Titans HC sets week 1 expectations for Will Levis's week 1 debut

[Music] welcome into a toz sports prime time on this Tuesday September the 3 Happy game week to all of you who celebrate we are fired up to be back from the long Labor Day weekend and to be diving into a week one opponent with you guys tonight we're going to talk about setting the expectations for will Lev's week one debut we are also going to talk about depth on defense and a gone viral video is how the proceedings will conclude there are a lot of different things that Brian Callahan had to say yesterday at his press conference obviously we've had a few more days to resonate on those things and to dive into exactly what the most important stuff the head coach had to say ahead of his first actual NFL game first regular season game of which he said he had more butterflies than he expected talking about Brian Callahan so we'll get into will Levis and that side of things and pivot to defense like I mentioned and we'll all enjoy these things together because it's football baby it's back there's a crispness to the air it's no longer 9,000 degrees outside in Middle Tennessee if you're here you know it uh if you're out of state I hope that you are in a cooler place than what Nashville has been in the last couple of months basically but we have finally made it to week one of the NFL season there will be an NFL game two nights from tonight and then of course the Titans will travel to Chicago I'll be in Chicago I'm pretty sure Sam is gonna be in Chicago that would make a lot of sense because that's where Sam's from so we will have a lot of good coverage for you from AD toz Sports and we will look forward to that but in the meantime we got to talk about this game and get you ready and set expectations for will Levis in his week one debut it's not an NFL debut but his week one debut as Undisputed Titan starter for the foreseeable future and what all that entails under a new head coach B friend says Buck I'm thinking of betting the line for this game four and a half for the Titans is this a good bet do you think four and a half is a big number uh it's the Bears minus four and a half at home I am inclined to always you know look at a point spread bigger than three in the NFL and want to to take the points in that situation but you know I don't gamble on the NFL so I probably uh I would probably leave it up to your discretion I would wait before I place my bets though to see who is officially in and out of this game because de DeAndre Hopkins Jamal Adams those guys are probably going to be questionable when the first injury report comes out tomorrow uh and I would probably want a little more clarity at least on the Hopkins side of things before I put any money down on one side or the other let's go ahead and get into it because a lot of you guys have this entire offseason has been about think about it the last six months what have we talked about we have talked exhaustively about Calvin redley Lloyd cushenberry Brian Callahan Bill Callahan JC leam all the different things at least on the offensive side of the football that have been brought in to supplement this quarterback and to help him achieve now what do we know about will Levis after six starts in the NFL last year a three and excuse me nine starts in the NFL last year a three and six record in those nine games playing on a much much wor football team well we know that too often it was either not getting completed or going 50 50 yards through the air there was really no in between his yards per completion last year was 12 which is outrageous he needs to have a uh he can manage a few uh a few less yards per completion if he's being a more efficient version of will Levis which is of course what Brian Callahan is here to do we know that Calvin Ridley DeAndre Hopkins Tyler boydd are a really nice colle ction of wide receivers that's probably the best one through three wide receiver set that you have had in 20 heading into 26 Seasons this will be the 26th season of Tennessee Titans football in the Titans era it's probably the best one through three that you've had you've got depth at several positions which is a lovely thing to experience after one not having good talent on your roster to begin with and two not having depth to uh supplement that bad talent that you had on your roster the cupboard has been bare for least the past two seasons you've regenerated a lot of that not all of it but you are at least a meaningfully competitive football team and now you get to see it in real time so how much be how much further Beyond meaningfully competitive and what I say when I mean meaningfully competitive is I think this team is good enough to be in the hunt for a playoff spot I don't know if they're going to make the playoffs we'll talk about uh we have talked a little bit about where I think they'll finish in the AFC South you know that I picked them third in the AFC South uh when we did that show last week and with Will Levis I think that there is a degree of it watching him in those nine games last year where he did the thing that so often you wanted tanah Hill to do now he did it in a season that was feudal but he did it and that is something that you can build upon what am I talking about well something that comes up with tanah Hill a lot at least during his time well I mean I would I would argue throughout the course of his entire career how much further above what the team around him provides is he able to elevate the situation and more often than not the answer was occasionally but not near enough to get you over the hump of what it is that you need your quarterback to be able to facilitate will Levis comes in for Ryan tanah Hill last year now he's much younger his body has taken many many less hits although damned if Will Levis isn't trying to take as many hits as Ryan tanah Hill did during his career and he's coming in to provide juice fresh energy and a fresh skill set with a much higher ceiling than Ryan tanah Hill who was a former first round pick himself a higher draft pedigree than Ryan tanah Hill but there's no disputing that will Levis has a higher traits ceiling than what it is that tanah Hill had as a former first round draft pick and that just speaks to the evolution of the position as much as anything else but what will Levis did coming in for Ryan tanah Hill leaving with the high ankle sprain in the Baltimore Ravens game in London last year was he elevated the team that was still a [ __ ] team but he had no business winning three games with that [ __ ] team the way that he did yeah he lost six yeah they were terrible yeah they went six and 11 down the stretch but you still saw evidence that he was capable of elevating the surrounding Parts even though the surrounding parts were nothing you know nothing special nothing to uh plenty to turn your nose up at and a lot of these guys um you know who ended up on other rosters in training camp this off season ultimately were a lot of the dudes who ended up getting cut on those respective rosters around the league by the way Kyle Phillips picked up by the Eagles today which I'm sure they won't keep him healthy at all and that live to haunt you in some form or fashion but you don't have to talk about that tonight because the Vibes are high and we're talking about will Levis so with everything that's going on around will Levis and man I I mean I love the city of Chicago for about four months of the year for four months of the year it is the best city in the country and then after that it's cold the rest of the time and I can't deal with with their weather but week one at Chicago in Soldier Field with Caleb Williams and crazed bear fans man I think it's going to be an excellent atmosphere for those of you who are attending so uh we'll be sure to take plenty of pictures on social media and post uh things from the locker room and the atmosphere and everything else Lewis so don't worry we've got you covered even if you can't be there we'll try and make you feel like you're there Rooney says I say three touchdowns over 300 yards passing so are we talking three total touchdowns we are we talking that you know maybe you sneaking OD or you uh not sneaking odd but you have a QB sneak in there are you talking about Rush total touchdowns rushing touchdowns included you think this man is coming out three passing touchdowns over 300 passing yards in week one of the NFL season those are lofty expectations I will say um Devon Mills going a bit more reasonable but he does say multiple touchdown passes 230 yards two touchdowns and just take what the defense gives you be efficient Brandon says Levis throws for two and rushes for one 280 yards and the Titans get the W guys I mean I I I love I love this for you I love that you are this kind of optimistic um but that seems you know maybe I'm the one who's eating crow when we do the prime time show from Chicago on Sunday night maybe maybe I'm the one who's who's way too low on the situation but I mean to say that he's going to come out there guns blazing he did it in his season debut so perhaps it is not completely Unthinkable but it would be pretty crazy to me if Will Levis came out in week one with multiple passing touchdowns in a new offense with all manner of new players around him um and you know slinging it that way especially the kind of yardage totals that you're talking about will Levis had uh two games two games in 2023 where he threw multiple touchdown passes his debut against Atlanta and he threw two touchdown passes in the loss against Jacksonville it was a 34-4 loss in those touchdowns in week what was that week 10 they felt a bit like garbage time touchdown so um will Levis has only thrown touchdowns multiple touchdowns in a game of consequence in a game that you actually had a chance to win one time because the Jags game was of course a blowout and you uh you understand how how they were trying to chase and get back in that and that the stat this box score does not necessarily lend itself to you know on the field success 250 yards says Jack Ripper one interception Jonathan erdle says 21 of 29 a very high completion percentage 289 two touchdowns five rushes for 37 yards Titans win 30 to 20 man you guys think there's going to be points going to be yards doesn't sound like there's going to be a lot of Defense in this game Josh Parnell says we need you to be optimistic and jump on the Titan train Buck uh not in week one you're gonna need to make a Believer out of me uh I don't think that's unfair because I've covered a lot of bad football I've seen a lot of weak ones I've seen a lot of weak ones that don't matter whether that's good bad or indifferent to what the rest of the season ends up being so it's talk to me in October over and then I'll tell you how optimistic or pessimistic I am about your football team but I want to see at least four games to come up with a representative sample size of what the offense looks like how consistent Levis is how consistent the pieces around him are and what the defense is actually going to be able to do because the defense is kind of the biggest variable of all of this well maybe not Levis I guess is the biggest variable of all of this but the defense has plenty of questions that I think that they've done well to kind of find the answers to in the offseason but how the whole thing comes together which we'll talk about with Ernest Jones a little later remains to be seen you're going to hear from Brian Callahan on will Levon setting his expectations and then I'll give you mine here in just a second right after I remind you I saw something that was not very funny by B French but was meant uh just with cruelty intended for Titans fans demeanor just these last couple of weeks as The Season's gotten closer have you've seen his intensity dial up a little bit or is he kind to stay steady I think uh you guys are familiar with the you know like when you look at a duck on the water like he's I'm sure internally he's incredibly excited but he's done a really good job of of staying pretty consistent and Cal in his approach so I know will well enough to know that he's very excited to go play um but the key part of that too is is managing those emotions and that's both in the excitement and in and when things go wrong is being able to stay consistent enough so you can you can bounce back or um continue on from from a good play or a bad play sort of in the same manner and so he's really improved in that regard I think when you just watch him talk to people and you watch his interactions with people he's a much more confident um calm collected presence than maybe he's been um but trust me I I know what's I know what's inside of of him and and I'm sure it's it's his feet are moving as fast as hell under the water right now so I know he's ready to roll so that's Brian Callan speaking about will Levis and and whether where he is at this moment in time and and you know you've seen that from Will right he's he's much more measured at press conferences he's trying to be more in in control of his emotions and in his decision making which of course is impacted in the game he doesn't make great decisions all the time that's something that they're trying to hone trying to find- tune right there is a degree of variance to his game that you're trying to limit we'll say because he has the ability to be I'm not going to say special but he has the ability to be a top half of the league starting NFL quarterback I genuinely do believe that I would buy low on the will Lis stock heading into the season because I do think not just because of him because I do think that the Brian Callahan thing matters I think the Bill Callahan thing matters a lot and I think that they've done enough to to put him in a position to succeed beyond what he was capable of doing last year so there is legitimate support from the coaching staff in ways that are meaningful with a very quarter back specific staff and from the roster that they have done well to retool in this offseason and really tear down to the studs more than just kind of retool and Tinker with um what are my expectations of will Levis I think that will Levis is going to come out there and try and manage the situation I think that they are going to lean heavily on their running game I think that will Levis is going to complete and I don't know how many passes he'll attempt but I'll say that Levis is going to have just shy of a 70% uh completion uh is going to complete just just shy of 70% of his passes I'll put him at you know 69 and change we'll see what that looks like I don't think that he's going to throw a passing touchdown I think there's going to be rushing touchdowns in this game I think that he is going to do his best to matriculate the ball down the field even though when people say matriculate the ball down the field it's not necessarily the best word use of the word matriculate but it's one that we use pretty commonly in in NFL discussions I think that he is going to prioritize efficiency over the flash that some of you guys are looking for here I don't think he needs to have gy touchdown numbers if he throws one to passing touchdown and he doesn't throw a pick success if he you know throws for 210 yards instead of 300 plus the way that you guys were saying but he manages the game well success if they are in control of the situation if they run the air out of the ball because this is an offense that's G to run the football I think that a lot of people are just assuming or just kind of resign the idea to oh Derrick Henry's gone we're passing 40 times a game now no no no that's not what this offense is if you watch Cincinnati and see what they did with Joe Mixon Joe mixon's a volume Ball Carrier I think that Tony Pard is going to get a pretty considerable workload on Sunday up north and I think ultimately that you are prioritizing that I would prefer to see efficienc over Flash from will Lis I don't need him to go out there and try and win the game himself I need him to do enough to make sure that they that they experience success as a team and he does not put them in position to potentially jeopardize that picks inside your own 20 yard line that a defensive lineman from Miami is running back and all of a sudden you're diving at him to try and stop him from getting the endzone to prevent a pick six you ultimately don't you hit the defensive lineman you bounce off of them you end up in a heap of yourself and the lineman scores the touchdown anyway like the Dolphins game right make good decisions put your team in position to have success by nature of your decision making take the easy answers to the test that the offense provides to you that to me is preferable to flash and you know big numbers high high passing yardage totals volume touchdown multiple touchdowns I just want to see them do the thing I want to see them stay ahead of the sticks I want to see them not uh I almost cussed not mess around and find out with penalties on the offensive line pre- snap penalties that are going to put them in third and six plus situations the way that last year's offensive line did and I want to see Levis continue to do what he's done in the preseason which is kind of be boring like be a little boring be you know make the plays that are there for you to make because I thought he did well with that especially in the screen game the play action game against the Saints like the balance that they had there like the different looks that they had there and I know that they're going to further expand the Playbook once they get into regular season play because they won't be trying to you know hide things in the preseason like they were so ultimately I think uh Brandon bottom says Buck 280 yards is 70 yards a quarter I think that's doable uh sure anything is doable theoretically doable versus what you want to see from him what you realistically should expect from him that can be your expectation my bar is a lot lower for a quarterback that went three and six and looked like he was you know like like that duck with his feet below the water paddling his ass off and trying to remain calm above the surface I want to see him be able to get through a game calmly relatively cleanly and make good decisions while doing it I don't need all the statistical box score stuffing stuff that's going to make you feel better maybe about your quarterback situation than you actually should the four touchdowns against Atlanta is great right doing it in the Oilers uniforms is excellent making it your NFL debut debut that's a weird way to say debut um is something that only I want to say three other if maybe maybe only two other NFL quarterbacks if I remember correctly Marcus marota being one of them there's only a handful of NFL quarterbacks that have ever done in their first game what will Lis did and I don't care anymore about the first game because he played eight other games after that and I saw a bunch of up and down [ __ ] that I'd like to see eliminated in game one so that's my perspective on how this thing uh on on what I want to see from him what my expectations for him are and I think if he exceeds that great and then we can talk about it on Sunday night from Soldier Field um Kazuma on YouTube says if local media are down on this team then no wonder everybody else is almost like they forgot we improved a whole bunch guess I shouldn't even tune in this season well um that's a bit whiny you're being a baby about it because all we've done is tell you what a great job your football team did putting the [ __ ] back together over the course of the past six months so you're going to have to be a little tougher you're going to have to have a little thicker skin you're gonna have to manage it because it's not all going to go perfectly and all your and your honeymoon phase thank God your honeymoon phase is over I want I want to actually learn what your football team is rather than you know all all of this stuff that we're talking about in principle oh the team looks good on paper and by the way it does look good on paper but like the kick rocks with the honeymoon face let's play football and actually F figure out what the 2024 Titans are going to be uh so if you're here to complain about oh the local media isn't giving us enough respect no one the national media doesn't care about us wa I didn't give a [ __ ] about that all right you're gonna be okay grow up and if you want to watch your football team watch your football team if you're gonna let other people's opinions about your football team impact your viewing experience then again I would say be tougher uh so let's keep it moving and let's talk about the defensive side of the ball because we've set expectations for will Levis now let's talk about the defense which has as this because we're giving too much oxygen to it says the guy who has us is third in the division by Year's End guess what you finished fourth if you're third you're doing I I just held up four trying to indicate three bad math by me if you finished third that means you did better than you did last year you're not gonna win the Super Bowl in just one off season calm down quit your bitching and hang on because your season hasn't even started yet you're already whining I can't stand that can I stand that anyway watch the tapee improve you're gonna you're going to do better next time anyway so biggest takeaway from the week one depth chart what do you have I think that there's a couple of different things that you can look at but the biggest one that stands out is the linebacker situation you just traded for Ernest Jones IV from the Los Angeles Rams you have a situation where Jack Gibbons and kenth Murray are slated as your week one starters so Ernest Jones is here how soon can he take over Titans fans know how quickly can I get Jack Gibbons off the field and it's no I mean it's not an outright knock on Jack Gibbons but Ernest Jones projects as the better player if he can get up to speed in your defense in time so how long's it going to take him to get up to speed in in the defense we ask Brian Callahan about that yesterday a few days now and obviously who's that Ernest yeah and had the weekend to kind of get caught up practice gamesday what does he have to show you or tell you to know that he's ready to go and be the guy on Sunday yeah he's got to be ready to to play I think he's you know he's going to be he's going to be up and ready to roll on game day and so um his role will expand as as quickly as as he expands it himself I mean he's going to have to learn a system it's different than what he came from um he's going to have to be denard's got to be confident in his ability to know what to do when to do it so uh it'll be a process but he's a pro so I don't I don't anticipate him taking too long and he's been around obviously for a little bit of time now to at the very least get the basics down um but there's a a communication piece there's a um there's a knowledge piece and then there's the execution part which we all know he can execute it's just a matter of learning a new language I think and so that might take two days it might take two weeks it's kind of up to him and how fast he can pick it up travel what's your travel so that is Brian Callahan talking about Ernest Jones I fourth he's GNA get more opportunity as he earns them as he gets more comfortable in the defense and as you heard Brian callian say he's going to be up and ready to roll in Chicago so he's going to play in Chicago they're not going to have him on their 46 Manon game day roster without him having some kind of a role Now is it going to be is it going to be you know 85% of the defensive snaps on Sunday when we get the uh the game book after the fact doesn't sound like it and nor do I think Titans fans I I don't know I don't know what you guys expected when you traded for an Jones if you thought all right week one right away put him in there he's better than Gibbons I do think he's going to be he's going to end up being an upgrade over Gibbons I think he's an upgrade over aiz alare honestly I think he's a better version of alsare but with uh with him right now he's playing an entirely different style of Defense than he was in Los Angeles he's working with a new coaching staff new terminology and he just got here about a week ago so I think that if he plays if he plays 30% of the defensive snaps that would be a fair amount on Sunday and I I have to imagine that they're going to have a couple of different packages a couple of different looks depending on game situation down and distance what have you pressure packages and things like that because he is an excellent rusher I have to imagine that they're going to have a plan in place some looks in place for him to participate right away get his feet wet get used to you know get used to being out there on the field with the rest of them because Gibbons and Murray have played next to each other all preseason long now with h well I guess in two preseason games right they didn't play in the second preseason game but you want to give him that time to get acclimated to get comfortable to get to get used to the communication process and how it might be different from LA and I don't think that he I don't think that he has to um you know I don't think that it's critical that you have him out there in week one now I do think that the Bears offensive coordinator is going to test you over the middle of the defense I think they're going to see Jack G in the game I think they're going to see Kenneth Murray in the game be like all right coverage Advantage let's try and get some advantageous matchups with tight ends with wide receivers some Crossing patterns over the middle let's see if we can't put these linebackers in a blender I bet you see them test that several times how the Titans defense responds how they uh counter that how they go back and forth is going to be fascinating to see but that that to me feels about as predictable as anything that you might see on Sunday and how the linebackers and Murray and Gibbons Jones when he's out there answer that you know may determine how quickly or how slowly uh one gets on the field or the other gets off of it but I think that you have Gibbons Gibbons is good depth you have Jones he'll get there eventually it doesn't have to be in week one uh Corey Smith says doesn't he have prior work under the DC no uh Ernest Jones was drafted to the Los Angeles Rams dard Wilson has not worked for the Rams in quite some time he was in Baltimore for a year he was in Philadelphia for a year before that he was with the Jets for several seasons and Ernest Jones is only 24 years old so he just he is not um unless I'm missing an odd year at the very start of his of Ernest Jones career there erest Jones has not worked under dard Wilson but I'm sure dard Wilson is familiar I'm sure that multiple NFL I know the multiple NFL staff scouted Ernest Jones out of South Carolina so I'm sure he's not completely unfamiliar with the player obviously they wouldn't have traded for him if he didn't have some level of comfort and familiarity but he has not had prior experience under um under dard uh Brandon says I give you [ __ ] Buck but you're a realist and you call it how you see it Titans gonna show you they ain't the same team from a year ago listen I I pray that your football team shows me that I am uh you know you guys don't want to watch 17 points per game I don't want to spend my weekends watching 17 points per game languishing uh in uh in the L scape of the NFL I don't want to watch a left tackle undermine you down in down out I want to watch competitive football I want to see them legitimately compete and they had they were more competitive than they probably should have been the last two years but still I want to see them being meaningfully competitive and I haven't been able to say that they have been meaningfully competitive since like October of 2022 that's a long long time ago kids all right let's keep it moving uh here on the prime time program gone viral what's the best thing that you saw on the internet record prediction I want to predictions but I appreciate you asking um I uh let's get into a gone viral video I I I'm I'm not I'm not personally attacking you halo it's just been a thing for me for a long time I have no idea what's going to happen in these games and I never thought wa wasting oxygen on record predictions was a productive exercise but perhaps I need to readjust my position on that because I understand why people do them because they're fun o and 17 um so what is the best thing that you saw on the internet this week there's a bunch of good [ __ ] that was on the internet this
