[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] welcome to blackburg Virginia this afternoon at the terror doome with the Virginia Tech pokes will touch that hokey Stone and get ready for another season in Lane Stadium we are in full on stripe out mode as the fans doing their part to try to distort the vision of the visitors as we'll see the number 15 team in the country the Tennessee Volunteers taking on another team from the ACC the Virginia Tech hokes glad to have you with us for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis David poock and Jesse Palmer with me in the booth guys we are ready to tee it up the volunteers will put total rather and we'll get started if you can do that I don't know why you don't do it every time reduce the risk banged it out of the back of the endzone they'll put it in play at the [Music] [Applause] 25 first down here for the offense [Music] [Applause] easy here's the handoff sweet cut there okey hokey hokey high tech tech VPI got it rolling on the ground and Virginia Tech fans love that chant and they love the physical ground game the ability to run the football that's kind of who they are that's how they're built just a tough group of individuals missed his receiver there it's incomplete I don't I don't know why but it's a thing the ACC wheel of Destiny you spin it you never know how it's going to come up and you can't afford to give away a game early in a conference like this and I think both of these coaching staffs they've understand that and they've been preaching to their team we've got to start fast not just in this game we've got to start the season fast we've got to take advantage of this opportunity and I think ree hit it right on the head too the wheel of Destiny right it seems like it's a new team every year that's playing in the championship and appears to be a wideopen league so a lot of turmoil a lot of change I think that starting one and0 is an important step to get into that championship game you know just went with something very easy very reliable Flip It Forward let your receiver do the rest how only got to get a few yards nice job nice execution first down looking downfield it's drones fires to the big fella and he was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form T looking for space it's toon just a solid stop by this sophomore you know runs like this often times are like a boxer in a boxing match obviously it's not a knockout punch but these are body blows as the game goes on these small gains are going to turn into longer runs they'll try to bully their way for the first and a big hit at the end but it didn't stop him from getting the first down and I think on that last run play on third down here early in the game they're making a statement that we believe we're the more physical team and we're going to run the football even if you know it's coming at you nice job they' got the ball at Midfield I expect to see more run plays coming up grabbed in the middle it's Lane he's brought down quickly minimal gain there still a bit short of the first down and quarterback receiver on the same page nice job seeing the Zone understanding the drag route concept easy pitch easy catch right on target with that last pass now it's second and medium here we go defense showing plenty of pre-nap movement of their own give to the back he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple listen I know there are a lot of DBS out there that all they want to do is get interceptions and dance in the end zone this dude likes to put his face in the fan get close to the line of scrimmage and tackle and on the opening drive if he's out there he gets a huge tackle for loss early that is a statement play back to pass it's throws and this sophomore able to wreak some havoc and get the sack this offense has moved into plus territory and they want to keep the heat on they'll go for it on fourth down the offense waste no time getting the timeout call and the hokes will punt it away on fourth down he ought to be able to use this first punt to pin him deep looking for a block it's Samson they'll get down field and make the tackle right at the 16 yd [Applause] Line This Crowd full Thro splitting the ear crumbs and letting him know it's going to be a long day they shut it down quickly but he gets two out to the 18 the vs will hustle to the line hand off from the shotgun crosses the 30 he's got away and he's running in the open pass the 20 touchdown ball and once he found daylight it was Katie Bar the Door baby number well I know it's a very small sample size and we got a lot of football to go this year but what can you say about this it's how explosive and impressive of they look top five in the nation in scoring and you can see why they've got speed and playmakers all over the field and they desperately wanted to attempt a return but decided not to instead they'll take the Touchback we about to get another look at this hookie offense that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do to you and attack them and the tackle was made but there has been a flag thrown that penalty moves the ball back 10 yds will replay the down time winding down in the quarter as they come to the line looking for a man it's drones receiver looks it in it's complete they make the Stop and that's how the first quarter will end that's the end of the first quarter Tennessee virgin we'll get this quarter going with a second down [Applause] play they'll run it from the gun the hokes get the first down well they picked up that first running the football that's good news for an offensive line that really has been getting pushed around and bullied in this game so far let's see what happens moving forward movement from the linebackers trying to mess with the offensive Line's assignments they're going to go right back to him on first down really nice stop there from this senior leader I like feeding my guy I like getting my running back touches feeding the ball so he can break some of those big runs but I'm also okay with these little ones set the tone stay balanced he's going to pass on second down got rid of it in a hurry but he couldn't find his man it's incomplete they couldn't connect on second down now staring at a third and [Applause] nine from the gun wants to pass quarterback on the Move still looking complete downfield now with a great opportunity as they pick up the first down they've got it at the 40 and the hokes are on the Move 29 29 quick touch pass to the receiver and the defense holds firm no pick up at all on that play really good job by the defense seeing it and going and getting nice job understanding the touch pass it could happen those guys go in motion man I got to understand sa's got to see that start flying down getting ready to play that nice job by the defense being ready for that play looking to throw it's drones tiend finds a soft spot and he laid the lumber to stop him from getting the first down listen nice completion short game now you get to third down third Down's more manageable guess what if I don't get it on third down I still got that fourth down in my pocket nowadays analytics we're going for it anyways fires and picked off taking it the other way he's inside the 40 running inside the 20 smashes ahead and he will roll into the end zone touchdown volunteers look I know it's only the second quarter but we're starting to see a pretty significant Gap develop between these two teams right now no doubt when your defense is scoring your offense is scoring good things happening for your ball Club this defense on point reading their Scouting Report making big plays and the extra point was good as they finished the drive they're about to kick it away in the defense probably can't wait to get back out there after the pick six on the run from inside his own five he only needs a sliver of daylight oh what Vision one little mistake in your kick coverage unit against this dude and you are in a world of trouble and they were barely able to keep him from scoring and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field this is when the pressure pressure can ramp up a little bit on an offense David when they start feeling the heat to answer a score and I think being down 14 you can kind of feel that way but dude if you put a good drive together this is a seven-point game so Palmer no need to paint it I was just going to say David I mean this thing can flip quick you go down score all of a sudden your defense gets a stop or who knows better yet gets a turnover this game is entirely different this offense has a second down play linebackers trying to create some confusion dropping back it's drones nice defensive way to get a hand in there and knock it away and though it wasn't an interception but a lot of times tips and deflections leads to interceptions great job by the defender getting his mid on the football they got a ways to go on third down from the 24 as this defense tries to force him into a field goal try they'll run it out of the shotgun they wrestle him to the ground but he's got ready for a first down and they just kind of sneak that one in there as a defensive guy third and five plus I'm thinking pass they were thinking pass Palmer and they slipped the run and it's so nice then to have this guy at running back two right because you could throw it to him on third down or hand it off and he's got the vision and the athleticism to go pick up that first keep the drive going yeah a great job by the defense holding the line of scrimmage playing downhill playing responsibility football making sure they shut down that option play he wants to throw here on second down and swatted down by the defense to stop the scoring opportunity and that is a huge missed opportunity for the quarterback you've got your guy wide open in the end zone you're not under pressure you just got to hit him that ball got away that's one he'd like to have [Applause] back they'll try to pass it in on Third and goal and that's incomplete a Defender all over him knock the ball to the ground fourth down coming up well on Third and short in field goal range they dial up the pass play quarterback was trying to get through his progressions there was just simply nobody open couldn't make an accurate enough throw ball Falls incomplete Now setting up a big decision here on fourth down and that's just the Chip Shot that's just a field goal they got to make guys the volunteer offense is back and they hope it's touchdown time in Tennessee they've been outstanding here in this first half might as well try for The Knockout punt sends it down field and they won't be able to connect downfield looking for a big time play they'll spread the defense out going five wide on second and 10 dropping back it's iova this time it's complete and not much doing there as that defense runs him out of bounds you complete some of these hitch throws early you're setting up the hitch and go later on you can pump fake that receiver can pette right up the sideline that might be a home run play for the offense they'll try to move the chains on Third and short from the 25 they go to the ground oh he's so hard to get on the ground he's got room he'll make a play on third down he's got enough for the first as they mark it at the 32 well that's kind of the advantage of third and medium right is the def keep them guessing you could throw it you can run it that time they hand it off and they pick it up and you can see the d drop back a little bit it creates a little bit of space the running back blasts through gets the first down oh he wants it all fires into traffic picked off didn't really get a chance to get started on that return but he has set him up at the 41 yd line I love when people start to understand what we're doing defensively if they're going to pass the football and that's where they're going to live I'm going to them dime I'm going to bring more defensive backs on the field so I can cover more of these speed guys that they have out there great job by the defensive back breaking on the football making the int making the DC look very smart they'll run it from the gun he'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it little bit at a time just to keep that defense honest after picking up a couple it's second and eight going to run it it's Thomas he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple the defense going to stop the clock with the timeout they want to make sure they have everybody on the same page man what a spectacular play by that defensive end to come up with the tackle there and you see those guys get off the football so fast most of these guys are 250 to 275 lbs but they get off the ball fast low in the offensive line they have no chance to stop those guys as quick and as fast as they are and a nice play call offensively there knowing that the defense is expecting passs knowing no one on the defensive side of the ball is going to be thinking about your running back in the running game so you catch him by surprise only four Defenders rushing up field the lanes were massive and that was easy work for the up that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with the halftime update the hokes will kick it away first and we'll start the second half takes it inside his own 20 chance for great field position here and the Return Man is stopped and that'll leave it up to the offense on the next Drive get this drive started from their own [Applause] 26 they'll open the second half with a run and they try the middle of this defense and that is not happening if you're going to stop the run game you better be physical up front on the defensive line they've got some MERS they've got some dudes with bad intentions nice play there forg is ahead picks up about three to the 29 Here Comes This Home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down to throw it's iova throws to the wide out got him downfield the express way is wide open TouchDown Tennessee and once he got away from the D they had no shot at catching it number one I know it's ear this season but it's obvious already this guy is a major weapon in this offense had two touchdowns in his first game he's now on the board right now What A Difference Maker and a playmaker he's going to be this season for this offens he'll bring it out it's green I know he thinks he can house every return but sometimes you just have to take a knee as he stopped at the 14 and we're about to get another look at this hoki offense trailing by three touchdowns if you're going to get back in it David the time to start is right now got to start now defense giving up points on that last possession again the offense is going to have to score and Jesse probably scored pretty quick yeah you got to go Tempo you're going to have to try to fit in as many plays as you can throughout the rest of this game but I think more than that you got to eliminate the negative plays no more penalties and no more turnovers and how about that play by that giant that mountain of a man on the defensive front great team defense on that run play everybody doing their job people winning their one-on ons D lineman staying in their gaps linebackers and DB's filling he just can't do it better he took a hit as he threw it and couldn't deliver the football it's incomplete and fourth Down's coming and the hokes will send out the punt unit this will be the second time they've had had to kick it away well what that punt lacked in height it made up for by being short Tennessee ready to go to work the Big Orange offense on the field there have been few obstacles for this offense as they are starting to pull away here in the second half Jesse and this has been a dream game for this play caller too right it's like anything that he's calling is working flawlessly yeah it's fun to be the offensive coordinator but not the defensive coordinator they have had no answers it's been an absolutely miserable day trying to Solve the Riddle of this offense and the balls moving quickly to the line they'll throw it on first down grabed behind the line it's Samson the defense wouldn't let him loose and even though it's in completion they lost yard you know as a quarterback you believe in your matchup and and my running back if I can get him the ball in space he's going to win a lot of times he didn't that time the defense was ready nice job in the open field making the nice tackle they're there to stop him at the 21 after a pick up of two just outside the red zone at the 21 but it's third and long they'll give it to the back and a great job by the linebacker you can tell starting to crowd the line of scage get up there in the last SC see it diagnose it get in the back field get the running back on the ground for the tackle for the loss fourth down and 12 is four down territory for this offense he'll try to throw and pick up the first down fires to the wide out he caugh it they'll get him stopped just short of the End Zone but they're in business here with a first down they were easily within field goal range there but they don't feel like you can win this game three points at a time n pass I mean you got to be aggressive you got to get touchdowns man that's you've seen the touchdown ball and the punishment has been extended after that amazing performance in week one this offense wasn't content they felt like they left some plays out on the field even though they were able to get that win I feel like they've taken another step they've raised their intensity level they've raised their execution this team is going to be a contender this year you can just feel it and they had the extra point to finish the drive almost ready to kick it away after scoring the [Applause] [Music] touchdown Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out Jesse he just had no rhythm in that last drive so someone's going to have to step up and make a play David and get this thing going yeah let's find some juice find your guy find those plays that you know you can run inside out forward backwards get some first downs get some positive momentum to the air it's drones pocket starts to collapse and the quarterback is not down back at the 13 they're facing a third [Applause] down he's looking downfield to throw fires it down the scene ball in the air intercepted going the other way and he's got room and what a way to end the quarter for this defense forcing the big turnover [Applause] that's the end of the third quarter with the score Tennessee 28 Virginia Tech Z they'll try to open this quarter by sticking it in the end zone here5 quarterback keeps it touchdown volunteers and the p falling has started and this always is the debate of where you fall it's your job to stop me or I should get conserved because this offense obviously has had themselves a day and apparently their day is not over they're going to continue to keep scoring and the defense better do something about it lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown drive here he comes from inside his own five and they'll haul down the returner to start us on the next drive and we're about to get another look at this Hoke offense mistakes are going to happen as they did on that last drive now how will they respond Jesse and this is the kind of guy who's going to take full accountability that was my bad that's on me I'm about to lead this offense now down the field to score some points dang I wish I would have play with you I didn't play with many quarterbacks that were just like yeah my bad hey guys I got this sorry about that it was more we should have ran a better route the give to the back cross the 30 out to the 33 and Gage four on the play you know it's so important for offense is to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first down after the productive first down play it's second and six back to throw it's Dron and he was hit just as he released it and it falls to the turf this offensive line is not going to like watching the film back uh tomorrow when they get the opportunity because they have gotten beat time and time again up front especially in passing situations all of the hits all of the sacks this quarterback has taken is the biggest reason why they're going to lose this game he gets it oh so close to the first down marker but I think he's going to be a touch short down in the fourth quarter it's too late for empty possessions they'll go for it on fourth down he'll keep it on the and I think those quarterback sneaks used to be for the big strapping quarterbacks but man nowadays dude all you got to do is fall forward and it's such a hard play to stop so you see this all across all levels of football and it's just a difficult play to stop the hokes are moving quickly down the field SP the give from the gun you'll take this every time five yards on the first down play football is about adjustments first half line up pound strong pound strong second half great job you're going to move your defense and shift to try to account for that boom we'll pull some guys and run a counter back side and have some [Applause] success tackled but he has a first down I love when players understand situations and they understand where the first down marker is and they understand where I got to get to a lot of people you'll see run South and try to bounce out wide and make big plays sometimes it's not about making big plays sometimes it's about getting that first down to make sure I get an extra set of downs instead of trying to make those big touchdown lines picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down we hit the two-minute warning and this offense is desperate to make something happen and do it in a hurry now on second down hand off from the gun nice solid form tackle from this sophomore and this defense is more than happy with the offense running the football they've done a great job today I mean they've really made this offense work so hard earn everything they've gotten and that's why this lead is balloon like it has just what they' hoped for on third down as they've got a first at the 32 well this offense has not put their best product on the field today they've got no points to show for any of their efforts so far but they've still got a chance but if it's going to happen it has to happen now in this two-minute situation this is where their Playmakers need to step up they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 we he'll run it again and a nice solid pick up there before the defense wrestles him to the ground and and I think this offense is all but surrendered right like they're they're down so much they need to be throwing the football they want to score a bunch of points to get back in this game but they got to find something moving forward man this was a rough day this was not a great offensive performance they got to bounce back the next opportunity the next moment cuz today o it was not a good day quick timeout by the defense there trying to make sure everyone has the same call got it and the hokes will try to pick it up on fourth down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down trying to make magic with his feet they finally get him on the ground but not before he rips off enough for a first down now they've got to hustle to the line and get set razor R they're looking to pass from the Red Zone and he got smacked just as he released the pass it's incomplete now second and 10 and this defense has put a game together like it is hard to put all the facets of Defense together run defense pass defense they've been so good man dialed in you could tell they were ready they were fast they were physical they dominated this football game they're trying to run the football there's just nowhere to go for the ball carrier inside he tried to bounce it to the outside that linebacker way too fast he met him there and forced the tfl here they come facing third and long from the 20 they give it to him again discards a man I'll tell you what sometimes towards the end of that play where you see you're not getting anywhere I'd like for you to just lower your shoulder and get a few yards I just don't love it when they finish and run out of bounds uh you know though we've both been around so long that we've seen a lot of guys try to make a play every single time and it ends up and he sacked a big play on fourth down to stop this drive I know that was tough but as a quarterback you got to know on fourth down you cannot take a sack any way shape or form you've got to be able to get rid of that football and give it an opportunity that time I know it wasn't blocked perfect but the quarterback's got to have more sense of urgency and they'll pick up the first down and Mark it at the 47 and the volunteers in the hurry up comes out throwing on first down and they couldn't hold off the heat and he goes down with the sack that is the last thing you want on first down as an offensive sack now it's second down back to pass it's iova he unleashes is a long one and as the ball Falls incomplete the clock strikes zero the old coaching cliche go one and0 every week and for the first week they get it done great start to the season that's what you want you want to come out find a way to win was it perfect absolutely not you're going to find things to work on throughout the season but one and0 that's where you wanted to be and I think if you're the coaching staff of this winning team you've got to like what you've just seen first game of the year there was tremendous effort on on the field guys flying around flying to the football trying to make the plays necessary to win this game they definitely made a few mistakes but that's what practice is for but if you're the coaching staff I [Music]
