that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems that they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we'll see how right-handers do against him in this one all right ready to go here here's the Royals designated hitter Michael Massie next offering is in for a strike well he had a pretty good look at that pitch and not sure exactly what tied him up there couldn't pull the trigger and perhaps the best pitch he'll see in this at bat to hit and another ball spins through that and it's a strike out and one away well that high foring fast it's become such a stap as a strikeout pitch over the years and what's so tough as a hitter is that you see it extremely well the problem is the velocity and spin rate just happens to Jump by you you expand your Zone you don't stay tall on the back side and you're and here now the lineup for the Royals one guy leading the way offensively for this club right now Vinnie pasquantino and he's leading him in runs batted end this season which tells me this guy is able to slow things down when it seems like there's a little bit of pressure and he's looking at as an opportunity to do damage you know a lot of guys they see Runners on base and they get big they feel like all this pressure I've got to get these runs in but somehow he seems to settle in of these situation so watch out when he comes to the [Applause] play and that's in dir well he might have to look for a different putaway pitch right here 22 he's already seen the curveball couple of times in this atat so might have it timed up and ready for it that one missed Salvador RZ waiting for a turn at the plate two down nobody on and he walked him one of the things about that two out walk the base runner over at first base is going to have a very aggressive secondary lead so B down the line or into the Gap will produce a two out RBI and those are the best that is if you are the offensive side of it next pitch is down stairs two outs that one misses that's five straight he swings and fouls one off great RBI spot here just got to stay focused on the pitch the runner will be in motion so something in the gap should definitely score it 32 swings and misses it's a strikeout The Notches strikeout number 150 this season Royals leave one and now the Guardians will see what their bats can well he's been a very dependable starter for his club and what stands out for me is that left-handed hitters have really strugg batting below 200 against him and it just tells me they have a hard time tracking the baseball maybe it's the releas point maybe it's the motion but just some way somehow they've got to figure out a way to pick it up and try to have some success from the left side the wide to the pitch checks his swing peel to third no swing Gary Simmons with the [Applause] call on the ground right side Frasier tosses to first one gone bottom half of the first here's the Guardians lineup now a really frustrating showing for them in their last game lots of traffic on the bases but they left a ton of Runners on base couldn't cash in their chances Chris they had plenty of chances there's nobody to blame it on but themselves offensively they just did a poor job converting in those situations you have to figure out what's your plan going to be maybe watch some tape from the last game make the adjustments so if you get those opportunities in this one you've got a much better chance of scoring some runs the onew cuts and misses it's a strike [Applause] out batting third two outs B is empty stepping up for the Guardians Jose [Applause] Ramirez two out space is [Applause] [Music] empty kicks andand deals that one 95 to finish him off nothing do for the Guardians there we played an inning they'll score here in Cleveland here's the left fielder J Mendez MJ [Applause] Mendez that misses the zone two balls in a two one the count now he hasn't seen a fast ball yet but you've got to be ready to hit one because you doubt the pitcher wants this to go to a 3-1 count that one a 95 missed up top and that's ball three Patrick Johnson behind the plate Patty Johnson to Sun but I'd ask permission first before I called him that does a pretty good job back there occasionally we'll see a couple of sideways looks from players but that kind of comes with the territory right instead of letting the hitter get his arms extended tied him up a little bit slightly up slightly in singing what kind of strike zone is most frustrating for hitters I'd say off the plate away and down and why those are the toughest locations to hit the baseball now it's Hunter Renfro and the righty deals slides but he can't come up with it the second Adam one down here's the veteran second base Adam Frasier and he gets that fast ball by him upstairs two St man it first one [Applause] away w inside and that hit him he had him one two and he ends up hitting them with a pitch now it's Paul D young up to the plate and it's skip into dir good spot for the hitter definitely has the advantage in this count with Runners on look for him to be aggressive on this next pitch the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a double play in this spot in the air out towards left Center Quan sizes this one up drops into the [Applause] glove fi 2 Kyle so first and second with two outs and now it's Kyle Isbell it's early but these atts can impact a game just as much as they do later here's a chance to set the tone early for your team rander kick steals that's and another ball two on two outs and that one fouled off second inning here no score definitely got the hitter conscious of the pitch inside will Brennan one down base is empty that one lifted to left Melendez makes the grab two down batting the second Bas Andre here's Andre simz we talking about guys with good speed and definitely he has it but pushing the offense aside for just a second Chris it's the defensive side that I think the speed factors in the most and that is the third out of the inning we'll move to the third with no score back here in Cleveland all set for the start of the inning so up now for Kansas City Bobby Whit Jr righty delivers swinging a foul back that's out of play Go Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game whips it to first on the Run throw is high and over his head well I definitely think the speed down the line played a factor on that throw he had more time than he thought but as a Fielder the speed of the game G and the speed of the runner sometimes can get in your head and he just rushed it and failed to make a clean throw stepping in Vinnie pasquantino man it's second hey it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bullpens [Applause] that one out to right Brennan makes the play rer tags it second and he's in safely a third with one out the and now it's Salvador Perez to the plate I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone here pitchers looking for a strikeout or a ground ball hoping to keep that runner at third here's a one one sliced to right Brennan taks the gra Runner tags for home it's a sa f as he comes across the score and it's one nothing that wasn't your standard sack fly he barel that baseball just couldn't get it to drop in and now MJ Melendez one run acrossing the frame so far we're here in the top half of inning number three swing and a miss and that's strike two and another ball two down nobody on struck Him Out Swinging pulled the string on the change up so it's one run no base hits one error and no one left on we head now to the home half of inning number three it's the Royals one and the Guardians nothing set for the bottom of the third here's lanee Thomas he's a guy Chris's highlights include some of the best throws from The Outfield that you will ever see definitely one of the best arms of the [Applause] sport swing in a Miss nice change up yeah the infielders and the catcher can never give up on a play because if this guy thinks he has a chance he's going to throw from a warning track if he has two and the pitch on the ground Frasier tosses to first one up one down batting the C who B nailor at the plate now taken high in the draft he's had that top prospect labeled over him since he put on a professional uniform but it's some point that starts to go away and you've got to produce at the big league level and and this one could be extra bases makes the turn and heads for second and he starts his afternoon off right with a [Applause] double that ball was absolutely ripped 111 off the bat and I'm pretty sure it started to whistle after it left the bat I think I heard that too boan these are the moments we appreciate when we can look at statcast and just see exactly what the data is all always so much fun to see what numbers pop up second out now back left field back to the top of the lineup now the left fielder Steven Quan this guy makes great contact one of the best in the game at putting Bat on Ball he's got such quick hands and he's gaining pitch recognition that keeps him Square to the plate there's a good chance that his bat stays in the zone a long time and that produces solid contact [Applause] [Music] consistently and a one two that's foul off to the right side keeps the ab going man on second two down two [Applause] and now it's three and two number 10 up next left hand batter Waits that one the other way he's misses and that's ball [Applause] two good eye right there good spot there but didn't get the strike at the knees and doesn't seem too convinced by the call out there on the mound as he tries to get a [Applause] empty and it's even up swings through that one it's a strike out he came out of his mechanics there typically likes to shoot the ball the other way but that time little anxious two outs disciplined at the play so many of their outs have come from weak contact on pitches they're chasing outside of the strike zone you can't do much of anything with those locations and that's been true again today 32 now that one misses so lead off walk a great back and forth and that back play off some really close pitches and somehow found a way to keep the B on his shoulder right there I'll tell you right now tying Run is it first we're here in the bottom of the fourth pick off throw and he's back in easily and as a pitcher when the hitters are swinging at everything you feel no need to challenge inside the zone you just keep working the corners and expanding that runner on the go pitches low throw tag out what a throw by Salvador Perez just a mechanically sound throw right there great footwork good transfer quick release all those things that you need to do you don't have to have the highest velocity but if you can throw it on the money you can throw out some fast Runners and a pitch to the right side now a jump awesome play there the first B number 22 nayor here's Josh [Applause] Naylor right through there for a strike he's pitching well but not throwing a ton of first pitch strikes usually doesn't work out for success but you can never predict [Applause] baseball foul ball still a one and two count and a foul ball he stays alive two outs and down on strikes he goes and and a nice inning of work there as he sets him down one two three ready now for the fifth inning so up now for Kansas City Kyle Isbell Bo this guy's just a tremendously talented center fielder Gold Glove caliber type out there offensively he can do some things but you know also has some streakiness as well I think the key is trying to find a way for him to be consistent day in and day out you know he saves runs in the Outfield so that's going to buy him more time to work things out at the dish up the middle gets to it with a slide and very nicely done for the out we saw a few skills on display there for the out technique was great reaction time was there and the slide was smooth watching that play Come Together was really fun at the batter now Michael Massie in the air left side Quan settles underneath it brings it in and there's two down the B number seven Bobby Whit Jr now he was drafted second overall by the Royals in 2019 adley Rutman was the only player taken ahead of him yeah he was part of a really good crop of Short Stops Bobby was the first one taken CJ ABS Bryson stot Anthony buul and gunar Henderson were also part of that draft class how good is that pretty pretty good you can stomach a two out walk to certain players but with his speed this guy out there in the base pass it could turn into two or three [Applause] bases so a foul ball makes it one and two Whit off of first with two away two outs that missed by a lot and it's two and two [Applause] would chase that time here in the fifth inning and here he is about to throw his 100th pitch man he's really had to grind through to get to this point Salvador Perez in on Deck Circle to First Dives back in safely now just about to hit that century mark 100 pitches for this game payoff pitch grab ball up the middle roio whips it to First and that is that so one left for Kansas City but they still lead it one nothing bottom of the inning now it's the right fielder will Brenan the [Applause] white the W to kick the pitch bounc to the right tosses to first and that's the first out in the bottom of the F well he's doing a nice job but keeping the ball out of the air lets the defense work behind him with another ground ball good execution and stepping in is the Speedy Andres [Applause] Jimenez and that's off the Inside Edge now two balls and a strike top of the zone and it's called a strike one way to make a guy real uncomfortable with the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they're doing that right [Applause] here one down base is empty chases the fast ball up the ladder struck him out and Chris that's a way to neutralize his speed by keeping him off Bas and the def breathes a s relief because he puts pressure on everyone if he can put the ball in play but that's how you do it keep him off balance get him out of there and deal with the next guy Lane Thomas digs in for the Guardians that's to Third and he can't come up with it and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score [Applause] it the B the catcher so two down and next is the Guardians catcher B nailor this is a guy who's in the lineup first and foremost because of what he contributes defensively Chris and when you talk about preventing runs from being scored this guy is a big contributor the one one R takes off misses second with a stolen base singy he definitely showed off the wheels there yeah and it turned out to be a bang bang play stat cast gives us the data and that stolen base wasn't possible without that Sprint speed kicks and fires just missed I was always told it's hard to take you off the field when you play really good defense especially at a premier position and that's what he does 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it first and second two outs now here is Ryan roio tying run and scoring position last half of inning number five line to left and foul [Applause] ball the pitch that's ball [Applause] on the ground to the left a dive nice stop and that's a great play for the out Guardians strand a couple still behind by a count of one to [Applause] nothing all right we go to the top half of in number six that'll be the cleanup hitter for the Royals Salvador Perez comes up empty that strike two really looks like these hitters have been in between with their timing today good fast excellent slider but they've not been able to commit to one velocity and stay there the pitch and another ball [Applause] chase that [Applause] time that one ripped and that's a fair ball couldn't have timed it up any better than that maybe a little out front of the pitch right there but he squared it up pretty good and he kept it inside the line and just did a really nice job on the other side by the defense to hold that to a long single manager out of the Dugout now and it looks like we'll see a change on the mound Tanner byby out of the game and as he heads for The Dugout we'll take a quick break new arm on the mound when we get back Tim Haron takes over on the mound and they felt it was time to bring on a left-handed reliever from the pin with the Lefty hitter coming up I think it's a good move I know I never liked when opposing team did that to me and next up for the Royals MJ Melendez the pitch squares pushes at it misses it it's a strike and the count one and two Perez aboard here at first with nobody out and now it's even up well he's really working him away this bat sometimes take a little bit off velocity try to get a roll over something on the ground stay away from that big hole on the right side of the infield and now look filled up [Applause] on right through there for a strike no need to off with that pitch until you get to two strikes it's just a low percentage of success when you want to try to go after that down and Away get a walk everyone gets a so one out with two aboard and to the play for Kansas City Adam Frasier at the dish looking to lift the ball in the air in this spot anything but the inning ending double play boo F off foul swing and a pop off in foul gra Ramirez drifts towards it puts it away for the out yeah that was a wasted RBI opportunity but competitor like him he is looking forward to make it up for it in his next attat here's the third baseman Paul D young he's been such a good hitter with Runners and scoring position some guys just take it to another level for him right now at the plate it's like everyone else is in slow motion and he's in full speed well this is a higher leverage spot and I love the way that he's turn things around he's got two outs now ahead in this count and he can pretty much dictate what's going to happen next in terms of the pitch sequence first and second two down and we're the top half of the six the next offering misses two and [Applause] two and a swing in the Miss that's the third out no runs a hit two left top of the order do up in the home half of the six it's the Royals one and the Guardians [Applause] nothing back down now at Progressive Field well we go bottom six at the pl Steven and he chases a high fast there come and get the fast right there he didn't look ready for the velocity I think it'd be a mistake to throw him anything off Kyle Isbell you're talking about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the [Applause] list right back to him on the mound throws to First and center field Thomas should have this one pulls it down and there's two gone the B number seven short now here's Bobby Wht Jr two down nobody on three balls one strike right through there for a strike just a really nice slider down and in there he wants to get the hitter Thinking Fast Ball speed him up and just subtract some velocity and add a little movement swung on belted way back there forget it his 26th of the year and they tack one on the board it's two nothing he absolutely feasts on right-handed pitching and devour is that one for a homer and you can see that's what he expects of himself at bat after at bat he's that confident when you see a guy take a slider on the outside part of the plate and hit an opposite field home run fires you up because not only is he flexing the muscles to show the pop that kind of approach you'll hit for a high average as well so two away with nobody on Vinnie pasquantino getting ready to hit now the throw to first on the run in there safely the catch runner at first with two away and now it'll be the cleanup spot for the Royals Salvador Perez two outs highfly ball out at the left center field Thomas sizing this one up and makes the grab and that is that and a run to the Royals lead with this Homer and it's two zip back after this on the show we're back in a new pitcher here to start the bottom of the seventh Sam long and he's been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year typically at least one in any so it'll be tough to get to Sam long here's the second BAS Andres Jimenez well these fans definitely want to get involved in the game all it's going to take is to get the lead off man or even a base runner on foul ball there well on paper it's favorable to have a fairly quick inning here with two of the three hitters he set to face batting from the left side same side he throws from swings and misses couldn't hit the fast ball at the knees a big first down here in the seventh VI of the punch out yeah it just does so much to change the Outlook of an important inning like this when you got the lead off hitter so critical in setting the table when you got a tight game like this so a strikeout really puts them on being on the same page and that's something that this guy does really well gets in sync with his pitchers left field pulls it down and he makes the catch and that is that and we're back ready to begin the eighth and to the plate for Kansas City MJ Mendez Mendez boo his preparation is off the charts I was in the clubhouse today trying to find him just to pick his brain a little bit he's so buried in that video room it's hard to get a chance to talk to him the 2-1 and that one fouled [Applause] off here's the two two got it by him for the P third time he struck out in this one and definitely idual performance you want to flush he just hasn't looked very comfortable up there just one of those days but when you're still winning the ball game at least you can focus on doing your part to maintain that lead and getting that W swings through that one for strike two that's that slur right there he threw it extremely well talk about just a ton of breaks so tough to get that Barrel to one two makes right there but he'll take it every time there are a lot of nicknames people have attached to hits like that blooper Flair duck snort lard Etc but whatever you want to call it it's a knock and those are the ones that'll make you smile as a hitter just about every time swings and misses struck him out Royals leave one they're up two nothing back now new pitcher on the mount as we roll into the bottom of the eth Will Smith this Southpaw has been really good against left-handed hitters now here is Ryan roio the short stop [Applause] that one fouled off and now it's one and two keeps the it back going with a foul [Applause] ball and a pitch backed off the plate that time straighten him up a little bit comes the two two fights it off he'll see another and the pitch spoils that one and it remains two and two Out Swinging he didn't make it easy for him on the mound but they still get the strikeout toughest pitch to hit fast ball on the outer FL man sometimes you just got to tip your [Applause] cap so the lineup flips over here's the left fielder Steven Quan one down base is empty and no throw for some reason as he reaches first that's be an erated and next is the designated [Applause] hitter tying run at the pl Runner around the goal and a count one and [Applause] two and that'll fall for a base hit and they'll have Runners at the quarters after a one out single well those kind of Lucky soft hits will always make you smile that line drive isn't going to line up stat cast or anything like that but it gets the job done and he just kind of caught it on a weird spot of the bat but he didn't get cheated with the swing that's for sure here's Jose Ramirez and things could change quickly here with one swing these fans they are ready to cheer about something left the out of the stretch Runners at first and third swing in a Miss as he was out front big pitch right here he's going to try to make a pitch it's going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double [Applause] play and another ball if you're on the mount right now you know you have to retire this hitter if he gets on base it could open up the floodgates for this offense to score some runs two on one out swing and a miss struck him out well that event seemed to be over as soon as it started three pitch strikeout you got to be better at the pl right there at least to foul something off extend that at back Lucas AET taking over on the mound he's been so good against lefties digging in Josh nailen that's down and in and that's B it away Chris with that distraction and a speedy guy at first he's in a favorable hitters count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in two on two outs and that a load the bases pretty much the last thing you want from your bll PIN arms or free passes especially in spots like this make the team earn their way off and up next for Cleveland will Brennan and there's no doubt that they'll feed off the energy from this crowd right I mean yeah I'd say the intensity level has gone up a few notes for sure so the tying run at second and that one fouled [Applause] off swings through it and that's a strike out sometimes he wears the
