welcome to Houston Texas and the house bill yman and Andre wear built home to the Houston Cougars where the fans are ready for liftoff there's just something about the night cap after a day of wall toall football it just seems this is when chaos ensues as we'll see a squad from the Mountain West the unlb rebel taking on a team from the Big 12 the Houston Cougars for EA Sports college football I'm Rees Davis joined here in the booth by David and Jessie Palmer and guys let's get this thing [Applause] started the rebels will put total Lea and we'll get started fielded In The End Zone it's Jenkins didn't find Anye that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 the Cougars offense will start this game off when this guy comes onto the field David he seems to bring the it factor with him so much fun as a play caller to have a guy you depend on you trust you know Palmer you're going to get the best out of this young man he's also one of those guys David who just elevates everybody else around him right all 10 guys in that huddle offensively just seem to play better knowing they've got confidence in this guy good spot after that seven yd pickup on first down it's second and three grabbed in the back field it's Williams tackled at the 29 let's give him five on that one it'll be a first and 10 from the 29 takes a hand off it's Jenkins finding a way to put that foot in the ground and get it up to the 37 yd line they can really be aggressive after that last play it's second and three wide receiver now comes in motion touch pass on the Jet Sweep tackle is made but not until he gets the first down hard earned yards man you got to get these first downs any way you can and sometimes it's not going to be easy and you can't just do it conventionally handing it off this offense is going to have to be creative football's a game of inches and you've just got to find the angles to give yourself an advantage that creative play call right there really helped them out the give out of the gun creating some space getting just enough good blocking and they've got it up to the 47 yd line halfway there on first down it's second and five [Applause] they'll go to the ground able to pick his way forward for a decent game before the defense gets him down after the last run would you just give it to him again on third down they'll try to power their way ahead finally run out of bounds but he has his off rolling with a first down well he was able to gash him on that play you just give this guy one inch one little crease he puts his foot in the ground and he gets North fast the Cougars will line it up on First and 10 to the ground he's got it again had to work to pick up three down to the 33 yd [Applause] line got three on first down it's second and seven looking for room it's Jenkins and the defense stops him just short of the first down maybe needed a few more chain links to move the s this opening drive methodical efficient they'll snap it for the ninth time on Third and short they'll try to run for it he'll come through on third down as he's got enough and they'll mark it at the 23 you know this is a running back who wants the ball and he wants the offense to run through him really nice job there on the third down of this opening drive for his offense I can't wait to see what kind of game this guy's going to have down to the 23 for this first and 10 used the play fake now to throw snagged in the middle it's Williams he'll be stopped just short of the end zone but they'll have it first and goal when these wide receivers work the middle of the field so much of this is field understanding where the holes are in the zone understanding how to get leverage on a man and these wide receivers are dangerous nowadays because they do it so fast and see that so quick and make those plays over the middle Smith wants to throw stag In The End Zone touchdown cougars you want to keep your offense on the field wear down the defense put that tape on and show it in a clinic that's the way it's done and as a defense man there's nothing more demoralizing you can handle it when you give up three but to give up a down at the end of a long drive you're already exhausted you've already been pked the whole way down the field man that's frustrating P unit on the field and the P makes it seven nothing they put it in the end zone with a 12 play scoring Drive they closed it going up top for the final few inches in the score lining up to cover the kick after that touchdown [Applause] Drive he'll bring it out from inside his own 10 able to find enough room to get it out across the 25 he's brought down at the 26 so the unlb rebels offense will get the ball for the first time here are our impact players for this game and it goes beyond executing an assignment to make an impact in the game yeah obviously we were talking to both coaching staffs this week and we asked them who needs to step up and play well they immediately pointed to these guys right here they are the key for their respective teams yeah and they don't always show up in the Box Score but these are the guys of the leaders these are the guys getting everybody organized and have to play well for their team to succeed after the three- yd pickup they come to the line Second and seven tring play action unloads to the right can't quite make the connection there might have him a little too much you know it's a good decision by the QB because his intended target wasn't open so throw it out of bounds and you can live to play another day here on this drive Ball's at the 29 defense can taste getting off the field it's third and long back to throw it's Fernandez they're setting up the screen and it's pretty obvious there was a big hole in that screen and the defense ran right through it and on those screen passes I want those defensive lineman to run right up the field and I want to throw it right over their head where I got some space and I can get my running back going that is the opposite of what happened right there there was no space he couldn't even get going fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way now on the return he's got great speed returns like that are why you don't settle for the fair catch if you don't have to picks up just a little bit of yards to help out the O from the gun he leaves it with the back and this one will be stopped for No Gain well they're trying to run the football there just nowhere to go they got dominated up front at the point of attack got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 he's got it again Sweet cut [Applause] there trying to up first down out of the shotgun on third down got the Quick Pass nice job to pick up the first down and they'll spot it at the 42 really nice job there by the quarterback understanding that it's Zone coverage on third down you're going to have to find someone working into a soft spot get the ball out of your hands quickly make an accurate throw and pick up the first well done Houston getting set looking at first and 10 they'll leave it with him and I think they'll give him two on that one second and eight coming up tried to pound it on first down now back to the line from the gun leaves it on the inside with the back across the 25 he's got room that is exactly what you're looking for when you talk exposive plays the defense finally able to make the Stop and the Cougars moving quickly to the line [Applause] the give to the back and he'll pick up one it brings up second and nine six play of the drive coming up they'll ride the running back and leave it with him and he's sprinting he it all the way touchdown Houston hello follow the blocker the offensive L will take you to the Hallelujah land and I tell you what most of the time ree it requires a little bit of skill to find that hole and you know Slither through a little crack that was not a crack that was wide open didn't take a lot of vision because the blocking was outstanding now they'll line up for what they hope is automatic and the extra point makes it 14 nothing that drive covered 57 yard for the touchdown and they finished it off with an exclamation point running it in from the 19 about to kick it away after scoring the touchdown [Applause] he'll start the return inside his five nice job by the kickoff team everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 the UNLV offense ready to return to the field they'll run the option nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry to say this has been a slow start is a bit of an understatement and they really need to get it going here Jesse that's right the opponent they're firing all Cinders right out of the gate offensively for this unit they've been slow and struggling they need an explosive play to wake themselves up and it's just the first quarter so it's not the end of the world you've seen slow starts but you got to continue to pick and pick and pick until you find that play or or that scheme that you can use against this defense yeah I think the running back kind of went rogue on that last running play I'm not sure it was designed to go that direction he tried to make it happen on his own unfortunately ended up on Third and long doesn't need to take the check down couldn't find a man and just had to throw it away to avoid a negative play that's why it's so important for this defense to win first in second down you set up third and Longs like that you can show your exotic looks you can get the pass rush going everybody on the back end expecting throw that's how you force incompletions and Force fourth downs and the rebels will punt this one away three and out and not much choice but to get rid of the ball surprisingly makes a fair catch just outside the 40 yd line here comes the Houston offense once again wide receiver coming across in motion to the ground with the back creating some space getting just enough good blocking and they've got it up to the 47 yd line solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six they'll give it to the back a strong tackle and wrap up from the Junior [Applause] in the dead center of the field as they try to convert this third and short Smith dropping to pass got his just what they were looking for and he's got him set up in business at the 35 with the first down defense is about learning the plays third down what do they like to do how do they do it so far the offense having a little bit of success but the defense now you got to figure out what they're doing Houston coming to the line with a new set of downs from the gun they'll give it on the inside they get him down but he does pick up three to the 32 yd line got three on first down it's second and seven using his legs at knee they get him stopped at the 26 but not before he picks up five yards third and short from the 26 pretty easy field goal range but they'd love to pick up the first they'll put the tight end in motion they'll try to drive ahead on Third and short get him on the ground after he gets enough to move the sticks offensively you going to take four to six every play yes please sign me up for that I'm going to take that every single time great job by the offense staying patient staying true to who they are you want to run the football you want to be physical you want to establish yourself check check check coming out on first down with the play fake he snares it in the end zone touch Houston and a really nice job understanding I got to get to that Gap where there's a little bit of open space in the middle of the field when I run that post route QB lays it out for him and he catches it gets two feet in bounds in the end zone touchdown he'll try to tack on one more and with the extra point they're up 21 to nothing they marched 58 Y for the touchdown on that one and they finish it off with a touchdown toss from the 23 kickoff team lining up to send this one away on the run from inside his zone five didn't find any crease in that kickoff coverage and he'll be stopped at the 17 un LV ready to go back to work on offense they just didn't quite find the Rhythm on that last Drive Jesse they had to punt it I think they got to be more physical David I think up front they got to do a better job getting blocks and establishing this running game and how easy does football become if you're the more physical team if you can threaten the run and then run play action it opens up the whole offense at your disposal and they'll come to the line just needing a few chain links for a first down wide receiver shows motion leaves it with the back nowhere to run on that one he loses four on the carry goodness that is the way you blow up a play quick fast and in a hurry hair on fire was direct that had to be a blown assignment coming to the line of scrimmage on third down dropping back it's Fernandez they're working that left side and the completion gives him a fresh set of downs and keeps this drive moving that's got to feel really good for this quarterback it's early in the game so these third Downs are big you're trying to get your offense into a rhythm and a flow nice job reading the defense beautiful and this set of downs gets started from the 33 first and 10 they move the tight end all over out of the gun they'll run it inside stuffed in his tracks but strong enough to pick up one to the 35 you definitely want to commit to the Run game you you want to establish the Run game you want the defense to honor it but if it doesn't work a little later down the road you might think about airing that out didn't get much on first down it's second and nine they'll run it behind the big guys on the left one step WRA twep squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground and now on third down after that last run the snap sets up the throw setting up the screen and boy is he close to that first down maybe just a couple of inches short they were really hopeful he could make a guy or two Miss and pick up the first down but he comes up a little short yeah and it's great defense it's defense understanding where the sticks are not missing tackles getting the guy on the ground quickly really nice job by the defense understanding the situation fourth down and the punt team sends it the other way fair catch called for and that's the end of the quarter and Houston has the lead they came out and jumped on them early in the first let's take a break and look at the first quarter stats this could be a pivotal moment in this game as we open the second period and they try to find a way to answer off the play fake on first down to throw and this will be incomplete a big hit there forces second down couldn't make the connection last time let's see if they throw it again out of the shotgun they go to the ground it's that hole for four and gets it out to the 16 how bold will they be on third down after that last run Smith wants to throw fires to the wide out and that's incompleted Defender all over him knocked the ball to the ground fourth down coming up that's one this defense takes a lot of Pride on they like tackling the catch and they like being around the ball that time he was in proximity to knock that thing loose nice physical play Houston sends the punt team onto the field now a fair catch is called for and may just shy of Midfield guys the Running Rebels offense ready to go back to work they've got nothing done so far and they already find themselves in a three possession J yeah and as a head coach you're wondering what didn't I say what didn't I do to get my team ready to go because we look like we're sleepwalking at this point D yeah nothing went well in the first quarter you just say refresh like let's try to find a way now chip into this lead try to make it somewhat manageable when you get to the half not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and [Applause] 13 quarterback on the keeper tried to find some Running Room but they get him stopped the offense thought they had a good look to run that play into with the QB but there's just an example of a Defender winning his one-on-one battle and making a tremendous play great effort by thaty if they can convert here that type of play can really give you a shot of momentum on Third and long a check down would be the last resort and incomplete on the Deep ball QB overthrowing an guy like that that is just a kick in the gut for this team the rebels will line up to punt it away a fairly short distance here toward the sidelines not his best work Houston sending the offense back onto the field they'll have another opportunity to extend this lead after punting last time David and it's important to put that punt behind you it's it's over let it go get back to what you were doing that built this lead yeah and defense obviously they won a few Downs uh that last drive so we got to put them on their heels here maybe mix up a few Personnel groupings and try to show them some pictures they haven't seen yet after the misconnection it's second Down Smith dropping to pass he makes a catch building momentum picking up a chunk of yard moving the chain out to the 34 and I love the awareness by the wide receiver on that play because I'm not sure that route was supposed to be that deep you got to wonder if the receiver decided maybe to adjust the route a little bit to make sure that he got the first down they'll try the Run fights off a Defender they stop him cold maybe gets a yard to the 34 and you want to run the football that's okay you'll take some of these but if they start to add up down the road obviously you might want to think about airing it out a little bit didn't get much on first down it's second and nine he's looking to throw quickly out to the tie stopped at the 44 but he got 10 on the play right second quarter getting closer to the half offense is still having a lot of success stringing some first downs together defense is going to need to figure something before they get to Half Time this Houston offense about to snap it on first down again he'll come out throwing on first down and he dropped it it looked for all the world like that would be a catch and he just got too excited well I don't know if the big fella got freaked out because he was so wide open on that play but that is a catch he has got to make for his quarterback really need positive yards on second down after the incompletion they'll snap it from the 44 going to run it it's Jenkins and he finds Some solid space makes a nice before the defense is a to him after the strong run on second down third down coming do they do it again they stick to the ground looking for the marker that just never had a chance as they controlled the middle of the field and stopped him in the back field on third down great play by the defense there and listen they got to do more of this running backs obviously had a lot of success they got to continue to stop this run game be physical and not let this guy beat him Houston will be forced to punt this will be the second time they've had to kick it away not going to risk a return here he'll make the fair catch the UNLV offense ready to return to the field they just haven't been able to get anything going and they better get started or it's going to get away from them David yeah and these are the weeks that you really wish that you were playing a video game and you could just reset the console start over Jesse and make something better happen early they just look like they're sleepwalking in this first half and it's not just one guy they just haven't been playing collectively as a unit the head coach I'm considering starting to give some other dudes some chances here the p and throw off the RPO really nice job there by both guys the throw and the catch to work that defense and get the first down and that's just a great individual effort by the wide receiver he catches this ball way short of the sticks but because he's able to make the defender Miss now he's able to get the extra yards and turn that into an explosive play now on First and 10 from the 27 goes to the option he'll toss [Applause] it kept it on the ground last time let's see if they go back to it on second [Applause] down here comes the option he'll pitch it found a little space and he's got four to the 35 four punts already and they've got to convert here to avoid a [Applause] fif musling ahead on Third and short and the rebels brought to the ground but not before picking up the first well there we go we finally see some life in this offense running the football nice game to pick up the first down got to get more of that going moving forward because they have not run it well the rebels come to the line with a new set of downs from the gun they'll try the middle able to SC three yard out of that one somehow it's second and seven kept it on the ground on first down now back to the line running back searching for a hole and he'll find enough Running Room to get it just short of Midfield at the 49 trying to wear down this defense a seventh play of the drive it's third and one they'll try to pick it up on the ground they were all over him nowhere to go as that third down play turned into a disaster and there was no space nowhere to go that play went absolutely nowhere sometimes you just need dude to show up and make a play and he did sometimes you just need to block that dude and they didn't gets it away solid distance but more importantly trying to keep it away from that Return Man the Houston offense ready to go back to work here's another opportunity Jesse to stretch out this lead after punting last time I think it goes back to your Playmakers reys I think it's finding the guys that have been working for you earlier on in this game and getting them the football yeah and there's obviously to panic I mean think about it you got the lead you got the football you got to be smart with the football make your plays put a good drive together here sixy pickup on first down leaves him with second and four using his legs it's Jenkins slams ahead for a yard out to the 33 will they keep it on the ground again here on third down they'll try to run for it and they did not let him reach the line gain it'll bring up a decision here and that last carry puts him right at 100 yards for the game and he's just been so patient he's foll his blocks letting it all develop in front of it and then bursting through and they were only in the first half Houston sends the punt team onto the field they'll look to pin him deep he'll be content with the field position making the fair catch right around the 30 yd line un LV ready to go back to work on offense they've taken three hay makers right across the jaw down 21 nothing but David now the chance to answer and this defense has been suffocating and this is so hard when you don't have the answers early man and the defense H you mouth you got to find some plays quickly here to try to make this a football game this is an offense that has a lot of Pride they're not used to being in this position I think it's going to take one effort one individual great play to finally wake this team up and get them back some momentum pretty good job of running to get two there to the 32 they line up and it is a long way to the sticks from here third and long and he'll try to throw for it shoots it to the left complete downfield they've got it to the 49 yd line and they'll move the chains and listen the defense knew coming into this one they were going to Target him early and often he is a weapon and there's no mystery where the quarterback's going to be looking on critical down and distances let's see able to cover him throughout the rest of this game the option look he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three and they run the option and that had no chance I mean QB you can tell something was a little bit messed up and he starts to run it goes nowhere defense swarms him that is the play that we don't want to run again last play was a near disaster now dealing with second and 13 they go to the ground nice solid form tackle from this sophomore they line up with some serious work to do if they want to convert this one on Third and long he's going to have to turn one loose down field makes a connection and sure tackling there to keep him from getting to the first down marker well this tight end can run these Crossing patterns and he can catch the ball against man coverage or Zone coverage that time nice job seeing the ball in helping his QB out and the rebels will try to pin them back with the punt they're up to a half dozen kicks today how about this it's out of bounds inside the 10 and they're going to mark it right around the five yd line what a great job there they'll run it that hole closed quickly he'll get one out to the six didn't get much on first down second and nine motion from the offense receiver on the Move gets the touch pass he had all kinds of company as soon as he got and he had to fight his way back just to get to the line of scrimmage the first thing you have to do to make these plays successful offensively is I have to block The Edge I got to get my speeder in space they didn't do a good job of getting that guy out there in space where he could really use his Jets nice job by the defense understanding it seeing it rallying to it and tackling that guy for a loss gets it out fast he's there to make the stop but the damage has been done as they pick up the first down on the throwing catch that was a nice pick up running the drag route and finding that quiet soft spot in the zone yeah drag routes not only work against man coverage they work against zone two if you can find the soft spot the quarterback gets it to him early he can turn up field and you saw that right there the give on the inside they knock him down right there you can't let the same guy beat you over and over and over again you got to make adjustments sometimes you got to bring more guys in the Box more guys to the football and make sure he's not the one who beat you we've reached a two-minute warning and they will try to build on what has already been a dominant first half performance they got nothing on the last play second and 10 Smith wants to throw wide open down field excellent job working through the air there finding a hole in that defense and picking up a first down and this has got to be so demoralizing for this defense right now having given up multiple first downs on this drive somebody on defense has to step up make a play and stop the bleed the Cougars getting set on First and 10 he hurs one deep down the left side and he's got it inside the 30 yd line and they are pushing the ball down the field a big pick up on that one and the tackle is finally made [Applause] an explosive play takes him right outside the Red Zone and they've got it first and 10 he's looking to throw it it's caught there was tight coverage but a perfect throw and catch and they've got it at the nine first and goal they're running the curl route against Zone coverage the quarterback knows that's going to be a tight window he's got to rifle that ball into his wide receiver he does just that and as a result they pick up the first down this offense has been a juggernaut and they have a chance to pad their total just before halftime oh he drops the football he had him right down the gut of the field instead it'll be second down well it's a good route by the wide receiver he gets to the middle of the field I think he just took his eyes off the football defense rose up deep in its own end on that last play now a second and long coming he wants to throw it again working that left side now that completion will take it inside the four and the offense is threatening well he comes up with the reception but not a lot of room to run after that yeah and I like the QB doing this I mean I'm going to find ways to give him the football and see if he can make a miss and I'm going to bet most of the time that my guy is a little bit more athletic than that defensive guy def won this battle but I like trying to get this guy the ball in space quarterback extends the play here's a Timeout on the field tight game here late in the first half this is a good sign for this defense the rate they were going not touching the quarterback him already having two touchdown passes in the first half this was not going to be a fun football game to watch now they're turning the tide a little bit getting a little bit of pressure getting a sack and the kicker a three ball to finish off the drive and now the lead is even bigger so they get the field goal now about to kick it way and you get a stop here and you go to halftime feeling really good about things here he comes from inside his own five really disciplined job by the coverage unit to get down there and make the stop at the 19 guys the Running Rebels offense ready to go back to work they're going to throw it to start the drive they find themselves in a pretty deep hole here but maybe a chance to grab a little momentum and regroup at halftime yeah a big chance like this is this is an opportunity this is the biggest opportunity in front of them in the game right now you got to get some points on the board you got to create something positive Jesse there hasn't been a whole lot to be POS looking deep down the right side and the DB right with him to knock it away you see it in football all the time right I get a match up on the outside you want to try to play Man coverage I'm going to let my wide receiver try to go up and make a play a lot of times the wide receiver wins not this time back to work on second and 10 from the 41 after that last incompletion dropping back it's Fernandez he's not afraid to go deep he makes a catch in the end zone touchdown unv man nice job getting the passing game going th this is big man going to the half and listen I know you're trailing but building some momentum maybe this second half we can keep airing the football out cutting into this deficit and who knows what the heck will happen lining up for the Pat and after the extra point they're now down 24 to7 quick strike offense on that three playay scoring drive and the final 41 yards covered by that touch down strike the lead is 17 as they try to fight their way back in they'll need a stop on this possession about to kick it off here looking for an alley from inside his own 10 nice job executing all of the assignments as they put a stop to that return at the 22 from the gun running back gets to get may not be the most memorable play of the day but it's important as he gets them out to the 25 yd line first half in the books time now to join Kevin Connors in our halftime update thanks phas the end of a very entertaining first two quarters of football and we have to start this halftime breakdown by addressing the play of this Elite wide receiver this is clearly a young man who once he's finished playing on Saturdays he's going to be playing on Sundays the kid has different gears he has a knack for finding gaps in the defense and I can't remember a player with that kind of catch radius and with that let's send it back to the guys in the cage in Southeast Texas second half just about ready to start and Houston will kick it off on the move from inside is five able to find enough room to get it out across the 25 he's brought down at the 26 the UNLV offense ready to return to the field got the quick completion and he's a real Nowhere Man tackled in this no gain land nice job defense you always hear people talk about tackling the catch you saw it right there there was nowhere for that receiver to go once he had possession as a result no game the rebels racing to the line in the hurry up they'll run it from the gun he's knocked down in the back field he'll lose a couple and you can do a better job up front right there that run was D from the get go nowhere to go the back gets hit as soon as he gets the football hard to succeed as a running back when you get the ball and you get cloged and this offense just can't afford not to get the first down here already trailing big and the clock has not their friend looking deep he's got it down the left side big big gain on that one as he steps out of bounds with a first down that's a beautiful pass and catch I love the job the quarterback does manipulating the defense with his eyes he Froze that safety and that allowed his receiver more room to work his route and the rebels have it with a first and 10 [Applause] use the play fake now to throw finds a man on the right what a nice connection knock down immediately and they've got it at the 25 guys out of the back field now it's not just run the ball downhill anymore you got to be versatile I got to be able to trust you in the pass game and I got to be able to throw you the football and you can do that right there I know you're going to catch it and I can depend on it the rebels look to keep this drive humming looking for space it's Thomas we'll give him a couple on that one second and eight coming up and a lot of times you want those big plays you want those Splash plays but sometimes you're going to take some losses you're not going to run the football overly well but if you continue to run it you can at least create some balance you at least have the threat of it just going to abandon it and now it's just going to be a passing game out of the gun to give to the back able to make the stop after a gain of two to the 22 already well with him field goal range wonder how aggressive they'll be on Third and long from the 22 to the air it's Fernandez deep shot for the end zone and it slips through his fingers incomplete that would have been a huge game if he could have held on on that third down they took a shot in the end zone just couldn't connect QB and receiver not on the same page and now it's decision time if you're the head coach on four they'll try to put three on the board as the field goal unit comes on the holder will kneel down at the 29 making it a 39 yd attempt it's good easy call for the refs after that last field goal Drive they're set to kick it away from inside the 10 yd line he'll bring it back he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic that they get him on the ground at the 20 the Houston offense comes onto the field they'll run the RPO and throw it right and there is nothing doing on that one you got the completion and nothing else to show for it well give the defense credit on that one because they knew coming into this one that they were going to try to get this receiver the ball in a variety of ways they were ready for the screen there and they create a negative play not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 he'll pull it on the read got the first down and more makes the tackle at the 32 but they were backed up inside their 20 and they pick up 15 man that dude just hits the gas and just goes how nice is it as an offensive coordinator to have a quarterback that you can run just like a tailback and you got a tail back in the back field with him all the time and he can throw so many options but you just see the speed when he hits the gas and it is really nice from the gun the ground game not much he could do there does pick up two to the 34 after picking up a couple at second and eight they'll go right back to him and maybe he'll get back
