Arden Key suspension OVERTURNED + Malik Willis reaction

last night at Nissan Stadium about an hour before the Deluge hit Middle Tennessee and the Tennessee Titans again in the final seconds literally in the expiring seconds of a game this week were able to secure a second straight win in the preseason we're going to talk about a couple of different things including that game reaction and what we took away from it but the biggest news is ardan Key's suspension overturned and we will get into that to start the show so Arden key first preseason game second little bit of Sunday Funday mixed in between we've got Sunday Night Football on as a matter of fact on Fox it will be interesting to see whether uh this continues i h honest to God I expected to uh hear Tom Brady on the broadcast tonight and I am curious to know whether he is going to have any participation at all in this particular game because of course he is broadcasting for Fox this year so we will see if Tom Brady makes an appearance either way ardan key suspension overturned and things you had the second preseason game you had everything that came with the second preseason game we have had two different press conferences with Brian Callahan since that game took place we also had in the middle of the day yesterday the biggest news of the weekend which was ardan key and his suspension being overturned in it's not unprecedented but you just don't see suspensions overturned that way so it is pretty sh shocking to see that be the case and I am going to be fascinated when the league makes That official to hear what ardan key has to say about this because until the league does make it official he nor Brian Callahan nor anybody with his uh his representation or with the organization can comment on this until the league officially says all right case closed suspension overturned because it has been reported by Jeff Simmons who broke the news but it hasn't been officially put out there by the league yet so that's what everybody's waiting for now this was a possible suspension that went back to I think the first reporting on it was around the first week or second week of training camp that we learned that Ardon key in the middle of practice as a matter of fact paulah hary reported that Arden key was scheduled to be suspended by the NFL that he would appeal and then three weeks went by without any news any information coming out about this particular I suspension other than the league hadn't officially handed down the suspension yet so uh a couple of different things went uh took place and as ardan key presented the evidence and as Arden Key's representation presented the EV evidence to the league about his belief that he did not in fact take a performance-enhancing substance or a substance on the band substances list uh the Titans decided to wait out wait things out kind of slow their roll a little bit sounds like they had a pretty good idea I mean it it is it's it's evident that they had a pretty good idea that there was potential for if not out overturning it at least getting the suspension reduced right they were they were not pursuing any veteran Edge Rush options we saw Matt judon get traded from the Patriots to the Falcons without the Titans being involved we saw Carl Lawson sign a deal with the cowboys without the Titans being involved no movement on the Hanan reic side of things or anywhere else yanuk and G or otherwise because they said all right until such time as ardan key is officially suspended we're going to continue to operate like Ardon keyth still on our football team or will be available to our football team for the first six weeks until such time as the league tells us otherwise so the question that we're going to start with on Facebook YouTube Twitter and on Twitch is this this evening knowing ardan key is going to be available uh David Lee asks an important question is autri getting overturned uh overturned they seem to be linked together since they are former teammates well David here's what I'll tell you uh there's no indication that Deno ay and Arden key suspension are linked other than the fact that they used to be teammates they're no longer teammates right uh Deni Al still plays in the AFC South but he plays in Houston that there's been nothing to uh there's been nothing to connect the two other than their relationship having played on the same team last year beyond that I haven't seen any reporting about Deno alre suspension being overturned but also I don't know that the the that anybody else had reported Beyond Jeff Simmons reporting it before people were able to confirm it that even ardan ke was going to be overturned so we'll see what happens happens with ay we'll see if he ends up getting overturned as well um and what the case might be but it's he Deno alry got out there and said he planned to not appeal he put out a statement saying that he planned to not appeal and also his suspension has not been officially handed down so I'm not sure what to make of the N it's it's weird the the whole situation is weird and I'd be fascinated to know once the league makes their official determination or makes their determination official what went in if we can get any kind of specifics from Aran ke from Brian Callahan from somebody with the league on what evidence made it so that they would be capable of overturning this you never see peed suspensions in particular get overturned that way so this would have to be something pretty glaring in the process for the league to be able to identify and say no no no all right you're good all clear play six games don't miss game checks that is a huge chunk of money uh that ardan ke will be uh have available to him yet again and it is a huge piece of the puzzle for the Titans who are trying to be I would say I don't want to say they're trying to be League average they're of course trying to be better than League average but it would be a great success if they ended up having a League average defense given how thin they are at a variety of positions including UPF front uh Fredrick Ross says his confidence has grown he believes there'll be a top 15 defense with ardan key so I mean that is slightly better than average if there's 32 NFL teams right and 16 would be League average then top 15 doesn't necessarily mean that they will be a great defense but you're allowing for the opportunity for them to be slightly above average based on their personnel group now I would be willing to uh I would be willing to to say that they are slight above average based on their collection of talent but only as starters because their depth has already taken a beating and frankly you know I know that lerus sne has a management program I know that that management program in Kansas City allowed him to play all 17 games last year and in the postseason and then he never really practiced in training camp or the regular season with the Chiefs last season and route to winning a second consecutive Super Bowl but in the absence of seeing larius actually play with this defense or Cheeto uer because he has not been available to them with a calf injury since the first week of training camp it it's tough to make any kind of determination about the quarterback group for example because the starting Corners just they haven't played they haven't practiced that way I mean Sneed has taken part in a team drill since training camp began I believe one team drill since training camp began but other than that no preseason game scheduled would not an anticipate seeing any uh either of them in that preseason game and ardan key coming back who uh is expected to play with the starters the starters that will play in the preseason finale because Brian Callahan said that they would play in the preseason finale this is something that uh this is something that for the Titans it doesn't make them infinitely better to have Arden key though Arden key is the best option they have opposite Harold Landry but it does keep them from being appreciably worse right it doesn't it doesn't put them over the top necessarily as a defense Ardon key I would describe him best used as a situational pass rusher pass rusher and not quite as a three- down player now this is a huge opportunity for him in the second year of a three-year deal where the you know after this season they could make the determination to not keep ardan ke Beyond this year but he comes in having had six sacks last year which is the third most by uh a player on the Titans roster he's in his seventh year heading into his seventh year so he's not exactly um he's not exactly a spring chicken or anything like that Arden key is a known commodity but still seven years into the league he's still looking for that first kind of season where he is a full-time starter quantifiably and not just the best available option that they have to put out there on the outside so we'll see how much better Arden key can be this year with tandre with sweat with Harold Landry with Jeff Simmons and the like I do think that it keeps them from being much worse than they could be to have Arden key at least in theory uh you know barring for Wyatt's job all of us uh breaking the news there the day before neither of them would play in preseason game number two which is what we are getting ready to talk about next but again a huge victory for the Titans defense to have him available bour says buck in New Orleans Lord help us I mean in New Orleans last year for the for the season opener and the worst thing that happened was your quarterback threw three picks and blew a one-point game so that is uh that's the only bad thing that's happened uh for Titans fans since I've been to New Orleans I went to Bourbon Street for the first time last year never been to Bourbon Street before I just can't wait to get to get some of the food like New Orleans is arguably the best food city that I've ever been to um and I have been to uh many places internationally in my lifetime I love all kinds of different food but New Orleans is a Top O top three Food City in any country I've ever been to anywhere in the world that I've been to uh love New Orleans so not not don't love the heat don't love New Orleans in August love everything else about New Orleans looking forward to that trip on Saturday and then the game on Sunday so with that being said Sunday they're going to play their starters in the preseason last night that was definitely not the case none of the starters played in the preseason but there was a lot of valuable things to be learned from other guys on this roster who are going to make impacts for this team in 2023 we will get into that here in excuse me in 2024 we'll get into that here in just a second right after I to get that win and a you know a a game that presented a lot of valuable learning opportunities for one quarterback in particular that played because of course will Levis did not play last night Malik Willis got the start and Mason Rudolph they basically alternated every two series until the final drive where Mason Rudolph got the opportunity to go out there and put his team in position to win the game after Malik Willis through what could have been a game ceiling interception there was a lot of different things to take away from that and Brian Callahan said heading into the week into the game that Malik Willis had earned the opportunity to make that start and he had worked with the second string on Thursday in practice against the Seahawks that's the first time that we had seen that and then they come out there yesterday and he's not making the start with the twos he's making the start he is the third string quarterback and the rest of the third string offense are making the start together Geron Christian is the backup left tackle but on that first offensive Series in the first couple offensive series from Malik Willis Jaylen Duncan was the starting right tackle you have guys uh you have guys fighting for roster spots at the bottom of the roster like Mason Kinsey and Julius Chestnut they were out there with Malik Willis and Hassan H Haskins came out later with Mason Rudolph which makes me think that Assan H Haskins is ahead of somebody like Julius Chestnut in the competition for rb3 there was a lot of different things that we learned jaquin Jackson continues to make an impact he both as a receiver with five total catches last night and as a returner had one return to make an impact in the game you found a lot of different things that you liked and some things that you didn't like but the question that I'm gonna ask you on Facebook YouTube Twitter and twitch what was the best thing that you saw on Saturday against the Seahawks and what was the worst thing that you saw in the comment section or from that Seahawks game you can fill us in on your perspective and I will give you mine here in just a second was what was the best thing you saw and what was the worst thing that you saw in Saturday's preseason win Facebook YouTube Twitter and on Twitch is how you get involved uh Jacob Pinon says we are going to beat the Titans are you a as is that a Saints fan is that a Bears fan is that a Jets fan a week two you have to identify yourself Jacob when you say we I'm not entirely sure who you're talking about and depending on who you're talking about I may or may not agree with you Darth Vader says Buck does Burks not playing last night mean he is the the number four wide receiver over NWI so we asked Brian Callahan about that today because frankly I was offended that Nick Westbrook Aina played a full half of that useless pre-season game last night and somebody like Tayon Burks did not play a single snap did not even dress here's the explanation from Brian Callahan and you can agree with it or you can disagree with him what he said was without DeAndre Hopkins and doesn't sound like I mean Brian Callahan didn't say this but based on based on where things are trending I'm not expecting DeAndre Hopkins to be available for week one but I you know nothing's set in stone nothing's concrete he's been in Los Angeles continuing to rehab this knee sprain that he's been dealing with and Callahan said they do expect dehop back in the building here in the next few days and into this week but without DeAndre Hopkins and tayin Burks not playing multiple positions like Nick Westbrook Aina does they were already down their starting X receiver so they said all right if we're already down one at that spot in dehop let's not go down two potentially with tayum Burks because what did you see last night from Malik Willis who I thought looked better in spurts but still struggles with the timing and Rhythm of the passing game to the point where you're throwing a lot of and you can consider them Hospital balls you can call them whatever you like but you put your receivers in pretty precarious precarious positions where NWI has to you know kind of stop and and contort himself to make a catch on a pass that's behind him and gets smoked in the back as a result the same thing happened to uh David Martin Robinson the undrafted rookie free agent tight end who caught a pass from mle Willis and that immediately got cracked in the back Jaquan Jackson took a pretty solid hit on Malik's best throw of the day and it was the deep it was the biggest completion of the day for Malik Willis uh for the Titans offense as a matter of fact a 24 yard rope that he hit jaquin Jackson on and jquan Jackson took a a big hit held on to the football but for the amount of big hits that receivers were taking and and Malik Willis not necessarily I don't want to say that he puts his receivers In Harm's Way but he more often puts his receivers In Harm's Way than for example will liser Mason Rudolph might so I I understand the logic of saying all right tayin burgs and Malik Willis with the third string quarterback and right now A starting wide receiver those guys probably aren't going to play together very early on it makes more sense to keep tayin healthy to give tayin rest and to have tayin make sure that we're ready for the dress rehearsal next week in New Orleans and then ramp things up for the opener in Chicago where I do think they are expecting tayin Burks to be the starting wide receiver alongside Calvin Ridley and also Tyler Boyd didn't play he's dealing with the foot Brews right now they had third 38 total players who did not play in this game including guys like tandre sweat and JC leam right rookies and you may take those even by a case by casee basis you may think sweat needs to play or lean doesn't you may think vice versa uh but it is pretty interesting to see just a blanket statement about the starters last night yes sweat leam Levis uh Ridley all those guys all of you are starting caliber players none of you are going to play in the second preseason season game so they can get extended looks at guys like Malik Willis and TK McLendon and uh Mason Kinsey and all the other death dudes who are not going to not going to they don't need to ramp up for the for the regular season because those guys will likely not see unless there's a you know something tragic happens regular season snaps that way it's more important for them to collectively play in New Orleans and then get ready for Chicago the following week uh so what was the best thing that you saw and what was the worst thing that you saw last night Johnny Davis says how come the only player that could spell NWI last night was Levis uh yeah they had well not it's not spell NWI right Johnny you should probably clarify they asked during the Jumbotron during one of the TV uh timeouts during the game last night I noticed that they were having they did a bit where they had players on the Jumbotron spell out Nick Westbrook aina's name and not that nobody got it except for Levis um so it's not like they were asking being asked to spelled NWI because of course NWI is spelled NWI um but Nick Westbrook Aina is a little more tricky so I don't necessarily fault guys for not being able to spend it that way so like they're writing his name or texting his name out they call him NWI too right uh Cole claxon says Malik Willis fire Emoji interesting that was not my takeaway um I thought that Malik Willis here's here's let me say this about Malik because I talked to both those guys last night Mason Rudolph and Malik and obviously we talked to Brian clean last night and then again this morning when we had a uh when we had another follow-up press conference after he's had the opportunity to work watch the film and I agree with the assessment from Brian Callahan that both of those guys got good situational football looks last night but I it's it's like Bradon narvon right Who's the rookie undrafted kicker who hit the 59 y um to uh to give them a an initial lead or give them a lead believe that was their first lead of the game for Braden Aron so he hits the 59 y he hits the 46 yard game winner and Brian Callahan in the postgame press conference is asked about the kicker competition if there is one if it changes anything that Braden arvon this guy who's just appeared out of nowhere um and is just fighting for a roster Spot somewhere and Nick Folk who's clo I mean he's 39 right and he doesn't have that kind of range and Brian Callahan very quickly shuts any of that down and says you know it doesn't really make a difference but it was good to see for him and that's kind of how I feel about the quarterback competition it's not what Malik Willis did last night was not enough to make a difference in the backup quarterback competition Mason Rudolph is the most experienced Mason Rudolph is the most experienced quarterback on the Titans roster he's also the highest paid quarterback on the Titans roster and on top of that he's probably the most known commodity that the Titans have at quarterback because the starter is very unproven the third string guy is toolsy but still raw and developmental and Mason Rudolph has been pretty consistent about who he is as a player since being drafted into the league so we all know what Mason Rudolph is and I think Mason Rudolph went out there and and acquitted himself fairly well he went perfect he didn't necessarily handle pressure he doesn't move as well as the other two right he's a bit more statuesque back there but when called upon with what a minute 55 left in the game Brian Callahan puts Mason Rudolph in for the final drive to go out there set his team up for a game-winning field goal and then narson connects from 46 so it is um it is an issue uh on a couple of different fronts if your backup quarterback is playing at all of course but there is nothing at least from my perspective that Mason Rudolph or that Malik Willis did last night that would lose him the backup quarterback or that would win Malik Willis the backup artback job and cost Mason Rudolph the backup quarterback job but we did ask Brian Callahan about that situation earlier today it's good to see it's good to see them both be competitive um it's good to see Malik um have some opportunities to to play a little more in this game which was good to see um he he does some things with his legs that only he can do he ran for some yards and got out of some trouble that was encouraging he can really throw it he put some good throws out there on tape Mason shows his veteran um when the you know two two minute drives being able to move us in position to score I think goes a long way for him that's that's really good to see he's calm he's collected he makes really good decisions with the ball and so that they both did really good things um and I don't really have a lot negative I think we'll let this thing play out another week um but I think they've both done really good things both for themselves just as as a quarterback play they they put some good stuff out there so encouraged by both of them really and I think that you know this time next week we'll be able to to make a decision and determination on on who the two will be and then what happens with the third spot you know if we keep three or if we practice squad three or if we just go with two so um we'll let it go one more week before we dive too far down that road how much of an advantages the change to the emergency quarterback rule this year um it's an advantage to some it's nice to have um but you still have to keep it's still an active roster spot you know so it's you got to make that determination I week toe basis if you're dealing with injuries or you're you're concerned about it um it is nice to have though I mean to be able to do that is a good thing but you still there's still an active part of that where it's it's not a it's not a free spot which would make it a lot easier if it was just free and you could keep three and didn't count for your 53 or 46 but it still does unfortunately that's the that's the tough part but um it's a good option to have yeah that's Brian Callahan speaking about Malik Willis and Mason Rudolph and and the idea of of the Third quarterback rule playing into some Advantage for teams now still takes up a 53 man roster spot and that doesn't guarantee that in the case of Malik Willis that he will be worth a 53rd roster spot in this particular situation but I think for Malik Willis any reps are valuable I think that somebody is going to take a look at him if for example he doesn't make the initial roster here and he ends up uh you know going through the waiver process I would be surprised if somebody doesn't claim him uh Chris short says if Malik doesn't make the roster who serves as the emergency quarterback well I mean nobody until such time as you sign one um but you know it's possible that they would go out and acquire a player just to put on the practice squad because you can protect uh some practice squad players they have the 16-man practice squad so a kicker a quarterback you know a wide receiver the the Bryce Olivers of the world bason kiny the world though keny has a real shot of making the 53 the initial 53 this year doesn't mean he has to be on the roster all year long but I think that in particular um you know Malik Willis is is a viable candidate to make the initial roster if for no other reason than they feel like he might get scooped up on waivers and they want to try and stash him by keeping him on the initial 53 get through the waiver claims process and then you can release him later and try and get him back on the practice squad so I uh I think that I think that you the I don't even want to describe it as kind of like the devil you know situation because to to use the word devil and this with that kind of connotation gives gives you something it sounds negative about Malik and I don't mean it to be negative but basically what what I'm trying to say is if you're a coaching staff in the NFL and this guy has just spent not just this off season with you but has spent the past two seasons with this collection of players knows these guys knows the system knows the facility uh all all these different things then you would rather have somebody who's been through all that with you in the off season program in the leadup rather than cut that guy see him go to another team and then have to do it all over again with another emergency quarterback right so I I think that their preference would be to keep him initially but we will see how he how they go about doing that because it's no small feat be says Buck would you cut Kyle Phillips yeah probably um there's there's he's not gonna play it sounds like in the in this final preseason game which is just I I feel terrible for him I I really do um I feel bad for him feel bad for Marlon Davidson two guys who had the ability to to make a real difference here and are just not gonna get to do it because in the case of Marlon Davidson who I don't think we've talked about since uh since the last time we did Prime Time T biceps he's done for the year he was Jeff Simmons primary backup he played good football for them down the stretch last year uh when Jeff Simmons was not available to play and then in the case of uh in the case of Cy Phillips Cy Phillips was probably the primary slot backup well has been the primary slot backup to Tyler Boyd even without playing special team so he was already kind of on a razor thin Edge there and I just I can't imagine a situation in which he misses this time with a hamstring injury doesn't play in two of the three preseason games and still finds a way to make the initial 53 man roster I would be very surprised by that uh Nasser says Caleb Farley out of here too well if I was so that depends because the The Farley thing is different right Caleb Farley if they wanted to do right by him they would put him on injured reserve cutting him would cost him money and I know that you're not out here trying to do you know favors for a guy who has not contributed anything of of consequence to your football team since being a number one draft choice back in 2021 this is a contract year for Caleb Farley but his personal tragedy alongside his professional tragedy is really difficult to kind of wrap your head around so if you wanted to do right by him you would Place him on injured reserve you would allow him to make a portion of his paycheck while he figures out what you know what his next move is I mean at this point I would be surprised if his next move has anything to do with football but you know what I know he's he continues to work um and and is going to try and work his way back from this hamstring injury and they haven't put him on injured reserve yet so maybe they still believe is a chance to make the active roster but guys he's he's he's behind Trey Avery on the dep chart and none of you seem to like Trey Avery Avery understandably as he got burnt for a touchdown last night the opening touchdown uh by the Seahawks at ESOP Winston who I had to make sure was a real person and not a Madden creative player apparently to his credit he's been in the league for this is his fourth season but still a 23 yard pass just burnt toast Trey Avery uh in coverage and Caleb Farley is behind that guy on the dep chart so just something to keep in mind um with realistic realistic expectations for Caleb Farley I I truly don't know if this guy is going to be a professional football player anymore um and I'm not saying that because of anything that's happened here recently but I just he's he's up against some pretty steep odds so we'll see what happens with Caleb Farley they have two weeks to make that determination and you saw in sports this weekend there were a couple of different things that I think are worth mentioning here uh there is this uh there is the Caleb Williams debut which I thought was partic not debut but preseason performance he and Roman dun are going to be special it looks like it's a no slouch of a week one opponent for the Tennessee Titans I really enjoyed watching Caleb Williams uh in the preseason I've really enjoyed watching him in the preseason I think you know I don't know if he's going to live up to the to the billing of a number one overall draft choice it's far too early to say anything like that but certainly looks the part of an NFL starting quarterback uh and uh I enjoyed watching him play there's also things like Patrick Mahomes doing behind the back passes the Travis kelan preseason which is always excellent Bert refused to put that clip in here because he hates the Chiefs as a Ravens fan and he's already in hatred mode uh for week one because of course the defending Super Bowl champions the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs will host the Baltimore Ravens and Derrik Henry this year in the NFL season opener just two weeks away think about that uh three weeks away think about that that is not too far in the distant future but kickers had a big weekend not Braden arvon got done wrong because he hit a 59 y it's the second longest field goal attempt made at Nissan stadium and he gets out done by a Cowboys kicker who drills from 65 he drills it doesn't have enough oh man 66 for Aubrey this is the end of the first half holy totally ridiculous a 6665 yard field goal make preseason or not that's real live game reps 59 was incredibly impressive Braden narvon thought he was going to be the hero of the kicking weekend and here comes Aubrey for the Cowboys drilling a 66 yard field goal which is still crazy to think about uh the answer should have been a absolutely the uh the Patrick Mahomes backwards or behind the back pass but verus Petty and did not want to put that clip in the lineup and I understand uh Scrappy says on YouTube Buck uh will be shocked this year when Tennessee wins a Super Bowl 20 and0 um yeah if if the tit yeah I I will I will be the first to admit I will raise my hand and say I have no expectation that the Tennessee Titans would win or compete frankly for a Super Bowl in 20124 that is not where I think this team is at I am cautiously optimistic about the Tennessee Titans for the first time and probably oh probably since Julio the Julio trade that's the last time I thought the Titans were capable of actually doing something and I think they are capable of of at least competing for the division I don't know if they're going to be able to win it the Texans are really good football team uh and even the Jags are you know more proven a commodity than the Tennessee Titans coming into this year no matter how how down on Trevor Lawrence you are and there's reasons to be down on Trevor Lawrence completely acknowledge that but uh I think think that uh I think in particular yes it would shock me it would very much shock me if you win the Super Bowl this year if you if you even make it to the playoffs I will be uh surprised and that will be a hugely successful season if you do uh chosen says Buck do you think they're right by not playing Burks yeah it's kind of a tough one right because I think Burks needs all the Reps he can get but also not reps with Malik Willis like Malik Willis is third string quarterback Malik Willis is not gonna you I don't want to say that he's gonna that he's gonna hinder Burks more than he helps him but there's not there is not a lot to be gained for a starting wide receiver to play with the third string quarterback when his whole issue is timing and rhythm in the passing game and that's critical to to your success as a receiver so I understand the logic um I think he could have benefited from some snaps with Mason Rudolph apparently they disagreed and uh feel you know cautious enough about their depth at receiver that they don't want to take a hit to not just DeAndre Hopkins but Tayon burkson that is decided yeah not worth it at that point all right that's going to do it for us tonight we appreciate you guys hanging out with us 10 to one on 1045 The Zone there's a ton of [ __ ] from the preseason game we didn't get to talk about there's a ton of stuff from the Ardon key thing that we didn't get to talk about because of some limitations here but we will have three hours to dive in tomorrow on 1045 The Zone so come join yourself a ton of Goodwill with the way that you were able to debut against the Falcons and how great you guys were as a team on that day and you know maybe the oers uniforms have something to do with it there's a little bit of Po poetry to that in and of itself but it's seems like you were that was very quickly put aside from the vast majority of the fans who might have doubted you at that point and it feels like you have a lot of that buy in already prior to you know accomplishing what you ultimately set out to accomplish for sure yeah I think that that first game definitely helped and that was very special um you know I wish that I can have a lot more performances like that so people you know don't remember that game as much you know I just to think that a lot of people keep pointing back to my first game when I you know I played bunch more games after that uh I'm due for another one like that and to to keep pushing myself to performing to to the level where I know I can so um you know I I know we got the guys to do it this year I Got Confidence
