybe a couple other schools uh where you you look at and say this why not us why not us this is this is your time to take over um and and hopefully you can it because I I can't remember and maybe you can attest to this better you've been doing this 25 years I can't remember a schedule that I looked at and say that's about as favorable as you've had yeah that's that's kind of the you don't want to count the chickens well because you know what uh it looked pretty favorable I don't even want to say this it looked pretty favorable going up to Wyoming last year too it it did feel so be careful there okay I agree with you I agree with you I think on paper and it's that old cliche sure sure um but yeah you look at the schedule and what you expect out of everybody in the schedule and it certainly appears to be favorable yeah but you still got to you still got to do what you got to do and you can't be thinking about that and we've all spent so much time talking about keeping Baron Morton healthy and that I I'm I'll be fine if we can keep Jacob Rodriguez healthy and not that not that he's been any sort of injury prone but I think about Wyoming and it's hard to separate that game from the fact that he got rolled up and missed you know all but four games and thank goodness he only played four games so we'll have two more years of him but they were a different defense when he was on the field true whole lot of it this evening as many of these teams kicking off the season Eric Ward got his first win of the Year yes he did as uh first win of I guess his career I should say as Eric and uh estado matadors won 14 to7 in their opener last night that sound like they slugged one out there yeah yeah that's good hey W's are W's and bet especially first game oh yeah getting that one out of the way is important I I'm not sure that the narrative coming out of my mouth is would be any different if we're talking about estado yeah or this Tech game tomorrow or the First Tech basketball game or the First Tech baseball you know it's always a situation where like you wonder what's going on individually with people yeah you know you hope there's enough veteran leadership and nothing nothing fluky that goes on and you go out and just play better than your opponent but that first home game and those first early sequences can sometimes be telling if you get you know one guy trying to impress teammates or just you know guys not really settling in and playing within themselves and all of a sudden you got a dog fight on your hand and uh you know hopefully there's none of that but I again I that narrative for me carries from the the home opener for for pick your sport and probably even pick your level high school college is why no different yeah so come join us at the Overton Hotel and the 30 before he Sprints out of bounds a g of 39 on the opening play of the drive got a 10- nothing lead and Tosh Brooks back on the field man it is so hard to bring him down Brooks inside the 30 they finally get to with the 20 wow what a run 15 yds there's nowhere to go I mean it stopped in the middle nowhere to go but Taj Brooks just continues to fight through contact the contact balance off the charts tomorrow be Begins the Quest for Taj Brooks as he looks to break the alltime rushing record in Texas Tech History he needs 1,167 yards and I for one cannot wait to watch this season I like the sound of that go to Taj time.com and you can follow that yep I uh they are all in on breaking this they've talked about it um there is in my mind no reason that it won't happen sans's uh injury and I'm not trying to speak anything obviously uh knocking on any sort of wood we got but with 12 games that is less than 100 yards a game uh he raged that that marker several times almost every single game last year was it one short I think I think after the first three games there may have been one game where he had 98 yards everything else was well over 100 yards um so I don't I don't really have much question that this is going to happen if he's able to stay healthy uh but I still believe that you're going to see a a different approach where I think he finished with what 270 something carries last year I don't have it in front of me relatively High Lads it's one of the highest in in college football last year I think that number needs to come down to around 200 and you can still do it if you are the balanced offense that we're talking about with all the weapons that we've talked about I mean a a full tight end room more explosive receivers uh you know two quarterbacks and I say the two quarterback thing in the sense that we're back to what we we had as sort of a luxury you know the last or the previous couple years where hey it's third and one Here Comes This QB run specialist to come in and and do QB run games so there kind of a lot of moues to feed but U you got to believe that Taj is at the uh the top of the list and hopefully this record goes hand inand with offensive success and it makes total sense that it would be but that his pursuit of this hey it's another 100 yard win and another win 100 yard 100 yards gained and another win for the Red Raiders there were times last year where you're far too predictable though and and as good as Taj Brooks is when you have guys like uh sweat at Texas and and guys that are NFL caliber guys stacked up along with seven other guys in the Box you you're not going to be able to move the ball like you need to and Y and and there were some underperformance across the board probably in that receiver room I don't think there's any question to that and and uh just you know things things never clear part of it you know playing with two quarterbacks and one that was playing hurt and just all the things and so the there was so much about that that you know how much different would we feel if that six and six is A8 and four and it's or at least you know a seven and five right if you win the Wyoming Game you're seven and five just how much difference you take care of BYU you know like those those are not hurt there yeah yes it feels a lot different there's no question and and uh you know but sometimes uh sometimes coming up short on something you know and in that aspect with a lot of guys coming back can create a sort of edge that'll set you up for something really special I I can think back to 1988 and these were the years that I was on campus playing baseball but was before I was born I know I understand the uh had to the perfect happy birthday by the way we talked about that earlier we got the old choicer turning 34 yep but our in 1988 it was a team it's it's Tyrone Thurman's last year it's Wayne Walker's last year Billy Joe tolliver's last year and all of these dudes in 1986 had gone to the first bowl game in nine years and done some things and then you know they they come up a game short they basically tie a game they should have won 64 and one no bowl game in 87 and then a five and six year in 88 that's kind of a mess and it's all those guys last year most notably starting with a loss here to North Texas yep the group that came back mostly senior offensive lineman and a running back the next year peel off a nine and three and it's one one of the teams that we really talk about not a top three or four team in school history but probably a top sure top 10 team in school history and
