welcome to Happy Valley Home of the Penn State niit lions and one of the most passionate fan bases in all of college football this match up today part of the life blood of the sport a rivalry game where the results will be remembered for a lifetime as we'll see a squad from the Big 10 the Michigan State Spartans taking on the seventh ranked team in the and the Penn State NY lions for EA Sports college football I'm Rees Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me guys it's time to get it [Applause] going and the Spartans will kick it away to start us off he'll bring it back from inside his SP giving him his pass he's not going to make it to the 20 as he's out of Bounds at the 17 so Penn State's offense will get the first swing of the game and the adrenaline is pumping on overdrive in games like this guys and it's crucial to get your emotions under control no doubt in rivalry games you've got to limit the mental errors and you've got to limit the penalties cuz those will kill you B and you got to come out under control it means so much we know that the fans are all talking about it but it's just football coaches always harp about staying ahead of the chains and when you can run with that type of efficiency on first down man you are doing just that they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and [Applause] three quarterback on the keeper and this one will be stopped no game out David and here's the thing you got an opportunity right now you got the football early in this game to show you this is going to be more of the same bmer well we talked to both coaching staffs and players and they're all very aware of what happened the last time these two teams played so expect everybody's aame today Rees you're right we expect this one to be a lot tighter he knew exactly where he wanted to go with that one and they've got enough for the first down third and short and I guess the only thing they really took out of play in the shotgun was quarterback sneak yeah and that's kind of what I like to do Reese I mean third and inches I I want to run the quarterback sneak run the football but this team fully comfortable throwing the football and you see why easy pitch easy catch first down they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one they're trying to run the ball on first down guys but just nothing doing up front their offensive line got blown up on that play there was nowhere for that guy to go lost one on that last one it's second and 11 [Applause] and off from the shotgun he breaks a tackle pretty good effort on that one to work his way up to the 42 this defense has got to get better at tackling in the open field of game tackling because if you need three or four guys to bring a guy down have fun with that ball is at the 42 yd line close to four down territory here's third and short dropping back it's Allard shoots it to the left and the incomplete pass will bring up fourth down well they try to throw fourth there on third down on the opening drive of the game they don't get it but let's punt the ball away let's trust our defense and guys let's also trust this home field advantage and the crowd to get loud make it real difficult on our opponent and the nitty Lions line up to punt it away promising start to that drive sort of fizzled out and they'll have to punt it away not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair catch so the Michigan State Spartans offense will try to get something started with their first possession and David we'll see just how effective they can be on the ground running against a backer like this but they're going to do what they do and they're going to feature their guy he's an elite running back you're a great linebacker let's see who wins this battle there have been entire defenses that haven't been able to slow this running back down this linebacker though he's got the athleticism to do it himself this crowd going to try to make life miserable for these guys off the play fate just had to get rid of that one good job to fight another play the biggest lie college football coaches tell is nameless faceless opponent David game like this you know their name and you know their face you know them well it does mean just a little bit more because it's bragging rights like the rivalries matter so much all throughout the year all the fans talking about this game in particular and the quarterback is knocked down back at the 13 they'll tell you that somebody's always going to pop open but it didn't happen in time before they got the sack no it did not and you know what I'm going to remember this I'm going to remember zone defense they didn't really have an answer they weren't ready to get rid of the football quarterback I got to him and got him on the ground might be a good call later on in the game the Spartans will bring the punt team onto the field three and out and not much choice but to get rid of the [Applause] ball those hands can get a little frigid in weather like this he'll make the fair catch signal and secure the catch Penn State sends the offense back onto the field picks up the first down still mov M they get him on the ground at the 37 but give him 15 yd on that chunk play and they'll move the chains all right well look I know the defense was feeling real good about their run de coming into this one and how they've been playing up to this point but finally David the offense breaks through and they finally generate something positive on the ground and I can't tell you how easy it is when you're going to throw the ball consistently and I know it I'm going to pin my ears back and I'm going to get to the quarterback it makes life really easy on the defensive line but when you can have balance now the defense doesn't know what's coming they need more of this if they're going to be successful on [Applause] offense as they get set to snap it time winding down here in the [Applause] quarter there to make the tackle and that's how we'll wrap up this first period it has been defense all the time in the early going as we wrap up the first quarter and the stats certainly reflect that let's see if the offenses can find a little rhythm here in the second the nitty Lions have taken it inside the 20 going with the ground game left knowses his way forward maybe gets one they'll mark it at the 18 and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this run game being physical getting knockbacks and limiting his carries trying to pick up a first [Applause] down he'll pull it on the read he'll get that one all the way down to the four yd line before he stopped well this is one of the fastest quarts in college football and that's why the option's a good idea because if he can get out in space and he has a chance to get down field he is really difficult to tackle and he's very difficult to catch as you saw in that last play getting a first down they'll go with a direct snap Relentless tough running gets it down to the four they're strong and they're scraw defensive tackles they're scraw there're such big jokers in the middle where they just lock out those offensive linemen and running backs listen they don't have much of a chance when you got that 300 plus pound guy grabbing you around the shoulder pad you tend to go to the ground pretty quickly he's and he wanted the score badly but the defense wrestles him down at the two I really like this slot receiver because of his shiftiness and you see that on his route running really really nice job creating separation for his QB they've gotten right on the of the end zone they still need two yards will they try to bang it in with a run or go over the top reels it in in the end zone touchdown pen State they can use this first score to sort of set the tone guys in this rivalry matchup man doesn't this feel good to come out score early get the crowd involved get the nerves out of the way Palmer when you're playing in a big rivalry game yeah I like momentum is always a big thing in any game but in rivalry games it's that much more important because everybody is going to feed off that first score [Applause] now lining up to tack one more onto that [Applause] lead and the pat makes it s nothing that last Drive covered 52 yd on their way to the score and it was finished off with a 2yd touchdown kickoff team lining up to send this one away he'll start the return inside his spot he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 first down here with time for maybe one more play until the two-minute warning looking for space it's Carter out across the 20 to the 21 yd line a three y game the clock has reached the two-minute Mark and they have a chance to at least cut into this lead before the break this offense has a second down play looking for a man it's child unloads to the wide out and this is dropped oh my goodness sometimes you're just too open obviously when you're playing in weather like this the ball is very very slippery and it's hard to catch the QB threw a bullet that time and his receiver just but not reel it in De Rising as the crowd Gets behind this defense on third down from the gun wants to pass they're bringing heat just had to get rid of that one to save the yardage on third down and how nice is it to have the home crowd going absolutely Banis communication is harder the snapping the football on time man this crowd really affecting the football game and the Spartans will send out the punt unit this will be a second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away how many games do you see turn on a mishandled punt in the snow not this time fair catch is made he wants to start this drive with a pass lets it Fly and he dropped it oh what a missed opportunity nobody around just had too much time to think about it you cannot get any more wide open than that he had his receiver open throws the ball you think we're walking in for six and he drops it right in his hands yeah those are killers so hard to make big plays man you can't give those up fires it incomplete the D thinking bring some heat on Third and long from the 44 from the gun wants to pass using the quick game you know often times these slot receivers they're not the biggest guys in the world but they're really good at finding the Open Spaces in the middle of the field and you saw that guy attack the defense in the perfect spot making life easy for his QB the nitty Lions will putt this one away this will be the second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away they'll get down field and make the tackle right at the 16 yd Line Michigan state has the ball back and here comes the offense wasting no time throwing on this drive and the back goes down all the way back at his four yd line a timeout is called as this offense tries to find a way to get more points on the board before the half they've got them Penn deep in their own end and this crowd trying to help keep them there on the move they bring him down but a solid pick up to put them in position to pick up a first down timeout call by the defense it's their first in the half as they'll make some adjustments you make up the game land and not a lot on the play sheet for this third and long from inside their own 20 on the ground it's Carter and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker referee signals timeout it's the defense wanting to make sure that they have everything just right with a big play coming the Spartans send out the P unit on the move it's excellent coverage that time didn't give him any room to set up a big return the Dy Lions going back to work on offense now after a punt on their last possession they are set up in plus territory this time and honestly it wouldn't have mattered if they scored a touch and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback I love the defensive effort there they didn't get him right away they stayed after him he was scrambling going backwards they get the sack on the first play of the drive [Applause] that offense having to deal with the last thing you want on first down giving up a sack as they come up to the line on second down with the catch it's Saunders and I think you're seeing these guys in every offense now these little guys that they're so quick it's hard to get on them run Cris routs you can throw it short you can throw it long but they're just big time Playmakers you've definitely seen an emphasis shift towards smaller wide receivers with some serious skill they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one El L it high and deep down the left side into heavy traffic and it's intercepted going the other way and he's got room he'll go out of bounds but he gets the ball back takes it the other way and he has created a great Sudden Change [Applause] opportunity the Spartans have it back on offense hoping to play some good ball in modern college football Jesse there time there's an opportunity to attack and I like them being aggressive here too guys look they they practiced this all week long now you're in that situation to go out there have some fun and let it fly and defenses are taught to stay deep play prev in these situations so I think you could get a good chunk play and then possibly get a field goal to tack on before the half and he drops it just a little too slippery in the hands looked like the offense had a chance for a big play there but the running back just could not reel that ball [Applause] in just a few seconds remaining here as they try to put something up before halftime dropping back it's child this time he's got his man and he's able to shed one tackle and gets a pretty good pick up they'll use a timeout right before halftime maybe time for one or two more plays and it's down but they're going to go ahead and try the field goal and try to get points before the break and that is no good after that Miss still a seveno game guys just enough time for one final play in this [Applause] half comes out throwing on first down he tosses one high and deep down the left side pass is incomplete and that's going to do it for the first half first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connor in our halftime update phas what an environment there today all the animosity and Flatout hatred that comes with a good oldfashioned rivalry game on display in that first half and it's been said football is a game of inches and guess what based on the comparison between third down conversion rate today and the average yard per play how can you argue that I mean the low-lying fruit is to look at some of the explosive plays we've seen in panic but really this game is going to come down to which team is more efficient when they have the ball and how they play when it matters most with that let's throw it back to the guys to see how this rivalry match up plays out looking for an alley from inside his own 10 couldn't find a way to create that broken field as he stopped at the 25 Michigan state has the ball back and here comes the offense the sledding has been tough scores have been at a premium Jesse in every possession seems like it could switch the momentum of the game yeah for this off just feel like they just haven't been as physical for this offensive coordinator David he's having to go deep into the Playbook just to try to generate a first down and the good thing is there's not a ton of game pressure because the other side's not scoring either but if you can find that one thing that get that one positive play and then maybe you get those juices going and something can start to build one step W twep squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground the Run game just has not been working for this defense all game long saw it on that last play as well just not getting enough push up front on the and the Spartans racing to the line in the hurry up he is stopped behind the line of scrimmage they'll lose yards on that one I love defenses that can tackle the catch right away they're not giving up any y that player has the ball he goes down now third and long from the 42 if they can get some of it it might give them a chance to go for it on fourth down to the air it's child makes the grab over the middle and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down one of the things I love about this defense they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tackle to First the punt that is so well done the Spartans will punt it away on fourth down a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work H State sends the offense back onto the field man oh man these offenses just haven't been able to find any room to get things going David and to quote the great philosopher ree Davis this is very UNG good just nothing working for this offense Palmer they got to find something well the plays look good against the scout team during the week in practice but they have just not been able to find a rhythm against this defense today after the productive first down play it's second and six he's looking to throw fires to the wide out it's caught downfield and he's knocked down immediately but not before he moves the chain this receiver is so dangerous out in space shot by the QB getting him the ball early on the curl route you see once he has it he's got some wiggle he's got some shake makes him Defenders Miss and gets up the field he wants to throw fires a bullet now it's picked off not a lot of room on the return but he' already gotten the most important thing the ball and they have it at the 46 you don't see a lot of teams that are successful throwing the football in the snow and obviously on that that last one got away from the quarterback nowhere close to the intended receiver and the defense able to come away with the int the Spartans have it back on offense hoping to play some good ball and then a lowc scoring game like this one David every possession is magnified and I think more than anything it just gets frustrating and you got to put that behind you you got to see what this defense has been doing to be so successful now use it against yeah David I think for a play this is tough right it's like you have to have the perfect play on just to get a first down in these types of games I think you're just trying to get guys out in space see if a dude can break a tackle maybe that generates an explosive play and it breaks this trend misses receiver there it's incomplete and how loud is it in this building this is crazy this these fans are going absolutely nuts and I used to love when the fans got involved and I'm on defense because it messes with the snap count communication and it can really rattle an offense better find the earplugs here comes the noise backing this defense on third down and there was nowhere to go for this quarterback and down he goes man this defensive end is a monster you've seen his athleticism and his speed his Bend and his flexibility he now has two sacks and there's still a lot of football to play and the Spartans decide to putt it away doesn't say much for your drive when you're looking forward to the punt he'll get away another punt he's been really active today and no doubt he's going to earn his varsity letter the Dy Lions going back to work on offense now one of the most valuable things a quarterback can have David shortterm memory just forget that last pick you dang right clear the mechanism it's over move it behind some players can't do that real well and it leads to more mistakes Jesse you got to just forget about it and move on and I think the coaching staff can help him too David I think you can get the running game going here and also give him some easy throws second down coming up on the ground it's Singleton crosses the Third he's got away and they'll move the change with the first down but that might be it for the third quarter we've come to the end of the quarter and it's Penn State on top three quarters are in the books time becomes a factor both trying to hold the lead or cut into it as we take a look at the steps they'll break the seal on this quarter here on first down motion trying to get the defense to show it hand on the option he'll toss it and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land what a great play by the linebacker you talk about filling a hole defensive line does their jobs he comes in the hole says sit down sir time is on their side and they're going to wind that play clock all the way down now the play fake unloads to the right got his Man Down field pied off a huge chunk play on that one as he gets the first down before he steps out of bounds what a beautiful throw and catch on this play and I love the job the receiver did tracking the ball in the air nice job of locating the throw and then hauling it in the nitty lines are flying down the field he'll come out throwing on first down he's got an open man he gets it all the way down to the 5 yd line a terrific catch and run before he stop this is so interesting right now watching this offense stay aggressive they've got the lead in the fourth quarter and you're thinking at home we got to just run the ball and try to bleed the clock they found something on defense they're taking advantage of two straight completions I won't be surprised if they throw it [Applause] again gets it out fast and he'll run it into the end zone touchdown NY liyan now they have extended this lead guys starting to put the hammer but sometimes a rivalry game can give you a little of extra fight back and there can be no Panic at this point now you worked too hard this off seon David they've had this game circled for so long you've got to play your best football right now and fight back and you just need something good to happen on this next possession you got to get the crowd back into this football game big rival get some emotion get some momentum on your side ready to try the point after and the extra point is true and they have a two touchdown lead up 14 in the fourth they're lining up to boot it away [Applause] he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their Lane and they'll stop him at the 16 Michigan state has the ball back and here comes the offense boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this drive they'll line up for a second down play back to pass it's child this time it's complete pick up of five it'll be third down and five this offense has their work cut out for him man because the coverage has been so tight and if you're not throwing to the sideline or you're not getting past the sticks this defense is going to tackle you inbounds like they just did on that last play and bleed the clock the Spartans want to crank the [Applause] tempo shotgun snap wants to throw it on third he can't make the catch had it right in his hands and it'll be fourth down nice job in coverage on that third and short defensively taking all the throws and options away for the quarterback and now we're setting up fourth down it's Fourth down now and this likely the final snap before the two-minute warning he'll try to throw and pick up the first down incomplete on fourth down and man did they need to keep that drive alive they'll keep it on the ground trying your milk for clock timeout called there by the defense desperate to get the ball back and save as much time as possible no reason to do anything here except keep it on the ground on second and five they'll give it to the back he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense a third and long coming up here out of the gun the give to the back he's knocked down in the back field he a couple defense uses a timeout quickly trying to get that ball back and preserve time for their offense they'll try to get something out of this drive and kick the field goal here on fourth down and this field goal attempt might just seal the deal by making it a three-score game L it's good and that was dead solid perf and now the leads extended the [Music] they're really starting to extend that lead as they get ready to kick it away again on the run from inside his own five just never had a chance to shake loose and he'll be brought down at the 24 the Spartans have it back on offense hoping to play some good ball this offense has pretty much been stuck in the mud the entire game it's been a frustrating performance Jesse Yeah listen you can't be hanging your head just yet this game's not over this coaching staff is still evaluating their player so if you're on the field right now you've got to finish this game you've got to try to prove something to them well the game is H to be clear they're not coming back but I I hear what you're saying keep fighting keep showing your coaches it matters and maybe find something positive here late that you can build on for the weeks to come some heat on that completion and the defense makes the immediate tackle but he has enough for the first down well this offense has not put their best product on the field today they've got no points to show for any of their efforts so far but they've still got a chance but if it's going to happen it has to happen now in this two-minute situation this is where their Playmakers need to step up to the air on first down and the quarterback is snowed under and they get him again this has not been the day we expected this young man we expect great things like he is one of the better players in college football you think he'd come out put on a show but this defense has had his number all game long now they've got to hustle to the line and get set and they'll get to the line and Spike and stop the clock third Ball's at the 29 defense can taste getting off the field it's third and long scanning the field it's Charles he finds his man and he's able to bounce off one t solid pick up well here's the problem offensively because you're trailing by so much so late in the game the defense now is going to be playing big Zone coverages and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field rally to make a tackle and bleed the clock it's going to be hard now for this offense to claw their way back in this one on fourth down they'll throw for it he's taking the Deep shot and it's incomplete the long pass on fourth down to no avail so with the late lead they're ready to just drain the clock in Victory formation for
