the heat of the desert is where the sundevils Thrive welcome to Tempe Arizona Mountain America Stadium home to the Arizona State sundevils and the rich Legacy formed by the likes of Frank Kush Jake The Snake and Pat Tillman there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the Wyoming Cowboys taking on a team from the Big 12 the Arizona State sundevils for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth by David poock and Jesse Palmer and guys let's get this thing started the sundevils will kick it off to get us underway from inside is 10 let's see what he gets couldn't find a way to create that broken field as he stopped at the 25 the Cowboys offense takes the field for the first time today and there he is when you build a tight end you'd build one just like this especially with those reliable Ms Jesse yeah Reese he makes big plays in big games watch for him on third down in the Red Zone he has a chance to leave an impact in this game well it's so nice to have such a big body that when he's cover he's open right like it doesn't matter cuz he's got great hands and that big frame you can really utilize picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down give to the back defense fills those gaps he's got one to the 28 you know runs like this often times are like a boxer in a boxing match obviously it's not a knockout punch but these are body blows and as the game goes on these small gains are going to turn into longer runs didn't take long to need a clutch play on the opening drive it's third and seven wants to throw it's faota got the Quick Pass and it is a chunk play a huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end and a really good job by the quarterback being very decisive his match up he went for it he attacked it got the positive gain I would say he's going to find that guy a few more times today the Cowboys will line it up on First and [Applause] 10 used the play fake now to throw and the quarterback is snowed under often times with play action you're asking the quarterback to hold on the ball a bit longer and you're asking this offensive line to hold up and pass Pro a bit longer against this athletic front seven on Def it's going to be tough that's the last thing you want as an offense a negative play a sack on first down on second down he'll let it fly fires to the big fella and he runs through one tackle and picks up a few a nice job by the defense there tackling catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one and he just throws it away that is not what you're looking for on third down fourth down coming up it's so nice when you know it's third and long you know a pass is coming you worked on it all week get your feet set at the sticks understand that quarterback's got to be rushed get him off of his spot nice execution by this defense and the Cowboys will punt this one away a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work so the Arizona State sundevils offense will try to get something going with their first possession here are our impact players for this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching staffs this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play well they immediately pointed to these guys right here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the Box Score but these are the guys of the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed halfway there on first down it's second and five he's looking to throw grabbed behind the line it's scattero nice pitch and catch there and they'll have enough for the first down sometimes it's not about a fancy play design it's about just getting him the ball and letting him play especially nowadays with running backs being so good out of the back field you know they're going to catch it and there's so many ways to use them but exactly get it to him let him break tackles let him make play easy [Applause] decision after picking up a couple at second and eight he's looking to throw gets it out fast they're able to get him stopped just shy of the first down marker wow the quarterback knew he had to get that one to his receiver quickly on the end route did you see the velocity on that throw a completion but not quite enough for the first down third down coming for this [Applause] offense brought down to the ground but he has up for the first down you know you start day one of training camp running base runs you need a few yards you run these plays you need a first down you run these plays you rep them over and over and over again they're not sexy they're not pretty but in the end they're effective and they get you that new set of downs when you need them they'll give it to him again they'll pick up four second and Six coming listen I know that's not a huge game but those run plays add up they make you tackle the back every single play physically you have to get some guy on the ground it takes its toll throughout a fourth quarter game after the productive first down play it's second and six power football with the run and a really nice run and pick up there before the defense avoided disaster and stop the really big play that has got to be demoralizing if you're on defense because they just ran the ball right up the middle down your throats and they gashed you inside the 25 they'll snap it from the 24 first down it's a draw well you have to find a way to create some hesitation on defense when you're selling the draw play they just didn't do it well enough there yeah it's got to be the offensive line and the quarterback and the running back they all have to work together to to show pass pass set up front act like it's a throw for the quarterback not rush it but the defense clearly not for got in the back field got the tackle for a loss he is going nowhere stop at the line of scrimmage nice job defense you always hear people talk about tackling the catch you saw it right there there was nowhere for that receiver to go once he had possession as a result no game third and long coming from the 27 yd line you can make a field goal from here just don't take a negative play look to throw and he needs a chunk play he'll pull it down and run and he's not going to get there the defense Stands Tall and makes the stop now on fourth down they'll send out the field goal unit and he'll try to knock it through from the right hash and 35 yds out splits the uprights it's good and the first points of the day come on that field goal well this team knew coming into tonight's game they had to get momentum early playing at home they want to get the crowd into it so you get a beautiful drive here to start this thing you would have liked to cap it off with a touchdown but listen you set yourself up for a field goal you knock it through the uprights You' got the lead everything right now looking good so after the made field goal they'll kick it away and rely on their defense and he takes this from inside the five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Wyoming takes over the football and the cowboy offense on its way out that last Drive fizzled out Jesse they had to punt it yeah they did and David they're just going to have to do a better job this time around erasing the mental mistakes and just trying to solve the defensive riddle understanding what they're trying to do to you and attack them well they want to come out and try to get the Run game EST but up front defensively they made a play they gave up nothing on that one got to find some breathing room if you're going to establish yourself on the ground and there wasn't any that time yeah Rees I wonder now if this offense is maybe going to try to get to the perimeter of the field and see if they can use their speed to hurt this defense with the catch it's brown they stay aggressive and push their way out to the 33 and it's first down they pick up the first down on the drag route good job by the receiver knowing it was man coverage if he's looking he's booking he gave his back the eyes right away that says hey I'm not stopping put it out in front of me I'm getting this first down and this set of downs gets started from the 33 first and 10 wants to pass it throws to the wide out he's got it finally run out of bounds but he has this offense rolling with a first down receivers work tirelessly tapping that toe along the sideline and it just looks so natural for him yeah it can't just be Pat and go all the time right re just jogging down the field ball hits you right and stride you got to be able to make awkward body catches and do it getting your feet in bounds that was sweet from the shotgun the inside K this offensive line better figure out a plan for this deep tackle he is tough to block with one guy you might want to start double teaming him he's going to be a problem moving forward you saw all of his ability on that last didn't get much on first down it's second and nine [Applause] they're looking for an advantage in the running game to the right and a decent gain there before the defense makes the stop offensive linemen love to run the power why you run power you run power then you can play action you don't want that defense to be sitting there saying it's a pass it's a pass having the pass block every play you got to keep defenses off balance line is set on third down scanning the field it's faota quick completion on the out route they've got it inside the 40 at the 39 as they pick up the first down he might have expected to see this DB up in his receiver's kitchen instead nice little Zone and they pick up the first man offenses are getting so good reys at seeing the holes in the zone knowing you're in zone knowing where to sit down how to make it an easy pitch and catch for the quarterback and that's what it was on Third and sh and you want to talk about game tackling everybody on the defense run to the ball man that D tackle is a freak athlete did you see him come out of his stance and beat the offensive lineman getting to the running back catlike quickness didn't get much on first down it's second and nine hand off to Jones just a solid stop by this sophore and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it little bit at a time just to keep that defense honest if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum third and long and he'll try to throw for it out of the back field he's open they make the stop but not before they do their work up top and pick up a first down nice job by the running back there on that angle route against Zone coverage he wasn't in a hurry he was able to sort of find the soft spot in the defense and just gear down make himself an easy target the Cowboys come to the line with a fresh set of downs give to the running back running it in the Red Zone imposing their will and picking up five down to the 15 I I like it just frustrate the defense give that five to six yards make him honor the Run make him know that you're willing to run the football run it effectively halfway there on first down it's second and five motion from the offense they'll leave it with him tackled but he has a first down well the offense knew what they needed to get that first down so they dial up the running play and they get just enough to keep the drive alive and the Cowboys are threatening on first and [Applause] goal they'll try to get it in with the run and you can forget running in the middle against this defense stopping the run is very high on every defensive coordinator's list making the team onedimensional nice job stuffing the run on that play right there defense roll up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming running back goes in motion trying to surprise him with the pass Let's It Go to The End Zone can't make the grab as he was going for six right there oh what a missed opportunity for that interception yes I know he gets the pass break up but he had a chance to finish things off and he really didn't get it done but there's a reason he plays defense you know they put the guys on offense that can actually catch it's still third and goal to the it's saot and they fail to hook up on third down on Third and short in field goal range they dial up the pass play quarterback was trying to get through his progressions there was just simply nobody open couldn't make an accurate enough throw ball Falls incomplete Now setting up a big decision here on fourth down they'll send out the kicker here and the holder whe spotted on the 14 for a 24 yd attempt and the kicker delivers a three ball to finish off the drive and that field goal is going to tie us up here in the first quarter and we're all square as he set to kick it away the returner will field it and bring it back he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark they'll crank up this drive with the pass didn't pick up a lot there moved it Forward just a few I'll say this man in college football you see a lot of bad tackling you didn't see it right there that was an awesome job first off being there at the point of attack once the tight end made the catch there was no doubt he was going down great job form tack after that last completion it's second down from the shotgun now here's an inside GI keeps it moving for a three- yd gain to the 24 all right well the offense here they're trying to get this run game established they obviously don't break off a long run there but they're just trying to find their footing at this point how bold will they be on third down after that last run from the gun wants to pass and they can't make the play on third down and I like the aggressiveness on Third and short trying to throw the football take advantage of a look that they got they weren't successful and now it's Fourth and short territory who knows what they're going to do and the Sun Devils line up to punt it away let's see if he can help the coverage team out with this one he'll settle for some pretty good field position and make the fair catch at around the 35 Wyoming has the football back and here comes the offense always good to get points on a drive David but Chip Shot field goals can leave you a little empty and I think it's great to get points but the great teams get touchdowns in the red area you got to get out there this time and a little better on this drive you're absolutely right David generally the best Red Zone offenses are the ones that run the ball the best so let's see if they can be a little bit more physical on this drive after the run second and medium he'll pull it on the re that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there well the QB decided to keep it on that one and listen if you had his athleticism you'd want to keep it too almost every time they run these types of option plays but he's just going to have to do a good job of understanding when to hand it off when to pitch it and try to keep this defense on their heels and read his keys he's got a lot of talent just got to make sure he's making the right decisions moving forward hit the afterburners kid and he strides his way into the end zone touchdown Cowboys one of the reasons this offense is so exciting to watch they've got guys that are dangerous after the catch and if this quarterback gets through his ression David he hits you in stride these guys will take it to the house man it's your job to do the rest right you hit me in stride where I don't have to stop running I don't have to break down it makes it so easy the connection between quarterback wide receiver you can tell this is a good one and that's why they got six on that play they'll try to attack one more on their score and they knock through the extra point for the 10-3 lead quick strike offense on that three playay scoring drive and they close the deal with a 58 yd touchdown pass the kickoff team on the field as they'll send this one away and he'll just take a knee in this drive will start at the 25 Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making its way onto the field tackle is made at the 28 after a pick up of three that's a really nice play it's impressive when it's first down the defense thinks you might be running the football you still can line up you can get some movement at the point of attack and find a little crease for your running back got three on first down it's second and [Applause] seven they go right back to it they get him stopped at the 32 that's a gain of four and as an offense having success on a run play like that early in the game just opens up all the possibilities of your playbook moving forward play action running the ball throwing the ball screens anything is at your disposal at this point a third down try for the offense and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land guys we have Wyoming on top as we reach the end of the quarter we've put one in the books Let's have a look at our game summary lots of time left and we're ready to get back to it and open the second period the sundevils send out the punt unit this will be the second time they've had to kick it away signals for the fair Catch and hauls it in just shy of the 30 Wyoming takes over the football in the cowboy offense on its way out the hand to the running back defense there to stop him after a two- yd game to the 31 and sticking to the run I tell you what a lot of teams that are really good are really stubborn and they continue to run the football even with little success so this offense is going to continue to focus on running the football you can tell picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down back to throw it's ABA wide open downfield ripping off a pretty good chunk of yardage they've got it out to the 41 with a first down well this tight end he's got size and he's got some athleticism and he's very difficult to cover oneon-one defense is going to have their hands full with him today they'll put it in play from the 41 on first down quarterback on the keeper cre some space getting just enough good blocking and they've got it up to the 47 yd line well I'll tell you what just watching this QB in the Run game he's going to break one at some point in this game he's going to break a home run defense did a nice job getting him down there but this guy I'm telling you he's just a play away from taking it to the house keep letting this guy do his thing they'll give it to the back and the defense makes the stop after a minimal gain and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this run game being physical getting knock backs and limiting his carries will they keep it on the ground again here on third down looking to throw for it fires to the big fella the Cowboys get enough for the first down well they pick up the first against Zone coverage I think a big part of this for young quarterbacks out there is if you're going to be throwing into Zone coverage you got to throw on time you can't stare down receivers because the entire defense has their eyes on you so you can't Telegraph where the ball's going you've got to hold it to the very last possible second try to freeze Defenders with your eyes and then throw the ball into and he can't escape and down he goes That's a good example there of complimentary defense the DBS on linebackers are playing Zone they're playing their spaces and they force the QV to to have to hold the ball work through his progressions and then the pass rush they went up front a big play for the defense with the first down sack now Advantage d as the offense comes up on second down running it to the right they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one well the linebacker showing you read and react he knew exact where that running play was going and he beat the football to the line of scrimmage and forced the tfl some third down conversions tougher than others this one a long one on third down from the 43 looking to throw it's faota fires to the wide out that is just a sideline credit throw catch tow drag everything you want awesome body control and great job too knowing where he is is on the field to make sure he got his feet down in Bounds at this point this guy's been open all over the field and if I'm the QB man I keep throwing him the ball and the Cowboys will snap it on First and 10 pulls it and fires to the left just making a play getting it to the 23 yd line it'll be first down right second quarter getting closer to the half offense is still having a lot of success stringing some first downs together defense is going to need to f something out before they get to halftime down to the 23 for this first and 10 Ed the play fake now to throw snags it and he will score touchdown Wyoming defense has to be better on the back end they knew this offense was going to come out and they were going to challenge them they were going to try to push the ball vertically down the field they've now given up two touchdown passes in this game theyve got to shore up their play in the back half lining up to tack one more onto that lead and with the extra point they push the lead out a little further so it's an 80 yd drive and they finish it off with a touchdown toss from the 23 they're just about ready to kick it away he'll start the return inside his spot just never had a chance to shake loose and he'll be brought down at the 24 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark they'll throw it on first down he finds his man they stop him almost immediately short gain there and still a little ground covered to pick up the first and I love when my quarterback see zoned and knows exactly where to go with the football sees the wide receiver running the drag route knows when to throw it pulls the trigger for the easy completion and the Sun Devils want to move quickly on second down wants to throw it it's caught knocked down at the 44 but he got 15 on that one oh man did he turned that one loose and fired it into the teeth of the zone and you know as a quarterback race when you're throwing it to the perimeter of the field on these curl routes you've got to have some heat you've got to have arm talent to get that ball out quickly into the hands of your receiver before all those Defenders can get to it man this QB got a C he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple that linebacker saw the express lane right to the ball carrier and a great job by the defensive line getting some push making them use their resources on him linebacker comes free him to make in the back field for a tackle for a loss after losing a couple on that last play here's second and 12 they try to pop a run on the draw still on his feet at the 45 and an excellent Vision to find Running Room there and make a really good pick up before the defense put a stop to it just a great job by the quarterback the running back the offensive line sneaky little Devils what do they do make it look like pass sneak in the Run catch you off guard great play call by the offense the Sun Devils look to keep this drive humming from the gun they'll try to impose their running game pull down after a pick up of five but they knocked that defense back and they've got it down to the 34 I like this guy as a running back because he could run between the tackles and he can also go outside he can really do it all halfway there on first down it's second and five he'll keep it himself got the first down and more and it is a chunk play a huge gain on that one before the defense brings it to an end there's an example of the offense taking advantage of all the attention the defense is giving this outstanding running back remember he's one of the best in the game they're expecting him to get the football so the quarterback says you know what I'll just keep it no one's keying on me I'm going to get up field and find an explosive play takes a hand off it's scattero couldn't fight his way out of his Gras great job a contained by this defense and in order to do that the end man on the line of scrimmage defensively has got to be able to set the point and force the football back into traffic and that's exactly what happened going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down they'll try the right side he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple you know the runner just has to have a little bit more patience he bounced that thing outside a little too early and as a result lost yards really need to pick up this conversion and avoid having to settle for the field goal on Third and long trying to have a big completion here couldn't find a man and just had to throw it away to avoid a negative play nice job by the defense they're mixing up their look they're third and long in field goal range they go Zone coverage so everybody on the back end has the eye on the quarterback and they're able to break on the ball Force the incompletion and for the second time tonight they'll Trot out the field goal kicker it's good [Music] [Music] they'll kick it away after putting up a field goal on that last [Applause] drive from inside the 10 yd line he'll bring it back couldn't find a way to create that broken field as he stopped at the 25 Wyoming has football back and here comes the offense they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one so he get stuffed on first down and now you have the offensive coordinator thinking a little bit yeah we're probably going to have to throw it now in this second play what are we going to see defensively now that they know we're throwing might they Blitz us do I have to leave more guys into block there's a real cat and mouse game going on right now between these two coaching STS finds the tight end and he was was able to get away from one tackle but plenty of help was on the way decent pick up on that play that throw and catch a really good example of why coaches don't want a quarterback to get stuck on a particular Target isn't it David yep it's exactly right find the guy who's open because you got so many guys that have so much speed that can do so much damage on the field find my matchup get it to him let him do the rest nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry that's a great play by the defensive end the most athletic players on the field play defensive end Yes you heard me Jess Reese exactly what I said great get off great job getting the Back Field making the play the Cowboys will line up to pun it away this will be his second time they've had to kick it away he'll try to feel the Putt and bring it back returns like that are why you don't settle for the fair catch if you don't have to picks up just a little bit of yard to help out the O takes a hand off it's scattero really nice stop there from this senior leader yeah and the running back didn't get much here but you know you clearly want to always establish the Tipo run the football be consistent make that defense physically meet the challenge didn't get much on first down it's second and nine he's looking to throw got his man on the right and the defense holds firm no pickup at all on that play I know a lot of people are going to look at that play and say man that was a bad play didn't gain any yards but that could be the offense maybe setting something up the play callor is going to remember that last play he's going to remember how the defense reacted to it made a quick tackle they might pump that throw and then hit another player vertically down the field for an explosive play down the line just keep that in mind got it in the middle it's Smith plenty of room on that play and they find their way to the 36 well look that wasn't a touchdown but that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm in what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting through his progression caught in the back field it's Smith they make the stop trying to pick up just a little bit at a time to get to that first down marker well we knew coming into this game this offense was going to try and get this receiver involved and get him involved early so here they are just finding an easy completion it's not a touchdown but they just want to get this guy lathered up and get him into a this offense has a second down play quick strike complete he will step out of bounds but not before the big pick up and a first down this offense we see another catch by this guy this defense is going to need to do a better job of tackling the catch in coverage I know they want to slap the ball away but if you can't do it and force the incompletion you've got to at least make sure you're able to drag him down to the ground as soon as he catches the ball they'll run the counter he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple while the offense is trying to run the counter play into the boundary those pulling lineman though actually LED extra linebackers to the point of attack and as a result they were able to get a tackle for loss operating in the Red Zone here on second down right back to the well he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well they're trying to get that run play going to the outside but it's the defensive end who does a great job winning his one-on-one and forcing the negative play seventh play of the drive coming up but a long way to go on third down looking to throw and he needs a bunch reels it in in the end zone touchdown Arizona State one of the areas they really focused on with this receiver in the off season was we need you to make more plays for us in the end zone when we're taking shots we need to be able to step up up and make tough catches in David what a grab right there and I think a lot of that has to do with trusting your guy knowing where he's going to be knowing when he's going to sit down when he's not so being on the same page and then having a guy that can go get him just when the ball is near him he's going to make the play just like he did right there for six points P unit on the field and after the extra point they're down four 17713 that touchdown Drive covered 61 yds and they closed the deal with a 16 yd throw for the touchdown they lining up to boot it [Applause] away he'll bring it back from inside to SP he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Wyoming takes over the football and the cowboy offense it way out last time David it was one two three kick the last drive that three and out sometimes that puts your defense in a bad spot and you got to get a drive together here so you don't wear the defense out I just think David too predictable that last Drive they got to do something here to get this defense on their heels after picking up a couple it's second and eight from the gun the ground game running hard in getting six yards out to the 26 I know that wasn't a big huge play and everybody's not excited the fans aren't going crazy but those are the plays that in the fourth quarter matter a lot again making you tackle my back making you feel the physicality of the football game throughout so you get tired and get worn down in the fourth quarter it's the two-minute warning and we'll see if the offense can tack a little something extra on their lead before the break now looking for that first down on third short from the 26 they'll try to get it through the air right down the middle makes the grab good call good execution as they move the chains and they have a first down at the 38 man this quarterback is having a first half he's over 200 yards already heating up setting up this dude might break his career high in passing I don't know what it is somebody get stats for and the Cowboys have it with the 10 fires to the middle he's got an open man there to make the tackle but the big throw is good enough to give them a first down it is so good for an offense early in the game to get in a rhythm and to start stringing first downs together it makes the game really easy and puts that defense in a situation where they're starting to get tired they want to sub they want to get other guys on the field stringing first downs together like this makes it hard to defend it's caught down field and he'll be take him down but he does have enough for the first down and that's a really good example of why offensive coordinators script plays you know the down in distance and you know which routes can get you to the stick so there's no waste of time that coordinator got the play in early to his quarterback knowing that his players were going to be able to execute he wants to throw it again can't hang on and he'll tell you he really should have made that catch and he had an opportunity right in the middle it'll be second down yeah and he looked like he had the opportunity to secure that obviously open over the middle of the field but you know how that works middle of the field more Defenders am I going to get whacked when I hit this thing it makes those guys think a little bit you see more drops over the middle of the field quickly to the tight end and that is good versatility there and a big hit from the backer in pass coverage you know I know it seems like an easy pitch and catch but for the tight end there that route potentially changes if it's man covered so good job by him knowing zone I'm just going to sit down this is basically like a check down right let's just take the easy pitch and catch and keep this drive going can't quite make the connection there might have led him a little too much third and short in college football today you see so much more pass than you used to the offense stays aggressive and I think they stay aggressive because they know they're in field goal range they got that three in their back pocket and here comes the field goal unit for the second time tonight he's going to try to punch one through through from 45 yds away between the uprights it's good so they put the field goal on the board and about to kick it away and hoping that'll be the final points of this first half he'll bring it out it's brown stopped at the 17 and he's probably second guessing that return Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making its way onto the field wasting no time throwing on this drive bakes to grab on the left I really like this slot receiver because of his shiftiness and you see that on his route run really really nice job creating separation for his QB the hurry up now second down clock ticking he's looking to throw a strike down field they finally make the stop that's going to make those halftime stats look a little bit nicer as we head to the break that's going to wrap up the first half here and now we join Kevin with a halftime update thanks guys looks like we've got a terrific atmosphere there in Tempe and we'd be Miss if we didn't start this halftime report by acknowledging the sparkling play of this tight end the guy's like an aircraft carrier out there as a blocker and then when he releases and shows off that speed and Route running he's almost unguardable got to believe he won't be able to go anywhere in this second half without someone attached to his hip and with that let's send it back to Frank Kush field inside Mountain America Stadium the Cowboys will kick it away to crank up the second half he'll take the return try to get better field position nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark keeping it on the ground to open the second half he found a hole got about five he's down at the 21 hey five to six yards a pop I don't know if you guys are really good at math but that usually equals a first down every couple carries so don't forget about the Run game keep them honest pound that rock and the Sun Devils will hustle to the line he wants to throw here on second down got his Man Down field he's Off to the Races inside the T touchdown sundevils and once he found daylight it was Katie Bar the Door baby quarterback's abilities to read the field is huge and also the anticipation the timing to be able to throw the football Jesse and hit a guy in stride so he can get run after the catch and get in the end zone that was a nice job by the yeah it's critical David listen a lot of times down passes aren't thrown into the end zone you got to read the coverage hit the open guy and let him do the rest getting set for the point after and the extra point was good no incident there and we are tied up in the third aggressive play calling on that drive just two plays they get the long touchdown pass to pay it off after that latest answer tied things up just about set to kick it away [Applause] again from inside his own 10 he'll try to help out their field position really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 inside hand off hard running there he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and if I'm the running back I'm be like listen oh on can you give me something can you give me some space to try to make somebody Miss and not have another guy right next to me I'm giving the offensive line an earful I need some holes I need some space up front they got to do a better job not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 they'll try the Run gets it out to the 20 after a pick up of four you see they need more runs like that it's just it's been so few and far between defensively they've been in position they've been winning their one-on-one battles getting off of blocks and rallying to the ball carrier this defense has done a nice job slowing down the Run game thus far on Third and long he has to throw for it and the quarterback goes down at the 11 yd line this defensive end is an animal he already has two sacks and we're only in the third quarter I'd move him around a little bit more defensively so that the offense has no idea where he's lining up because right now man he is feasting and the Cowboys will bring the punt team onto the field three and out they got stuck in Reverse they hope the punt can bail them out slips through the line and the return man has no place to run no place to hide and a place to be tackled Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making its way onto the field can't hold on he had him right down the middle and he flat dropped it know that's a throw in the drag route where you just got to have patience you got to let your wide receiver clear through all the bodies in the middle of the field they just couldn't H up on that one and the incompletion brings up a second down they go to the ground only a couple there and now staring at third and eight they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here on Third and long he's going to have to throw for it he's got it offens has gain momentum with third down conversions like that they've got it at the 25 and I like having matchups outside like this guys that I know will win right away third down find my guy get him the rock he gets the first down the Sun Devils are in the hurry up he'll do it himself they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one nice job by the defense there getting a stop on the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage we know they've been burned a few times early in this game by the QB run but they weren't going to let it happen there lost one on that last one it's second and 11 leaves it with the back he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and that's a great play by the defensive end the best athletes on the field play defensive end you can ask anybody yes I agree Jesse ree see they agree with me same thing but you watch them get off the football make the play that's why you put your athletes there defense getting stingier in their own end of the field it's third and long from the 28 get it out on the screen and he was fortunate not to lose yardage on that play able to wedge it back to the line of scrimmage great job on defense they did their film study on third down they're trying to dial up the screen see if they can get these pass rushers way up the field but no can do they get a tackle for loss on the Play Now setting up fourth and this kicker has had a busy night the field goal unit is out there for the third time that is no good and after the Miss field goal guys we are still locked up Wyoming has the football back and here comes the offense the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out he just had no rhythm in that last drive so someone's going to have to step up and make a play David and get this thing going yeah let's find some juice find your guy find those plays that you know you can run inside out forward backwards get some first downs get some positive momentum after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and [Applause] seven quickly complete and they'll shove him out of bounds after the short gain he's just winning that matchup in the slot every time and when you put him in the slot ree he's closer to the quarterback it's an easier throw we can run in we can run out and really take advantage of his versatility of the guy that slot position here on third down will they go back to the running game they'll stick to the ground looking for the marker what a good run there he has enough for the first down you know they Pride themselves on being physical at the point of attack dominating at the line of scrimmage nice job there picking up the first down the Cowboys have it with a first and 10 he's going to pass makes a connection that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk explosive plays the defense finally able to make the Stop and I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to wonder if the receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down he leaves it with his back and he is stopped immediately by the big defensive lineman this is a defense that we know takes tons of Pride stopping the Run that's where it all starts and ends with them and you saw a great effort on that last qu got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 leaves it with the running back they bring him down and he's going to lose a yard on that one how about the defender being a heat seeking missile he was on radar lock he found the football and flew down with some bad intentions coming to the line of scrimmage at the 30 it would be a long field goal but they'd love to pick up a few here on Third and long trying to get to him nowhere to go with the ball and down he goes at the 39 yeah and in the defensive line you know third and long situations I'm rushing the quarterback you bringing the nickel a little bit more speed on the field and the defensive line gets home and gets the sack on third down and the Cowboys will try to pin them back with the punt he'll try to really get into this one and that punt will make its way into the endzone and they'll put it in play from their own 20 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark off the play fake on first down just a bit of a miss fire there as they can't make the connection last not on the quarterback I know it's not easy completing some of these out routes especially at the college level but that's a play the receivers got to make after that last incompletion here's second and 10 from their own 20 gives it to the back on the draw and knock him down after a gain of three to the 23 now facing a third and long from the gun wants to pass he makes a catch that defense got gas but they finally get him to the turf at the 47 and this defense is going to have their hands because they're going to need to be comfortable with guys oneon-one on islands in the perimeter of the field and they're just going to have to make better plays than what we saw right there they knew this offense was going to try to be aggressive got to need better effort in the back end for this defense moving forward one back in the back field he gets to carry that's a really good job by the defense wrapping him up getting him on the ground take away that run game make them onedimensional put him in passing situations really good job by the defense picked up two yards on that last one they need eight on second down it's a draw and they try the middle of this defense and that is not happening great job by the defense everybody firing off the ball hitting their guys holding their gaps running to the football nowhere to go a third and long coming up here from the gun wants to pass and oh what a grab on the layout on the right side it is plays like that that'll let you pile up some serious passing yards man what an effort I I mean the layout to be able to catch the football keep it off the ground nice job by this receiver and that's why this quarterbacks had a day guys making plays all over the field the give to the tail back and he does a really nice job finding open space and making a good gain before the stop is made yeah this coaching staff they're getting this offensive line lathered up and into a rhythm now they're letting him drive off the ball on first down on these running plays and they're getting chunks of yardage got eight on first down now looking at a second and two looking for space it's scbo finds a little bit of room give him a couple down to the 23 they missed a field goal on that last drive but here on third down they can't afford for this possession to come up empty they'll try to pick it up on the ground and the sundevils get up to move the chain that is how it's done on third down is should no doubt about it an easy hole to get through and clearly get the first down if you really want to simplify football the low man wins that time the offense got the better of the D easily picked that up the sundevils will snap it on First and 10 off the RPO complete they make the tackle but he's got a fresh set of downs and it's first and goal from the seven well offensively they knew they were going to have some match they could take advantage of in this one and all of a sudden this quarterback has now over 300 yards passing in the game defensively David he has got them on their heels and he's been showing you a little bit of everything he can throw it all over the field to all different receivers to his tight ends to his running backs really has the ability to spread it around and now over 300 yards still some time left and he can put up even bigger numbers and heck go chase some awards man get some postseason Awards get an All-American just put up a day defense rolls up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he'll run it to the middle looking for the End Zone give him about a yard on the play it's down at the 10 it's looking like they're going to have to try to throw this one into the end zone here on third down David quarterback's got to be careful can't get greedy because you know these windows they close fast extremely tight Windows find your big body guys that you know can win in contested situations here on third down wants to throw for it on Third and goal he's got it and still on his feet and the defense settled in to stop that one for a short gain I love playing man-to-man defense and I love getting up in your kitchen and jamming you at the line of scrimmage but it's really hard when they start running these Crossing routes and drags and ends because now I'm in Chase mode and the QB has a little bit of space A lot of times and those fast guys can create some separation and get a first down like they did there he got it and with that they've taken the [Music] lead so they were able to put up a three spot on that last drive and now the kickoff team out there as they prepare to put boot to leather Prim inside the 10 here he comes really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 Wyoming takes over the football and the cowboy offense on its way out they just didn't quite find the Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're the more physical team if you can threaten the run and then then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposal lining up from the 34 on first down they'll ride the hot hand that one did not go well tackled in the back field for a loss of six you see all this movement in football now all the stem in the defensive line they're sliding right before the snap creating confusion for the off line then they're moving back and stunting really good job by the defense continue to move continue to stunt continue to get in the back field and make this life hard on this running back cross the 30 out to the 33 and gain four on the play it's a nice game but the big theme Here is they just haven't been able to get the Run game going on offense they've been very onedimensional they're just not being physical enough at the point of attack when you've already set your punter out four times at least he knows is's going to get his varsity letter and his leg might get a bigger work out if they don't convert using the back as a receiver on the screen they play that screen nicely he tried to find his way to the marker but it'll be fourth down one of the things I love about this defense is they just have such great awareness and they're always communicating they understood the down and distance they knew exactly what they needed to do to make the tackle to force the punt that is so well done the Cowboys decide to pun it away they've been busy out there to punt for the fifth time today he'll feeli the punt and try to get some yardage they're able to put a stop to that return right at the 30 yd line Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making it way onto the field the give to the back he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple well the offensive line had everybody blocked except the defensive end he was able to sneak into the back field and get the tackle for loss after getting knocked back to open this drive it's second and 12 he's looking to throw right through his hand you just have to make that catch and it'll be third down well they're trying to hit the slant right that's a bang bang type play it's got to happen fast good throw receiver just couldn't come up with the catch let's see what call they have on Third and long from the 28th run the gun wants to pass he hurls one deep down the left side and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge gain if he could have squeezed it this is a point where you just got to be able to focus and the critical down and distances in this game like that third down right there when it's a good throw you got to make the catch you've got to be able to make that play and the sundevils will call on their punt team he will signal for the fair Catch and take it just inside the 35 these two quarterbacks have produced as we check out their numbers after three not only is the scoreboard on their side but so too is time as we open the forth wide receiver now comes in motion to the ground with the back you want to make sure to maximize those types of runs and he gets it out to the 41 you want to talk about making it easy for an offensive coordinator you pick up a bunch of yards on first down make that second down really really manageable that's a great job by the offense got six on first down now a lot of options on second and four running back searching for a hole they'll wrestleing down just short of the first down I don't even think they're going to bring out the change to measure this one this defense will try to force a fourth down on Third and short from the [Applause] 45 trying to pick it up on the ground found enough room to get it into enemy territory they're down at the 43 yd line and listen the offensive line has to do their job but a really good job by the running back understanding where his hole is go hit it get the first down don't mess around nice job following his hole getting positive yards maybe this will breathe a little life into this offense which has been flatlined in the second half here's first and 10 the give to the back and how about the efficiency on that one it'll bring up second and four I know it's sexy to throw the football but if you can pound it away and get these kind of gains they will just add up wear the defense down get first downs and ultimately get some points 6yd pick up on first down leaves him with second and four they'll go to the ground keeps the legs moving he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and it wasn't lack of effort by the running back he was trying you could tell he fought one guy off but another guy in his face right away just trying to do something the offensive line needs to do a better job keeping some guys off has Guy come on man take care of your running back they love to make this kick Easier by picking up a few on third down it's 56 yds out from here they've got it inside the 30 they'll mark it at the 28 it's first down well that's kind of the advantage of third and medium right is the defense you keep them guessing you could throw it you can run it that time they hand it off and they pick it up yeah and you can see the d drop back a little bit it creates a little bit of space the running back blasts through gets the first down looking to go up top on first down fires to the right it's complete touchdown Wyoming they've got the lead here in the fourth I think one of the most underrated things we talk about with a QB is timing being able to get the ball out of his hands to his receiver where he can continue to catch the football and run with it nice pitch nice catch nice play in the fourth quarter when you needed it for this team to take the lead now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic and the extra point is good and every Point counts it's now a fourpoint lead in the fourth about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown on the run from inside his own five he was looking for some Running Room but not much to be found as he stopped at the 18 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clicked no rhythm got off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here Palmer yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit on this drive didn't get much done on that first play of the drive it's second and 11 he's looking to throw finds his tight end at the 35 he's got R and he'll have enough for the first down at the 42 this quarterback obviously did a lot of film prep coming into this one he has been picking this defense apart with that last completion guys he's now got over 300 yards passing the Sun Devils come to the line in the hurry up you'll take four yards on first down every time second and six [Applause] he's looking to throw unloads to the wide out got him down field and this defense's head is spinning he gets it down to the 27 ma re you and I were talking about this before the game how is this defense going to be able to deal with all the speed they have offensively you saw them just rip off a big play and Jesse now head spinning just a little bit give up a big chunk play and it's right back at him the lone backs got it able to SC three yards out of that one somehow it's second and seven and it's just simple simple first down run showing your physicality setting your offense up in a good spot got three on first down it's second and seven they'll run playaction unleashes one excellent coverage and good use of the hands to knock it away well I know that one fell incomplete but what a day this guy has had thrown the football multiple touchdowns and he's done a really nice job with his decision making hasn't thrown any picks which has really helped keep this offense on schedule they've got a ways to go on third down from the 24 as this defense tries to force him into a field goal try looking down the middle can't make the play on the interception and man they were looking for their first pick of the game instead it'll be fourth down yeah and third and short they choose not to run throw the football and I think a lot of that has to do with they know they're in field goal range they can take the three points on the board and now on fourth down they will put it on the shoulders of the kicker to save them with his foot and the kicker delivers the three to salvage that drive and that's massive all the pressure on your defense now you've made the field goal you've got to get the ball back you need one more kick that's what you need and so the defense has to be ready to take the field right now play with intensity play with energy and get it back to the offense quickly after putting up the three spot the kickoff unit set to go looking for an alley from inside his own 10 he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 Wyoming has the football back and here comes the offense oh it's reverse that one did not go well tackled in the back field for a loss of six great discipline by the back side of the defense this is my Gap this is where I'm supposed to be ball goes away so be it I got to stay home stays home makes a great play for a loss they need something that goes forward this time on second and long from the 14 the give on the inside that's what you expect from a senior don't give them any extra yards great tackle there and this is a pressing time for this defense they've got to understand they're backed up a little bit they're going to run the football they don't want to make a mistake so I think this is the time I'm a little bit more aggressive I I got to get this football back to my offense because I'm trailing so I look for this defense to get a little bit aggressive oh he's going to try to hit him over the top and they wanted it all on third down but now dealing with fourth down and that is a frustrating possession for this offense you wanted to run the football maybe take some time you did the opposite got in a bad situation through the football stop the clock not how you manage a game late in the fourth quarter and the Cowboys will punt it away on fourth down doesn't say much for your drive when you're looking forward to the punt a fair Catch taken just inside the 40 yd line Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making it way onto the field they'll come out on this drive and let it rip all kinds of room to throw that one in there he got loose almost house it finally dragged down at the 32 well how about the offense setting that play up we've seen earlier in the game a couple shorter throws they're just trying to suck those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage anticipating that they would get an opport to take a shot they called the perfect play at the perfect time right there off the play fake on first down to throw fires to the tight end no chance to run but they still move it forward you know we joke that the tight end's always open David but play action almost makes it impossible to keep them covering and yeah because those guys they're such good blockers most of the time they're big and physical and they sell block for a second and then they run open and they find holes in zones or they get good matchups and man those tight ends nowadays are nightmares for defenses to try to stop well the good news is he did a nice job reading the coverage he knew exactly where to go with the football that time just a little bit too much on that pass you wonder if that's just nerves he's got to settle himself down a little bit third and short from the 26 pretty easy field go goal range but they'd love to pick up the first they'll give it on the counter and they did not let him reach the line to gain it'll bring up a decision here man down on the play as the officials take a break to let him be checked out so this is going to be Rife with drama and overflowing with pressure on this field goal try with this one they can Vault into the lead he's splits to the uprights and puts three on the board and they've regained the lead all field goals are not created equal guys kicks in the fourth quarter to take the lead they just seem to carry so much more weight so give that young man credit for getting out there and knocking that thing through the uprights all the pressure all the eyeballs on him he delivered so after the last Drive with a field goal the kickoff team out there to send it away on the move from inside is five not a lot of space to be found good Hustle by the coverage team and they stop him at the 21 Wyoming takes over the football in the cowboy offense on its way out here's the hand off he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three they're trying to run the ball on first down guys but just nothing doing up front their offensive line got blown up on that play there was nowhere for that guy to go not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 to the air it's faota using the quick game they bring him down but a solid pick up to put them in position to pick up a first down Hey listen on offense just take what the defense gives you quarterback looks out wide the DB way off of the receiver throw him the easy hitch pass you'll take that completion they'll try to move the chains on Third and short from the 27 from the gun wants to pass couldn't quite haul it in they almost had their first pick here late in the game wow that quarterback is lucky there if you're going to take a chance like that on third down in your end of the field you better be right because that should have been picked and returned for a touchdown this offense is lucky now they're getting a chance to punt this ball away fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way might have thought he'd want to try to pick up a few yards there but he's content with making the fair catch right around the 35 yd line hand off to the single running back and they try the middle of this Stout defense and they rise to the challenge boy there wasn't much room to wiggle for that running back there none at all great job by the defense getting the Back Field quickly closing up all the holes Nowhere to Run they got nothing on the last play it's second and 10 trying to make that Rush think on the draw play here he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple defense doing their job getting that last stop and now third in California not a lot of play calls to convert this so defensively let's get off the field now the clock's running we need to give it back to our offense with as much time as possible third down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off almost intercepted and what a momentum swing that could have been but they still force a fourth down that play call is going to force a lot of people to scratch their heads because you've got the lead late why aren't you just running the ball when you throw you risk having interceptions like that right there that should have been picked and the sundevils will send out the punt unit they'll look to pin him deep waves the arm for the fair Catch and the catch is made close to the 30 yd line Wyoming has to football back and here comes the offense David the punter got some work last time they'd like to keep him on the sidelines in this drive yeah it's not something you want to say very often you don't want the putter out there this offense needs to get back lathered up and get a little bit more of a rhythm best way to do that identify where your best players are and just get them the football give these guys some touches to Kickstart this offense now on second down and short back to throw it's faota receiver looks it in it's complete and he's knocked down immediately but not before he moves the chains knowing that your man can make the catch against his Defender that was a big play but it can set you up down the line to be able to take advantage yes get it to him as fast as I can when I see him open he runs the little hitch get it to him so he can make a little bit of yards after the catch and eventually that little gain he's going to bust one of those with his athletic ability and these little touch passes man they're just the easiest completions ever for quarterbacks Palmer I bet you would have loved being able to just Flip It Forward that counts as to your completion percentage which is good and then it's all run after the catch so pretty easy for a QB have been the only allamerican in this booth if I were allowed to had push passes when I was playing quarterback I'll tell you that it is so hard to defend it's so hard to seal that edge especially when this guy's Full Speed Ahead coming around the inside and they'll bring him down after a short pick up they're staring down the defense and this crowd on this huge huge third and four trying play action throws to the wide out he can't make the catch he was open on the crossing route and instead they're facing a fourth down after that incompletion fourth and short now on their own side of the field I think there's a lot of coaches in normal circumstances that would stay conservative and just punt the ball away but you're trailing here in the fourth quarter I think the offense needs to stay out on the field and you got to go for it fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way special teams coming through as they pin them back they'll mark it dead at the 10 Arizona state is going back on offense and they come out looking for a spark here's another opportunity Jesse to stretch out this lead after punting last time I think it goes back to your Playmakers reys I think it's finding the guys that have been working for you earlier on in this game and getting them the football yeah and there's obviously no need to panic I mean think about it you got the lead you got the football you got to be smart with the football make your plays put a good drive together here they'll probably bleed every second possible off this clock before they snap it here's a quick throw out to the left and the defense had that one well covered just a short game there Slants against man that wide receiver has to win right now right now at the line of scrimmage against that DB playing man coverage quarterback timing with the wide receiver put it on the money wide receivers probably still going to get hit too and got to hold on to that thing wants to throw on third here's an interception oh did they need that turnover and he's wrapped up after a solid return on the pick let's go talk about leaving the door open yes please you think they might run the clock out run the football consistently no put it in the air we forced the interception great job by the defense when they needed it the most they came through Wyoming takes over the football in the cowboy offense on its way out they had to punt it away on their last possession but man what great field position time I mean this is awesome like last possession didn't go great now you're set up in an opportunity to get some points start thinking about what plays I like Jesse as I cross the 50 there are a lot of offensive coordinators out there David and in this position they like to take a shot right away and try and capitalize on this field position first down here with time for maybe one more play until the two-minute warning we reached the two-minute warning and the defense needs to come up with a stop to close this thing out already in a great spot to kick a field goal it's first and goal and a late touchdown would be even better he'll try to get it in with the Run he steps and powers and works his way they finally get him down at the two now the offense tries to punch it in on second and goal dropping back it's faot touchdown Cowboys they move on top here in the fourth and some of these guys make it look so easy but these are tight windows down here man there's not a lot of space on the field and he drops back knows exactly where he's going with the football throws it in there makes the play and more importantly now his team is in the lead in the fourth quarter setting up for the Pat and when he gets this lead every Point [Applause] matters and the extra point is good and the lead is five here in the fourth quick strike offense on that three play scoring drive and it was finished off with a two- yd touchdown toss just about set to kick it [Applause] away here he comes from inside his own five and he winds up right where he would have on the Touchback goes out of Bounds at the 25 Arizona state has the ball back and the offense making its way onto the field there's plenty of time to work with here but they have to be highly efficient in their attack Jesse so comes down to the quarterback position too Reese don't let the moment get too big play within yourself David because this guy's practiced the situation before no doubt use the sidelines they're your friend I don't have to take deep shots throw beyond the first down marker so I can stop that clock for a little bit and possibly use my timeouts got his man and he'll get out of bounds it's a first down they in plus territory and now threatening to get the score well that's exactly why you practice these two minute situations the quarterback knew actly where to go he's trying to work the sideline save some clock great route by the receiver getting open making the catch getting out of bounds and this drive is off to a pretty good start wants to throw on first down looking deep right on the money to the outside he dragged the toe and how about the ball placement only the receiver could get it what a great job outside working that route not only did he get to the sticks to make sure he got the first down but but also was able to get himself out of bounds to stop the clock you could not do that any better in a two-minute situation looking to throw it again safe completion on the screen great job in this two-minute thrill as he gets out of bounds keeping the clock on their side as they're trying to pull it out he knew exactly what they needed there made the play and got out of bounds to sto the clock and you got to keep this turbo mode on right we got to keep going fast the clock's running down fourth quarter need a score great execution to get the first down we need a lot more of this on this drive turning to the running game on first and goal he pushes it forward all the way to the two yd line now it's second and goal he's looking to throw touchdown Arizona State and they've got the lead
