[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome to Upstate New York Syracuse University and Under the Dome today we have a terrific clash and store what a game and what potential drama we have in store you've seen this script before top 10 team goes into a cauldron of emotion on the road and just hopes to be able to get out and tell about it as we'll see the number five team in the country the Virginia Tech hokey taking on another team from the ACC the Syracuse Orange glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm Rees Davis David Po and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to Tee It Up and the hokes will put total e and we'll get started and they desperately wanted to attempt a return but decided not to instead they'll take the Touchback the orange offense will take the field and they have the first possession of this game as we take a look at our impact players for this game David what you you look for to make an impact from your leaders your leaders not only have to lead the football team but they got to step up and make plays on the field keep everybody calm these guys typically do a really good job of it yeah David and they also generally set the tone for their respective football teams regardless of which side of the ball they play on the teammates look towards them to step up in big games like this after the first down completion it's second and short they'll move the chain after he gets it to the four 43 yd line wow the running back there showing you his skill set as he's able to rip off that one for a first down now on first down from the 43 yd line and he left that one short tried to baby it in there he's got to turn it [Music] loose couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they'd throw it again to the air it's mcord going for the big play makes the grab at the T so close to that end zone he could almost taste it but it'll be first and goal for this offense Syracuse has a really nice drive going they'll keep it on the ground for first and goal and he takes it in for the score touchdown orange follow the block the offensive by will take you to the Hallelujah land and I tell you what most of the time re requires a little bit of skill find that hole and you know Slither through a little crack that was not a crack that was wide open didn't take a lot of vision cu the blocking was outstanding ready to try the point after and with the extra point they get the first seven of the game they put together a five playay 75 yd drive it was closed out by the short yardage touchdown he thought about bringing that out for half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 the hookes offense taking the field first chance we have to see them today and a big key as this game unfolds is just how aggressive will he be throwing the football at a lock down corner like that yeah and when you're an elite quarterback you think you can do whatever you want to and you think you can make the right decisions I'm interested to see how much he'll test that quarterback on the other side you know there's a saying there's no defense for a perfect pass but he's got to be extra careful and sharp when he's throwing that guy's way the hes moving quickly to the line if the hes can keep this up in the passing game that'll make him touch that hokey stone with a little more enthusiasm yeah it'll get him jacked up it'll get excited a lot of times with Virginia T man we've seen it it's the defense it's the Special Teams but when they can get that QB throwing the ball down the field to create some balance it's when they have their best teams after that last completion it's second down and it'll be incomplete this is some physical pass defense couldn't find his man last time now they'll have to convert third and four looking to throw it's drones setting up the screen oh he not only blows it up he picks it off and a big return after the int sets up the offense for this possession how about the big fella I know this is not in his jav description to pick off passes but the I hand coordination able to get his Big Paw up there stabs it out of a it was like he was almost surprised he had the football just start rumbling and stumbling once he had possession quick touch pass to the receiver and he'll step across the sidelines after making a good gain on that one going to work on second down in the red zone and still some ground to cover to pick up that first down got out of trouble got rid of it excellent coverage and good use of the hands to knock it away great job on the back end in coverage DB staying in the hit pocket of the Target and was able to swat that ball away musling ahead on Third and short couldn't quite nudge it in not sure you could get much closer but it'll be first and goal this is a top 25 offense in college football and I like what they do that they can run the football on third down wedges pushes and he's over and in for the touchdown well this offense is top 10 in the country per game because they've got a lot of speed and they've got home run hitters they score fast they don't need 10 plays to go down the field you saw it right there they've recruited well they've got Playmakers they are going to be a problem for defenses all year long on to attempt the try and the extra point will tack another one onto this lead quick work on that scoring drive just four plays and they finish the deal with the quarterback sneak he'll bring it out it's Kei that gamble did not pay off as they bring him down at the 12yd line and we're about to get another look at this hookie offense boy they open this next Drive is more productive after throwing a pick last time Jesse Yeah and the coaches did a good job on the sideline there just talking to the Young quarterback and making sure he's able to turn the page calm him down to go out and refocus this drive yeah and some people do that better than others but you got to show some trust in him maybe get the ground game going help around him a little bit with this system from the gun they'll try to Middle now they've got even more breathing room out to the 31 and a fresh set of downs let's really good looking run there and you think about great hokey running backs in recent years David Wilson Lee Suggs Kevin Jones they all the ability to shake Defenders and break ankles this guy right now giving you some of those those vibes with that last run that was nice finds enough room to get three out to the 34 after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven here's the handoff just will his way for a couple out to 35 sometimes people say if you're good enough what's a big deal about going on the road well if you're not careful you might find out a spot like this one guys yeah no doubt about it this is a hostile environment and you know you're going to be getting the opponent's aame for this one they've circled this one all off seon so they better be ready to bring it today DAV and the hardest thing to do in college football is to go on the road everything about it changes and you want to shut this crowd up early you don't want to give them belief cuz if it starts to build throughout the game look out leaves it with the running back you want to talk about light on your feet man can he get through there he's down to the 37 6yd pickup on first down leaves him with second and [Applause] four little touch pass to the receiver and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play and the hes want to move quickly the give from the gun nice move to keep moving and he's able to shed one tackle and gets a pretty good pickup operating in the Red Zone here on second [Applause] down using his legs it's Toton they'll get him stop just short of the end zone but they're in business here with a first down it's hard to stop great Runners it really is that's why you run the football consistently you got a big offensive line a big physical unit you run the football like this man it will take a and he takes it to the house touchdown hokey a methodical Drive Soul crushing Spirit breaking and it ends in a touchdown and listen I know everybody wants the big plays the big long touchdown and all that stuff but putting a drive together like that is very difficult to do time and time again and it's demoralizing for the defense great drive by the offense the orange have the ball back and ready to go to work after standing on the sideline and watching that long touchdown Drive they really need to put something together to give their defense a rest and that's a real thing man like youve played a lot of plays you get worn out you need a chance to go decompress in the side and get some oxygen Palmer now it's on this offense yeah this is the definition of complimentary football cuz it's a two-prong problem you've got to score points and answer you've also got to take your time and give your defense an opportunity to get their win not a lot of daylight he gets one to the 32 all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point fires to the big fella he's R out of bounds but not before turning in a big pickup and moving the sticks for a first down new set of downs after that completion catch in the middle it's gadon still running at the 40 finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down Syracuse has a really nice drive going the back goes in motion try to get the edge with a quick touch pass he rumbles ahead for six inside the 30 to the 28 yd line all right so not a home run play for the offense but I do like the creativity and I like how they're going to stress this defense and do it in less conventional ways and a good pick up to move the chains and the clock will expire and that's how they'll be set up to start the second [Applause] quarter both teams wanted to establish the run and they have done exactly that in the first quarter they'll break the seal on this quarter here on first down easy back to pass it's mcord he's got and he will score touchdown Syracuse a methodical drive that they finish off by tossing into the tight end and the tight end I tell you what this is a position that's involved so much right see him move all over the field it's kind of like Where is Waldo you got to find this big fella especially down in the Red Zone area this is the guy they're going to Target and make the big play get the tou we check in with Kevin Connor what's going on Kevin boys if it's happening in college football we've got eyes on it check this out Purdue is currently trailing but this has been a back and forth Affair if that quarterback can find a little magic Allah Bob greasy this might not be over just yet it's just a field goal game they're trailing by three to Northwestern we are the eyes and ears of the college football fan and we've got you covered all day here in studio guys and how about that one Kevin will be keeping an eye on everything going on elsewhere the hokes want to crank the tempo he leaves it with his back and he's almost to that first down marker there saying he's a little bit short they might want to bring out the sticks and measure but it looks as if he'll be just short of the first down they think they can create space here with the run to the right and the hokes get it past the sticks this is a guy that can find you the hidden yardage that play he just pushes the pile to get that first down yeah offense will put it in play from the 47 on First and 10 they'll give it to him again that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there got three on first down it's second and [Applause] seven just when they're looking run now up top quickly out to the tight end and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down third down coming up after the completion [Applause] back to pass it's drones quickly complete he'll finally get him on the ground but not before he makes it to the 30 and gets a first down the hokes come to the line with a fresh set of downs On The Run it's Thomas drives ahead for three to the 27 yd line after the three- ydd pickup they come to the line Second and [Applause] seven he's looking to throw and that's going to be incomplete a lot of contact on the play but no Flags it'll be third down they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here he's all the way down to the three an electric run has him set up and the hokes are threatening on first and goal trying to punch it in he pushes it forward all the way to the 2yd line second and goal coming up try to barge their way in he works his way ever closer all the way down to the one ydd line well he gets tackled down at the one yd line so offensively do you feel confident enough on third here trying to hand it off again yeah and I'm taking both these downs and I'm and to the end zone he goes touchdown Virginia tack that drive was what every father wants his daughter's romances to be like slow take your time drain the clock no hurry at all sometimes love is a slow burn that's what we just saw on that last Drive I am so impressed with the execution and I love their ability to run the football these players they're coached up they're coming out here and they are executing exactly how their coaches prepared them to do in this game not much doing there he gets it to the 26 a gain of one second down coming up dropping back it's mcord a little too much on that one just out of his reach I love the decision by the quarterback he found the open man just don't love the throw got to be a little bit more accurate make it easier on your target they're going to keep this drive going they'll have to make a play on Third and long from the 26 that pass not close as he got drilled trying to deliver it and it'll bring up fourth down Syracuse will send out the punt team they'll have to punt for the first time this afternoon and nobody able to feel that punt as it rolls out of bounds and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field Jesse looking to take it down the field for backto back touchdowns I think it's really important for them moving forward too to have a lot of B bance right you want to be able to keep this defense guessing P yeah and you got me searching for answers after that last drive you stack another drive on top of this their defense's heads are going to be spinning all over the place I like this guy as a running back because he can run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all pulls and fires complete and works it through the 40 yd line that'll be a first down here's this offense with a fresh set of downs 25 they'll run it out of the shotgun you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six it's just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down quick pass on the Fly motion using the spin move now they're starting to feel it they've got a first down at the 44 the hokes had this offense rolling the give to the back not a whole lot of room there three yards maybe second and seven went to the running game on first down now here they come again hand off from the gun really nice stop there from this senior leader now that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road dropping back it's drones unloads to the right fires the pass intercepted and they'll close in on him after a good return on the interception this is obviously not a great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in this game he's got to do a much better job with his decision making the Syracuse offense heads back onto the field hands it off what a good run there he has enough for the first down it's the two-minute warning and we'll see if the offense can tack a little something extra on their lead before the break they'll line up right at the 48 yd line on First and [Applause] 10 looking to move it through the air grabbed behind the line it's Allen he's there to make the Stop and they threw it in reverse losing yardage on that play love the awareness by the defense here they're trying to get the running back the ball in space but the defense was expecting it they had guys in position they located the football and they went and gain tackle they're trying to get to it and he got smack just as he released the pass it's incomplete doesn't take this defense a lot of time to get to the quarterback man they've got speed all over the place they hit him so quickly and because of that the ball Falls incomplete they're bringing heat those two not on the same page it's incomplete and third and long everybody is pinning their ears back and coming after the quarterback you try to throw screens behind those sometimes they're very successful but this time defense played it great and the play went nowhere and we're about to get another look at at this hokei offense that last Drive was promising for a while but you just can't mess it up at the end with the pick Jesse no you got to be able to finish drives especially in this game if you're going to win in David they've got to be able to eliminate the mental mistakes yeah and I don't think you get conservative or play it safe you can trust your guy I think you put the ball right back in his hands and let him do his thing scanning the field it's drones unloads to the wide out working that left side and and he was Off to the Races finally tripped up at the 36 his offense lines up feeling awfully good after that big play he'll come out throwing on first down working the middle it's complete and chunk plays are the name of the game and they get one here before the defense finally makes the Stop and the hokes will line it up on First and 10 he wants to throw he's got it on on the Move they'll get it down to the 8 yd line on that throw and catch and the defense is backed up against the wall a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half lets it go to the end zone can't make the grab as he was looking for his man right at the goal line you simply don't see that very often quarterback of this guy's caliber missing a guy wide open in the end zone he makes those throws in his sleep he got it and he couldn't quite get to the marker and that's going to bring up a fourth down we' got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll trying to get more points on the board before the break it's fourth down and they'll try the field goal oh the kicker on the run and they're not going to pick up the first down on the fake field goal I know they wanted to be aggressive throw into the win he might have been better off playing it safe there touch pass on the Jet Sweep and he finds enough Running Room and he's marked down at the 20 we've got a timeout in the waning seconds of the half maybe a chance to get off a couple more plays with Jet Sweep pass and he'll run across the sidelines after the good gain they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more plays [Applause] they'll have just enough time to get one more snap before the half the receivers often will run their route based on a side adjustment getting some heat hit as he throws and he intercepts it didn't get a chance to show off those running skills but he gives him the ball at the 29 yd line at the end of the second quarter that means it's time to join Kevin in our halftime update fellas a typical First Rate broadcast so far today from Syracuse and it's been said football is a game of inches and guess what based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per play how can you argue that I mean the low-lying fruit is to look at some of the explosive plays we've seen in panic but really this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball and how they play when it matters [Music] most and it'll come out to the 25 no attempt at a return and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field they got a lot done through the air in the first half and they might need even more production here in the second I think they will re and I think this is an offense that has proven they're playing with good timing right now they've got some matchups where they're winning oneon-one and they're just going to have to keep going back to the well David and relying on hitting some explosive plays to win this game yeah and I think we look at numbers naturally and and they're losing so that's the most important thing on the scoreboard but they have had success and so what do you do you keep playing pitch and catch you got to score but you got to talk to your defense I need some stops I need the football back quickly so we can do some more damage a quick completion to the left looking for the first down and they'll get it to the 39 nyd line and they'll move the chains the hokes are in the hurry up third down a lot of times it comes down to not necessarily who's the most open who do you trust the most no it's not about the x's and the O's it's about the jimmies and the Joe's and when my guys better than you and I get you matched up out wide and I know I trust you I'm finding you to the air it's drones and the pass is incomplete thanks to a big hit if they can't convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on third down he'll try to pick it up through the air pulls it in it's toon you got to love that on defense one of the most critical statistics out there is how do you play on third down how do you prevent the opponent from keeping drives alive right there tackling the catch you gave up the completion whoopy do you set up fourth and long you're going to get the ball back go get some water and celebrate get it out to about the 20 yd line and that's where they'll Mark him down looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out the orange have the ball back and ready to go to work mistakes are going to happen as they did on that last drive now how will they respond J and this is the kind of guy who's going to take full accountability that was my bad that's on me I'm about to lead this offense now down the field to score some points dang Palmer I wish I would have played with you I didn't play with many quarterbacks that were just like yeah my bad hey guys I got this sorry about that it was more we should have r on a better route now here on second down see if they keep tossing it around he's looking to throw finds the tight end and he'll be taken down but he does have enough for the first down ever since they invented the forward pass the tight ends have been running the drag and getting a first down I I think it's because the tight ends is so much versatility you know they can block and stay in the formation or they can release and come out but either way if the quarterback's patient most of the time that drag route's going to come over well I love the aggressive nature of the defense on that play everybody playing with eye discipline they saw the pre- snap motion they knew who had the football and you saw guys play with excellent Instinct running down the hill and making a tackle at the 35 he's open all kinds of Running Room out of bounds after the long game but they've got it now first and goal and man this quarterback is on fire this drive they've run five plays offensively he's thr touchdown the quarterback sneak pays off as he gets it across the goal line well I think sometimes on first and goal like that you're just trying to get up to the line of scrimmage early you're trying to catch the defense off guard you go quarterback sneak they find the crease you plow forward and it work they score a touchdown lining up cover the kick after that touchdown Drive fielded In The End Zone it's heat I know he thinks he can house every return but sometimes you just have to take a knee as he stopped at the 14 and we're about to get another look at this hookie offense now we'll get a chance to see if they can answer that last score trailing by 14 Jesse Yeah and at this point of the game I feel like offensively you should go back to what's been working for you in this game don't be afraid to dial up plays that you've already had success with running it and throwing it it's okay to repeat plays down 14 at this point and I would also say Palmer kind of understanding that my defense is not playing great so I know offensively I got to put some good possessions together here make something happen on this side of the football wants to throw it's drones he's got his man keeps the legs moving and this guy has some shiftiness to him and he showed it off to the defense after picking up a few and the quarterbacks buy his Lonesome on second and [Applause] inches he's looking to throw it's complete nice pick up there gets him the first down and sets him up at the 45 yd line and the hokes are on the move the inside handoff runs through a tackle and he did didn't have a whole lot of operating room after the Juke not much room to run after the productive first down play it's second and six the give to the running back from the shotgun crosses the 40 gets it down to the 35 before he stopped a gain of six and this offense can ill afford to come up empty on this drive already trailing by multiple possessions they'll pick up enough yardage for the first down they've got it at the 30 well this defense is on its heels right now especially trying to stop the run they're just not being physical enough they give up another run right there for a first down someone's going to have to step up and make a play here he goes breaking the pocket that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there they put this ball on lock down eighth play of the drive coming up on the ground it's Thomas off he goes he's there to make the stop but not before he sets up this offense first and goal from the seven defense is backed up shadow of the goal po trying to defend their own End Zone with the run on first and goal he's got it down to the one yd line right on the doorstep of per hey five to six yds a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at math but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't for get about the Run game keep him honest pound that rock it's complete to the right he's down at the one and they almost had the touchdown pass on that one this is a money play on Third and goal guys we're at the end of the quarter and Syracuse has the lead and as we switch ends of the field let's take a quick look at the national rankings [Music] one more period to go and we'll see just how much fight they've got left in them and they'll try to bite a chunk out of this lead on Third and goal they'll try to run it in touchdown hoky and the comeback is on well we wondered exactly where the momentum was and it looks as if Uncle mole might have switched Sidelines and switched families and momentum is such a big thing it's such a real part of college football isn't it you can just feel that right now just felt a few minutes ago like this game was over and all of a sudden this team they're believing in themselves they've got some win they've got some hope their defense now needs to get the football back to keep that momentum going quarterback flips in head quickly to the receiver the expressway is wide open and it is a chunk play a huge huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end well the defense didn't Blitz they didn't have everybody in gaps and the offensive line took advantage at the point of attack getting some push opening up a hole and the offense ripping off a nice run there and he'll step out of bounds after a very productive play after the nyd pickup on first down here's second and one they feed him again they get him on the ground after he gets enough to move the s it's a point in the game I think as a coaching staff where you really challenge your offensive line to go win the football game right we've got to lead late we're going to run the football and the defense and everybody in the stadium knows that's what's going to happen can we run the ball down their throats and impose our will that's what this offense right now is trying to do they make the stop after the catch and still some work to do to pick up that first down trying to get a rhythm in the passing game now on second down look at for a crease it's Allen and he's stoed by that big defensive tackle up front stopping the run is about physicality it's about I'm bigger than you I'm stronger than you up front really nice job by the defense showing their strength bowing up stuffing the Run got enough space and he'll step into the end zone touchdown CES they put another score on the board as they try to pushed his winning streak to three another rushing touchdown that's now two on the game this offense thought they could come into this one running the ball being the more physical team and they look like it right now about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown here he comes with return rolling the dice to bring it out of the end zone did not work out as he stopped at the 13 and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field how about out that blocking up front in that running game last time as they just walked it down for a touchdown David and the big boys up front do hit the afterburners kid and they'll do more than move the chains they'll move that thing more than 30 yds down the field before he's finally stopped man if I'm a defense I got to find a way to get some more pressure on the quarterback or disrupt their timing and their Rhythm I can't give them these big chunk plays through the air I got to be maybe a little bit more aggressive or do something a little bit different and he does a really nice job finding open space and making a good gain before the stop is made from the gun give on the inside stop just inside the 25 will'll mark it at the 24 pick up of 10 and a first down the hokes come to the line with a new set of downs from the gun running back gets to give not much working there it'll be second and nine he tried to pound it on first down now back to the line 42o aler alert from the gun they'll try to impose their will they get him on the ground with this running game imposing its will 6yd gain down to the 17 and the hokes have pushed it inside the 20 it'll be a run on Third and short can't get him to the ground they make the tackle but he's got a fresh set of downs and it's first and goal from the seven the offense threatening close to the end zone now with a new set of downs looking to pass it's drones going for six he was open he had it and he dropped it would have been a touchdown instead it's second down I love the coverage on defense in the Red Zone everyone's got their eyes on the quarterback and they're flying to the football and you saw that there on the incompletion he'll run it up the middle trying to pick his way to the end zone touchdown Virginia Tech you thought they were done they're not they're back baby late in the game and the confidence is building if only there's enough time to finish time is ticking but man you gave yourself a chance now now the defense go out do your job we got the moment if you give me the ball back I'm going to win let's go defense the Syracuse offense heads back onto the field and now that cushion is a little bit smaller Jesse and any mistake would get magnify yeah a little bit of pressure now on this offense too David I think they got to go back to their Playmakers and get these guys going in the game no doubt find those plays those plays you know you can run them in your sleep you make sure you execute build this lead a little bit bigger put this thing away in the fourth quarter on second down wants to throw it going to try to pop one on on the screen oh he got loose they make the stop but there is a flag on the field we'll see what that's all about def you just can't hit the quarterback like that that is a dumb play and the defender got caught red-handed just couldn't stay off the quarterback and that roughing the passer call has them set up with a first and 10 going to run it it's Allen at the 40 there he goes oh open Runway ahead and he'll finish the run in the end zone touchdown orange starting to see some Smiles on that sideline as they close to a week 10 Victory you know this offense knew coming into the season it was so important for this guy to stay healthy they needed him week in week out because he plays at such a high level and he's showing it here that last carry was his 10th rushing touchdown of the season he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 and we're about to get another look at this hoki offense off play action on first down right down the middle got his man and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play and with that pass right there over 300 yd that's a good day at the office being able to execute doing a good job seeing what's coming and anticipating taking some shots today but has held really strong put up some good numbers they make the stop right there good pick up it's still short of the first down I think if you're the head coach at this point you're telling your offense doesn't matter what's happened up to this point of the game obviously things haven't gone our way but we have a chance to execute in a two-minute situation and give ourselves a chance to win let's go do it one play at a time to the air it's drones receiver it in it's complete he's right out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down and there was no question in that scenario that's where the quarterback was going he knew he had his receiver in a matchup that he liked running a route where he would find himself open TouchDown hoky a Lazarus likee comeback is underway before that score considering last rights now all of a sudden they're not dead yet in fact they're feeling much better and they're alive and they've got a chance and I'm looking on the field right now I'm looking at their sideline they're energized Reese after that last score all of a sudden they believe they can come back and win this game this is a totally different looking team than what we saw the orange have the ball back and ready to go to work and they've got a little bit of a cushion here David if they can add to it on this drive it would be nice and it definitely makes a little bit of a difference knowing I'm up by more than a field goal obviously Jesse my mindset switches and I know I can't make mistakes yeah and David I don't think they have to reinvent the wheel on offense here what they've been calling has been working just get back to doing what you're good at not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 he's looking to throw safe completion on the screen hard running there and he goes out of bounds after coming up with positive yardage there they're staring down the defense and this
