Pregame [Applause] it's the NFL on EA Sports well we'll see which conference Reigns Supreme today it's the Dallas Cowboys and the Los Angeles Chargers all that and more coming up next night beginning to fall over Southern California but the lights are shining bright here at the spectacular Sofi stadium in Metropolitan Los Angeles Straight Ahead we've got a pretty good one on tap here as it'll be the Dallas Cowboys taking on the LA [Applause] Chargers with Charles Davis as always I'm Brandon Gardon Charles you talk about story lines in this one I think it begins and ends with our two quarterbacks certainly two of the best in the business and nowadays I don't think you can get by for long periods of time without a Top Flight quarterback the way the game is played with all the responsibility he has and how the game flows through him if he's not on the top of his game your team's not going to benefit at all [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] 1st quarter the kickoff unit is out on the field and they will send this one away and he won't get this to the 20 yd line as he's down at the 19 so here the Cowboys now ready to go on offense for the first time and trotting out there a guy who's established himself as a veteran in this league now in his fifth year at quarterback this is what this man was born for the big Spotlight on a national stage like this really his entire career he's demonstrated incredible Poise no matter what type of situation his team was in no situation is too big for him and you can tell in the way that he takes the field his self-belief is evident and he gets a job done in his mind each and every time they go playaction now Aman he finds his man complete it's Pearson and they'll get it all the way up about five yds shy of Midfield a good pickup there 26 yds playaction here on the first play from scrimmage they want to see how the linebackers are going to react are they looking to stop the run or are they going to sit back in coverage a really nice job there of going in attack mode early and they pick up a quick first down and some room to maneuver and he'll go down but not before getting this inside the 30 boy a pair of big plays here this one going for 29 all right I've got to be careful here all right he's on the plus side of 30 there may be a little gray in the beard but that's not slowing down his feet as far as he's concerned what are you saying I'm on the plus side of 30 well if you're on the plus side of 30 you don't know what I'm on the plus side all I know is that run right there let us know there's still some life in those legs absolutely still got a lot of life left in those legs and that flag [Applause] accepted the full start backs him up five first and 15 now Aman and incomplete a drop there in the middle third of the field that'll bring up second down after watching him drop that slant I can hear my old Co CO's voice ringing in my ears right now you can't run with the ball until you catch it trying to get those rack yards before he secured it so they'll come up after the incompletion for second down here's Aman setting to throw it he finds his man complete it's lamb it's a pick up of 12 and that'll set up a third down [Applause] the heavy set out there three tight ends in the formation for third and [Applause] three they'll try and run for it with Smith and they work this near the five he'll be stopped at the six 42 yds rushing for him now at his first two carries of the ball game a stopped there on third they could have held him to three on this opening drive now they have to bow their necks on first and goal and if I'm look at this from the offensive point of view that's a big time pickup right there and I go right at him with another momentum play I go quickly and attack him because right now they probably have their heads down a little bit since they didn't stop them on third [Applause] down playaction it's Aman and it's incomplete not only did he have a chance to scan the field there felt like he had a chance to scan it twice the protection was that good unfortunately for him the coverage down field equally good they come up here with another shot from the 6yd line and it's second and goal [Applause] now up the middle here's Elliot and he'll take it into the end zone for a cowboy touchdown a Ezekiel Elliot a 6yd touchdown run and the Cowboys will claim the early lead as they're on the board first here tonight well just about an ideal start to this one offensively because on the road you want to make sure you quiet the home crowd early and how do they do it nice march to start things off let the Run game find its footing early that drive certainly checked a lot of boxes and they finished it off with a touchdown run extra point right down the middle and it's now a seven nothing game Bailey now to kick it away after the touchdown from a yard or two deep here comes a return and no chance to get away as they'll get him down at about the 17 yd line so here's the charger offense making their way out and let out by their veteran quarterback he's been around a while they don't celebrate birthdays for him they just cut him up see how many rings he's got around the middle he has been in the league a long time every time he leads his team out there's no questioning he's put the work in in to earn his place in the NFL there's no shortage of stories we've heard throughout his career about the effort he puts in to be in this spot and that motivates everybody on his team first down Rivers wide open it's Allen complete and he's going to get this one across the 30 yd line that play going for 16 yds to start the drive first down defense gives up a touch down the open Drive offense you got to want to get out there and get those points back right now and that's a sharp throw there to get this drive off to a good start so they'll come up first and 10 now from the 33 a give up the middle to Tomlinson and that's going to be good for a Chargers first down as the tackle made at about the 43 yd line well no slow start here a couple nice chunk plays back to back I love the momentum that they're showing here early because they did it both ways right through the the ball on first down for a nice chunk of yardage came right back and ran the ball looks like they've got the defense set back on their heels let's see if they can keep this moving and they'll let the quarterback keep it here on First and 10 and he's got this one across Midfield into Cowboy territory he'll get eight on the keeper there it'll be second and a couple oh man that wasn't far from breaking in a big way into the secondary read option quarterback kept it and while he didn't get a first down he did get nice chunk of yardage only a nice tackle prevented it from maybe going all the way now a second down throw for Rivers into heavy traffic and it's intercepted and he's just across Midfield and down at the 49 yd line a Brandon this is a veteran quarterback back there he should know better than to make a throw like this this is definitely not his best ball and I think he knew this was trouble the second it was leaving his hand [Applause] second Drive forthcoming here for the Dallas Cowboys they'll be looking to duplicate that first drive the one that got him that seven nothing lead of course they would look they're on the road so getting the seven to nothing lead was huge for them right imagine getting up two touchdowns on the road taking the crowd out of the game it' be ideal [Applause] first down here's hman he finds his man complete that's lamb and he's coralled but not before getting it inside the 35 it's a gain of 16 and the Dallas first down well as a coach you absolutely love seeing your offense find their Rhythm early and that's exactly what we've seen so far they had a touchdown on their opening drive and now they connect here for another nice gain for a first down this offense is moving the ball well exactly as he drew it up in practice now a throw here holded in and he takes this just a few yards shy of the Red Zone before going out and that's good for a pickup of 10 yards and they'll be left with a second and about a [Applause] foot they go play action with Aman and it's knocked away and incomplete quick hands that time to knock that one away it should looked like a short touchdown but able to get a good break on the football and force the incompletion an incomplete pass on second down leads us to Third and inches inside handoff Smith and he will have a first down at about the 21 yd line just about every coach we talk to says the crowd shouldn't affect us that shouldn't be an issue and then the next breath they talk about taking the crowd and taking them out of the game by picking up first downs and keeping them at Bay I think we just saw an example of that there didn't we important to do especially early in the game like they have they keep it with Smith on first down and this one goes nowhere losing yardage back at the 22 he'll lose a yard there and it's second and 11 that's exactly what you're looking for at the inside linebacker spot versatility he can drop into coverage or as he did on that last play use his speed to get to the perimeter and knock the ball carrier for a loss A M will throw and they're going to get him he's sacked back around the 28 it'll go as a loss of about six and now it brings up third but found his way into the back field and he simply would not be denied well they say that life's all about opportunities and that holds true when you're playing defense as well how about him seeing that chance making the most of it did a great job of wrapping him up and bringing him and pressure coming and they got him once again and the defense coming through on third down a loss of seven to bring up fourth and when you go five wide like they just did there you can't really Max protect can you no you cannot what you're hoping is that by going five wide you're forcing the defense into coverage and if you do that you got a chance to find some people down field but if they audible themselves and go into a blitz then it's got to happen right now light out exactly right turn them out that plays over so Charles they get to them with their first turnover of the game and then make it hurt a little bit extra with a field goal and anytime you give the ball up what's the first thing a coach tells his defense don't let them score off of this you've got to put out the fire in fact in 2021 that's what one NFL coach termed his defense the firemen go out there guys and don't let him put some points on the board so after the made field goal 10 nothing here early as the kicks [Music] away and here comes a return from just beyond the goal line and only able to get this to the 19 so probably should have opted for the Touchback the Chargers get set to go here for their second Drive they find themselves down 10 nothing early after the interception on their opening drive led to a field goal so now they've got to pick up the mantle a little bit you mentioned the team's down 10 they've helped contribute to that how are they going to get their team back into this ball game Run the offense that you think is going to be effective and execute it at a high level now tomblinson on First and 10 down he goes at the 23 a pick up of four I feel like I could see what he was thinking on that carry wanted to follow that big tackle through the hole ended up only getting four yards on the carry I think he had designs on that one being bigger from the 23 here's second and six they toss it to Tomlinson oh a Juke and he'll get this up past the 25 before he's out of bounds it's a 5yd gain but they'll still be a yard short here with third down now looming today's NFL you hear all the time about stretching the field and creating space in order to run plays a toss play will help accomplish that because now you're pushing a defense to chase you all the way to the edges and to the sideline that's a nice run probing now early to try and get things done later and they nearly get this all the way to Midfield Mark him down at the 49 well they were in search of a short gain on third down and they wind up nabbing over 20 yds well partner that's one of the problems when you sell out to stop the run on Third and short sometimes you break the initial wall and you go a long way so how do you prevent it that's tough to do that really is tough to do one of the things offenses like to do nowadays in practice you know they do a lot of of working against equal numbers they'll start putting more and more numbers on defense and just telling the offensive guys figure it out learn how to block it we may see the situation now meanwhile a pass that should have been intercepted but it winds up falling incomplete hav met a corner that's worth theault yet that ever admits to worrying about man coverage how about the play there breaking that pass up so now second and 10 after the incompletion on first down to throw his River a throw out wide going to be incomplete had the right idea there trying to throw it to the sideline but he led him just a little bit too much trying to get it out to his receiver ends up falling to the ground incomplete so back-to- back incompletions and that has him staring at a third and 10 throwing Rivers nowhere to go here he lost the football it's picked up by the Cowboys still going inside the 20 and this is going to be brought back for a fumble return touchdown by the Cowboys and Charles look at the big fella what a rumble that was not only to scoop it but then take it the rest of the way for the touchdown and now you know they're going to have to hear about it from now on the defensive backs he's going to want to run with them do their drills the whole deal he thinks he's the pace setter now it doesn't matter what happens in practice this week he's [Applause] smiling now the try here for the extra point he's got it and it's 17 nothing so not only the cough up but then the pick pick up on the other side the scoop and the score the other way the fumble return for a touchdown [Applause] so an early Advantage now and a good one 17 nothing our score as they kick this one away from a couple yards deep he'll bring it out of the end zone and ultimately cannot get this out to the 25 yd line as he's dropped at the 23 La set to take over again on offense and job one here Charles just keep possession of the football two drives two turnovers to this point you're exactly right doctor h atic oath first Do no harm and right now they're harming themselves on offense I like that no one is mistaking me for a doctor though but thank you Dr Davis on First and 10 Rivers throwing quickly there but it's incomplete think he's a little trigger happy right there and it turned into an ill-advised throw into their Zone well we know he has confidence he'll throw at any play place anytime anywhere that time it fell incomplete once again they'll go from the 23 yd line on second and 10 rivers that one's complete to Tomlinson and he's able to get out to the 32 brought down there nine yards not quite enough and they'll be left now with third and one so they just need one yard here to pick up the first down now it's a bootleg with [Music] rivers he's got his running back out of the back field and he is going to have the Chargers first down by a couple of yards as they're able to convert there on Third and one another catch for him there on this drive Brandon it looks like going to utilize him out of the back field any way they can and that time they pick up a first down so now on defense do you assign a man to him and try and cover him before he gets going meanwhile the throw here is complete a gain of three last play this time they double it and pick up six second down and four rivers to throw it Allen has it left side and he's going to have another first down here as the tackle made at the Cowboys 42 17 yds on the play as they try to eat into this 17-point deficit these guys certainly need something good to go their way because this first quarter has been something of a disaster for them trying to move the ball but that completion there maybe can get them focused and moving in the right direction so from Cowboy territory now here's first and 10 at the 42 yd line they'll throw again Rivers Gates has it over the middle and that's good for a gain of six and it'll be second down it certainly feels like they're more stars at the tight end position than there were even 10 years ago and I think it's become more of a glamour position because of the ways it can hurt a defense and guys want to be involved they can be in line close to the line of scrimmage they can split out like receivers but hands route running speed and some toughness to go across the middle you put it all together you got heck of a tight end candidate a gain of five good enough for the first down now movement up front I think they're going to get one of the charger [Applause] [Music] linemen so they'll go ahead and accept the penalty still first the F start backs him up five first and 15 out of the gun it's Tomlinson and he is met in his tracks behind the line of scrimmage that sends him two yards in the wrong direction and leads to Second down 17 nothing our score after one Charger football to start quarter number two as they've got it facing a second and long situation play fake 2nd quarter Rivers right side catch this is Gates so much goes into a successful play doesn't it how about that play action there freezing the defense just enough to bring the tight end free downfield for the [Music] completion the Chargers on third down they've been okay two for three thus far this is third and seven to throw Rivers work in the middle of the field and he's got a man complete and he's going to have another first down here as the tackles made at the Cowboys 18 give them 10 yards there as this offense is on a roll this drive continues to plunge forward and that's well executed there on third down and I love the confidence that they had to let their tight end try and find some space in the middle of the field right in their quarterback's line of vision and QBs Lov to make that easy throw and they hooked up there for a first down back to the running game it's Tomlinson and he'll take it from the 18 to the 15 a gain of three well they've certainly had success throwing the ball on this drive and not as much running it as we just saw once again on that last play stopped after a very short gain but I wouldn't abandon the Run totally because otherwise pass rushers just tee off on your quarterback makes it very very difficult for him in that situation throwing Rivers complete Hunter Henry with a grab and he is going to lose yardage here now they're staring at a third and eight that last play Backwards a yard but looked like the defense they were ready for that one really left him almost no room to work after catching the ball he could throw every move in the book at them they were there and they tackle him for a loss on third down Rivers oh and that is incomplete so two third down conversions on this drive but not able to get a third and now they deal with fourth down they converted twice on third down that drive already but couldn't make it a third we always talk about in-game adjustments how about what the defense did there able to shut him down on that attempt and his kick here is good and they're on the board at least here it's now 17 to three so Charles they are on the board after that kick so three drives three points obviously not the start that you were hoping for but they're able to erase that zero off the scoreboard yeah I guess what you're saying is a point of drive is not what offenses are striving for by any stretch they're happy they've got three now they hope that that unlocks their offense for bigger points down the [Applause] road set now to kick this one away and off it goes from his in zone here's Renfro and only able to get this to the 19 so probably should have opted for the Touchback there again is the running back as he trots onto the field he's been effective so far over the 40 yd Mark here in the second quarter don't forget about those guys up front though they've been effective too The Leverage game has been in their favor they've been the ones who've been able to bend their knees drop their hips and get a little bit lower than the guys on the other side of the football and they've moved them out of the way for the runner sometimes that's tough for those Big Fellas not an easy thing for them to do they begin with a run by Smith fights forward for only about a yard up to the 21 yeah things were pretty stacked up there in the middle of the line a lot of bodies not much space I think ultimately he was fortunate to get anything out of that run second and nine now from the 21 now it's Aman and on the left side he's got Wilton and he's going to be Tak taken down plus there's a penalty flag in the back field they may get 15 more on top of this well Charles sometimes we talk about the lengths officials sometimes go to to protect star quarterbacks but that one that was tough to argue against yeah and I'm sure that everyone's going to say hey we're going to administer the penalty the same way for all quarterbacks but when it's a star back there even more so are they going to be diligent about throwing the flag and that's good for a pickup of 10 yards and that'll leave him with a second and just a few inches left I know sometimes we can get fool when we watch him make catches as we just saw him do there because he really looks like a wide receiver the way he goes about his business yeah 230 240 range yeah not not super huge maybe not counted on to be that inline point of attack blocker that we used to have in the good old days but you can Flex him out you can run wide receiver routes with him you can make him a primary target and that's got he shredded defense and give them two yards there as they're set up now with a first and goal and defensively they were in zone coverage there do you have to be a little careful you're losing playing against a good quarterback like he is to not play too much Zone yeah you have to be careful about how much time you're giving up I think it's a good point you just brought up so maybe if you still want to play zone you go to a Zone Blitz scheme and you can drop anyone out of your defensive front defensive end defensive tackle it doesn't matter you just exchange someone to bring more pressure towards the quarterback and still try and cover [Applause] downfield two of their three Red Zone trips so far they've come up empty on they'll look to reverse that trend on second and goal they'll let the fullback try and take them home and they'll bring him down after just a short pickup they follow up the first down one yd run with a minimal gain of two pretty good job defensively thought he was going to get it but they knew where that marker was and they stopped him just short of it what it does is emphasize that strategic football and situational football is not just played on the offensive side is it defense understanding as you noted where the first down marker was and making sure and that is caught it's Whitten for the cowboy touchdown a great play there there to make the grab and the Cowboys take a three touchdown lead there was no going through the progressions on that touchdown pass yeah nor was it necessary his receiver won that route early presented himself no reason to wait go ahead and put it on him and score touch down extra point splits the uprights and the lead now to three touchdowns at 21 [Applause] Bailey now to kick it away after the touchdown taken at about the one and he will make it to the 20 yd line and no further and now out on the field Here Comes Los Angeles it's been very much a slow start for them three drives and just the three- points CD yeah if you're into the points per Drive ratio that answer is one and that's not going to get it done in a ball game they've got to find a way to finish these drives in end zones not having balls go through goal posts they'll start this drive out on the ground and he's stopped right at the 25 after a gain of five not a huge play but I think they're more than happy with how it turned out don't be surprised to see them revisit that call because there was a lane there for more than just five yards put in your back pocket and break it out when you need it later here's a second and five now from the 25 now Rivers [Applause] it's a short one here complete to the ti end six yds the pickup and that's a first down it's been a very one-sided game so far they got to change what they're doing right now don't they you can't wait till the halftime speech to make an adjustment no you can't because if you're doing it right you're adjusting from series to series and they need a big adjustment here to try and put some points on the board a first down throw here for Rivers quick hitter here it's complete [Applause] they work now on second and nine now rivers and that one complete downfield to Allen and he'll be taken down but not before they work it across Midfield 22 yds there a first down and I don't think there's any question that this offense is going to need to hit on a few more plays like this it's been a difficult first half for them to say the least and I do believe if they want to get back in this game they need to start right now it's kind of like making adjustments if you try and wait until the half it's probably too late they need to get going right here first down rivers and his throw is going to be incomplete whenever I see a drop like that I have to kind of take a step back and check myself a little bit so used to seeing those big guys make big time spectacular plays that when they drop one I have to remind myself we ask a lot out of these guys block and catch the football not easily done in today's NFL on second down it's Tomlinson he'll get only three there so it leaves him with a third and seven ahead pretty good little two-play sequence there you forcee in completion than a very short pickup yeah now maybe you bring in an extra defensive back or two because you want to try and defend on third down they like to play those nickel or sub packages don't they and now on third down they'll need to get it to the 36 to pick up the first Rivers able to find the open man that's complete and he's going to have another first down here as the tackles made at the Cowboys 25 yd line 18 yds the gain for number 18 now that's the kind of big play you'd like to see this first half it hasn't gone their way and they could use a shot in the arm something to perk them up a bit and they get one here in the passing game from the gun they give to tomblinson and he edges forward but only gets a pair of yards out of it it's second down well that call makes sense because they've been throwing it well on this drive and once again they show passing formation showing the shotgun then they ran out of it that's a nice play by them defens ly though to hold it to a short gain ball at the 23 Second and eight playaction now rivers and this will be caught in the end zone for a Chargers touchdown 23 yds for the touchdown and the Chargers get a bit closer their first passing touchdown of the ball game and they go to the big tied end in those sure hands and he provides the score certainly looked like they were focused on taking away other weapons and he certainly made them regret that because he found the soft spot ended up taking it to the end zone nice throw too to complete the play a try here for the extra point and this is up and good that'll make it a score now of 24-1 so that drive 80 yds plays and it ends with the Chargers getting into the end [Applause] zone the kick unit on here for the Chargers as they will send this one [Applause] away this fielded right at the goal line and he returns this to the 22 and now Dallas get set to take the field they have to be pleased with the way that they move the football thus far and why wouldn't they be two touchdowns on a field goal on their first three possessions they're playing so well right now the field goal probably feels like a disappointment [Applause] off the play fake here's Aman he's going to sling this deep downfield and he knocks the ball away and it falls incomplete offens is all over continue to be aggressive and most people never turn down a shot at a deep Ball but often times it attracts a little bit of extra attention and it did on that play and that one got knocked away so after the incompletion second and 10 from the 22 Smith up the middle and he'll get this up over the 25 to the 26 four yds the gain and it'll bring up a third down that second down play call was not to pick up the first down it was to accomplish what they did to get them into a manageable third down because they had incompletion on first down so they were behind the sticks so to speak they need to make up some ground and they did a m will throw they d it off complete to doret that's going to bring up fourth down only a gain of two there we can make this one pretty simple locked up all his progressions downfield forced to get it to his running back but how about the way they ran to the football and knocked him down to force a fourth down out now comes the Cowboys punter as he's on to punt for the first time [Applause] tonight and a fair catch signal for and taken just outside the 20 Y Line so a change of possession here on the punt and it'll be Charger football here as they take over [Applause] Rivers now to throw on first down he throws it on the move but can't connect as that falls incomplete no sense risking anything there on first down even though he's still in the pocket he had a receiver out to his side so just put that in a spot where the only people could make a play on it are the trainers and the coaches well done so after the incompletion on first now second and 10 throwing Rivers this throw incomplete nearly picked off and with his pedigree he doesn't drop many of those but third down coming up that was well played but that was also an example of a corner who understands his coverage realize he had support behind him and could be a little more aggressive in the shorter Zone and did exactly that knocking that pass away he's got his turn Target that's complete and he is going to have the Chargers first down as they're able to get the third down conversion yeah these are the types of plays they're going to need to hit on if they're going to get back into this game it hasn't been the greatest of first half but this is a nice throw here on third down and they keep the drive [Applause] going so from the 36 now first and 10 hand off left toet oh he ships past him and he's going to be out of bounds but not before he takes it inside the 40 78 yds for him on the ground so far tonight as he has been terrific in this first half thought they were going to have him down a lot earlier but he was able to shed that tackle shows the value of the weight room doesn't it shows the value of the attitude when you run the football don't go down easily break a few tackles gain some additional yardage we were remind you that coming up in 2 minutes time we'll hand you off to Orlando where Jonathan Coachman will have highlights and Analysis of this first half of action now a nice throw here right side he hauls it in touchdown La a great effort there 38 yds and the Chargers have got it back to where the score great quarter rout there not only able to catch it turn it up field and get into the End Zone it usually involves a little bit extra move doesn't it you got to get them thinking that you're moving to the middle of the field and you're breaking away to that corner boy that was well executed now the extra point try forth [Applause] coming he's got it and it's 2417 so that drive span five plays and it winds up with a touchdown for Los Angeles [Applause] this game back within a touchdown now as the kickoffs away and Beyond the 20 but not by much in fact just a yard pass there to the 21 Dallas offense set for this next drive as we eat closer and closer to intermission Charles remember last time out they punted they would love to get points here especially if this is going to be their final possession of the first half yeah and this is what close gam feel like because the pressure is on both sides but sometimes the pressure is a little bit higher on the team with the slight Edge because they're trying to hold on to that trying to increase it let's see how this one continues and he gets this one just shy of the 40 to Mark him down at the [Applause] 39 so the penalty Decline and they will keep the yardage on the completion and you can almost see him compartmentalize there throughout the route fought hard at the line of scrimmage a lot of hand checking throughout the route great job staying focused on the football and pulling it in through the contact good starting position for the Cowboys here as they come up first and 10 at the 39 yd line here's Aman heading to throw it and the Chargers Rush is going to get there down he goes the safety Blitz turns out to be a great call defensively as they sack him for a loss of nine oh free safety Blitz that can be a gamble but it proves fruitful there yeah you're exactly right about the gamble because often times the free safety is the last line of defense against a long pass and when he comes at the quarterback he'd better get home and make the play otherwise a big play could result for the offense sacks a growing theme in this first half this is second and long now Aman looking to throw Smith catches left side now the Cowboys going to burn the first of their timeouts as they'll stop it with a tick under a minute to go before half [Applause] so now third and 10 a big play to start the drive but nothing since from the shotgun Aman pass taken in by his big tight end and he's brought to the ground with another first down at the Chargers 39 21 yds there on third down that was good protection there no that was great protection there because it allowed him to lock in on his receiver although I think he was looking for his tight end on the corner route all the way nice connection there for a really nice gain now Aman on first down and this one complete to wh over the middle the Cowboys going to use their second timeout now so that means they're down to one remaining here as we head toward halftime [Applause] so here's a first and 10 now back in for quarter number three [Applause] [Applause] 3rd quarter the Chargers going to get the football first here in this second half and they Trail as we get back underway and this will not be returned so the second half begins with a Touchback out comes the Chargers as they'll go on offense now to start this third quarter and they're on the short end of the score board here Charles what adjustments if any do you think they need to make for the second half we're paraphrasing the gold medal hockey winning coach her Brooks I just say you continue to play your game throw the ball they had success doing it in the first half so make sure you keep getting the ball to your Playmakers a little bit more to the perimeter perhaps but above all play your game let throw right side is complete here on the first play of the drive 16 yds right off the bat with a first down they really love to get him into one-on-one opportunities and this is one way work him out of the slot and create a mismatch who's going to cover him Corner safety linebacker he's got a way to beat all of those positions rivers on first down and he will go down a cowboy sack the corner Blitz gets there as he goes down for a loss of seven I'd say it's not panic time yet but let's be honest about it empty possession here not what you're looking for when you're down a couple of scores absolutely not trying to start the second half off on the right foot unfortunately going to give the ball up now a second down throw for Rivers it's a short one here complete to his tight end call it a gain of six on the play and that's going to lead to a third and 11 completion was given up but that's why you play zone defense so you can have people around the ball when it's caught and you don't give up much much run after the catch this offense in desperate need of a conversion as they come up on third down to throw is Rivers firing quickly here and that's complete and they well past Midfield just a yard or two shy of the 40 he continues to deliver a first down here he had four catches in the first half and this one number five I like watching the wide receiver screen cuz it's a real teamwork play because guess what the guy catching the ball he'll get all the credit but how about the people have to block in front of him either fellow receivers or offensive linemen that makes that play a really nice timing play and sometimes it can break big so from Cowboy territory now here's first and 10 at the 41 toblin it up the middle and nothing much materializing there on the first down run he'll get a couple and that's it certainly a nice job there by the defense rallying to the football and getting him on the ground but I think the play gets made by the defensive front because if they can't get up field their job is to go ahead and get low almost get into a ball sometimes stack things up and make it difficult for the runner to find a hole here's Rivers going right side here and that's complete and he's going to have another first down here as the tackle made at the Cowboys 25 yd line the Chargers passing game rolling a bit here they've got another first boy everything clicking on this drive dve he's four for four now and that throw maybe the best of the bunch this offense is really humming and they pick up another first down on playaction Rivers a quick throw there is incomplete this already looks like they still have some fight in them on this series because it seemed like things were headed for the Red Zone but if this defense gets two more stops they can keep them out of that area an incomplete pass leads to second and 10 from the [Music] 25 Rivers drops this off to Tomlinson complete that helps the completion percentage but not much else and now it's third and 10 they couldn't get anything going there out on the right side in the flat of the Swing pass and didn't we have a discussion with their staff about wanting to get the backs more involved in the passing G huge emphasis for this game but obviously the defense had other plans and really made a nice play again it's rivers and it is caught and they've got it inside the 10 at the eight two catches in the first half now he's got a third here and it's good for a first and this is an offensive need of getting a few good things to happen here's one right here they've had their sh of struggles and key moments but that's a nice throw and nice work after the throw and they're set up now with a first and goal first and goal and they got to be thinking a chance chance to get right back into this football game they'll run tomblinson 88 yds for him on the ground now he has been a tough man to bring down all night it's larer been the Air Attack that's gotten him down here but now is where you start to lean on that running game that's a good pick up there on first and goal one man in the back field that's Gordon second and goal he'll get it up the middle and Gordon will work his way in touchdown Chargers a touchdown run there from a yard out and the Chargers have cut it back within a score and maybe that's the magic touch right there they didn't use him at all in the first half at least running the football but here they entrust him with some work down in the red zone and he responds one carry one touchdown the call is to go for one and kick the extra [Applause] point and the lead is down to a field goal now a pretty long drive that time 11 plays all told and it's capped off by a touchdown run coming from Melvin Gordon [Applause] so just a three-point game now as they send this one away [Music] [Applause] and a decent return out to the 27 yd line the Cowboys offense now they head out for their first possession of the second half and maybe some renewed pressure on this unit following the touchdown a moment ago it's back to a one- score game and because of that pressure because it's now a onore game they know this is where you need to slow the momentum change because otherwise that could overrun your team you've got to be careful right [Applause] here a first down carry for Smith he'll get a yard that's all as they get him down at the 28 well it's time for them to be good teammates right here and what I mean by that is possess the ball for a little while get at least two first downs give their defense chance to settle down a little bit after they give up a touchdown now second and nine to throw is Amman incomplete well you most certainly don't want to go three and out here and get the football right back because your friend old momentum he's wondering if he should change Sidelines about right now and if you don't convert here guess what he's going to make the trk to the opposite side and all of a sudden you you got a battle on your hands from the gun on third down is Aman and that will be incomplete and that's a really good job there defensively they went into this possession knowing that they needed to get a stop they in a tight ball game and they got it done great work to force the three and out got the football right back for their offense they've got to go to the sidelines feeling pretty good about themselves and encouraging their offensive mates to get some points on fourth down the punt team is on as this is sent away here's Allen call it a 48 yd punt give them nine though on the return and it will be first and 10 as they take over now the Chargers offensive unit ready to see what they can do here a long drive last time out for this offense Charles if you remember they started basically in the shadows of their own End Zone marched it down the field and a lot of that was through the passing game and partner as a former defensive back I'm having almost a physical IAL reaction watching what's happening right now but let's give credit words to because they've done an excellent job moving the ball through the air secondary getting picked apart pass by pass obviously they need to make some adjustments there on the back end and because offensively we know that they're not going to be shy about throwing that football just a yard on the first down carry so it's second and nine that felt like a trap because it looked to me like the opposing front was on that play from the GetGo they had everyone crashing the ball carrier before he even made the line and they hold him to just a yard they go again to Tomlinson and they take him down losing yardage back at the 27 that's a big loss of three and it brings up third down that was well played there defensively two tight ends in the formation which essentially gave him seven blockers up front hard to imagine with all that size and beef that they could let a tackler through but that's exactly what happened a loss resulted on third down rivers and a quick throw here that's complete just a gain of a couple there and that's going to bring up a fourth down partner I think that completion takes the definition of Dink and dunk to a different level doesn't it it does and the defense was right there kind of played into their [Applause] hands on is the Chargers punter now as he'll come on to kick this one away [Applause] this is brought in at the 21 6yd return after a punt of 48 and the Cowboys will take over the football with a first and 10 and now Dallas get set to take the field and our game's hit a little bit of a lull here a little bit of a snag punts on back-to- back drives and Old School coaches don't necessarily mind that didn't turn it over right didn't create a big play for the other team right now what you're looking for is can you gain an advantage in field position and that's what both teams are seeking right now yeah they'll be seeking to gain that Advantage here on this drive they'll start on the ground here on first down and he'll get this up just shy of the 30 oh that's a real nice job there by the defensive front they just engaged and held their ground but how about the guy who made the play we often talk about whether they take a good first step or not many times you just don't take any step just get your feet moving get your body going and then once he made the read he was able to make the play on second down Aman had his hands on it but dropped it the rookie making a little bit of a rookie mistake third down and he's certainly not a guy that drops that football very often indeed because that's a bit of a surprise I know he's in the middle of some traffic and people bodies all around him but he usually has the focus to haul that one in now Aman Chargers able to get the Press pressure and bring him down and the defense coming through on third down a loss of seven to bring up fourth like how they started the third quarter here they force a punt on the first drive and after this sack it looks like they'll be forcing another one as well absolutely maybe got their second win coming out of the locker room averaging 50 yds of boot so far as this one's away and a fair catch signal for and taken successfully so possession goes over here on the punt and out will come the offense as they take over the Chargers ready to take over last series for him a little disappointing forced a punt and now they'll try to do better here and Come Away with some points as they begin this drive first and 10 they'll start this drive out out on the ground trying to run inside but nothing there no gain on the play it'll be second down his carries tonight they're getting up there so maybe one of those every now and then is understandable I would agree with that understandable every now and then sometimes you come back and you fake it to him and go play action but other times you say okay they got him on that one we'll come back to him in another carry again it's Tomlinson and they're able to get this one across the Third 35 98 yd rushing for him now as he's carried it 16 times he continues to be effective running the football a big reason that they have the lead and I love one of the quotes that I read about him where he said of himself I love it when a team just hops on my back and I just carry him [Applause] along they'll hand this to Tolson running right and he's going to be stopped up quickly here just a yard up to the 39 I think if we put together a job description for a middle linebacker we would start with being able to hold down things in the middle of the line of scrimmage and be able to take on blockers but how about the guys who can go sideline to sideline and make plays love a guy that can do that we saw a perfect example of it right there they'll try to throw here rivers and that one complete downfield to Allen and he is out of bounds but not before inside the 30 they'll get 34 yds there well this game has certainly had no shortage of offense both teams have been revved up from the start and here's yet another big play boy both defense have just got to be dragging out there because they've been run ragged [Applause] throughout so now then the big play has them all the way inside the 30 now first and 10 it's a give running left Tomlinson and he tried to bounce it outside but they'll stop him behind the line officially it's a one yd loss that's going to bring up second and 11 I like the strategy extra tight ends extra beef they want to run the football but that means they probably want to run it inside if you get strung out on the perimeter you're in Peril yeah we saw the result negative yardage Rivers now on second down oh he'll want that back incomplete he doesn't drop too many in that department third down so much of this game is focus and concentration and whenever I see guys running the in route I know that in the back of their mind they're always wondering who's lurking inside that might put a big hit on them as they try and catch the ball now Rivers he's going to go up top for the end zone and that will be in in complete well they weren't scared to let it fly but it falls to the ground and brings up fourth down after what they faced during this game where they've given up a ton of yards downfield that has to be a measure of Revenge right there for the secondary they've been shredded throughout the game and finally forced an incompletion and this one looks good it is good right down the pipe and that's going to tie the ball game at 27 all so give him three on that drive you know normally you'd say we'll take it but the way points have been flying around it feels like a little bit of a let down yeah you just have to wonder are field goals going to be enough because as you pointed out the way touchdowns have been scored does kicking a field goal actually put you at a disadvantage the rest of the [Applause] way boy hard to ask for a better game thus far 27 a piece is our score as the kicks away this taken in at the goal line and he won't quite make it to the 25 Dallas offense set for this next Drive these guys definitely hoping for a better showing than their last appearance they couldn't really even move the football much beyond the Shadows of their own goal post Charles we'll see if they can get a better more sustained drive going here yeah and every team that we ever talk to says exact same thing when you start a drive from that deep in your own territory the goal is a minimum of at least two first downs because even if you have to punt then you change the field position right you flip the field a little bit they didn't get that done this time they want bring together a nice drive and help themselves out and the result here a pick up of eight leaves him with two to go on second down what a way to start a drive an excellent run a tone Setter and now if you want to take a shot on second down and go play AC action and make it look like the same exact play and throw it over the top you can do so because you've established the run in a big way staying on the ground this time it's Smith and he is met at the line of scrimmage and he goes down right there he got maybe a half yard at most but officially they'll be left with a third and two and he got off the end there very quickly to make that play yeah that was almost like the bullet train wasn't it I mean just zoom quick quick quick and what a terrific play holding them to No Gain Aman now off the boot leg under a heavy rush and down he goes the safety Blitz staged to Perfection that time as they sack him for a loss of [Applause] six before they can get the punt away whistles as we've come to the end of the Third quarter of action we'll return with more after this this is the NFL and it's on EA Sports back now at Sofi stadium in 4th quarter Englewood all even as we get ready to start the fourth and he'll get credit for putting him inside the 20 as the fair catch is made right at about the 19 yd line the Chargers getting set to go excellent job by their defense to force the punt and provide them with this opportunity all tied in the fourth [Applause] quarter on First and 10 Rivers oh the ball comes out on the hit but they'll say it's incomplete you can tell they wanted to get that ball downfield but they had nothing working in the secondary so he dropped it off to the running back that one ended up incomplete after the incompletion here's second and 10 from the 20 rivers to throw it well so far on this drive they've done some good work they forc incompletions on first and second down bring up third and 10 that brings up the big question do they bring pressure or do they play coverage on this down the offense on third down tonight they've converted seven times and could use another right now this is third and 10 and Allen's got it and they're going to get this Beyond 40 before he's taken down a nice pick up of 23 on the third down conversion and partner in a tie game in the fourth quarter you and I both know in the NFL that's when you lean on your stars and he came through with a nice catch right [Applause] [Music] there now movement up front I think they're going to get one of the charger linemen maybe anticipating a blitz and they jumped yeah and if we saw it you know that they saw it the bad guys might have been coming on that play had to pick them up and they jumped the full start backs him up five first and 15 they'll throw again rivers over the middle and it's incomplete anytime a Ball's thrown in the middle of the field that's popped up in the air I expect someone to catch it doesn't matter whether it's offense or defense because there's usually a great amount of bodies in that part the field in this case no one came up with it so they'll come up after the incompletion for second down now Rivers he's got Allen and they've got it well across Midfield down to the 40 before it's all said and done 22 yds there a first down and passing yardage wise now up over 350 in this game pretty nice performance definitely that which usually means you're putting a lot of pressure pressure on guys trying to cover if you're a defensive back and they put over 350 yards on you you've had a long day the key to everything if you're doing it without throwing interceptions or turning the ball over he finds his Target Allen and finally down he goes as they work it inside the 10 to the seven an excellent pick up of 34 yds talk about a momentum shifter right there tie game fourth quarter these are play that win you games and now defensively the question becomes how do you respond now a chance to make that big play really hurt it's first and goal just outside the five they'll go up the gut with Tomlinson he gets him a little bit closer he takes it from the six inside the five to the four not a whole lot there on first and goal and that's what you're looking for defensively you'll certainly live with given up just a yard or two in this situation second and goal from inside the five again Tomlinson and he'll be stopped up short as the tackle is made at about the three a minimal gain there on the eighth play of the drive I have to laugh a little bit because he actually handed it off I thought with the two touchdown passes he's thrown in this one already he'd go ahead and fling and try and get a third one yeah now from this spot on third down I think he'd probably throw here yeah I think there's any question about it they won't even send in a running play here I don't believe I think they go ahead and and trouble and he'll go down back at the 12 disastrous outcome there on Third and goal they lose nine yds on the sack defense went 34 they got some push from the inside and this is something in a 34 you don't nor get because the nose tackle who got the sack he's usually responsible or ends up getting double teamed and sometimes triple team how about him working his way back and putting the big guy on the ground so here we go maybe the biggest kick of the game forthcoming this to break our fourth quarter tie and his kick is right there it's good and they have taken the lead here in the fourth quarter so the drive here ends with a field goal it does give him the lead but this one's still certainly a long ways from over it definitely puts a lot of pressure on your defense to hold the lead right they're happy to have it and happy to be out there trying to do so but I know as a former player in the back of their mind they're thinking why don't you score the touchdown and seal this thing out is the kickoff unit as they run up and send this one [Applause] away and he'll be brought down right on the chalk of the 20 possession of the football going back to the Cowboys and now they find themselves trailing following the field goal still a good amount of time in this fourth quarter but this drive very well could determine the outcome of this ball game [Applause] they'll start on the ground here on first down and he'll be brought down right at the 30 here give him 10 yards on the pickup and it'll be second and very short on any explosive run you can almost feel the ground shaking and that's from the offensive lineman creating space for their Runners I had an Old Coach tell me before that he always told his runners run around the offensive line in pregame get used to the ground shaking so you don't trip and fall when it happens in a game now Aman looking to throw he finds Smith out of the back field and he gets this up to the 34 out of bounds there four yds the pickup first down [Applause] a give to Smith out of the gun they'll get it across the 35 it'll be second down well from an offensive perspective that was a tough run because he only picked up three yards let's flip it over to the defensive side they now have the advantage three three yd gains that means they're punting the ball likely on fourth down that's what you're looking for when you're playing defense am M will throw and his throw is incomplete I think that's a big time play there because the slant route is really hard to cover because the timing is so quick but able to see it diagnose it and get to the football that's why he's able to bat it away they head to the line facing a third and seven following the incompletion on second down now it's Aman and this pass broken up excellent coverage there on third down as that was not an easy one to hold on to well how about the coverage we just saw him break out on third down dime defense blanketed the field with extra defensive backs and speed unable to find an open hole to complete that pass averaging over 50 yds a punt so far as this one's away calls for the fair catch makes the fair catch just inside the 15 ydd line so out come the Chargers their defense got the Stop Force the punt and now you really start to monitor the clock as they nurse this slim lead a first down throw here for rivers that one's complete to Tomlinson and he is going to lose yardage here he was unable to shake free there and they'll cover him for a loss of a yard well they tried to swing it out left into the flat complete but really nice open field tackling and they played that one like a great boxer they were on their toes on that one they weren't back on their heels reacting to the play no they saw it came right for it and made a nice tackle for lost yardage [Music] and that false start penalty certainly not helping their cause here second down and long rivers now well partner guaranteed they approach this play with the idea of making up ground to make third down manageable unfortunately with that incompletion right back where they started on the last snap now they need a big third down play in order to pick up the yardage needed an incomplete pass on that last play and that means they'll need to come up with something here on third down Rivers look in the middle of the field and he's got him man complete and they're going to get this beyond the 40 before he's taken down how about that they webble the storm of third and 17 to pick up the first a very nice job right there working the middle of the field able to create some separation and then utilize it to not just make the catch but turn up field once he got the ball in his hands just like that out of danger and up past the 40 now for first and 10 playaction now Rivers swinging this ball out here to Tom wion it'll go down as a gain of six and that'll make it second down just about every quarterback is trained to really look downfield first before you come back and make a nice safe throw and in this case that's exactly what he did found his running back let him create some space and it turned out to be a nice play for the offense now a toss right this is Tomlinson and for a second straight play that cowboy defense gets him to the ground behind the line of scrimmage that's going to go down as a loss of five and it brings up third down now obviously that's some good work there defensively being able to stop them and bring it up a key third down but if you're on the offensive side of the ball There's an opportunity because I know what defensive guys are thinking right now just stop them get to the ball that and the Cowboys pressure gets there this time for the sack the corner Blitz gets there as he goes down for a loss of seven a CD a little bit of feast famine for him he's had some success throwing the football but also now he's been sacked four times yeah you just mentioned the four sacks but you're right he has managed to hang in there and make plays at times his offensive line they've got to figure it out and pick things up and give him more opportunities and he has to help them by getting rid of the ball a little bit quicker as well it'll be a 47 yd punt with a net of 40 following a seven yd return and now Dallas gets set to take the field their defense accomplished step one of the Mission they forc the punt now they'll look to erase that deficit and take a fourth quarter [Applause] lead they start on the ground with ellien and he'll take it forward for about five up to the 28 yd line that's a really good gain right there they pick up five yards halfway to a first down the only problem now in the Huddle everyone's going to want to touch the football be a lot of chattering now because they've seen that they can move the line of scrimmage from the 28 it's second and Five Oh They'll run it here on the Jet Sweep oh and this one may need to go back to the drawing board he's going to be swallowed up right away it'll go down as a 2yd loss and it brings up a third down as a wide out when you take that hand off and you're coming around the edge you're expecting to see nothing but empty space in front of you but if not well things can go south in a hurry and that's exactly what we saw on that play with a loss over the middle to Smith and he will have a Cowboys first down as they're able to get the third down conversion well they certainly had success throughout this contest getting him the ball in the passing game and there he picks up another first down whatever they saw going into this one they've been able to capitalize on it and no adjustment has been made to take it away so signs of life and what's been a dormant offense in this second half here's first and 10 inside handoff Smith trying to find a lane but in instead he'll get back to the line of scrimmage and no more officially no gain on the play and it's second down and as a defensive end getting off the ball quickly swarming to the football making a tackle that's what we saw right there yeah that's what their job is and really a lot of the time they have to throttle back a little bit in the Run game because you know those defensive ends they're like in a sprinter stance they're just headed straight for the quarterback that was good recognition on that play to hold him to No Gain they try to throw on second down but this is incomplete and now offensively it's third and 10 and I'm just thinking to myself actors always say what's my motivation before a big scene right now the play caller is thinking what have I done before that's worked well that I can go to right now yeah cuz they were pretty successful in the first half scoring points haven't done anything so far here in the second half and now the third down throw incomplete as well out now comes the cowboys pter he's been terrific so [Applause] far and no return on this one as the fair catch is signal for and taken the LA offense ready for this next possession obviously not the intended goal last Drive they had to punt the football but still they've got the lead here and now a chance to add on to that lead if they can get points on this drive first and 10 upcoming now Tomlinson on First and 10 and he's taken down but not before he gets this across the 25 yd line a gain of 11 to kick off the drive and it's a quick first down no doubt those are the types of carries they're looking for here Charles the lead in the fourth quarter this is when coaches that have a reliable running game they breathe a little easier on the sideline yeah they love the idea that they can take the air out of the football at this point of the game that means they're really counting on that offensive line counting on the runners taking care of the football because you're going to tell your quarterback hey no time to be a hero we're not going to throw it here just eat up that clock and if you have the ball they can't score after the incomplete pass here now is second and 10 a give up the middle to Tomlinson and now right out of the two-minute break we'll get a timeout used defensively with a minute 56 to go [Applause] do this is a big third down and you'd have to think we'd see a timeout right away if they can't stop him here they'll run again and he'll take this one up close to the 25 yd line the Cowboys going to use their second timeout now that'll leave them with just one remaining in this fourth quarter of play on is the Chargers punter now as he's on here to putt it away this is fielded at the 27 it's a 45 yd punt six yds on the return so now the Cowboys down by a field goal a minute 45 to play they need at minimum three point out of this as they come up first and [Applause] 10 they'll look to throw going to throw right side here complete and he'll be out of bounds after getting this one across the 40 it didn't check off every box but the most important one got the clock stopped getting out of bounds they may be a little short of the first down but I thought that was the key they come up now on second and two he's back to throw now a quick throw there but it's going to be incomplete so he's unable to complete it there and just not the game that you would expect from him he's been off the mark really start to finish yeah it makes you wonder what exactly going on is he a little bit dinged up here or is he just off just by a bit maybe he can get it back in this situation he'll need [Applause] to back to throw pass taken in by his big tight end and he will have a Cowboys first down as they're able to get the third down conversion nice well coached a team that understands what's going on they still have time to work the middle of the field as they just did there just the one timeout remaining as they try to navigate this two-minute drill first and 10 a throw over the middle taken in that completion helps out in a nice way now they can take a little bit more time but guess what they've got to make sure on their throws that they see it open not just anticipate it here comes second down at five he'll look to throw and he'll go right back to lamb and he's brought to the ground with another first down at the Chargers 27 yd line and here we are in the fourth quarter partner and watch him drive for what would be a go-ahead touchdown and you and I both know this is where you need a quarterback who can keep his cool back there not just for himself but to keep the rest of the team relaxed [Applause] too back to throw and he's got it it's caught for a touchdown and they have taken the lead here in the final seconds what an outstanding drive right there to take the lead and also Charles didn't leave their opposition with a whole lot of time on the clock yeah I like the way that you're viewing this because they did a tremendous job to put themselves in a position to win but they can't celebrate just yet they've got a clamp down on any big plays and force them to use up those timeouts without making any Headway extra point attempt to follow [Applause] here and it would appear they're going to get out of here with a come from behind victory that time a six-play drive and it culminates in a Dallas touchdown Bailey now to kick it away after the touchdown and he'll get it up past the 20 to about the 22 [Applause] here's first and [Music] 10 rivers to throw and that'll be incomplete with 11 seconds remaining now probably time for two more shots and ideally they'd like to get to Midfield or so so they have a chance at a Hail Mary on the final play Here Comes second down here's Rivers incomplete and we're down to 8 seconds now now we're in the situation where the quarterback's got to take full charge of his Hub got to totally command it make sure all eyes are on him all focus is locked in going to call multiple plays and go over different situations and scenarios to make sure everyone is on the same page this definitely four down territory at this point but a
