John Legend on Performing at the DNC, New Children’s Album & Getting in Trouble with Chrissy Teigen

our next guest is known for making music to make love to now he has an album for the children who come out of that love making it's called My Favorite Dream please welcome John Legend [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] how are you oh you look very stylish very handsome that was a that was a perfect way to frame the situation what situation what do you mean the fact that babies are conceived to my music and then and then now I've created something for the babies that come out of it that's amazing it's really I didn't think of it that way but now that you've said it it's a warning is what it is it's like don't get too crazy or else you're going to have to buy this one and you're going to be singing along there you go first of all I want to ask about this because you look just like you yes it's me I mean that is so you right there I mean and at some point in their lives all four of my kids have looked pretty much exactly like that hold on I want to see something uhoh you're drawing a beard give me a second here I'm going to I was 2 and a half then I couldn't quite grow a beard yet you couldn't huh how long I was working on it how long how old were you when you first grew your beard uh the first time I had a beard I probably was like you know 17 18 really that young huh oh all right now let's see okay now see if anyone can tell the difference between this guy right now it's me that is you right let's see the side by side it's me it's beard and mustache night here now I assume you made this album for your kids I made it for my kids but I made it for everybody's kid too of course do your kids like to hear you sing they do they like it and uh they're enjoying the new music they they they dig it it's funny because I think most kids don't like hearing their parents sing maybe when you're a baby you like well maybe they're not John Legend apparently that's right that's right they're not do you sing them to sleep do you have like lullab that sometimes but I feel like sometimes singing is a little distracting if I'm there in the room singing to them but playing them the music on low it actually helps them go to sleep yeah so you put the music on a speakers in the room or whatever I have a song called go to sleep on the album oh that's good it's like hypnosis it like puts you in a trance really yeah do you use it on Chrissy as well you like it doesn't work on I haven't tried that I I'll figure that out later Chrissy and the kid and two of your kids sing on one of the songs they sing on the on the first single a song called lve and uh you know I was uh working on the arrangement uh the album was produced by sufan Stevens amazing artist and arranger and producer and I was like I I really want the kids and Chrissy to sing on this one and he sent me a few voice notes of ideas for what they could sing and I just had them uh sing it in my studio and they they did a good job why not all the kids are a couple of them no good Ese and ren they're too young honestly they're not ready they're not ready but they they actually love that song a lot they dance to it and even though they didn't sing on it I think they don't realize that they were excluded from the backing vocal credit they'll figed out eventually and there's going to be trouble you're going to have to record another one of these is what's going to happen your daughter did the um artwork yeah she did all the artwork for the singles for the singles so the one I'm doing tonight has always come back and she designed that cover for always come back she designed the single cover for uh Lov how old is Luna Luna is eight now now when you need her to draw some stuff for your album do you give her notes yeah I gave her some notes I gave her suggestions for what to do and then a couple times we had to iterate I see you know try it again uhhuh oh really you had a couple try again a couple this one I think was uh take one but there were a couple of the covers that need needed a a second take and did you say like okay the songs always come back so draw the family in front of a house yeah I said something like that it was her idea to make it a rainbow house and the Sunshine all that stuff she added her own flavor to it yeah my daughter doesn't take notes at all she's 10 years old no no she'd be like your daugh she's 10 she'd be like okay here's the drawing I'd be like you know it would be great if you did this she'd be like yeah roll it up and put it up your ass [Applause] [Laughter] Luna's not 10 yet so uh we'll knock on wood and hope she doesn't get that way oh you brought a video that's very very cute and that I appreciate greatly uh do you mind if we share this because you're a hit in our house with the kids too and we read your book to our kids that's very nice and uh well this is a a video that John brought along is what are you doing are you being silly goose yeah I like that that's like slobber Goose you got there yes we love the silly goose book and we've been reading it to all the kids since Luna was born and so you know it's a big part of the family oh very nice very flattered by that by the you were at the you did let's go crazy at the DNC that was fun was that a fun night for you that was so fun now you know I I was walking through the halls of the arena and I was pretty Star Struck because I watch the news a lot and I like recogn ize a lot of the people I see on like you know all the news shows I watch and I was pretty Star Struck just seeing Senators who are you excited to see tell me give me some of the Senators and governors like Governor Shapiro is there and uh Senator cloar and all these people that probably most Americans are like who and uh like this is my this is my Superstars right and probably like Amy clob is like what you're you're a fan of mine she's probably confused by that yeah well I had a great time it was really fun performing there but also just seeing you know democracy and action it was fun yeah yeah and the spirit in the room was as we saw on television it was electric it was it was yeah so now no good deed goes unpunished and your wife um posted this oh yeah text exchange I got in trouble before your wife posts uh a text exchange between you does she check with you at all that you pass that that's it's just like if you do it you know there's a possibility yeah you know she likes to roast me sometimes in public and this was one of those moment it's like having TMZ in your house a little bit right cuz I've noticed over the past few days my wife keeps um videotaping me doing things and I know it's something for Instagram and it's driving me crazy well you know what we we the mistake we made we both married funny women and uh they next wife not going to be funny at all sometimes exactly right I me no humor sometimes sometimes we're we're the victims of their humor yes exactly and it it doesn't work out so well for I like to be the perpetrator not the victim exactly so this is um a private text conversation that you got uh you were subject to after your performance yes I was supposed to tug my ear they Christy was like how are you going to tell us you know that you love us you're thinking of us and Luna was like you should tug your ear and I was like okay I'll do that and I shouldn't have said that because I I got out there on stage and I'm performing and I was really just focused on giving a good performance and I was not focused on fulfilling my promise to Luna and I did not tug my ear and Chrissy outed me on this uh failure of mine a Carol brunett style tug on the ear yeah so here's my ear oh now you're tuing your ear yeah try to make up unfortunately the kids are sound asleep now right yeah not a single was tugged oh my God I completely lost it you did but you did a good job but you did a good job too bad it won't matter to our children I wonder what that dot dot dot that yeah dot dot dot menacing dot dot dot is going to be so you're going to do uh a song and um this would be a great time for people to wake their kids up yeah and gather them around the tel not let them sleep that's why we have all the recording devices you can play it for them in the morning yeah that's one way way yeah yeah for me it' be better if you wake them up okay um he wants the instant ratings what song are you going to do here tonight okay so tonight's song is always come back uh this is the the debut live performance of the song and uh always come back I wrote Because you know we travel you go out on the road yeah I go out on the road and lots of parents go out for work or have to leave their kids for one reason or another and we always say mommy and daddy we always come back back and uh so I wrote a song about it all
