[Music] and welcome into the ballpark happy to have you with us the show has an NL East matchup it's the Washington Nationals going up against the Atlanta Braves joined by my partner Chris Singleton I'm John chambi well singy when you consider the top hitters ballparks in the sport this has got to be one of them I'll say this pitchers have to stay with their game they can't look over their shoulder and think I have to be fine and perfect on every pitch continue to pitch to your strengths and you'll come out of here with a good outing all right we'll be back to get this one started after this coming up on the first pitch and on the mound in this one Max free but Chris he hasn't exactly been Stellar here on his home M well I'll say this every player wants to perform well at their home ballpark in front of their fans in front of the city and you know this guy no different he wants to be more effective here so you you look at the numbers they haven't been great at home I'm sure he wants to turn that around and we'll see if he's able to start that in this one next pitch is [Applause] [Music] outside in there for a strike at the top of the zone [Applause] out that's towards Center Parris has a beat on it and there's one down here's Dave Martinez line up for the Nationals they do a lot of things well in this offense zingy they control the strike zone they make pitures work hard for outs and as a result one of the better OBP teams in the league well what I love about it is it's an organizational philosophy whether you go to instructional League whether you go to spring training you see these players even batting practice when it doesn't matter they're practicing that type of approach Boo and when you have that filtering through the organization even when you call up a player they step right in and continue with the pattern that they have established at this level which ultimately leads to a lot of success oh really expanded the zone right there with that fast ball off the outside corner of the plate got him to chase it that's a tough one to lay off of because it starts close to you and just continues to run away from you in that batters box so it's a really nice pitch with two strikes Zips it across that ends the frame three up three down for Washington and now the Braves with their first chance to hit we scoreless you're watching Major League Baseball on the show back here at Atlanta and on the hill in this one Mitchell Parker and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him yeah and you don't want to be too quick to say that he can't pitch on the road sometimes you know it's just a matter of luck it's not having a field difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the playing field don't know what it is but I know this he's got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we'll see what he's able to do in this one falling behind two and one and singy as a team you need to make the most of the very few opportunities he's going to give you right absolutely and and you know if you don't get to guys like this a lot of times early once they really settle in it's going to be the later Innings that they hand that ball over to a reliever if they do at all keeps the back going with a foul ball two two now that one missed count is foul ball and it remains a full [Music] count on the ground to First and foul ball line drive base hit right field so he battled through a long it bat and earned himself a hit Whit marfield up to the [Applause] plate next offering pop foul off to the right out of play Parris aboard here at first with nobody out got him now one away that here Marcelo Zuna run around to go that's in for a strike throw to Second and great jump I think that still kind of sets the tone not just for this game but for the entire series first inning game one so that kind of tells me they're going to be aggressive on offense and try to force the issue whenever they can one out and a runner at second check on the runner and he's back in easily for whatever reasons this is a hitter that performs better in night games we'll see what he brings in this [Applause] one on the ground right side gathers and throws to first and that's an out here's the Atlanta Braves lineup and a key factor for this club in that leadoff spot Michael Harris and boo he's a fun at bat to watch I mean definitely a threat whenever he's got that bat in his hands but for me it's it's all about the mechanics they're so sound and when he gets his foot down on time and starts his swing so much consistency that bat stays in the zone for a long time and he squares up the baseball a lot here is Matt Olen drilled to right way back there and that is gone a gigantic blast his 22 Homer of the year the Braves score first it's two [Applause] nothing a good hitter gets pitch recognition early he saw exactly where that was going to be the challenge not get over anxious and come out of your swing he stayed on it and got all of it Bas is empty with two away now in for the Braves Shawn Murphy Oh What a stop to first and that's a great play for the out well that's catlike reflexes over there at the Hot Corner nice job of making that play and ending the inning back at truest Park and now Hebert Ruiz we talked so much about how starting pitchers prepare for their starts I talked with Max freed and one of the things he told me back in 19 he and Lucas gelo started using MLB the Show to go over scouting reports line drive base hit so a man on base to start the inning that the second and now it's Luis Garcia next pitch way upstairs Max said he's not sure who actually started it first but it was 2019 and he and Gio who were teammates together in high school in Los Angeles they had the idea to become more familiar with the opposing lineup using MLB to [Music] show here's a two- two and there's a ball Full [Applause] Count and the center Harris rolled over on this pitch a little bit but he got enough behind it to shoot it through for a knock and you'll take that anytime you can get him to find a hole so first and second with one man gone andrees chaparo digging in for the Nationals and that is cut on and missed now one and two one and two count [Applause] and another ball our umpire behind the plate Jerry Hillsdale High Praise for Jerry when we talk to people around the game yeah no doubt about it boo he's very straightforward very consistent back there so most of the time you're not even going to think about him that's a good thing that's a hit laurano hustles to get it in stop sign goes up at third and the beses are loaded love how he let that ball travel trusted his hands nice job of going the other way and now it's Joey Gallow all loaded up dangerous hitter at the plate two balls one strike [Applause] on a line and one hops Off the Wall should be extra bases one runs in he's in at second with a one out double well we're starting over to rbi's with that swing and this one is tied pitch was in and off the plate so hard to do anything with a pitch in that location but somehow he got the barrel to it and hit it well pretty amazing and here's the rookie center fielder two on one out swing and a ball hit out towards left center field he's got it Runner tagging from third the throw is offline and he's in to score three2 they take the lead well that's a quality at bat right there you know the situation you need something in in the air and deep enough and that's exactly what he did good pass to the baseball so the next lineup turns over up now for Washington Alex call and now the Lefty that's in there and the count is one and two really great change of speed he goes off the off speed to the fast ball and the hitter doesn't know what's coming next swings and misses struck him out three runs on four hits no errors and one left on now to the bottom of the second it's the Nationals three and the Braves two and welcome back to the ballpark bottom half of inning number two here's Jared kelman call a strike the [Applause] pitch and it skips into dirt in the air left field down the the line makes the grab on the run and there's one down Orlando here's Orlando Ario one down base is empty oh can't pick it up cleanly throw to first gets him good job to stay with it there for the second out Lor here's Ramone laurano two out space is empty they say he wi one ball two strikes [Applause] the W to kick the pitch got him looking and it's a three up three down inning Braves are set down one two three they're down three to2 on to the third inning here's CJ Abrams to hit CJ AB and he deals hit hard but foul off to the left some real good life going through the Zone on that one and a pitch up the middle marfield now a jump throw lead off man retired here in the third now the left fielder James Wood one down base is empty wouldn't chase that time lined into right no trouble here puts it away for the out two down now B the catch two outs Bas is empty and now it's kebert Ruiz two down nobody on good eye right there two1 [Applause] [Music] and a swing and a miss and that's that and the Nationals gone in order but they're up three to2 and we're back as we go to the last of the third here's gor shella the Lefty fires out to short Abrams throws the first in time one gone bottom of the third inning up next for Atlant the centerel Mel back to the leadoff spot in the Braves lineup Michael Harris next up for the Braves singy you got to appreciate a guy who's this good defensively I mean watching him track balls in the Outfield it is beautiful and he gets that fast ball by him upstairs he's so solid calms the heart rate of the pitcher and the manager when the ball goes up in the air you just now this one is hammered way back there on it way and gone and we are tied his seventh home run of the season and it ties it up it's 33 wow what a clutch swing right there and now anything can happen in this game with a low 90s fast you have to live on the edges and hit your spots if you don't you'll get hit hard really good swing there patient waited for it there's like BP all over [Music] again one out base is empty so now to the plate for Atlanta with marfield a little out front there as he swings through it there's one guy that I can think of about Boo who started as a third baseman Alex Gordon and then became an elite perennial gold Glover out in left field for the Kansas City Royals but he's a guy when you watch him play you would imagine that that's all he ever played in his life was the Outfield throw to first is in time and the batter now Marcelo Zuna singing you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offensively he is the ultimate professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepared ouch that one got him he had two strikes on him and he hit him Matt olon up to the plate not a surprise he's off to a good start in this one given he enjoys playing so much at home let's see if he can make it two for two though Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game two outs got him outside pitch got the better of him that time one hit in the inning a solo Homer three Innings complete all tied up at three a piece back here in Atlanta as we go to the top of the fourth and now up for Washington Luis [Music] Garcia the 1-1 is fouled [Applause] off one two now that's a ball well he's so great about hitting the ball the other way gets those arms extended so right there just trying to straighten him up a little bit so he doesn't have as much outside plate coverage and the pitch and so the Lefty allows the lead off free pass now a great back and forth and that it bad play off some really close pitches and somehow Bo he found a way to keep the bat on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now I couldn't have done it gcia gets his lead at first nobody out strike two with two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here pitches in the dirt two and two way to lay off that pitch [Music] down on the ground left side six four three and they turn the double play got what he was looking for on the mound right there and his infielders took care of business pretty textbook execution between short and second to turn that into two outs next for the Nationals is the DH andrees chaparo the one1 and another ball two and one all tied up top half of inning number four wouldn't chase that time comes up empty that's strike two count is [Applause] full ground ball up the middle that's a base hit so a two out Knock keeps the inning alive that's back to back singles for him once you get the ball by the pitcher there's a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground ball so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit here's Joey Gallow smoked on the ground a second marfield to First in time that's the third out so one hit is all they get on that to the bottom of the fourth all tied up at three a piece bottom of the inning and now the catcher comes up to him Shawn Murphy the pitch got him swinging not a big fast ball in the mound by today's standards just low 90s but when you can pitch backwards like that and sometimes save the fastball for later in the count it just sort of explodes on hitters and gets right by him that was the first fast ball they bat and clearly the timing just wasn't there for it Jared Kelner next up for the Braves next offering in there for a strike it's a ball in two strikes Bas is empty one away we're here in the bottom of the fourth swing and a miss struck him out he's really good hitting the baseball the other way so credit the pitcher for having him out in front of that pitch clearly he had him fooled orando Orlando Aria next up for the Braves just [Applause] missed 3-1 now Light Drive nice grab oh that one was headed for the Gap but a nice leaping catch he goes up perfect timing and that will end the inning back at truest part new inning getting started and now here's a speed threat outfielder number 30 two balls at a strike here it comes swing and a miss nice change [Applause] up highfly ball shallow right field puts it away for the out one away now the right back to the top of the lineup Alex call digging in for the Nationals one down base is empty and that's in dir next offering misses now three and one and there's ball four ball [Applause] four and now the short stop CJ Abrams call stands at first with one out that one fouled off [Applause] one and two here the short stop takes the [Music] ball for the last half of the inning now point for the Braves Ramone laurano the [Applause] one-1 line to Second snagged on the bounce sends it to First and lauriano is retired now bat third GI shella to the plate one out Bas is empty Go Go's go next offering is in for a strike well it was bumpy in the early going for the Lefty but he settled into a really nice Groove Fly ball down the line this has got a chance and it is foul and a [Applause] pitch and that one is lifted in the air sizes this one up he's got it out number two now batting ceri so the batting order turns over Michael Harris will hit next two down dolman on so a foul ball makes it one and two here comes a pitch swing and a miss struck him out and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three Braves go down quickly here score remains tied at three top six and now the switch in and catcher Hebert [Applause] Ruiz and here it comes fought off foul the wi of the pitch on its way to the corner laurano trying to get there no trouble here puts it away for the ey one up on down next to hit for the Nets Luis Garcia leftand hitter Waits still two and two after the foul ball gets a piece there we'll do it again all tied up and we're the top half of the six and a foul ball he stays alive [Applause] to third ell he made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat Brian Snicker out of the Dugout and he's going to make a change Max freed will give way and as he heads for The Dugout we'll take a quick break new arm on the mound when we get back so out of the pan comes the right-hander Spencer schwellenbach this guy's a strike thrower he's done an excellent job of avoiding walks so far this season and now Jose [Applause] tenna swing at a popup Ella gets under it he's got it and that is out number three offense held in check there two three four do up in the home half of the sixth all tied up at three a piece and we're back John shabby with Chris Singleton in the booth and leading off the bottom of the six Whit marfield [Applause] the pitch swing and a miss as he was out front the Nationals have some action going in the pen Jacob Barnes looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez hers getting cranked up as well the onew and a swing and a miss picks up strikeout number seven really love the pitch sequence right there I'm telling you what pitcher and catcher on the same page right [Music] now so here's the Braves designated hitter Marcelo Zuna pitch misses two and one two balls one strike [Applause] good eye in that [Applause] spot hit pretty well in the air out to Center makes the catch for the out now batt first B and now Matt olssen up to hit and a pitch swings and misses and that is strike two the Lefty closing in on 100 pitches and now it's even up it's a good take two outs and another ball got a full [Applause] count swings and misses on the fast ball up in the zone for the strike out down in order go the Braves so no change in the score it's 33 back here in Atlanta now it's the DH Andres chaparo andap and a 3-2 hammered down the line and now maybe extra bases now he'll turn for second the throw in but he's in there easily well patience and discipline paid off right there as he got into an advantage count that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay now a good opportunity to potentially Jump Ahead in this game here in the later Innings go ahead run on base Joey Gallow steps to the [Applause] plate man it's second that's a ball outside [Applause] hard ground ball for a base stop Runner around third on his way to the plate his confidence level is so high really nice job of coming through in a big spot couldn't get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit it and now the center [Applause] fielder next offering [Applause] upstairs Gallow on at first nobody out [Applause] off the plate inside and that's ball three he's getting a little frustrated out there on the mound getting hit around a little bit let's see if he can settle himself down right-handed reliever and that's ball four that's Ball Four take your Bas that one hurts right there as they couldn't take care of the bottom of the order to start this inning you turn the lineup over now this inning set up to be something big for this offense now it's the right fielder Alex call first and second no outs here in the top half of inning number seven swing and a ball popped up Ella under it brings it in got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick front shoulder open backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be two onone out CJ Abrams digging in for the Nationals the 1-1 right through there for a strike right the short stop takes the ball that's a really good take two two now Cs and misses that's a strike out well we've had a great plan of attack for him tonight I mean finding all the holes in his swing and his approach just frustrating for him up there you strike out a guy three times in a game I think that guy's got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach figure out how they're beating him make this adjustment really quick cuz word will get around the league in a hurry so first and second with two outs here's the left fielder James Wood sang in a [Applause] Miss right-hander kicks deals oh and he hit him he had him one two and he ends up hitting him with a pitch Hebert Ruiz the next to hit well both sides equally as strong so not a good time to try to turn him around with a relief pitcher and put him on the other side of the plate pass ball for a strike and the count one and two just off the Inside Edge man oh man I don't know how you take that pitch that's as close As It Gets he fouls it off will do it again kick andos line drive that's a face hit one runs in there comes the throw but it's offline he will score a perfect example right there that plate discipline it pays off the deeper he gets into a cow the more comfortable he becomes and he usually wins the battle Dylan Lee into the game and this could be a pretty critical point in this game they're hoping he's the guy to keep him within Striking Distance [Music] first and second two outs here's the second baseman Luis Garcia two on two outs and now the count one and two after the swing and the miss [Applause] and another ball tapped back up the middle Aria takes it to the base for the force out that ends the inning and stops things from getting out of hand so they get three and jump ahead late Midway in inning number seven and it's time to stretch it's the national six and the Braves three we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Jacob Barnes it doesn't get a lot of strikeout compared to other relievers so he relies on getting that soft contact and the defense doing work behind him they'll have to be in their toes with him on the bomb so here's Murphy now the Braves in Striking Distance but have some work to do boo it starts with the leadoff man need a good and bat out of him right here this one popped up Gallow in position makes the catch and there's one down now batting Le field Jared K so up next Jared Kelner the Braves trailing by three here the bottom of the seven outside corner there's a strike count [Applause] outside and that is ball four it's tough after falling behind a hitter two balls and no strikes but now at least he gets a fresh start against a new batter but he needs to get back into the strike zone and start pitching with [Applause] conviction right side no trouble here puts it away for the out and there are two outs [Music] lauriano comes up the [Music] [Applause] hit two outs that's outside and the counts full Gio Ella to bat next righty delivers foul we'll see another payoff pitch and the righty Diaz Line Drive face hit kman around second headed for third and now they'll have Runners on the corners with two away the third B number 13 the left-hander on now DJ herds this sth ball has been really good against left-handed hitters so two on with two away and next for Atlanta Gio [Applause] orella Lefty out of the stretch Runners at first and third and a swing in the in that's the inning two left for Atlanta and they're still doubled up it's 6 to three back at truest part leading off Jose tenna you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is I want to stay Square to the plate try to hit the ball over the short Stop's head big swing in a Miss activity in the bullpen here's Johnson getting ready to come in for manager Brian Snicker bummer warming up as well the pitch and the slider just misses well on paper it's favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he's set to face batting from the left side same side he is empty line drive to short and CAU ratted bat is a positive sign even though it probably doesn't feel like it he hit the ball hard but it doesn't always work out in your favor sometimes a Defender is there to make a play Joey Gallow digs in now two down nobody on and we're in the top of the eight got the back going too soon and strike two and down on strikes Nats go down one two three Nationals go quietly but they still lead at [Applause] 63 out to the bottom of the eighth here's the center fielder Michael Harris [Applause] High Fly ball right field settles underneath it caral it one down the B number 15 second Bas so now to the plate for Atlanta Whit marfield B is empty one away here the bottom half of the eighth inning and another Ball action in the pen down there finan looks to be getting ready for Dave Martinez the count two and [Applause] one struck him out looking well he's going to have some thinking to do when he leaves the ballpark after this one that was his third strike out now on the M for the Nationals number 53 he's into the game but the base is empty number 53 Joe L two outs bace is empty now in for the Braves marelo Zuna kicks and fires on the ground right side slides but he can't come up with it and with the inning still alive here comes the heart of the order here's Matt [Applause] Olen two outs that's inside at the belt and fires swing and a miss and now two and two two balls two [Applause] strikes and now the Lefty got him looking for the K Brave strand one and can't cut into that 6-3 deficit we're back it's the top of the night and there's a new pitcher on the M Pierce Johnson pretty tight game so they're looking for Quality pitches out of them right here got to do his best to keep the score right where it is and now the center fielder you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at at the top of the list the pitch swing in a miss and that's strike two yeah we go beyond just the you know Fielding percentage and you know what it looks like but the ability to have a range and you know close holes that you know are normally there against an average Defender but this guy is special and you can see it in his first step quickness in the air left field Kelly makes the grab one away now bat right Alex stepping in Alex [Applause] call you could see was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on the fast ball and now it's one and two stays [Applause] alive and they'll do it again swings through that and it's a strike out that's the second out good pitch right there I mean he's attacking a location that this guy at the play tends to have trouble with and there's just so much information in this day and age sometimes too much information but the guys that can take that information process it and then go out there Boo and execute the pitch go right after that hitter and get the result that they were anticipating that's really good pitching right there and it's a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together Johnson finds fights that one away still one and two two down dolman on swing in a Miss struck him out and he's gone for the fourth time tonight so they go quietly there five six and seven will leave things off in the bottom of the night it's the national six and the Braves three we're back and on the mound is the closer Kyle finnean and I can't imag any save is an easy one you're holding a small lead on the scoreboard and you know those hitters are going to give you the best at bats they can so it's always high stress let's see what he's got here to try and close it out here's sea Murphy the [Applause] caty next pitch is outside swing and a miss and that's strike two got it by him for the [Applause] K well that right there is what you want to see out of your closer come in and close the door cancel any hope that that opponent has in and making some type of comeback in the ball game tell you what that helps him settle in and that helps everybody else relax a little bit to get these other two outs one down base is empty in there at the knees that strike two two spoils the two strike pitch and he'll see another bouns it off still one and two well he gave up on that pitch early and it ended up staying in the zone I'm sure he's kicking himself and would like that pitch again righty to the plate foul ball still a one and two count the Braves trailing by three we're in the last half of the ninth inning [Applause] high in the air out to [Applause] right makes the grab and there's two gone the batter number 11 Short Stop Orlando the Braves down to their last out now a chance for Orlando Aria two outs so a foul ball makes it one and two [Applause] this could end it not even close there and the Count's even a [Applause] two and that one missing low that turns out to be a really good take right there but you don't want to end this game with the bat on your shoulder the Nets trying to close out a three-run lead here the last half of inning number nine lifted to left and that should do it that's the ball game sometimes road trips can be tough you're away from your family but when you can win silence that opposing crowd it makes things just a little bit better makes the road trip just a little bit shorter 63 our final score for Chris Singleton and our entire crew I'm John Shi
