welcome to blackburg Virginia home to a team that brings this lunch pail each and every game the Virginia Tech hokes we've got a sensational match up for you fans have been filing in and getting ready for this game as we'll see a squad from the Sun Belt the Marshall Thundering Herd taking on a team from the ACC the Virginia te Hokies for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth by David Pollock and Jesse Palmer and guys let's get this thing [Applause] started Marshall will kick off to get the festivity started here he comes from inside Z five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 so Virginia Tech's offense is on the field for the first time today and all eyes on this man as he takes the field the defense knows they're going to try to throw him the football and it probably won't matter guys oh but the defense Reef will be locked in he will see double coverage they will know where he's at on every single snap Jesse or else you will get beat and in a hurry he's one of the few receivers in the country guys where if it's man coverage is open Zone coverage is open if he's double covered he's open throw that guy the ball after picking up a couple it's second and eight it's a draw they stay aggressive and push their way out to the 33 and it's first down well what a nice run he's showing you his athleticism there you guys remember back in the day we were calling here and the alltime great Virginia Tech running back Kevin Jones came up to the booth and he got into a a vertical leap contest with poock it was awesome this guy on the field man he's got so much skill and ability he's strong and he's fast and uh I think he can also out jump da really nice stop there from this senior leader they go with the option quarterback keeps it himself and look we've seen this guy on tape guys break these tackles and take up the distance this offense should keep dialing up these option plays don't let that short gain by the QB prevent you from running this scheme in your playbook looking down field it's drones he is lucky to get that one back and the last thing you want is to turn it over on your opening drive oh that hit him in a bad spot right in the hands great play you still get a pass break up but man that could have been an interception by the defender there nice break on the football but secure that F and get the six get the pick six on Third and long trying to have a big completion here and it goes through his hands oh he had an explosive play right there for the taking but couldn't reel it in it's a nice job by the receiver working past the sticks looked like it was going to be a first down by the offense but how about the physical play knocking that ball loose and the hes send out the punt unit getting our first look of the afternoon at the punter not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair catch so Marshall offense has the ball for the first time as we take a look at our impact players for this game David what do you look for to make an impact from your leaders your leaders not only have to lead the football team but they got to step up and make plays on the field keep everybody calm these guys typically do a really good job of it yeah David and they also generally set the tone for their respective football teams regardless of which side of the ball they play on the teammates look towards them to step up in big games like this this crowd trying to make life miserable for this offense it's a draw building momentum picking up a chunk of yardage moving the chains out to the 34 beautiful play call offensively at the perfect time in that situation the defense obviously expecting pass so they sneak the draw in and gash the defense they've got a first and 10 at the 34 Ed the play fake now to throw fires to the right how about getting the foot down on that throw for the big completion well you're seeing the balance this offense has and how they can create explosive plays in a variety of ways we just saw come in the Run game and now you see one coming in the passing game I'll tell you they've got this defense on their heels Marshall quick to the line comes out throwing on first down finds a man in the middle just what this offense was looking for sets him up at the 26 with the first down Zone coverage means everybody's looking at the so now when I'm a wide receiver I got to make sure I know I fit in the hole between these zones I know where they're dropping to and I know where I need to get to great job by the wide receiver finding that hole and the quarterback fires deep toward the end zone touchdown Marshall and they strike first these two guys they just shared a glance and they knew exactly exactly what to do David and how many times do we hear that that quarterback about it after the game and go hey I just looked at him he knew what I saw I knew what he saw we're on the same page we've done this before that chemistry equals big plays P unit on the [Applause] field and the extra makes it seven nothing a very efficient five play scoring drive and they finished the deal with a 26 yd touchdown pass just about set to kick it away he'll start the return inside his spot he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 and Virginia the offense onto the field off the play fake on first down to throw he's got an open man that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the [Applause] stop you open a drive like that and the entire playb opens up on first down from the 44 looking to move it through the air finds a tight end and he won't quite get there but boy after that pick up just a few inches to go for the first an array of possibilities here I don't know who on defense is going to cover this guy honestly he could be a problem for this defense over the middle of the field in the passing game picked up some yardage with that completion now second down takes a hand off it's toon the hes get the first down well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up the running they get just enough to keep the drive alive it's first and 10 from the 44 yd line he wants to throw and he just FL dropped it I think he wanted to run before he secured it you don't see that very often you don't see the big tight ends with the soft Ms and the big huge hands and the nice sticky gloves you don't see them drop many of those balls that hit him right there in the hands that was a that was a missed Opportunity by the tight end right there and after the incompletion on first down this offense looking at second down man that D tackle a freaked athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back hat like quickness now facing a third and long to the air it's drones throws to the wide out just missed his man gave him just a little too much that's why it's so important for this defense to win first and second down you set up third and Longs like that you can show your exotic looks you can get the pass rush going everybody in the back end expecting and wait just a second the officials going to take a second look at this one so after reviewing the undisputable video evidence the replay booth has decided to overturn the call out of the shotgun they go to the ground he fights his way forward gets away from one but not much doing on that one great job a contained by this defense and in order to do that man on the line of scrimmage defensively has got to be able to set the point and force the football back into traffic and that's exactly what happened there got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 they'll ride the running back and leave it with him he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage great job by the defense everybody firing off the ball hitting their guys holding their gaps running to the football nowhere to go third and long from the 30 yd line in this defense hoping to knock them out of field goal range from the gun wants to pass he's got it and he's tripped up but not before picking up the first down simple call excellent execution moves the sticks on third down these QBs and receivers man they run this route in practice thousands of times so it's nice to see them come out here and executed in game conditions great job with the timing great job with the depth and the route nice work between those two and he strides his way into the end zone touchdown Virginia T quarterback's abilties to read the field is huge and also the anticipation the time to be able to throw the football Jesse and hit a guy in stride so he can get run after the catch and get in the end zone that was a nice job by the quarterback yeah it's critical David listen a lot of times touchdown passes aren't thrown into the end zone you've got to read the coverage the open guy and let him do the [Applause] rest ready to try the point after splits those uprights right in half they took it 68 ydd on that drive and the finisher 15yd touchdown throw all tied up in just about set to kick it away and he hauls it in and everybody's on the edge of their seats really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering Herd offense coming out the give that keeps the running game turning pick up of to the 23 it's going to be important this offensive line is able to get a little bit of push you just got to give this guy an inch a little crease and he can make yards for it halfway there on first down it's second and five the give to the tailb picks his way and gets four out to the 27 I know that wasn't a big huge play is not excited the fans aren't going crazy but those are the plays that in the fourth quarter matter a lot again making you tackle my back making you feel the physicality of the football game throughout so you get tired and get worn down in the fourth quarter Debs Rising as the crowd Gets behind this defense on third down he'll keep it himself that just never had a chance as they controll the middle of the field and stopped him in the back field on third down well this defense knew they going to be seeing some option in this game and right now everybody's doing a nice job playing their assignments on the third play of that drive they were expecting it and everyone communicating and all rallying to the football that was nice to see if you're the coaching [Applause] staff on the return it's Holloway really explosive when he gets his hands on the ball and he found a couple of crevices and made a nice game before being run out of bounds leaves it with the back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well they're trying to get that run play going to the outside but it's the defensive end who does a great job winning his oneon-one and forcing the negative play didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and [Applause] 11 give to the back a strong tackle up from the junior all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point the D thinking bring some heat on Third and long from the 44 back to pass it's drones fires to the wide out they were trying to work the outside there he played it perfectly almost got the pick instead it'll be fourth down oh and you'd love to have that play back if you're that Defender third down and you almost pick that off that's a catch you need to make if he catches that that might be pick six and the H decide to punt it away this will be the second time they've had to kick it away he'll bring it back it's p was looking for more Running Room but found nothing but more tacklers he's down at the 24 the offense makes its way back onto the field out of the gun to give to the back finds his way ahead for three out to the 27 yd line you know it's so important for offense is to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first down got three on first down it's second and seven they'll give it to the back and maybe he'll get back to the line of scrimmage but no more than that stopping the run is very high on every defensive coordinator's list making the team onedimensional nice job stuffing the run on that play right there better find the earplugged here comes the noise backing this defense on third down from the gun wants to pass he wants to take the top off and that ball is picked off couldn't find a t of on that return with that small change they take over at the 43 who says defensive backs don't have hands nice job breaking the football and making the catch a lot of times you see guys SWAT it down or you see them trying to catch it looks like they have two left hands defensive backs don't catch real well nice job reging the football nice job securing the int and actually catching it and we're about to get another look at this Hoke offense that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do to you and attack them they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 they'll try the right side he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple how about that defense in the back field nowhere to go right away you could tell they were playing the Run game all the way and they got in the back field and got the tackle for a loss ball is at the 41 as this defense tries to force the punt on Third and long looking for a man it's drones using his legs keeping his eyes down field and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback the defense was in the dime package they didn't have to send an extra rusher the Big Fellas up front took care of that yeah and all dime means is I'm bringing an extra fast guy on the field and taking an extra fat guy off the field but listen the fat gu still get home is that beautiful the big athletic defensive line still does a great job getting to the quarterback getting him on the ground the hes will line up to pun it away three and out and not much choice but to get rid of the [Applause] ball he'll bring it back it's pain they'll get down and put a stop to the return at about the 28 yd line Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering hert offense coming out going to take a shot at this DB and it slips through his fingers in complete that would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it Hey listen the didn't get the completion on that throw but that doesn't mean you can't try again trusting your Playmakers outside to push the field and stretch it vertically and make a play for you and won't surprise me to see this QB take more shots as this game goes on and back to the air on second down grabbed in the middle it's Chapman stopped after making the catch I really like the slot receiver and I understand he's not the biggest guy in the world but he just runs really good routes and he's always under control he can run option routs can run double moves he does a great job cutting and he's dangerous after the catch nice weapon to have work in the middle of the field gives it to the back on the draw nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the car and they sniff that draw out when a draw youit you really have to sell that pass like you're going to throw the ball down the field but the defensive line the defense was not biting it you could tell they were ready for it came got on the running back got him on the ground fast and in a hurry fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way waves the arm for the fair Catch and the catch is made close to the 30 yd line and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field that last Drive won't go on the Highlight Reel after ending in a punt they'd like to be more productive this time David and I think this offense has to be a little bit more balce find a little balance between the Run Jesse and working in that pass and I think too David it's just going to take a it just takes one play to get this thing picked up and going after the short completion let's see if they go back to the air the give out of the gun still on his feet at the 45 running toward the tap inside the 10 touchdown Hy and once he found open space might as well start playing and to have a rushing touchdown of that type of yardage you've got to be able to make something Miss it's one thing to get into the second level but can you make that last Defender Miss and you saw it on that play once he was in the clear with his speed he was gone [Applause] they'll try to add another to their lead and the extra point is true and they're on top by seven only took two plays to find the End Zone on that drive and gashing them on the touchdown run finished it off the kickoff team out there getting set fielded In The End Zone it's Turner pulled down at the 18 and the decision to bring it out of the end zone was not a good one the Marshall offense makes its way back onto the field they hope to be able to cash in on this drive David after having to punt it last time yeah and I think this offense needs to start it with the first play you need to be successful productive on that first play and it gets you in less predictable situations no doubt too don't you just feel like there's a little bit more sense of urgency on this drive it just feels like they've got to be able to put some points up on the board here they'll line up for a second down play now the play fake incompleted man is he lucky to get that one back defense that close to an interception man what a rough start for this quarterback already thrown one interception throwing another ball In Harm's Way they got to find a way to settle him down a little bit maybe give him some easier throws because his decision making so far has not been good on Third and short the power run here they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one and a great job by the linebacker you can tell starting to crowd the line of scrimmage get up there in the line of scage see it diagnose the Back Field get the running back on the ground for the tackle for the loss Marshall will be forced to [Applause] punt he'll settle for some pretty good field position and make the fair catch at around the 35 and we're about to get another look at this Hoke offense Jesse a very productive Drive last time wound and the defense is all over the quarterback and down he goes the defense just simply not fooled by the play action often times as an offense you're hoping the Run fake is going to slow down those pass rushers but man oh man they had their ears pinned [Applause] back they'll try to keep that sack from Wrecking this drive here on second and 15 trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here stopped after a pick up of four good run to get it out to the 34 they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it got him down field boy did he look as if he was going to go gets it down to the 37 ree you and I were talking about this before the game how is this defense going to be able to deal with all the speed they have offensively you saw them just rip off a big play and Jesse now their head spinning just a little bit give up a big chunk play and it's right back at [Applause] him nice move stay on his feet and a short gain on this run and that will bring us to the end of the first we're through one and what a back and forth battle between these two quarterbacks as we look at the stats lots of time left and we're ready to get back to it and open the second period got a little work done on first down now back to the line looking for a crease it's CLS ahead for a pick up of one to the 32 yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the tempo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge offense breaks the Huddle on third down looking to throw it's drones finds his big tie end he's got enough for the first down they'll spot him at the 24 yd line well they picked up the first against Zone coverage I think a big part of this for young quarterbacks out there is if you're going to be throwing into Zone coverage you got to throw on time you can't stare down receivers because the entire defense has their eyes on you so you can't Telegraph where the ball's going you've got to hold it to the very last possible second try to freeze Defenders with your eyes and then throw the ball into open areas of the field anticipating where your gu's going to be after the productive first down play it's second and six looking for a physical attack from the gun tackled but he has a first down looks as if we have an injury on that last play and we'll take a break to check him out and the H have it with a first and 10 give to the running back oh what a move they'll get him stopped just short of the end zone but they're in business here with a first down first down physicality wins football games being able to run the football and create balance and and right here just chews up another first down gives you another chance to maybe continue to run the football and I feel like this guy too is just an explosive play waiting to happen his vision his quick nipp and he takes it to the house touchdown Virginia TCH there have been miniseries novels movies long form plays that have been over in shorter period of time than that drive that was a marathon and that's just so frustrating when you're a defensive guy time and time again trying to the stops and they just keep making the plays and they punch it in for a touchdown demoralizing they'll try to attack one more on their score and the extra point puts him on top 21 to7 a 70 yd touchdown drive and they finish it off with a short into the end zone about to kick it away after scoring the [Applause] touchdown the returner will field it and try to set up his offense in great field position didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering hert offense coming out they're going to open this drive with a pass now we'll get a chance to see if they can that score trailing by 14 Jesse Yeah and at this point of the game I feel like offensively you should go back to what's been working for you in this game don't be afraid to dial up plays that you've already had success with running it and throwing it it's okay to repeat plays down 14 at this point and I would also say Palmer kind of understanding that my defense is not playing great so I know offensively I got to put some good possessions together here make something happen on this side of the football and they'll finally get him down after a terrific pick up well if at first you don't succeed try try again right it's been really hard for this offense in this game to run the football but they finally break off a big run there that could be the play they need to really generate momentum and get this run game going Marshall quick to the line he's looking to throw it the sure hands it's metap and a good job in coverage there as they stop it after just a few and offenses now they're really just counting numbers how many guys do you have out wide how many guys do I have out wide if I have enough guys to block your guys boom it's just built into the offense pitch catch let me get a few yards offense quick Tempo off the RPO complete finally pulled down but not before moving the change for a first down [Applause] this Marshall offense putting together a nice drive the give to the back creating some space getting just enough good blocking and they've got it up to the 47 yd line yeah this coaching staff they're getting this offensive line lathered up and into a them now they're letting him drive off the ball on first down on these running plays and they're getting chunks of yardage they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three they'll go to the ground that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there and that's what you're trying to do as a defense limit those damages when they run the football get them on the ground short gains to set your defense for positive situations down the road Here Comes This Home crowd as the defense tries to get off the field on third down trying to pick it up on the ground he's got first down yardage across the 50 they'll mark it at the 49 and I just love when guys know exactly where the sticks are you could tell ran with purpose finished through the sticks and got just enough for the first down and a nice job up front too right good communication everybody where they had to go hat on a hat work the double teams and get some push going to run it it's pain you'll take this every time five yards on the first down play Hey five to six yards a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at math but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't forget about the Run game keep them honest pound that rock halfway there first down it's second and five looking to pass it's Pennington nowhere close on that one as he got drilled trying to deliver the football and now they face third down it's hard throwing in the pocket man you got bodies and 300 lb dudes falling all over the place they're trying to hit you that time the pressure got to them and it forced the incompletion we'll see if they go back to the air after the incompletion it's third and five it'll be a draw and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this noain land and just a great job by the defense being Stout right that's your job be Stout up front stuff in the Run play make them get in more passing situations but do not let them run the football that's 101 stop the run first Marshall will be forced to punt he's getting a lot of work fourth time he's punted tonight how about this it's out of bounds inside the 10 and they're going to mark it right around the five yd line what a great job there running back searching for a hole rumbles across the 10 down at the 12 yd line after a pick up of six well this offense came into the game knowing they wanted to be physical they wanted to establish the line of scrimmage and they're running downhill right at this defense and they're turning out positive yardage early got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four keep it on the ground and he's knocked down but not before moving the chains part of the H's DNA to rely on that ground game sort of like a Kevin Jones type guy no doubt and I think it's always what's made these offenses go like the running game the versatility of the running game but you got to have that Bell cow that you can hand it off to to establish it oh he drops the football he had him right down the gut of the field instead it'll be second down well they're trying to hit the slant right that's a bang bang type play it's got to happen fast good throw receiver just couldn't come up with the catch after that last incompletion here's second and 10 from their own 20 here's the hand off makes his man miss and they'll stop him just short of the first down just inches away from moving the sticks these are the ones in the stands where you get booed if it doesn't work why would you run the ball on second and long you stink OC or you get the big Applause and you're like yes nice job keeping the manageable third down situation good call so tough spot to be in in second long nice answer nice run by the running back trying play action pocket starts to collapse he'll pull it down and run turns it on in Midfield and he's finally down sliding in safely after the huge pick up and you're seeing here the difficulties defenses have trying to contain this guy if you leave a lane open or you don't sack him right away you allow him to get outside the pocket he is going to take off and he is very difficult to tackle in the open field he's got running back likeability out in space looking down field it's drones that's it Fly and they weren't able to make the connection they were looking for an explosive play it would have been a high level play but it's a play this quarterback expects to be able to make when he has a guy open man these quarterbacks start practicing and doing seven on seven and having quarterback coaches when they're like seven years old eight nine years old now so even when they don't have wide open wide re you still expect them to fit that ball in there and make it happen they were really starting to put a drive together but after a couple of incompletions now they need a big play on Third and 10 connection to the right and the defense makes the immed tackle but he has enough for the first down and I just love having matchups out wide that I know can win guys that are so fast on the perimeter that threaten with speed and guys start bailing and getting out of there and on third down and I need that yardage I can go to him and he'll get the first down on the C back to the air one more time grabed behind the line it's Jennings he's brought down solid pick up but a little bit short of the first down the hes have moved it inside the 20 out of the gun the inside hand off to the running back fights through the pile and picks up a couple down to the 16 I'll tell you this is a running back who's very very dangerous and the defense did a good job getting him down there but they got to a great job gang tackling because this is a guy that can break tackles and turn those types of plays into home runs defense has to be frustrated the offense keeps matriculating and matriculating and matriculating the ball down the field they were all over him nowhere to go as that third down play turned into a disaster he tried to make something out of nothing but there was really nothing he could do on that play and I hope offensively that's not going to make them quit on this option play that that's a scheme that really puts the defense in a bind if I were them I wouldn't let that play stop them from trying to run it later in this game just drives it between the uprights and now the leads extended a little further [Music] that lead just keeps getting fatter in this kickoff team doing a little [Applause] running on the move from inside is five and the returner goes down the Marshall offense makes it way back onto the field after giving up that score now it's incumbent on this offense to kind of get a back and wor going Jesse in this game they got to put some points on the board here there's obviously a lot of football to go so it's not necessarily Panic time just yet but I'm getting the ball into the hands of my best Playmakers on this drive I hear you Jesse but not panic time have you seen my defense I mean I'm not trusting them to get a lot of STS so he puts a lot of pressure on this offense the completion short of the sticks it's second down hand off from the gun nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry man how fast did they get in there and make that tackle for a loss if you blinked you missed it nice job by the defense getting penetration everybody up near the line of scrimmage shooting the gaps quick getting in the back field getting the guy on the ground they're about to wear this punter out he's already been out four times and that defense gets to him and down he goes at the nine just a great job defensively making him go through his progressions and he really didn't have time to do it and that's exactly what you do in zone coverage you drop in your spots you read the quarterback's eyes make sure you take away that quick stuff and a great job rushing the passer and getting the sack Marshall will be forced to punt they may have to pay him overtime he's punting for the fifth time today yet another punt on the way got to make sure that hamstring stays loose he's been busy and good work by the coverage get the Return Man Down on the ground and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field so last time David they ate up some clock ran a bunch of plays but settled for the field goal yeah but they're still up reef and I like where I'm at if I'm on offense right now my job is to put another long drive together eat more clock and get another score just got to be better in the Red Zone this time around when they get down close to the goal line you need better execution to put a touchdown on the board here after the short completion it's now second down using his legs it's toon he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three maybe that stop shows this defense is tightening up especially in the Run game the offense frankly they've been able to do whatever they want to do they just handed the ball off this guy's having success left and right no sir no Moss get it together a third and long coming up here to the air it's drones unloads to the wide out all spot in the middle good solid pick up there now they can start to smell it with a first down at the 31 defense is about learning the plays third down what do they like to do how do they do it so far the offense having a little bit of success but the defense now you got to figure out what they're doing and the hes want to move quickly they'll throw it on first down and dropped it just didn't look the thing all the way in you know it's difficult for QBs sometimes when you're throwing to your running backs because they're not receivers you really got to be perfect with the ball placement you got to make that a catchable throw a little bit too tough for the RB on that one the incom completion on first down now they face a second and 10 from the 31 misfired on the last play they'll go back to the air and it just squirted through his hands he wanted to take off and got too anxious all right trying to attack the middle of the field on that in route nice job putting his foot in the ground he didn't Telegraph where he was going he was open he's just got to make the catch they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one trying to move the sticks on third down through the air a strike down field he's there to make the stop but not before he sets up this offense first and goal from the seven dude is just exceptional in every facet so fluid such a great route Runner and a big play there and money down third down find him I mean you want to find that matchup because he's going to win and gets a good release gets down the field you see his that's your playmaker that's your guy get it to him get the first down they'll go to the air feeling some heat snags it good throwing catch takes it down to the five as the offense tries to cash in nice job by the defense staying glued to him getting him on the ground as soon as he catches the football knowing he's a threat I'm not going to let this guy get out of my sights nice job by the D picked up some of what they needed on first down now it's second and goal from the F thr he got it he's down at the one and they almost had the touchdown pass on that one man and tight ends in today's modern college football are so difficult to stop because they're so much more athletic than they used to be today they're just like big wide receivers so defensively how do you stop it do you have someone who has the physical dimensions to match up with this guy oneon-one you might not and if you don't are you comfortable putting a slower linebacker on him or do you want to put a smaller DB that might not be able to tackle him it's a real difficult puzzle to figure out no you got to be aggressive here because if you score a touchdown the nail is in the coffin and this might be ball game and even if you don't get it they're not going to have to drive the entire lead everything's going right it is true as he puts three on the board and now the lead is even [Music] bigger so they get the field goal now to kick it away and you got a stop here and you go to halftime feeling really good about things and he takes this from inside the five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering Herd offense coming out these guys have taken and he intercepts it and it's going to be a pick six touchdown Hy look a lot of time left there's a little bit of distance right now being put on the scoreboard there is but it's so awesome when you're a defense and you study all week about what's coming and what routes to be ready for and then you jump the route and you make the plays and you just go get in that End Zone it is so [Music] beautiful getting set for the point after and with the extra point they push the lead out a little further so they got the touchdown now going to put it in the hands of their defense to finish off this half he'll bring it back from inside his five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 the Marshall offense makes it way back onto the field that's reeled in it's met and a nyd gain on first down leaves him with second and short well it's a nice job by the defender there closing the Gap with the wide receiver they're going to complete the hitch pass but he's able to run right up on him get him to the ground for a minimal game first the books time now to elusiveness his raw power this young man is the total package and his ability to catch the ball out of the back field is a differentiator a lot of guys can hit the hole this kid can hit the hole and hit the home run in the passing game and with that let's send it back to one of the best HomeField advantages in football Lane Stadium the hokes will kick it away to crank up the second half on the run from inside of zone five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering Herd offense coming out throws to the wide out complete down field and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play that's the one danger defensively when you want to play zone coverage because you leave a lot of Windows and pockets out on the field and if the offensive quarterback find one they could hurt you you saw it right there on the crossing line perfect play call for that big gain to open the drive now here they come on First and 10 quarterback on the keeper and the defense holds firm no pick up at all on that play nice job by the defense shutting down all the options making sure it wasn't easy to read nice job going to the quarterback getting him on the ground line getting set on second down the back goes in motion out of the gun they'll run it inside they could have used a little bit more there pick up of three it's third and seven if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on third down going up top grab near the sticks it's brown now they're starting to feel it they've got a first down at the 44 well the defense did a nice job taking everything away down the field but once the drag route was caught they just couldn't rally to the ball carrier in time to make a tackle and as a result new set of downs this Marshal offense putting together a nice drive running to the left they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one while the linebacker showing you read and react he knew exactly where that running play was going and he beat the football to the line of scrimmage and force the tfl lost one on that last one it's second and 11 they go to the draw and this one will be stopped for no gain and nice job by the defense a draw is kind of a trick you know get you to run up field but they sniffed it out did a great job stopped the play for no game third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off scanning the field it's Pennington it's complete he gets it oh so close to the first down marker but I think's going to be T short and I love QBs that understand when they need to put some extra sauce on the football you see your guys sit down in the zone running a curl boom fire that puppy to him get it on him now so he can catch it before he gets destroyed nice job by the QB put a little extra sauce on no no good and I guess they wanted to draw a little closer instead they're still way way behind and we're about to get another look at this Hoke offense always good to get points on a drive David but Chip Shot field goals can leave you a little empty and I think it's great to get points but the great teams get touchdowns in the red area you got to get out there this time and execute a little better on this drive you're absolutely right David generally the best Red Zone offenses are the ones that run the ball the best so let's see if they can be a little bit more physical on this drive now here on second down see if they keep tossing it around he's looking to throw and it'll be incomplete this is some physical pass defense yeah and you use these running backs so much in the passing game now and you expect him to make those plays for you to make those big explosive plays out of the back field just got to make sure he concentrates and see that ball come in lining up trying to convert this third and short from the 40 from the gun wants to pass looking to the big tight end it's caught down field plenty of room on that play and they find their way to the 36 defense is about feeling out the offense and what they like to do what are they going to do in third and short third and medium third and long so far the offense is winning defense is going to need to make some adjusts and the hokes will line it up on First and 10 fires to the wide out and the laundry drops as the pass Falls incomplete let's see who the penalties on the officials offer the deal and the coach accepts it they will take the penalty leaves it with the running back didn't get much done on that run he'll fight his way out and maybe maybe pick up a yard this defense obviously knows they've got to be able to stop the run if they're going to win this football game and you wonder if they've been able to make some tweaks and adjustments to try and take this running back away second down coming up leaves it with the back and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage doubt offense wants to keep running the football to win this game but I'm wondering if they're starting to go to the well too often they got to start showing some new wrinkles here in the second half this is a third and long looking to throw it's drones trying to burn this defensive back and trying to put points on the board on third down now they're staring at Fourth Down DB does an outstanding job here on the Deep pass locating the football no Pi able to swat it away pass incomplete the hes will punt this one away fourth time tonight we've seen this guy come on to punt and that my friends is getting the perfect bounce the perfect Punt and the perfect roll they'll have them locked down inside their own five they'll try the Run tough run across the five he'll get it all the way out to the8 Y Line listen that wasn't the greatest run in the world but it was very successful and you're making me honor the run and another thing every time you run the football someone gets tackled there's physicality involved in the game so I like when offens is commit to the run in the football no matter what the outcome is because those body blows do add up grabbed over the middle it's Chapman brought down to the ground but he has enough for the first down good job reading the defense by the quarterback on that RPO Fe he waited to see how the defense was going to play the Run he saw Defenders bite up close to the line of scrimmage and right away he knew he had the slant throw right in behind him it's first and 10 from their own 14 yd line looking for room it's h Houston ran right through the defender and now he's still running brought down at the 25 after he picked up 10 every offense wants to be able to run the ball and be physical especially on first down and you want to create second and short third and short or just get first downs like that run right there they'll snap it from the 25 here on first down right back to the well he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple you see all this movement in football now all the stem of the defensive line they're sliding right before the snap creating confusion for the offensive line then they're moving back and stunting really good job by the defense continue to move continue to stunt continue to get in the back field and make this life hard on this running back they're trying to slow that Rush down with the draw just enough there to get it to the 25 a pick up of two and these defensive tackles just eat people they swallow human beings when you get near them they're so big so strong those guys those running backs coming they just need a mid they put one mid on a running back and he usually falls to the ground just because of their sheer mass and strength on Third and long he has to throw for it and the ball comes out what a disastrous play defense just cradling that fumble and securing it those are hard for offensive line when they get beat you're going no look out for your Blind Side watch out but great job rushing the quarterback getting him on the ground and getting the football out a little extra bonus nice job by the defense getting nasty and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field after a punt on their last possession they are set up in plus territory this time and honestly it wouldn't have mattered if they scored a touchdown their last possession you've got to be able to turn the page and see this as a brand new opportunity to go get points yeah and your defense has set you up for in a position to get points right away now let's get this offense back rolling again create some momentum just get a few first downs and I'm in scoring position defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming the run up the middle trying to steamroll his way in not much room he gets one down to the seven it's looking like they're going to have to try to throw this one into the end zone here on third down David quarterback's got to be careful can't get greedy because you know these windows they close fast extremely tight Windows find your big body guys that you know can win in contested situations here on third down looking for the touchdown on Third and goal and SW down by the defense to stop the scoring opportunity yeah and third and short they choose not to run throw the football and I think a lot of that has to do with they know they're in field goal range they can take the three points on the board and here comes the field goal unit this kicker has already made a couple today and he'll try it from the right hash and the angle shouldn't be too bad from this distance it's good well that's just piling on not the penalty kind just the well sudden change situation you got to give this defense credit their offense just turned it over they held tight they didn't allow a touchdown they forced their opponent to Takei a field goal nice [Music] job they're really starting to extend that lead as they get ready to kick it away [Applause] again here he comes from inside his own five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 the Marshall offense makes its way back onto the field the give to the running back from the shotgun got it across the 20 and out to the 23 a pick up of four and it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your offense up in a good spot Sol pick up of four on first down it's second and six from the gun running back gets to give finds his way ahead for five and now they've got it at the 28 I think you run that play so you stay out of third and long third and long is not where an offense ever wants to thrive third and medium hey I'm good with that so you run that play to make sure you're set up for a good third down here they come trying to convert a third and from the 28 back to throw it's Pennington unloads to the wide out on target over the middle they got him free for a big gain to the 43 nice play design on that one you make it easy for your quarterback too because it's easy to see what's happening right in front of you over the middle of the field you can see where Defenders are dropping you can see where the soft spots are in zone coverage and just a really nice job by the QB locating his guide making an accurate throw power football with the Run you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six it's just so nice to know you can start off on first down with positive plays positive yards hand the football off set up a good second down after the productive first down play it's second and six right back to him on the ground and he is just engulfed at the line by this giant defensive tackle well you love to see that from the defense right it's like Ben don't break they've given up a bunch of plays on this drive but now that they're getting down close to field goal range you're seeing them start to stiffen up there yeah and plays don't matter anymore yards don't matter all that matters with these defenses nowadays is points and limiting them third and long and he'll try to throw for It Wide Open down field there to make the T but the big throw is good enough to give them a first down man that quarterback knew that was a tiny window to throw into and he just showed off his Cannon of an arm this Marshal offense putting together a nice drive they'll run it from the gun they pull him down at the 17 after a pick up of three after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven he's there to make the Stop and they threw it in reverse losing yardage on that play you know this linebacker is a special player because not only is he good making tackles in the open field this guy can cover and you saw a great example of it with that running back now facing a third and long back to pass it's Pennington fires into the end zone and he's got it down thundering great example of how a second half can really change everything for a team no doubt first half looked bad it looked like was was Bleak it looked like it was ugly but now you're starting to get it turned around that more drives like this is what's needed ling up to add another and and it's perfect they put together an 81 yd drive and the finisher an 18yd touchdown throw the kickoff team on the field as they'll send this one away from inside the 10 here he comes didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 and we're about to get another look at this hokei offense they Ked field goal on the last Drive Jesse they've got the lead don't make a dumb mistake but maintain your aggressive play calling yeah no doubt I think it's the play caller right now just taking a look at that script he's got in front of him and finding out where are my Playmakers who can we take advantage of on this defense to get a touchdown here da yeah and just keep moving the ball down the field just execute a little bit better in the Red Zone there's no need to panic we're moving the football and we got the lead and he really needed to hold on to that one but it was not loose and third down is coming well this defense knew coming in they were going to see some RPO and they were going to see some quick game a nice job there taking the throw away from the quarterback so they're facing third and short from the 25 they'll try to power their way ahead he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple this defense obviously knows they have to be able to stop the run now in the second half if they're going to win this game and you wonder if they were able to make some tweaks and some adjustments at halftime maybe getting some more bodies close to the line of scrimmage to give themselves a chance to come back in this game and the hes will call on their punt team they've been busy out there to punt for the fifth time today and the coverage team gets the returner on the ground Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering Herd offense coming out these guys touchdown the last time they had it now a chance to really dig their way out of this hole yeah and it's complimentary football right offense doing their job scoring defense getting the stop offense has got the ball right back Palmer go back to that last Drive revisit it rehash some of the same plays yeah and if you're the quarterback here think about where are my best matchups too we're going to have to throw the football at some point here so where do I want to take advantage of this defense and what areas of the field and where are my best opportunities and that's going to fall to the ground incomplete that was a physical match up there third down coming well that's just a great play by the defender and great timing it was the hit that forced that incompletion third down in this offense is already in a world of trouble they could really use a conversion not to mention multiple scores they're trying knowwhere to go and the ball is loose defense covering it up and not letting the offense get it back gets a turnover and that is exactly how you draw it up you get to the quarterback but you get the football out you hit him you try to R it out great job by the defense getting the sack getting the foot and Virginia Tech sends the offense onto the field after pting the last time they had it they ought to be set up for a much better result with this drive this offense better be licking their chops you're not going to start with better field position than this all game dve you ain't lying forget about the last possession of what we did you're already in scoring position take care of that football make sure you get some points snap's going to come from the 23 on First and 10 to the ground he's got it again defense there to stop him at the 20 let's give him three yard on that carry got three on first down it's second and seven the give to the back running behind those pads he gets a couple before he stopped at the 18 lining up to convert third down dropping back it's drones coming after him just threw that one away to avoid disaster after that incompletion it's now fourth and short in the Red Zone decision time if you're the head coach you just take the field goal or do you keep your offense on the field looking to get six so here comes the field goal unit again this kicker has already made three in this one and he'll try to knock it through from the right hash and 35 yds out splits the upright it's good and that lead grows even bigger [Music] that last score sort of like the finishing touch on a great meal they are oh so close to tasting Victory and getting ready to kick it away again he'll bring it out it's pain not nearly as much as he' hoped when he brought it out of the end zone he'll be stopped at the 15 good new I guess a lot of room to work with as they start this drive from their own 15 can't get him to the ground and they get him on the ground and that'll probably do it for the third quarter and you want to talk about his favorite receiver it might be everybody based on the number of guys getting touches and a chance to show off their hands in the passing game one more period to go and we'll see just how much fight they've got left in them picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down they'll throw it to the back on the screen and he goes out of bounds after coming up with positive yardage there love the execution there in the screen the running back shows pass protect pass protect last second turns around so he's able to get the ball the D linan have already run past him now he can turn up field for a big Gainer a completion but not quite enough for the first down third down coming for this offense they'll try to get it through the air Fire's on the Move can't hang on to the ball he had it right in his chest and it'll be fourth down well this guy must feel like he's run into a buz saww in this game he has been under duress all game long and that's a big reason why he's thrown multiple interceptions in the game too nothing coming easy to him it's hard to see the field when your internal clock is going off so fast because of the the pressure of this defense and that's why they find themselves down by so much here in the fourth he gets it past the chain and it'll be a first down for Marshall do you think that was a straight goal or they just sort of went with gut feel as to whether the defense was going to relax on that fourth and one I don't know but I know this as a coach I'm not giving a lot of freedom for gut will on their own side of the field if we're going to go for it on fourth down I think they probably understood listen it's fourth and one I like our chances to get one yard and they went for it and by the way they got it oh he had him right down the middle and it just squirted right through his fingers and they missed an opportunity for a nice play on first down now second and 10 dropping back it's Pennington he's got his man they ripped off seven on that one now a third down and three and defensively this is exactly what you want right you got the big lead so you can play Big Zone coverages just keep the ball in front of you keep your eye on the quarterback rally to the football gang tackle you're going to win this game these are the types of plays where offenses impose their will third and short from the 45 snagged in the middle it's Chapman they've got it to the 49 yd line and they'll move the chains really nice job there by the quarterback understanding it Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done this Marshall offense putting together a nice drive he'll come out throwing on first down it's complete tackle is made but not until he gets the first down hey man if you're going to make plays like that on slant throws you got to be able to make catches in traffic good strong hands by the white out there on the Marshall back at it with another first and 10 they keep attacking through the air throws to the wide out makes it connection and he's brought down after a nice game and there was no question in that scenario that's where the quarterback was going he knew he had his receiver in a matchup that he liked running a route where he would himself opening nice job between those two from the 22 on First and 10 used the play fake now to throw and the britz gets to him just like that often times with play action you're asking the quarterback to hold on to the ball a bit longer and you're asking this offensive line to hold up and pass throw a bit longer against this athletic front seven on defense it's going to be tough Big L on the last plate threatens to knock this drive off course it's second and 16 back to throw it's Pennington he's got it he's brought down quickly minimal gain there still a bit short of the first down well and here's the problem offensively because you're trailing by so much so late in the game the defense now is going to be playing big Zone coverage and they're going to allow you to throw the ball underneath in the middle of the field rally to make a tackle and bleed the clock it's going to be hard now for this offense to claw their way back in this one they'll leave it with him they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that play had zero shot they got to do a better job up front creating some running LS the running back before he could go anywhere getting tackle nowhere to go down by multiple possessions you can't come up empty on this drive they'll go for it on fourth down he'll try to throw and pick up the first down and he sacked a big play on fourth down to stop this drive he had nowhere to go with the foot fourth down you know he wants to make a play I'd like him to throw it up to be honest try to give somebody an opportunity to make a play who cares if I throw a pick it's fourth down anyways but couldn't find anybody to get the ball off defense surrounds hims him the ground with the sack the offense set for a first down [Music] play looking for space it's toon they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one that's exactly the start you want when you're on offense in this situation four-minute offense I'm not worried about scoring I'm not worried about getting a bunch of first downs I need two I need two first downs and I'm going to let that clock tick and I walk out of here with the D didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 they're bringing heat and he tries to get away but he cannot he's taken down he'll lose a couple that is how you start a drive meet the physical challenge on first down rush the quarterback get the sack on second down and now put him in a third and long situation nice job by this defense they come to the line facing third and long from the 25 to the ground with the back and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker yeah another good run I feel like we could put that on Loop Jesse just another good run another good run another good run over 150 yards on the day he's been the complete package showing off all his skills the hokes will bring the punt team onto the field they're up to a half dozen kicks today they're able to put a stop to that return right at the 30 yd line the Marshall offense makes its way back onto the field these last couple of drives Jesse have been about the defense making clutch stand I think for this offense they can stay aggressive knowing that their defense is going to bail them out time and time again here yeah and especially when you go for those fourth down situations you do that a lot of times because you know your defense can make stands make stops they did on that last possession for you couldn't make the play last time now it's second and 10 from the 30 looking for a man it's Pennington throws to the tight end reacted well to the tip but just couldn't squeeze the football instead of the turnover it'll be third down it's a nice adjustment by the defense here with a big lead in the game you're putting extra DBS on the field knowing the offense has to throw to get back in this one in the fourth quarter so your best cover guys on the field and they force an incompletion on the last one on third down he'll try to pick it up through the air he's missed three in a row now with that last incompletion and now such a tough situation late in this game you're trailing but now it's Fourth and long like it's one thing if it's Fourth and short this makes it even more difficult you got to up you feel really great about coach has no choice here the offense has to stay on the field down multiple possessions this late fourth down attempt coming and as he throws and it's incomplete way down field and the defense Rises to the occasion line gets set first down they go to the ground drives ahead for three to the 27 yd line after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven on the run it's toon he just won't take a big hit slides off guys makes moves he's down to the 21 I I like it just frustrate the defense get that five to six yards make him honor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football and run it effectively already in Chip Shot field goal range at the 21 but this third and short they're still thinking touchdown to the ground to try to pick up the first he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three it's amazing how play by a defensive end in the back field can really swing the momentum not only of a series but of a game sometimes all you're trying to do is create negative plays to get them behind the sticks a little bit to get those sacks to get those tackles for a losses you see so much stunting in college football up front with the defensive line because you know once you get one of those plays you got the offense right where you want [Music] he keep pushing that lead out and the kickoff team's getting some [Applause] work he'll start the return inside as five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 Marshall takes over the ball the Thundering Herd offense coming out got it in the middle it's Chapman and a good job of coverage by that defense just a short pick up you just got the feeling this defense is going to make it hard on them right they've got the lead it's late and they're going to try to tackle everybody in bounds offense is going to have to really work for this and be smart you got to attack the sidelines you got to throw first downs you got to keep this thing moving vertically down the field looking to throw it's Pennington fires to the wide out oh did he find a hole in the def and he's to the 48 yd line that'll be good enough for a first down and with that one he's now over three bills for the game and there's two reasons why ree he's made good decisions and he's been accurate throwing the football all game long here they come first and 10 from the 48 he's going to pass unloads to the wide out and that incomplete pass caused by the big hit on first down second coming the offense has lost the element of surprise here right fourth quarter they're trailing by a lot they're trying to go four verticals but the defense knows it's coming they do a nice job in the back end making sure that falls incomplete they'll spread the defense out going five wide on second and 10 after the incompletion they go back up top and he had it for a second but it just dribbled out of his hands it's been that kind of day for this offense they just simply have not able to execute they haven't been able to put points up on the board because of plays like that because of drops they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here the aerial assault continues another incompletion on third down after that incompletion fourth and long now in your own side of the field you're trailing in the fourth quarter what's your go-to play call here in the passing game where is the matchup that you trust in to come up with a big one to give yourself a chance to stay alive and win this game down in the fourth quarter it's too late for empty possessions they'll go for it on fourth down and is going to be batted down they'll turn it over on Downs offense set on first down they'll put the tight end in motion they'll run it out of the shotgun that's a really good job by the defense wrapping him up getting him on the ground take away that run game make him onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by the defense after picking up a couple at second and eight they'll go right back to the run and the defense snows him under after a very short game a third and long coming up here to throw it's drones pressure coming still on his feet trying to escape and get it himself and he's not going to make it the defense denying him the first down and the quarterback's in the pocket and he decides to take off and scramble and just couldn't get to the first down marker you could tell he wanted to pass the football maybe it wasn't there maybe he scrambled a little bit too soon but usually when you take off you better know you're going to get close to that first down marker get it fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way and the punt hits ground at the two and goes into the end zone he just missed pinning them right shadow of the goal post it'll come out to the 20 makes the grab it's medcap good job running that rout to get past the sticks because he got nothing after the catch and when you get Zone coverage and you're running curls and the wide receiver Sprints off the ball you know what happens that DB starts to bail and that wide receiver comes back and it's easy pitch and catch for the offense and they'll line up from the 31 on first down looking to move it through the air the quick out using him out of the slot he has just been Unstoppable and I love putting Dynamic athletes in the slot that I can move around that I can put in motion that I can I can make him go in or out I can put him off the ball so you can't get hands on him and they've really featured this guy today little bit more to go after that last completion they'll try to pick it up on second down getting some heat and the Freshman will talk up a well this defense thought coming into this one they could get after the quarterback but I'm not sure guys if they thought they'd have this much success everything they've dialed up has gotten home they've got six sacks in this game they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one dropping back it's Pennington unloads to the right makes the catch he's got up you know these throws of the peret of the field can be so tricky for a quarterback you've got to be pinpoint accurate and have great timing you didn't see it there from the QB down by multiple possessions they can't come up empty on this drive in the fourth quarter they'll go for it on fourth down makes the grab and he's got the first first and they finally get him to the ground an easy conversion for this offense defense not exactly the perfect fourth down call there Marshall back at it with another first and 10 he wants to throw trying to get to him can't find his man as he took a shot trying to to deliver that football and it'll be second down this offensive line is not going to like watching the film back uh tomorrow when they get the opportunity because they have gotten beat time and time again up front especially in passing situations all of the hits all of the sacks this quarterback has taken is the biggest reason why they're going to lose this game and the pass is incomplete but it might not matter flag is down and it looked as if the defense was roughing up that receiver and the defender just way too handsy on that last play you could see all the contact as the ball was in the air you simply can't do it and the referee's caught it going to try to pop one on the screen not a whole lot of room there on that screen passes it just never developed well it's important in this game this offense gets the running back involved out on the perimeter in space where he can do some damage that time they got it to him throwing the football picked up a couple yards but it gives the defense something to think they're about to snap it for the seventh time on this drive they're going to throw it again and the pass is incomplete thanks to a big hit man this defense has been ruthless all game long individual effort they've got guys up front winning their one-on-one matchups and they have been terrorizing this quarterback if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum wants to throw it's Pennington throws to the wide out and this is going to be incomplete on third
