and welcome in everybody glad you're with us the show has an NL East matchup it's the Washington Nationals going up against the Atlanta Braves first pitch coming your way next all right just about set to go and starting in this one Max free and singy we were talking earlier about how he's doing a great job navigating through tough spots I've just been so impressed with when it seems like there's more pressure he's more calm and settles in he's done an incredible job with runners in scoring position most guys they get a little tight they start to aim the baseball but for some reason he gets looser the ball comes out of his hand with more life and he's able to wiggle hook of you know tough situations and get his team back in the Dugout right through there for a [Applause] strike swings through that one for strike two he can live up in the zone all game if hitters will chase it that's just too much velocity look down in the zone and misses it's a strike out he came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time little anxious here's CJ ABS to [Applause] hit that's in for a strike [Applause] the Lefty fires ripped to short throw on to olon quick start here the evening two out top of the first let's take a look at our lineup this is a good offense Chris you're going to get quality at bats and balls put in play consistently with this group and it doesn't really matter who they're facing on the mound they have the ability to go out and compete and win ball games um if it's an All-Star or sa Young Award winner to just a rookie up in the big league so when you have that you have a chance to win every night if I was a pitcher on this team I'd feel pretty good about taking them M for him James Wood in the Box here lets that one go for a ball [Applause] just missed and that one fouled off two down nobody on [Applause] [Applause] foul ball another two- two upcoming two out space is [Applause] empty got him [Applause] swinging and the Nationals gone in in order and now the Braves with their first chance to hit were scoreless you're watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back at truest part and on the mound in this one Mitchell Parker and Chris pitching on the road has not been particularly kind to him yeah and you don't want to be too quick to say that he can't pitch on the road sometimes you know it's just a matter of lock it's not having a fi difference between the bullpen mound to the mound out there on the play field don't know what it is but I know this he's got good enough stuff to overcome and get it done on the road as well as at home so we'll see what he's able to do in this one headed towards the corner tracks it down for the out one down here's the Atlanta Braves lineup singing the numbers tell us this is an offense designed to it they're not going to force a ton of action on the bases and so obviously that is one of the focal points that we'll look at and you look at the quality of the at bats because of the fact that the legs aren't a part of this game they have to be very selective look for long pitch counts grinding out at bats and really barrels to the baseball because it's a lot easier to jog around the bases than for these players to Sprint strike two no balls two strikes missed inside with the curb one down base is empty fights that one away still one and [Applause] two and a foul ball stays alive one out base is empty Garcia makes the grab two [Applause] down batt thir the designated hitter marel two out space is empty here's Marcelo Zuna what a season it's been for him he has supplied a lot of power and that average that one's in there that's strike one back door him with the breaking ball just got the corner there's nothing you can really do with that a rope into right and that's a base hit couldn't have timed it up any better than that pitch was away and he did exactly what you're supposed to do with it drive it the other works in a slider next off bring is in for a strike looks like he's just sizing him up there really good pitch to hit but he took it all the way sometimes guys just want to set their timing later on in the game that may be a Pitch that he turns on and misses it's a strike down well that's always the key to effective pitching is getting ahead in the count and as aitch you to start expanding the Z HS become defensive and all of a sudden that plate starts to get really wide what happens is because of the pressure you end up committing to a pitch as a batter before you recognize what it is and Jerry when we talk to people around the game yeah no doubt about it boo he's very straightforward very consistent back there so most of the time you're not even going to think about him that's a good thing just missed how much were you aware of the Umpire Scouting Report or even who was going to be umpiring not a whole lot lot I mean there were a couple of umpires that weren't real good but outside of that you just kind of went into the game especially back when I was playing right through there got him and there's two down oh he's really dialed in and this offense is going to have to do something to try to break that Rhythm maybe it's square around the B step out of the box agitate him a little bit do something that just changes what's happening right now because at this pace it's going to be a long game so you got to figure it out quickly Jose tenna stands in now and watches strike one second inning here no [Applause] score just off the Inside Edge up and in and it's two and one in the air to left Center Harris after it no trouble here puts it away for the out and that'll do it three up three down for him there we go to the bottom of inning number two we're tied nothing nothing bottom of the second so now to the plate for at ATA Shawn Murphy sha Murphy the wine of the pitch that catches the zone for a strike it's own one right through there for a strike well we call that keyho holding even though it's right there looks pretty good if he doesn't love it he's not going to swing that early in the count gets a piece and it stays on and two little early on that fast I'm sure the pitcher taking a note look for an off speed pitch on this next one and one and two battling here as you fouls it away and he deals and that one in the air center field in to his right pulls it in for the out and there's one down batting no left here's Jared [Music] K pitch misses one and0 [Applause] breing ball in there for a [Applause] strike and here it comes swing and a ball lifted in the air shallow left field and that'll get down for a hit so they get a man aboard with a one out [Applause] single that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those got to make them pay Aria run around at first with one gone and next for Atlanta Orlando [Music] Aria B one no strikes the short stop takes the ball two [Applause] and0 that CS the zone now two balls in a [Applause] strike kicks and fires good eye in that spot [Applause] in the air out towards Right Center sizes this one up he's got it two away B the right Lor lorano comes up the hit [Applause] run around to goal pitch misses safe and second and he easily steals the bag you know what I like the aggressiveness right there looks like it's going to be tough to score in this one really good pitching so far so why not try to put some pressure on him and see if he can steal the bag get in scoring position two outs and one in scoring position next pitch is downstairs that one ripped left field and one hops Off the Wall should be extra basis R scores easily and it's one nothing always feels good when you come through and get your team on the board first just a solid swing right there caught it out front and Atlanta on to the third inning and now andrees chaparo Chapo we talk so much about how starting pitchers prepare for their starts I talked with Max breed and one of the things he told back in 19 he and Lucas gelo started using MLB the Show to go over scouting reports that catches the top part of the zone and a c is 0 and two Max said he's not sure who actually started it first but it was 2019 and he and Gio who were teammates together in high school in l oh this one high and deep way back there drops in for a hit couldn't run it now fires the second too late into second with a double and that was hard hit everything came together for him a lot of times in today's game right fielders are able to get to a ball that stays in like that but he hit that one pretty well and if he hits it just a little bit different on the barrel it's out of here easily but there's nothing wrong with the extra bases right there and now it's Joey Gallow just missed one tying run and scoring position we're here in the top half of inning number three that's in [Applause] there that miss is the outside edge it's a good [Music] take the swing and a miss not what you're looking for after the lead off double a strike out and there's one away and here's the rookie center fielder good Defender he's been inconsistent offensively puts it in the air out towards left Center snags it on the run and there's two away now Al Alex call digging in for the Nationals went down on strikes his first time through out towards left Center Harris has a beat on it and he makes the catch and that'll do it so they work around the lead off double we move on to the bottom of inning number three it's the Braves W and the Nationals nothing as we go to the last of the third now the leadoff spot for the Braves Michael Harris he's someone that you might not describe as having Elite level speed but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game in the first pitch misses for ball one Bo this guy's definitely a plus Runner but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time never takes a break guys like that even though they don't have the Elite Speed the fact that they're consistent with it they make moves on the base paths next offering is in for a strike [Applause] the wi to kick the pitch and that one is inside [Applause] down towards first Gallow takes it to the bag lead off man retired here in the third the batter number 15 second B with Barfield up to the [Applause] plate yeah that's a little high the Lefty ready and a 1-1 there here swing a Miss just thre that fast by him elev and if you're not looking up in that location very difficult to catch up to especially with that [Applause] velocity that just misses and it's three and two he should get a pretty good pitch to hit here with the three- hole hitter coming up if he's walk knocks that one away and we'll do it again the wind of the pitch fights it off he'll see another good battle here about to be the eighth pitch of the atat in the air out towards left Center sizing this one up pulls it down and he makes the catch two down now two outs face is empty now in for the Braves Marcel Zuna and he's already singled in this game this to third the throw to first what a play inning over Braves are set down one two three but they hold a one- nothing lead and we're back out of the fourth and the batter will be the short stop CJ Abrams as the Lefty gets to work just [Applause] missed up the middle and he knocks it down not in time and he reaches [Applause] [Music] safely up now for Washington James Wood 0 for one he struck out swinging last time swing and a miss well here's a good in this to get on the score after that lead off hit and order coming up right behind them this is where they need to get [Applause] going the pitch bounce to the left side down the line and it's foul the two strikes may see some movement over there at first base trying to stay out of the double play right here C him looking for the K well that's not the best two- strike fastball I've seen but certainly got away with the loation there know sometimes as a hit when you're down in the count you're so focused on a pitcher pain in the and you just get a little bit locked up on something down the heart of the plate not expecting it and it just kind of freezes you and now it's kebert Ruiz he struck out swinging at his first it [Applause] backat a leads off first with one [Applause] away fought off [Applause] foul the pitch got picks up strike out number seven just absolutely rolling on the mound he's looking very much on his game in the early parts of this one boo fully on the attack with these hitters that's seven strikeouts already so he's got a good Pace going no doubt and now it's Luis Garcia struck out looking his first time one ball no and a pitch out but nothing going on [Applause] next offering in there for a strike and now it's even one and [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] one now he breaks his back to First and that is the inning can't do anything with the leadoff single there to the bottom of inning number four now it's the Braves W and the Nationals [Applause] nothing back at truest part John CH and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the fourth Matt Olen [Applause] and a pitch and a foul ball you know these Braves doing a great job boo of just waiting for the right pitch to come their way and I'm seeing very patient bats out of he's only given up one run but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense fights that one away and the count remains o and two sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today in the air left field on the move and there's one down now Pat so here's Murphy now 0 for one with a fly out to Center Line Drive he's got it there's two away the number [Applause] 2 two out space is empty so now to the plate for Atlanta Jared kelman singled and scored his first time left field under it he's got it and that'll end the inning back here in Atlanta all set for the start of the inning now the third basem Jose tenna ten free back to work top of the zone for a called strike you know these Nationals just aren't putting great swings on the baseball in this just one extra base hit for him so they haven't exactly been hitting the ball Gap to Gap or out of the park that makes it really difficult to generate runs and the pitch base stock center field Soo Runner aboard to start the inning I'd say a mistake pitch in an 02 count too good of a pitch to hit right there you have to expand the Zone keep that lead off man off first base andr chaparo digging in for the Nationals doubled in his first a now one missed one [Applause] and0 the Lefty the one wouldn't chase that time looks like he's being a little cautious with him in this at thatat after doubling the first time up doesn't want to make another [Applause] mistake kicks Andals on the ground to First could be two there's one plenty of time and first that's the double play for me that's one of the toughest double plays to turn on the infield the first basem has to get inside create a throwing Lane to hit that middle infielder to start the double play and then from there completing it back to First really good job all the way around Joey Gallow steps to the plate his first at bat was a strike out and that's off the Inside Edge ball one [Applause] two down nobody on swaging a bouncer the flip that's the third out we old and he's a native of columia next offering in there for a strike and it's 0 and two two outs keeps the back going with a foul ball here's the 02 and that one a little bit High pretty standard High 02 fastball right there if you're smart look for something down in the zone but not too far don't want to chase that breaking ball in the dirt and the pitch bals it off still one and two the pitch stays [Applause] alive struck him out looking Braves go down quickly here but they lead it one to nothing and welcome back to the ballark and now here's a speed threat outfielder number 30 the Lefty fires this one high in the air to left Center makes the grab one away now and now Alex [Music] call first pitch just [Music] misses and a good eye there the Braves leading by a run and we're the top half of the six misses with the 2 and he's fired three straight outside the strike zone and there's the automatic it really looks like these HS have been in between with their timing today good fast excellent slider but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there got a full [Applause] count fouled off again and it remains three and [Applause] two one down base is empty foul we'll see another payoff pitch and now the Lefty swing and a drive deep right field Lano ranging back pulls it in on the warning track so digging in CJ ABS one for two there's a strike o and one [Music] and it's even [Applause] up leftand hitter Waits so a foul ball makes it one and two and another ball [Applause] [Applause] and a swing to this and that's that make it six shutout innings for him out there now it's the Braves one and the Nationals nothing well we go bottom six now the leadoff spot for the Braves Michael Harris we talk about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most breaking ball inside now two and0 well he gets the balls that get by most people at that position just really impressive because there's certain times the ball comes off the bat automatically that team that hit it thinks that they've got a base hit or they may have extra bases and he just takes it away second and next for Atlanta Whit [Applause] merfield and first offering is fouled off right through there for a strike pitch misses now one and two Andie deals pitch in the dirt and that's ball two good job to fight that one off and a pitch spoils that one and it remains two and two well he's having a tough time getting a pitch by him as a hitter you feel pretty confident that you're seeing different pitches still able to make some type of contact ninth pitch of the abat do next still two and two after the foul ball headed down the line and that drops foul well you can't really adjust your game plan for that last pitch guy hasn't thrown it very much you got to focus on the stuff that he's throwing up there most of the time [Applause] foul ball another two- two upcoming just off the outside edge really good take especially with two strikes and they'll do it again three and two payoff pitch and that one off the Inside Edge you walked him that's a great atat he saw a lot of pitches and earned a w when you go that deep into a bat The Hitter usually comes out on top one down so here's the Braves designated hitter Marcelo Zuna singing you can't ask for anything more this guy checks all the boxes offensively he is the ultimate professional and it doesn't just start at game time it starts in the afternoon the way he prepares and gets ready for the ball game I tell you what his teammates feed off of the leadership that he shows on and off the field activity in the bullpen for the Nationals Jacob barns preparing to come on if needed hers a left-hander also throwing and here it comes now this one's crushed down the line looking foul ball spoils the two strike pitch and he'll see another marfield at first one gone step off throw to first marfield gets back easily pitch misses there going to count one and two2 count you got the opportunity to expand the Zone good get the chase there let's see what he comes back with next the pitch and down on strikes and now to G oh just a beautiful fast on the inside corner for that backwards k right there I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle so I got to think he was looking away and just got locked up by the hard Stu boring in on his hands here's Matt [Applause] Olen marfield on the move pitch in for a strike throw a sa ands like this when it seems harder to score I like the call to put him in motion and try to steal the base Ball's not carrying no home run so far so trying to manufacture some offense like this may be the way to go runner at second two down intentional walk here with two out they set up a force at any base to end the inning well it doesn't get much easier with this next batter but totally understand going with the intentional walk in that spot he's just too dangerous at the play right now and there's a base open so it gives you options defensively to get it out Murphy in the box now no balls in a strike Bo that hooks looking pretty sharp today just a solid pitching performance so far and I really think it's because of that c [Applause] threw that one out in front that time and he's close as he's trying to get through six full Innings right now he's about to throw his 100th pitch I'd be surprised if this isn't it for him 0 and two now battling here as he fouls it away and'll J Abrams that's the third out inning over so they get the out after a long battle at the plate those plays can be tricky they routine but that doesn't mean it's always going to be smooth he delivered a good play right there Hebert Ruiz digging in for the Nationals who's 0 for two in a pair of strikeouts that finds the zone and it's O and [Applause] one and ball one it's been a very impressive outing so far his command has been a big part of it even when he misses he misses outside the strike zone which is exactly what a pitcher wants trying to hold one-run lead here the top half of inning number seven got him looking that's out number two well they've had a great plan of attack for him tonight I mean finding all the PS in his swing and his approach just frustrating for up there you strike out a guy three times in a game I think that guy's got to go back and really study some video with his hitting coach figure out how they're beating him make this adjustment really quick cuz word will get around the league in a hurry [Applause] and the first pitch misses for ball one one wouldn't chase that time there's a strike and a count two and one the [Applause] pitch way high with that one and the count is three and one he hasn't fallen behind in the count like this all day he's in danger of walking his first batter right here and he walked him it feels to me like his time on the mound is running short starting to show some signs of fatigue so we'll see how much longer they let him go two outs runner at first now the third baseman Jose tenna swing and a try this one is crushed no doubt about it and here in the late stages they had the lead his first Homer of the year and they add a pair it's 2-1 well that swing changes things yes it does they were in Striking Distance they found a way to fight back big time anytime you have a pitch down the middle of the plate the percentages go up for the hitter to do damage even if it's a pretty good Sinker like that one nice piece of hitting there at the pl two outs nobody on andrees chaparo digging in for the Nationals fast ball for a [Applause] strike two down nobody on hard hit left side throws across the diamond and that is the inning Nats pick up a pair in the Inning on this two-run Homer and it's now a 2-1 ball game Major League Baseball is on the show we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Jacob Barnes and and as relievers go he's not a big strikeout guy tries to force weak contact so command and execution are huge for him well one run game Jared ker now at the [Applause] play and a pitch on the ground out to sh Abrams tosses the first and they get the lead off hitter in the seven you want to be a great defense you have to deliver consistently it doesn't matter how many highlight re plays you make if you can't execute the small stuff just like we saw Orlando Aria next up for the [Applause] Braves and fouled [Applause] off in the air left down the line two [Applause] down the right number 18 here's Ramone [Music] laurano that's a strike across the top of the Zone holding on to a one-run lead here the bottom of the seven ripped on the line he gets there to make the play a nice running grab and the inning is over and the Braves go down quietly and they Trail it here two to one welcome back in a new arm of the mound to start the eight Pierce Johnson and one thing on him he's been really good this season it keeping the ball in the par not an easy guy to take deep here's Joey Gallow Washington the first Joey Gallow and he deals swinging a miss one one Johnson 62 righty 200 lb and they went out and made a trade for him last season the one is outside and it's a ball on a [Music] strike righty delivers went too far that time it's one and two one ball two strike Johnson fires and another ball that one almost got [Applause] him 32 on the way swings through that one it's a strike out you're usually are going to see that inside fast a little longer coming in from the opposite side but that pitch really got in on him right there that's a well thrown pitch tough to do anything with that in terms of getting the hands through and The Sweet Spot of the bat to the baseball number 30 add with one down takes a strike double barreled action in the bullpen Aaron bummer southp is throwing and getting that Sinker dialed in Lee getting loose as well that hits the dirt and one and one b is empty one away and we're in the top of the [Applause] eighth late on that fast it might be time to choke up a little bit get that front foot down early maybe even just spread out he's really late right now and that's downstairs and outside swings through it and that's a strike out very strong coming out of the pin so far as he punches out the first two batters he's faced and this will get straight to work man it's talked about a lot but relievers are just so electric these days these aren't fun at bats if you're a hitter I'm so glad I'm retired call the next to hit takes ball one [Applause] the at back coming [Applause] up that one down the line and that's just foul to kick the 3-2 popped up foul territory behind the plate Murphy pulls it down and that is that so they go quietly there last half of the eighth coming up it's the Nationals two and the Braves one back now new pitcher on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eighth number 53 this is his third time out this year number 53 [Music] gior shella steps in corner infielders guarding the lines trying to prevent extra bases the wi of the pitch outside low and that's ball one the Nationals have some action going in the pen Kyle finan looks to be getting ready for Dave [Applause] Martinez kick Andi that one in the dirt and now two and0 right through there for a [Applause] strike here's a two- one and there's a base hit and that puts the tying run on base well that was one of those high percentage Advantage counts where batting averages are just so much showed a willingness to drive that pitch the opposite way didn't get jumpy didn't try to pull the ball he let it get deep took the barrel right to it and then extended through the swing for the line drive base hit looks like we've got a substitution at first coming in as the pitch Runner Luke Williams l so the batting order turns over Michael Harris the next to hit 0 for three with two fly outs and a ground out rolled softly but that goes [Applause] foul with the goahead run at the plate here the bottom half of the eighth Inning on the ground left side six four three but it's not in time and they just get one that's a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game it might not be the most challenging we've seen but it needed to be made that's helping your team marfield in the box now take strike one good there you want to get something just a little higher that you can Elevate stay on that double play and the pitch runner on the goal pitch in the dirt and that's a stolen he's not even close well it seems like 90 ft is such a big deal in a tight one-run game like this one maybe it's a little bit risky but they felt good about it and it paid off let's see if they can turn this into a big run one out and a runner at [Applause] second well if he's going to do something special right here it's going to have to happen with two strikes so the tying run at second on the ground Garcia throws the first in time that play won't be trending on social media later on but it's still important to execute it to Perfection this game is a lot harder than it looks partner now in for the Braves Marcelo Zuna one for three if you don't get ahead in the count you can forget about having any success against him [Applause] first pitch misses the tying run is 90 ft [Applause] away so two balls and no strikes B strike a sinker at the bottom of the Zone in the dirt down three and one Matt Olson to bat [Applause] next and a 3-1 on the way that one hit to right call under it and makes the play and that's out number three well this guy competes hard we see the emotion there I love it great job of getting out of the jam so coming into the game now on defense Luke Williams he's the new third Bas new arm out of the bullpen Dylan Lee oh he's been a really tough guy to take deep this season you usually have to string some hits together in order to get to [Applause] him now it's the short stop CJ Abrams the you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher and what you tell yourself is I want to stay Square to the plate try to hit the ball over the short Stop's head not close with that one and that's ball one right through there for his [Applause] strike on the ground right side Dives and he can't hang on he decides to eat it and the defense comes away with nothing [Applause] so man about I'm not sure whether clutch actually exists but you look at the numbers and this guy always seems to deliver in those spots well I think it's the ability to assess the situation understanding what the pitcher has what he's trying to get people out on and then being able to use the entire field Aria throws the first and there are two [Applause] outs the third and now up for Washington Jose tenna he delivered it a big way back of the seventh singy absolutely a two-run shot that really looms pretty large in this game right now [Applause] and immediately pumps in a strike to the left-handed [Applause] hitter swing in a miss and it's another two started in and ended up on the outside edge just changing planes and very difficult especially for a left-handed hitter to track and that it's handle gets it to First and that is that look for the Nationals on this RBI double it's now a 3-1 ball game you're dialed into the show back now as they hand the ball to a fresh arm to start the bottom of the nth Kyle fin again and compared to a lot of other relievers strikeouts have not been a big weapon for him this year so the defense should be active Matt olon up to the for the the
