Carolina blue glad to have you with us Keenan stadium in Chapel thrill and home to the North Carolina Tar Heels today we're set for a clash between these two Rivals from the Mountain West as we'll see the winners of four straight the SMU Mustangs taking on the winners of three straight the Carolina Tar Heel for EA Sports college football I'm ree Davis joined here in the booth by David Pollock and Jesse Palmer and guys let's get this thing [Applause] started and the Mustangs will kick it away to start us off and he takes this from inside the five and the return man has no place to run no place to hide and a place to be [Applause] tackled here comes the offense on first down goes to the option now the pitch and that defense pushing him out of bounds after a short game [Applause] just had a solid pick up on first now let's see what they've got on second [Applause] down the RPO it's complete he breaks a tackle he's close to the first down but they're going to Mark him just a little short the tarel headed quickly to the line [Applause] they'll try to drive ahead on Third and short and I don't think he got there no they stopped him short he does not pick up the first down this is an offense that Prides themsel on being physical they love running the football that's their identity but the defense getting that stop on Third and short against the run that sets a very clear message that they've shown up to play they know it's coming and they're going to be here all day he gets a block can they catch it boy did he show it all on that return the speed the explosiveness and took a little momentum with him out of bounds [Applause] couldn't ask for better field position for this offense give to the running back oh it's out the D Scoops it up and everybody reverses field all kinds of room to the right the 20 touchdown Carill the defense takes matters into their own hands and that's just the guy you want to find that football the ball's loose who do you want to get it one of your little fast guys the defensive back picks it up and turns on the after burners takes it all the way back for the touchdown and he's got the extra point and it's seven nothing to start this one the scoop and score what a lift it can give to the defense not content to get the ball they wanted to do something with it and they did and it'll come out to the 25 no attempt at a [Applause] [Applause] return the SMU offense is headed back onto the field they'll ride the running back and leave it with him finds that crease and he's got four out to the 29 you know it's so important for offenses to want to keep third Downs manageable the way you do that is by having success like that running the football on first [Applause] down solid pick up of four on first down it's second and six to the air it's [Applause] Stone and that's going to fall to the ground incomplete that was a physical match up there third down coming this is a team right now playing with tons of confidence because of how much their defense is dominating just look what they did the last time they took the field and look what they're doing early in this game they've got dudes flying around making plays they are 29 defense can taste getting off the field it's third and long from the gun wants to pass scrambling away and he was drilled just as he released the pass it's incomplete safe to say this defense sets the tone for their football team they were the reason they won the last time out and they are putting the clamps down on their opponent early in this one he shanked it and the punt goes out of bounds we'll see where the officials spot it but they certainly gave him no opportunity for return the North Carolina offense returns to the field the last time we saw this offense we had to look quick it was a three and out Jesse they just had no rhythm in that last drive so someone's going to have to step up and make a play David and get this thing going yeah let's find some juice find your guy find those plays that you know you can run inside out forward backwards get some first downs get some positive momentum [Applause] went to the running game on first down now here they come again power football with the run one step WRA Two Step squeeze this junior knows how to get him on the ground and the running back didn't get much there nice job by the defense you can tell they're focused in on this running back on this Run game being physical getting knock backs liting his carries how bold will they be on third down after that last run dropping back it's Herold and the pressure gets to him down goes the quarterback when it's a playaction pass that quarterback he really has to sell the Fate he can't tell his offensive lineman's getting beat right away while he's selling the fake he had no shot and the Tar Heel send out the punt unit this will be the second time they've had to kick it [Applause] away and the punt hits at the eight and goes into the end for the touch back Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work last time David it was one two three kick the last drive that three and out sometimes that puts your defense in a bad spot and you got to get a drive together here so you don't wear the defense out I just think David too predictable that last stri they got to do something here to get this defense on their [Applause] heels they came out humming on this drive and now it's first down from the 36 leaves it with the back Powers through the defender at the 40 there he goes oh look out touchdown SMU and once he found daylight it was the door baby I love the execution on that play great blocking up front just to get the ball carrier an opportunity in the second level of the defense and then at that point it was make a guy Miss and use the speed that was a perfectly executed play we check in with Kevin Connors what's going on Kevin boys if it's happening in college football we've got eyes on it check this out Yukon has the lead right now husky hysteria has been palpable all week across the state but this game is hardly over there is time left on that clock they're up by a field goal over UAB we've got our eye on this one and everything else going on throughout the day guys oh and how about that I know Kevin and those guys will be keeping an eye on it for us North Carolina has it back in the Tar Hill so pleased to send the off back back out boy three and out last time David they'd like to be more productive this time around yeah in the last Drive nothing really clipp no rhythm down off the field really really quickly they need to put something together here yeah David bad execution on that last drive so they got to take a collective breath and start playing like a unit in this the tels will keep this drive going all right nothing flashy there he just did what it took to get the first down it's first and 10 from the [Applause] 31 looking to move it through the air and the pass it's picked off what a beautiful sight and not only are we big and strong and powerful and ath you can add just have unbelievable hands to the mix cuz we can catch a football too just like those little DBS create turnovers Force interceptions let's [Applause] go great spot to start this drive for the offense looking downfield it's Stone shoots it to the left and he intercepts it taking it the other way he's on the 40 he's at the 20 touchdown North Carolina how about that D coming up with a play like that the DB saw it he thought don't drop it don't drop it then thought get caught don't get caught and he didn't the pick six hey these guys can play offense too now look at this I showed you I can be a wide receiver coach might split him out at wide receiver next week after making that big play but defense great job making the interception and you're right doing something with it don't just slide down don't be content take that thing all the way back brother and the P gives him a 147 lead they'll kick it off and send that defense right back out there to try to score again after the pick six [Applause] they'll be able to get off one more play before quarters end here's the hand off and he's able to pick up a few yards as we reach the end of the first quarter [Applause] will start the quarter offense about to snap it on second down give to the running back defense closed down quickly after gain of three they'll mark it at the 32 and offenses want to continue to feature the Run they want balance even if it's not super successful you can take it little bit at a time just to keep that defense Hest after the last R would you just give it to him again on third down they'll try to get the first through the air caught over the middle it's more and they'll get it to the 39 yd line and they'll move the chains well look that wasn't a touchdown but that was a massive play for this offense they needed some momentum they needed to find a rhythm and what better way than converting on third down awesome job by the quarterback getting his prodction comes out throwing on first down they get him down after he makes the catch a nice job by the defense there tackling the catch and smothering the tight end they know this offense is going to try to find him in the passing game in a lot of different situations that time perfect coverage and nice job bringing the big guy down not easy to do [Applause] after the short completion it's now second [Applause] down they'll run it behind the big guys on the left they get him on the ground but not before he gets enough for the first down well I know this is an offensive line that has a ton of Pride and they want to come out each and every game and really impose their will on the dline they got just enough push there on that run play to pick up the first Stains have their offense in high [Applause] gear looking downfield it's Stone throws for the tight end oh what a grab by the defense no real chance on the return but they've got it at the 34 this is obviously not a great start for this quarterback here two interceptions already in this game he's got to do a much better job with his decision Mak the North Carolina offense returns to the field after that last pick David they really need to take care of the ball this time no doubt and Palmer I want to know what Spurrier said that you on the sideline after a pick do that again you'll be you got to go out you got to call your plays I hope coaching staff isn't going to be afraid to throw it this drive after trying the running game let's see if they do it again on second down they'll move the running back to try to force the defense to adjust really nice run there good solid pick up and they'll move the sticks for the first down well at first you don't succeed try try again right it's been really hard for this offense in this game to run the football but they finally break off a big run there that could be the play they need to really generate momentum and get this run game going now on first down from the 43 yd line9 [Applause] calls his own number a seven yd pickup it'll be second and three and the tarel in the hurry [Applause] up now on the option the pitch great move there he's run out of bounds but not before turning in a big pick up and moving the sticks for a first down the tels come to the line with a new set of downs the g discards a man he's finally brought down but that freshman found some Running Room no big secret what they're trying to do here they've kept it on the ground it's first and 10 a little pre- snap eye candy for the defense we've got a timeout here late in the first half and they'll try to get more points on the board before the break going to work on second down in the red zone is still some ground to cover to pick up that first down they'll try the run and he's sprinting he'll take it all the way touchdown UNC follow the blockers the offensive by will take you to the Hallelujah L and I tell you what most of the time ree it requires a little bit of skill to find that hole and you know Slither through a little crack that was not a crack that was wide open didn't take a lot of vision because the blocking was outstanding he'll try to tack on one more the kick is up and good and put one more on the lead and let's check in with Kevin Conor in the studio Kevin a bit of an under the radar game this week guys but take a everybody stayed in their lanes and they'll stop him at the 16 [Applause] the SMU offense is headed back onto the field getting late here in the first half they'll have a chance to make this a one possession game and the offensive play caller here has to really be dialed in it's important down two possessions dve that they're able to score some points you got to call your best stuff in this two-minute situation and and such a good opportunity to cut it into a one score game create that momentum get some good juices going for the second half because obviously you know you built yourself a little bit of a deficit you need some good things to happen and it needs to happen on this possession you want to give this guy a chance to get some yards after the catch but there was nothing there yeah give the defense credit you saw their speed rallying to the football in the perimeter offense gets set for second down back to pass it's Stone throws to the wide out he's got an open man and he was Off to the Races and he gets it to the 45 it's a first down they'll stop the clock to reset the chains offense Up Tempo from the gun the ground game really good surge for this offense they move the chains and he's got it at the 34 first down physicality wins football games being able to run the football and create balance and and right here just chews up another first down gives you another chance to maybe continue to run the football and I feel like this guy too is just an explosive play waiting to happen his vision his quickness and he's got a burst if you give this guy just AE he's going to hit it and right now he's doing some damage on this defense well you're seeing the balance this offense has and how they can create explosive plays in a variety of ways we just saw one come in the Run game and now you see one coming in the passing game I'll tell you they've got this defense on their heels this offense needs a little something to feel good about going to Half Time a chance to chip away here on first and goal a timeout is called as this offense tries to find way to get more points on the board before the [Applause] half and this is a really important series of plays a chance to cut into the lead just before halftime they'll dial up the run on first and goal he pushes it forward all the way to the 2yd line I tell you what they're down but they're not out with this guy they keep feeding him he keeps having success on the ground maybe I use this now to catapult use some play action make some bigger plays down the field but the Run game has not been the problem today running out of time here in the first half they're going to have to be efficient to put some points on the board before the break he's dropped behind the line of that'll be a l of three we've got a timeout in the waning seconds of the half maybe a chance to get off a couple more [Applause] plays and it's third down but they're going to go ahead and try the field goal and try to get points before the break and the kicker delivers the three to salvage that drive so they get the late field goal right before the half and not much time after this kickoff for an answer if you can do that I don't know why you don't do it every time reduce the risk bang it out of the back of the endel they'll put play at the 25 just enough time for one final play of the half looking to go up top on first down he off one deep down the left side oh it's pick he threw it right into the double coverage going the other way and he's got room and the defender is tackled and that's how we'll run out the first half we've played two quarters here time to go to Kevin Connor in our halftime update and the Tar Heels will kick it away to crank up the second half [Applause] on the move from inside is five he was hoping for something a little more Dynamic but they get him on the ground at the 20 [Applause] [Applause] the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work down two possessions to start this third quarter they'd love to build some early momentum you ain't lying because you only got so many possessions here in the second half so now you're down I got to maximize every single one put your best plays together start this drive off on a good note yeah it starts right here obviously you can't get it all back on this drive but you can create that momentum you can create something special and some energy but it's going to start with this offense here executing at a high level halfway there on first down it's second and five to the air it's Stone trying to get to him all kinds of room to throw that one in there still on his feet at the 45 and perhaps a touchdown saving tackle as they gets him down at the 37 well how about the setting that play up we've seen earlier in the game a couple shorter throws they're just trying to suck those safeties closer to the line of scrimmage anticipating that they would get an opportunity to take a shot they called the perfect play at the perfect time right there that last big play has them in position to threaten here first and 10 from the 37 he's looking to throw it finds the tight end at the 20 he's got space and he almost ran away from everybody on that one a huge pick up on that play and the quarterback knew exactly where he wanted to go the football had time spins the ball deep nice job by this offense understanding what the defense has giv him and creating the explosive play now the chance to pay off that big play from just outside the five here's the snap looking to throw and it'll be intercepted in the end zone and they'll drag him down after a good return on the interception really nice focus by this sophomore and he jumped on his chance to make a play and the offense came out aggressively here in the second half but they can't put the drive together and spit it up on the turnover I'll tell you this defense has a lot of athletes they've got a lot of guys with ball skills if you put the football anywhere around them in their vicinity and their ability to catch the football they'll come down with it this quarterback has got to be way more careful here in the second half North Carolina has it back in the Tar Hill so pleased to send the offense back out let's see if this drive goes better than the last one they were in and out quickly after the quick pick David yeah first play big mistake man now let's get this offense in a little bit of a rhythm maybe before you open it up again Palmer or do you trust him right away uh he seems to me like the guy maybe that just needs to kind of get into the flow of the game so maybe you get the running game going in here and just give him some easy looks to let him get led up picked up two yard on that last one they need eight on second [Applause] down they'll run it from the gun strong run and a pick up of five out to the 15 yeah and a great job by the offensive line seeing the blitz picking it up and then it's on the running back running back finds the hole gets a little bit of a crease makes a nice run out so third and short from inside the 20 you convert here and this drive takes on a different complexion on the move and there were some collisions in there and the D finally stops him short of the marker you know I really like this QB running the football because I know he's got a lot of speed but he's not the biggest guy in the not going to be able to break a lot of tackles you really got to do a good job of trying to scheme ways to get him out in more space the tarel will try to pin them back with the [Applause] punt a low line drive and short oh misjudges in a bit mu it and these pun returners want to make big plays but man oh man did he make a big mistake flipping the field position defense flying in on him and he did not secure the football in that play don't ask me bro I don't know what that was the Carolina returns to the FI here's opportunity Jesse to stretch out this lead after punting last time I think it goes back to your Playmakers reys I think it's finding the guys that have been working for you earlier on in this game and getting them the football yeah and there's obviously no need to panic I mean think about it you got the lead you got the football you got be with theot I know you throw the ball together I hit they made me pump that one the defense over after the snap no wonder that thing INE now on second down after the incompletion the run to the left at the 45 on his way oh look out there he goes and finally out of bounds after an explosive run by this ball carrier how about the explosive play by this offense man it's so nice to have guys who can hand the football and just watch him work watch him do the rest the speed making big plays breaking tackles man is it nice to have an offense with a playmaker like that [Applause] that big play really has them in business it's first and 10 from the 11 they'll run it bir his way ahead for about three it's down at the eight operating in the red zone here on second down touch pass on the Jet Sweep he is stopped behind the line of scrimmage they'll lose yards on that one and great recognition by the corner that touch pass after he throws at the quarterback it's a pass he can't throw it Forward again nice job understanding that flying up coming and making the big tackle in the open field the terrain gets that's rough this deep in the Red Zone third down they can pick up the first without [Applause] scoring wide receiver shows motion on third down going up top pulls it in in the end zone touchdown tarel they've got the lead in trying to put this one in a hammerlock here in week 10 and it's so underrated the the relationship a QB and a wide receiver the timing the ability to know where he's going to be and be accurate with the football that's what leads to nice touchdowns Jesse well the chemistry between these two guys has to be great when you're throwing into the end zone because coverage is going to be tight the throw might not be perfect but this is something these two guys have been repping in practice over and over and over and it's paying dividends now on game one and for a quick update let's go to Kevin Connors in the studio all right guys a little update on what else is happening in college football this weekend Georgia state is trailing right now but I'm not ready to say this team is out of it not after the way this group has rallied around that coach it really has been something to see they're trailing by 11 to Kentucky will'll Circle back if anything changes in this exciting college football matchup and how about that one Kevin will be keeping an eye on everything going on elsewhere theu defense is headed back onto the field boy they had that last Drive moving a little bit David but then the mistake just crushed yeah and those mistakes are going to happen you're going to throw the football you're going to throw interceptions but I think I stay aggressive with this offense I get back to what I did in the first part of that drive what made me successful I agree David just turn the page if you're a quarterback right on this drive you did a lot of good things there leading up to that pick forget about it move on play the next play after the big play to start now they are on the move at their own 45 right back to the well still on his feet at the 45 he's R out of bounds but a big play on that one and it'll be a first down you know you start day one of training camp running your base runs you need a few yards you run these plays you need a first down you run these plays you rep them over and over and over again not sexy they're not pretty but in the end they're effective get you that new set of downs when you need he was just a breath from taking that one all the way and he'll run that momentum right into the fourth quarter back at it to open the quarter with this first down play the give to the tail back dropped after a pick up of four down to the [Applause] 16 after the productive first down play it's second [Applause] six they'll go right back to the Run he's Dro behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three yeah this offense man it's been a struggle bus and they just they haven't clicked yet they haven't found what they're really really good at and I'll tell you this it's later in in the fourth quarter later in the game obviously they need to start airing this thing out we got to get back in this football game cuz I don't know if yall realize this but we're down by a lot thir down conversions are a huge stat and this one would be a doozy if they can pull it off what a nice job on the ground working his way ahead for seven yard and leaving them with fourth and short they're about two yard away and they say a quarterback's best friend is a good run game and a good running back I think he agrees over 150 yards on the day I don't even think I need a quarterback the way he's been running the football all game long down by multiple possessions they can't come up empty on this drive in the fourth quarter they'll go for it on fourth down finds his man and they convert and they wrap him up but not before he gets enough on the catch for the first down well there's the advantage of having versatility at the running back position on fourth down everybody in the stadium is expecting if you throw it going to a receiver at tight end but because of his ability to catch the football he makes a huge play for this offense and keeps the drive a lot turning to the running game on first and goal and he rolls into the house touchdown musts and the offense continues to run the football the second rushing touchdown from the running back the offensive line paven holes continue to feed this man the ball looking for the two-point try back to pass at Stone and he had it for a second but it just dribbled out of his [Applause] hands about to kick it off after punching it in for the touchdown he'll bring it back from inside is SP and the returner is stopped North Carolina has it back back in the tar Hills so pleased to send the offense back out a hand off keep working on that clock he's dropped behind the line of scrimmage that'll be a loss of three I I know exactly what I have to do here defensively we got to get the stop so we're playing run we're selling out to run because we're thinking they're going to run the football and we got three timeouts let's use them wisely let's use those timeouts save as much clock as we can so our offense has some time on the clock to do some damage they get the football back not what they had in mind to start this drive here comes second and 13 to the ground with the back gives him some room to operate as he rumbles ahead for six out to the 15 yd Line This is a big pressure moment for the offense too because they've got the lead but it's now third down on their own side of the field they would love nothing more than to be able to convert this stay on the field keep bleeding the clock but the defense I'd expect them to bring pressure here trying to force the ball out of the QB's hands quickly we reached a two-minute warning and this offense will be quite content just to drain the rest of the time away this third down play might be the last chance this defense to stay in the game free- snap Motion in the back field receiver on the Move gets the touch pass he's pass the 30 and they'll finally bring him down after he rips off a huge play I love this type of play because it looks like a Jet Sweep the defense they're a bit confused pre- snap they don't know who has the ball and all of a sudden that guy with his speed is in the second level of the defense before the def knows what happened and the Tar Heels will snap it on First and 10 they'll try the counter a run up the middle is stuck for No Gain quick timeout called by the defense stopping the clock to save as much time as possible for their offense got stuffed on first down it's second and 10 [Applause] trying to beat him to the corner on the right can't get him to the ground the toss does a really good job of getting the football on the edge quickly you know you toss it out there to the running back you better block the defensive end that's priority number one good job blocking the defensive end getting a nice positive game on the toss play we'll see if they go back to the run here on third down a designed Run for the quarterback picks up the first down still moving got a lot of Running Room touchdown North Carolina and once he found open space the band might as well start playing with that things comfortable here in the fourth as they are headed to a seven and one record that one might have put the finishing touches on this game this one is over game set match the defense had a chance to maybe kind of keep their team in it but the offense said take it to the locker room and no problem on the extra point as they push the lead to 19 here in the fourth so that scoring Drive took only six plays and they finish it off with an electri buying 45 yd run to the house he thought about bringing that out for a half second but he'll take a knee and they'll bring it to the 25 the Mustangs have the ball back and ready to go to work not a lot of Hope here down three possessions late no and I love this part as a pass rusher because I'm just pinning my ears back get to the quarterback I know it's a pass every single time Palmer I'm trying to pad my stats I'm sure you're just trying to stay upright well we're definitely just trying to stay alive at this point but you're also trying to build confidence too for your next opponent if you can find some completions late in the game even though it looks like you're going to lose it it's all about building on the good things you do this week so that you're out executing at a high Lev after the incompletion it's second and 10 from their own 25 looking to throw at Stone he wants a big play here late he's got it open Runway ahead and he'll take it in they couldn't get him on the ground touchdown SMU and a nice touchdown continuing to fight continuing to play this one it's pretty much over down multiple possessions this late in the football game it would take a miracle but nice job by this offense continuing to fight push the ball down the field make plays and he knocks the extra point through the uprights what a display of explosive capabilities on that drive 75 yd two plays and a touchdown they're definitely up against it time running out down two possessions they'll try the onside kick yeah and this is why you put your hands team on the field most of the time when you know it's coming and you put those guys that are great catchers of the football the first guys what do they do they go block they go blow somebody up the next guys catch the football secure it get your butt on the ground and most of the time when you do this the ball game is over running out the clock a mere formality between them and a victory as we have Victory formation coming and they're just about out of chances the defense can stop it one more time as a quarterback takes a knee winning those individual sixc battles every Play Time After Time After Time After Time and that leads to a victory here and I love when teams go out and play like it's sudden death like if they lose the game their entire season is over this game wasn't for the national championship but would you wouldn't
