We Know the Way to San Jose heart of the Silicon Valley and home to the San Jose State Spartans and anticipation has been high all week for this one we believe we've got a great one in store today and we've got a team that makes it into the top 25 now when you go on the road that's when you prove you belong [Music] [Applause] kickoff team has the ball teed up and they about ready to go he'll bring it out it's Collins not nearly as much as he' hoped when he brought it out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 so the San Jose State Spartans Return Man hard helped out the offense with that one sometimes you sense that what the kids call Swagger is a false bravado this dude is nothing but real a wide receiver yeah he's got that speed and it just you see DBS they're probably watching him come on the field right now and they understand it's going to be a long game this guy can go get it he can run he can do a little bit of everything at the wide receiver spot didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 they try to pop a run on the draw and he's stopped by that big defensive tackle up front well they triy to go with draw they didn't catch the defense blitzing so it wasn't a great look anyway but up front they just got beat regardless and that back David had nowhere to go he had nowhere to go but those offensive linemen you got a set and you got to invite those defensive linemen up the field and kind of push them by and and you could tell they didn't do that they didn't create any holes there was really nowhere for him to go you got to give him that first little hole then maybe he can make a move so the offensive line needs to do a better job and he gets it up to the 36 it'll be a first down this guy just gives you nightmares I mean he's just got so much electricity he just pulls it down and chews up yards like it's nothing that's a quarterback a quarterback doing that to your defense the Spartans headed quickly to the line running back searching for a hole you want to make sure to maximize those types of runs and he gets it out to the 41 I like this guy as a running back because he could run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all halfway there on first down it's second and five wide receiver shows motion headed for the corner on the Jet Sweep really nice stop there from this senior leader I love defenses that can gang tackle how about the defense getting a lot of hats to the football that receiver's a fast dude but this defense they've got a lot of teams speed themselves and they showed it right there third and short from the 44 and we might know if they plan to go for it on fourth down by what they call here they'll try to pick it up on the ground they tried to go Smashmouth on Third and short and it did not work against this defense stopping the run is about physicality it's about I'm bigger than you I'm stronger than you up front really nice job by the defense showing their strength bowing up stuffing the run and the Spartans will punt this one away getting our first look of the afternoon at the punter looking for a block it's Harrington couldn't get away from that cover team and they've got him down 23 as we take a look at our impact players for this one what are you looking for Jesse for a guy to make an impact well these are simply put the leaders of this football team and generally games go how these guys play if they make plays they've got a shot to win this one no doubt they got to show up the these are the team leaders these guys have to play well if they're going to win the football G getting that push they pick up a four out to the 26 that's a really nice play it's impressive runs first down in the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little priest for your running back solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six from the gun running back gets to give fights off the defender runs ahead and Powers his way for four yds out to the 30 and you know when we talk about great third down defenses it really he starts with them getting stops on first and second down you've got to get those stops early in the drives to set up third and long so that's a missed opportunity on that second down by this defense this is where you make the money on the drive ball at the 30 it's third and short able to work it to the 39 yd line and that'll be a first down and you know big chunks like this don't happen unless you commit to the Run game you got to get those big boys up front into the game understanding I want to knock people off the football create some holes like you do here for my running back make the game easy they'll snap it from the 30 nine first and 10 out of the gun the give to the back they can rely on this guy to pick up solid yardage when they need it and he's out to the 43 I know the passing game sells and the passing game is exciting but it's not exciting to get five or six yards a pop on the ground but it will be very successful halfway there on first down it's second and five he's looking to throw and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the turf doesn't take this defense a lot of time to get to the quarterback man they've got speed all over the place they hit him so quickly and because of that the ball Falls incomplete as they come to the line on Third and short from the 43 I wonder if they already know they'll go for it if they don't make it here from the gun wants to pass quickly complete gets it all the way down to the 39 yd line it'll be a first down there's a reason third down has called the money down what a great find by the quarterback great job finding his receiver uh at the end of the game you look at third down percentages it tells a huge story and it goes a long way in deciding who wins a football game it's been a defensive battle through the first period and the stats tell that Tale [Applause] well based on that we can hope to see a little more offensive explosion here in the second quarter as we get ready to get things started looking for a physical attack from the gun and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up first down you know you always want to establish the running game how about this offense nothing fancy run the football be physical get a big game now on the move at the 28 yd line on first down they'll put the tight end in motion pulls it fires to the left and they pick up just a few on that completion and offenses nowadays they're really just counting numbers how many guys do you have out wide how many guys do I have out wide if I have enough guys to block your guys boom it's just built into the offense pitch catch let me get a few yards after trying the running game let's see if they do it again on second down trying play action just too much heat that time and they knock him down at the 31 often times with play action you're asking the quarterback to hold on the ball a bit longer and you're asking this offensive line to hold up and pass throw a bit longer against this athletic front seven on defense it's going to be tough and this offense has gotten off to a good start on third down but this is a different deal on Third and long looking downfield and he needs a bunch coming after him and the pressure is coming in and they get him again well quarterback back went down behind Center pretty quick that time and it makes you wonder as a play caller against this pass rush do you start thinking about maybe rolling your quarterback out and changing the launch point it's fourth down and they'll try the field goal looks as if this will be a 51 yd attempt it is good and that'll put the first points of the game on the board it's three to nothing how nice is it as a head coach to have a kicker like this it makes these decisions on fourth down so much easier just trut them out there and let him stroke it through the upright [Applause] so they were able to put up a three spot on that last drive and now the kickoff team out there as they prepare to put boot to leather the returner will field it and try to set up his offense in great field position really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 they'll go to the ground he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple they're trying to run the football there's just nowhere to go for the ball carrier inside he tried to bounce it to the outside that linebacker way too fast he met him there and forced the tfl after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 they'll ride the running back and leave it with him he believe in that running game got six before he stopped at the 23 keep pounding away at this defense and make them play the run if you can get this many a chunk they're going to have to commit more guys to the Box more guys to the run then you open it up for the passing game a third down try for the offense Brown will throw it just threw that one away to avoid disaster offenses know and work on it all week third Downs third Downs we got to be really really good this offense not good on this third down it could come back to bite him the Spartans will punt it away on fourth down this will be the second time they've had to kick it away surprisingly makes a fair catch just outside the 40 yd line first down here with time for maybe one more play until the two-minute warning Ed the play fake now to throw fires to the wide out all kinds of room to throw that one in there they're ripping off chunks of yardage they get it to the 33 fresh set of downs after the completion going up top on first down fires to the big fella they get him down after he makes the catch look you can't take away everything right so you give them that and rally and make a solid tackle yeah and a lot of times in zone coverage I like when I can get all the eyes on the quarterback I like when I can see the routes and see him develop in the middle and you could tell they had keys on the tight end he wasn't going anywhere after he caught that football he finds his man and a good job of coverage by that defense just a short pick up it's a nice job running the end route there by the receiver and the best thing he did after he made his break he didn't Trail and fade away he actually attacked the football that's a good lesson for young receivers out there watching Ball's at the 26 it's third and short and they' love to pick up the first down and avoid settling for the field goal makes the grab on the left and they reacted well to the completion but it was too late to keep them from getting the first down really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done they'll immediately call timeout inside a minute to play here in the first half might we get a touchdown before the break after all looking to move it through the air he wants it all and he was trying to cash in In The End Zone in this Red Zone threat but it's incomplete second well even though that was an incompletion I wouldn't be surprised if this secondary wants to start playing deeper coverages cuz this offense has shown that they're willing to be aggressive they've got a lot of speed this defense cannot allow any big play here in the second half on second down he'll try to make the connection fires to the end zone had it in his hands for the score and let it fall to the turf it'll be third down oh and the offense just not able to come up with that you knew that was going to be a bang bang play right they're taking a shot into the end zone that's going to have to me a contested catch on the back end but he wasn't able to come up with it because of the hit from the gun the ground game and the defense holds firm no pickup at all on that play we've got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll try to get more points on the board before the break now on fourth down they'll try to come away with three and he's already made one the holder will put it down at the 26 for a 36 yd try just drives it between the uprights [Applause] [Music] so they put the field goal on the board and about to kick it away and hoping that'll be the final points of this first half he'll start the return inside his five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 San Jose state has the ball and ready to go on the attack this lead in the half you're behind you'd love to create something before the break to build momentum Jesse but you've also had some miscues on offense a big part of why you're losing the game right now i' take it into halftime make my adjustments and come out ready in the second half yeah I'm going to take it into halftime too Paul but I'm trying to put some points up right here be aggressive set the tone be like Hey listen this is what you're going to get in the second half so find something really quickly you can go to well you're making a positive out of a negative and that time quarterback nice job buying time he's trying to throw the football downfield nothing there so instead of throwing it away getting the incomplete just get what you can get and make this next down Bo management line getting set on second [Applause] down Brown wants to pass and he'll make the grab along the sideline but he's not able to get to the first down marker well we knew coming into this game this offense was going to try and get this receiver involved and get him involved early so here they are just finding an easy completion it's not a touchdown but they just want to get this guy lathered up and get him into a room running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the [Applause] break couldn't find a man and just had to throw it away to avoid a negative play well the quarterback in his intended target just simply didn't have the timing there the ball Falls incomplete on third Now setting up fourth down and the Spartans decide to punt it away on to kick it [Applause] away he'll call for the fair catch here they'll come out and take a knee and that should send us to halftime no tricks here looks as if they'll just run it out and take that lead into halftime first half in the book it's time now to join Kevin Connor in our halftime update guys who's had a better seat there in San Jose than you have a captivating game so far and I get it a lot of coaches will say the difference between winning and losing comes down to stopping big plays and getting big plays but if you ask me it's more about how good you are on third down and how efficient you are in keeping drives alive those two stats can help you break the will of even the best defenses and help you come out on top and with that let's send it back to the guys at Seth Q Stadium the Spartans will kick it away to crank up the second half from him inside the 10 here he comes finds just enough space AC cross the 25 let's mark it at the 27 yd line first play of this drive comes from the 27 coming out on first down with the play fake ball in the air intercepted and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception that's why you love veterans in this defense they stay locked in on their rules and he made the pick the San Jose State offense is back on the field and in a lowc scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful hmer now use it against yeah David I think for a play caller this is tough right it's like you have to have the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend from the gun they'll try to impose their will there to stop him after a pick up of one to the 22 22 y third and short from the 22 is the field goal unit getting ready or is this already four down territory Brown will throw it got his man quickly and he'll be taken down but he does have enough for the first down well look that wasn't a touchdown but that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression they go to the ground able to get one down to the [Applause] 15 didn't get much on first down it's second and nine give to the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long try to convert through the air got it and he's into the end zone go touchdown Spartan and what did I start for this offense the throw game getting working getting the touchdown pass this quarterback getting a little bit of confidence this passing game getting in the Rhythm nice start for this offense [Music] ready to try the point after is on for the extra point and the extra point puts them on top by one so that scoring Drive took only six plays and they finish it up with a 15yd scoring toss lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown Drive and he takes this from inside the five just never had a chance to shake loose and he'll be brought down at the 24 they'll get things started on this drive from the 24 off the play fake on first down to throw unloads to the wide out and they won't make the connection going for the big play another incompletion and I've said that a lot and these teams are just struggling I mean the offense just doesn't know what to do nothing's working ground game Throw game it's kind of been a rock fight on both sides couldn't connect on first down now second and 10 from the 24 after the incompletion back to the passing game grabbed over the middle it's Booker they make the stop after the catch and still some work to do to pick up that first down well this offense knew coming into this game they wanted to try to attack the middle of the field in the passing game and they're able to execute the end route there line is set on third down they'll try to get the first through the air finds a tight end and he's got enough for the first down it'll be at the 35 they get the conversion there he used his size and nice moves to get past the chain and I like that third and short find the big fella the soft hands make a quick little move make the completion get the first down they'll snap it on first down from the 35 used the play fake now to throw caught over the middle it's Booker and the explosive play and they're on the move all the way to the 44 I tell you what that's great execution between the QB and receiver they look like they could execute that throw in their sleep quarterback took a steps threw it on time great route by the receiver nice job securing the catch that completion delivers a first down wide receiver coming across in motion to the air on first down fires into traffic it's picked off and he's brought down and this defense gets the ball back for it's and that's just excellent cover big cover one nowhere to throw the football look at everybody playing man across the board and you still got the safety in the middle of the field nobody open and if I'm the QB man I don't need to force it I I Don't Force It In The Tight Windows if it's not there he throws it unfortunately gets the interception bad decision by the QB there guys this San Jose State offense trying to get this ball moving the sledding has been tough scores have been at a premium Jesse in every possession seems like it could switch the momentum of the game yeah re for this offense just feels like they just haven't been as physical for this offensive coordinator David he's having to go deep into the Playbook just to try to generate a first down well and the good thing is there's not a ton of game pressure cuz the other side's not scoring either but if you can find that one thing that get that one positive play and then maybe you get those juices going and something can start to build quarterback Quick Pass to the receiver creating some space getting just enough good blocking and they've got it up to the 47 yd line and these little touch passes man they're just the easiest completions ever for quarterbacks Palmer I bet you would have loved been able just Flip It Forward that counts as to your completion percentage which is good and then it's all run after the catch so pretty easy for a QB you wouldn't have been the only All-American in this booth David if I were allowed to put have Push passes when I was playing quarterback I tell you that it is so hard to defend it's so hard to seal that edge especially when this guy's Full Speed Ahead coming around the inside that's the end of the quarter San Jose State is on top they sitting in a strong position here with the lead let's take a look at our game summary one quarter to go and might we have the makings of a classic fourth quarter finish trying to get them out flanked on the Jet Sweep at the 35 he's got room brought down at the 32 yd line picks up 15 yds on the play and an important first down I love when you run this play because it forces the defense to react do you want to spin a safy down somebody better keep contained very hard to defend the Jet Sweep it's a very good play especially when you got somebody with speed taking that hand off here's the hand off makes his man miss and he's able to bounce off one tackle for a solid pick up well you got to give this offense a ton of credit because normally they've got the lead because of this running back today it's actually despite him they really haven't gotten the production out of him that they expect week in week out you got to give the defense credit for that but other guys on offense have been able to step up enough to make the plays necessary to give them the lead and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down well the defense didn't Blitz they didn't have everybody in gaps and the offensive line took advantage at the point of attack getting some push opening up a hole and the offense ripping off a nice run there and the Spartans have it with a first and 10 they'll keep it on the ground trying to milk the clock defense there to stop him after a pick up of two down to the 15 and this is a perfect situation this is a situation if you asked me to be in before the game the coaches would have been in heaven I got the football I got the lead on their side of the field nice gain on first down same exact script do it again run the football run the clock let that thing tick down and if we add points we add points the inside handoff and he finds Some solid space makes a nice game before the defense is able to stop it this offense thinks that they have enough left in the tank here to run the football and run all the time off the clock they got the lead late didn't get the first down on that last one but it's not going to surprise anybody if they turn around and hand it off again here tight quarters deep in the Red Zone but they can pick up a first down without scoring third down Brown wants to pass and makes the grab in the end zone touchdown San Jose State and it's so underrated the the relationship between a QB and a wide receiver the timing the ability to know where he's going to be and be accurate the football that's what leads to nice touchdown Jess well the chemistry between these two guys has to be great when you're throwing into because coverage is going to be tight the throw might not be perfect but this is something these two guys have been repping in practice over and over and over and it's paying dividends now on game day he'll try to add another to their lead and he splits the upright and pushes the lead to eight here in the fourth that touchdown Drive covered 61 yds and they cap things off with a 9yd touchdown pass the kickoff team takes the field to Bo this one away looking for an alley from inside his own 10 nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 he wants to start this drive with a pass fires to the tight end how about this backer in pass coverage and bringing the big hit stick with him too this off has their work cut out for him man because the coverage has been so tight and if you're not throwing to the sideline and you're not getting past the sticks this defense is going to tackle you inbounds like they just did on that last play and bleed the [Applause] clock he wants to throw here on second down got his man on the right and Midfield he's got R he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs he leaves it with his back and a really nice run and pick up there before the defense avoided disaster and stopped the really big play quick timeout called by the offense after the play trying to preserve every minute possible with a first down they'll snap it from the 32 he wants to throw and the physical play there forces the incompletion on first down now second and [Applause] 10 he's looking to throw a strike downfield he's got it and just sash into the end zone for the touchdown yeah I tell you what great job by this offense great execution they drive down the field you get the score now what's your two-point play you practiced it all week what's your go-to In This Moment late in the fourth quarter when you need the two-point conversion [Music] after the score they need this two-point conversion to tie barges ahead he charges his way into the end zone for the two and we are locked up here in the fourth a very efficient five playay scoring drive and they cap it off with a 32 yd touchdown pass we've got a Dandy going here all tied up in the fourth quarter and about to kick it away here he comes from inside his own five nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 he Wast no time and comes out throwing makes the grab ripping off a pretty good Chun of yardage they've got it out to the 41 with a first down man this quarterback is going to have to be deadly accurate here in this two-minute situation right and that's really what he's had to be all game long he hasn't had a lot of yards because the coverage has just been so tight he's had to be pinpoint perfect it's been hard just to find completions no doubt that's going to be the same thing here in this minute drive he's going to pass buys a little time at the 45 on it way time out on the field and everybody want to make sure they're organized as we come down the gut of the game they'll put it in play from the 40 on First and [Applause] 10 he's looking to throw it pulls it in it's lockart quick timeout by the def defense here trying to make sure everyone has the same call you know sometimes when you're throwing against Zone coverage you need time for the routes to develop so nice job by the quarterback there being patient allowing his receivers to work themselves open throws to the wide out and this is going to be intercepted a big play in a tie game the return never really got started but boy he has set his team up at the 28 it's the plays like that that are going to end up defining and deciding this game right it's tight tie game fourth quarter someone is going to step up and make a game-changing play and the defender did right there biggest Drive of the game right now as the clock is winding down a chance to win it before overtime they'll come out on this drive and let it rip make makes his connection boy you complete a pass like that Jesse get into plus territory and now the defense starts feeling the Heat and in these situations coaches always tell their quarterback just get a completion get the drive going so we can get some momentum put the defense on their heels as we try to move into field goal range the hurry up now second down hot kicking he's looking to throw fires left wide open downfield the offense will use a timeout clock has stopped with 22 seconds left they'll snap it from the 47 on first [Applause] down looking to move it through the air fires to the wide out just a bit of a misfire there as they can't make the connection well I know it hasn't been a tremendous day statistically for this quarterback but his decision making has been good enough to win this game hasn't thrown a lot of TD so far but when things aren't open he throws it away like on that play right there he's not putting his team in a bad spot and that's why they still have a shot to walk out of here with a W couldn't connect on first down now back to the air it's complete dragged down to the turf but not before getting the first down and listen you get Zone coverage and you can hit that Cur route and he comes open continually keep hitting it this might be a play to come back to it's first and 10 from the 31 double time hustling to the line to stop the clock brings up second down so here comes the field goal unit they've been doing work today they've already made a couple timeout is called with just two seconds left to go the holder will find a spot at the 38 y line that means a 48 Y and a chance to win [Applause] it and the kick is good he is once twice three times the kicker in this one for the game [Music] [Applause]
