the show has action out of the AL Central it's the Kansas City Royals taking on the Cleveland Guardians all right we'll be back to get this one started after this so just about set now and today's starting pitcher Matthew Boyd tell us about him in that sub three er singy well anytime you can keep your ER under three you're doing a lot of things right and you're putting your team in a position to win a lot of ball games as well and he's doing tremendous out there on the mound every time he gets the ball you expect him to go out there and dominate and that's what he's been to this point we'll see how he is today here's the second basem number 11 the pitch Clips the outside corner and we are underway next offering is in for a [Applause] strike and now the Lefty cuts on it and misses that's a strike out chase the fast B up the ladder for strike three now it's going to be Bobby Whit Jr pass ball for a strike the short stop takes the ball strike on the inside corner one and two one out base is empty and that skips in dirt on the line base hit so a man aboard now with one away just a solid swing right there caught it out front and ripped it into the outfield for the base hit those always feel great and now a chance to maybe get creative on offense with good speed on First and now the center fielder Vinnie pasquantino boy keeping an eye on him just missed in the dirt well done behind the dish wit over at first with one away [Applause] that one's in there and it's two and one that fast ball even though it's up that's the velocity you want to go after low 90s a lot better runner on the go line drive base hit lead Runner around second and they'll have Runners at the corners after a one- out single back-to-back base hits fast ball off the plate a little bit but a really nice job of going with it punched it to the opposite field for that knock now it'll be the cleanup hitter for the Royals Salvador Perez Outfield playing very deep not wanting anything over their heads sliced the other way and foul the last thing he wants is to hit the ball on the ground but I wouldn't expect many pitches up in the zone they'll be pitching for a double play in this spot Lefty out of the stretch Runners at first and third and a swinging a Miss there big pitch right right here he's going to try to make a pitch it's going to produce a strike out or a ground ball double [Applause] play got him huge strike out there definitely a strikeout situation right there and he got it you do not want him to put the ball in play and want to strand that runner at third now all he needs is one more out to get it doesn't have to be a strike out this time since now they're two outs next is the RO catcher Freddy fine just missed and fouled off [Music] now a bullet to second base but he's got it to end the inning Royals strand a pair now the Guardians will get their shot still scoreless you're watching Major League Baseball on the show back now at Progressive Field and and on the hill in this one Seth Lugo well what quickly stands out to me for this guy is that he comes in with a 3 to1 strike out to walk ratio on the season so when you consider consistency the ability to get swings and misses and to limit base runners that's critical in winning games today especially when teams are depending on the big swing the home run to win ball games bottom of the first now the left fielder Steven Quan that misses and that's ball one right through there for a [Applause] strike next offering is in for a strike so far all we've seen in the satter fast balls look for him to slow it down right here ahead in the count leftand hitter Waits swing and he breaks his b one gone bottom half of the first here's the Guardians lineup now someone who makes things happen for them in part with his legs Tyler Freeman well boo there aren't many guys who have a flare for the big moment like he does I mean batting over 400 with runners in scoring position are you kidding me I I know it's not guaranteed or an automatic but I hope we get to see him in a close late game situation with runners in scoring position and just see is he truly a machine or not Lane Thomas batting with one down takes a strike up the middle oh great grab on the dive throws from the seat of his pants he's in there this is great work by the short stop he makes the throw across the diamond after the dive and just wasn't able to get it there in time but I love how much he put into that play and on the other side he was really given it his all down the line as well nice play on both ends man it first tell you what you are baffled expecting that to almost hit you and then end up as a called strike David fry will hit next definitely scuffling at the dish lately under the Mendoza Line so far this month hard hit left side sends it to Perez that's out number three one left for the Guardians scoreless after one and welcome back to the ballpark now here is MJ Melendez boy back to work fast ball for a strike Boyd 33 years old he joined the team as a free [Applause] agent next pitch is outside Gary Simmons has the pl Duty in this one well with Simmons it's not always your standard Strike Zone boo it kind of gives a little extra in some parts of the zone and then can be tighter in others but I think the important thing is he doesn't get labeled as inconsistent so you got to stay ready up there right through there for a strike yeah one of those umpires you just have to know what to expect right [Applause] exactly and down on strikes he goes and there's one away no messing around with the pitch calling in that sequence right there four pitches all fast balls yeah and that makes me think that was the plan before the hadat even started if you think you can simply just beat a guy with only your fast ball why throw him anything else until he shows you he can handle it Paul D young steps in for the Royals and first offering is fouled off one down base is empty that one ripped that's down one hops off the wall and he's got a double man those are the types of hits where you don't feel any vibration in your hands whatsoever such a good feeling a welld deserved double on a great swing got everything going on time he stayed balanced and he squared it up about as well as you could possibly ask runner in scoring position now and a good opportunity to push across the first run of the ball game one out runner at second and now the right fielder drone Blanco just missed [Applause] two balls no strikes to count fouled off he was late pitch misses there three and one now runner at second here one gone inside Ball Four pretty easy walk right there last pitch wasn't even much to think about here's Adam Frasier and that one fouled off on the ground could be two Freeman to Second and that's two got the batter to hit it exactly where he wanted that textbook 643 double play gets out of the jam and back in the Dugout back here in Cleveland here's Josh Naylor the first the pitch tapped at the plate but it's a foul ball here comes the 01 and there's the strike back door him with the breaking ball just got the corner there's nothing you can really do with that and that's in the dir left hand batter Waits got him one down wow that's a tough call for the hitter but the pitcher will take that all day long not quite in the strike zone but he found a spot that the Umpire is going to at least for now allow him to get that call so hitters going to have to make an adjustment but pitchers are going to learn from those things and really try to exploit them if they can and now here is John Kenzie Noel swing and a miss going one the wind in the pitch swings through that [Applause] struck Him Out Swinging slider got him for strike three we take a look at the three- pitch sequence here pretty simple in terms of putting them away at the plate once you're ahead 02 as a pitcher you can really expand the zone and see how aggressive that hitter is going to be trying to protect in battle and right there clearly he was in swing mode but all you can can do is hope to foul that off here's Andre Jimenez and the first pitch misses for ball oneall strike one and he grounds one back up the middle and it finds its way through for a hit and that keeps the inning alive everything came together for him once you get the ball by the pitcher there's a lot of base hits up the middle even on ground ball so a nice job to use that big hole and get himself a hit and now let's see if they force some action with good Wheels on the [Applause] bases Tyler Freeman in the box now no balls in a strike no score here in the second [Applause] very dominant with that fast ball inside hitters going to be conscious of that now you have the outer half of the plate to work with out there on the around not an easy call there but that puts an end to the inning sometimes he wears the emotion on the sleeve but that's okay as long as you get results and right there thrilled with the punch out to get out of a jam top half of the third inning now here's the lead off hitter for the Royals number 11 the Lefty fires rolled softly but that goes foul and here it comes [Applause] goes down swinging for the strike out pulled the string on the change up he's locked in at the plate when he's using the whole field he was out in front there just needs to let the ball travel a little more and his timing will be back on track good pitch for the strikeout Bobby wit Jr steps in for the Royals that misses off the outside edge one down base is empty fast ball for a strike top of the third no score the one- one is fouled off swing and a ball hammered left field and it bangs off the top of the wall safely into second he's got a double well that'll make you feel good as a hitter right there put a pretty good swing on that one as he drove it out to deep left didn't quite have the right combination of launch angle and exit velocity to get it over the fence but you're never going to be disappointed with extra bases one down Vinnie pasono steps in for the Royals now a check on him at second back [Applause] safely Now One Missed wouldn't chase that [Applause] time that one spoiled and the count now two and one good eye right there get ready for some action here good RBI guy at the plate runners in scoring position and a hitters count 3-1 and he couldn't come up with it and to the plate for Kansas City Salvador Perez went down on strikes his first time through double steel line drive base hit Here Comes Whit around third and they'll score first it's one ZIP and the throws offline safe at third well there you go the RBI machine another clutch run scoring it back yeah he's been so good at these situations call it clutch if you want but his resume speaks for itself Runners at the corners here one away Freddy fine steps in for the Royals first pitch [Applause] misses kicks and Deals could be some action here on this next pitch couple Runners on probably a challenge pitch coming two on one out and that misses off the outside edge back door breaking ball just missed right there and boy umpire didn't give him the call I bet you if he throws it again hitter knows he's going to have to swing it next offering is in for a [Applause] strike foul off down the right side got him swinging for the strike out couldn't catch up to the heater good pitch right there I mean he's attacking a location that this guy at the plate tends to have trouble with and there's just so much information in this day and age sometimes too much information but the guys that can take that information process it and then go out there Bo and execute the pitch go right after that hitter and get the result that they were an anticipating that's really good pitching right there and it's a good job of the pitcher and the catcher working together here's the left fielder MJ Melendez outside and that is ball [Applause] one that one almost got him not showing great command so far in this at bat 20 count he's got to execute here or this could get ugly next offering is in for a strike Pas quintino on third Perez at first two out of the inning fought off foul two on two outs swinging a drive deep right field that's back there and gone his 17th of the year and they tack on three it's four nothing so many times a sinker inside is a foul ball off the ankle for the batter but that time he did a really nice job of staying inside the pitch and getting through it so two down Paul D young steps in for the Royals that catches the top part of the Zone that's strike one well a really rough inning out there on the mound and uh this is one of those where you learn a lot about a guy's toughness and his ability to turn the page and keep pressing forward and that one's a little bit low one and one two out space is [Applause] empty and that's outside really good take especially with two strikes spoils that one and it remains two and two two down dolanan that one just misses just missing off the plate there according to the Umpire and out there on the mound maybe trying to get an explanation can't say he's convinced but it looks like he's accepted it got him looking that'll end the inning after a lot of scoring Royals grab three on this Homer it's now a 4 nothing ball game back after this on the show ready to go for the last half of the inning now the left fielder Steven Quan the wind to kick the pitch that's hard hit in the line Pas quintino right there to make the grab one away number here's Lane Thomas reached on an infield single this first time gets the call strike one ball one there the Royals leading by four here in the last half of the Third [Applause] and a good eye there hard grounder into the outfield for a knock so they get a man aboard with a one out single seems like he got exactly what he was looking for right there everyone's trying to elevate the ball in today's game but if you can hit a ball that hard on the ground it's going to find some holes Jose Ramirez digs in now he was a strikeout victim his first time it's a pitch out nothing doing and that's ball one the pitch bounced to the right side and a base hit lead Runner touches second headed for third in there [Applause] safely so one out with two aboard here's the third baseman David fry he's over for one and first offering is fouled off rander kicks deals hit hard that gets through in comes the run from third to trim the lead it's 4-1 well done Narrows the deficit with the the RBI there just kept it simple played Pepper with the middle of the infield and took it back where it came from and there's just no one there to knock it down two on with one out Josh Naylor digs in for the Guardians caught looking his first time [Applause] up just off the outside edge and it's w to know well he's just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter might be a good time for somebody to call timeout maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit check swing and that's a ball Runners at first and second with one gone at the belt and fires in the air right center this is mashed way back and gone and we're all square it's 44 how in the world did he do that that pitch was outside the zone and he still got it out of here knew what pitch he wanted to hit spit on some other pitches in this at bat was very patient and it paid off [Applause] stepping up for the Guardians John Kenzie Noel fast ball for a strike well they've been able to score four runs off of them in this inning and this is where you want to just max out get as much as you can give him one of those tough Innings where it's going to be hard for him to recover in the next one and that's in for a strike [Applause] swings through it and that's a strike out well that right there is just a pitcher's pitch tailing away from The Hitter loow away with some good action at the end you know even if he gets the back to that ball it's probably just a weak ground ball to the opposite side tell you what that's a tremendous two- strike pitch and up next for Cleveland Andres Jimenez and first off ring is fouled off and a pitch foul ball tied at four got him swinging Guardians put up three on this Homer all even now at four piece it's Major League Baseball on the show out to the fourth so up now for Kansas City drone Blanco as he turns on the Rubber and with that good live arm delivers yeah there's the strike well these Royals showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one pitch count is pretty high and they played it four runs already so I think it's safe to say their game plan is working out pretty well right now they had a foul ball so they forced the starter to put in a lot of work and they've been able to get to him for some runs and hopefully that Bullpen phone is working today the next pitch misses and the counts even a two got him swinging he chased the change up picks up strikeout number seven very frustrating right there as a speedy potential base runner when with two strikes you just struggle to put the ball in play you don't even have to get a hit at that point you can help your team just by reaching on an error but some way got to find a way to shorten up the swing and put the ball in play next time next to hit Adam Frasier that's down and in all tied up top half of inning number four just missed Off the Mark there ball three well I would expect in this three-oh count you're taking all the way see if they'll walk you fast ball for a strike and now it's filled up battling here as he fouls it away [Applause] bounced up the middle jenez jump throw Frasier [Applause] retired now it's the second baseman who's over for two with a tied at four bottom of the fourth here's Tyler Freeman to hit the wi of the pitch swing and a popup foul territory for the catcher fine pulls it in for the out and a quick out number one got the pitch that he wanted just a little bit quick front shoulder open backside collapsed a little bit and the launch angle not where he needed it to be Austin Hedges stands in struck out swinging his first time and that one fouled off next offering is down low one ball one strike Bas is empty one away we're here in the bottom of the fourth and a [Applause] pitch keeps the it back going with a foul ball the wine of the pitch swing and a miss struck him out had him way out front of the slur definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there I don't think that's a strike if he takes it pretty textbook pitching get ahead in the count get the guy in the Box on his heels and then force him to chase your pitch where he doesn't have much of a chance to do any damage so the Guardians lineup turns over Steven Quan digs in for the Guardians first pitch just misses this is important if he can go one two three here will be a very very positive sign for him and for his team righty delivers it's in and out of his glove but he wins the foot race to First good job of knowing how much time he had there the Guardians go down in order this game's all tied at four and we're back top five John shabi with Chris Singleton and leading it off Bobby wit [Music] Jr Boyd back to work that's ripped and this one could be extra bases around first heading for two and he's got his second double of the game [Applause] go ahead run on base here's the center fielder Vinnie pasquantino that one finds the zone and it's own and one well these Royals digging into their numbers have to be happy with the swings they're taking we've heard lots of loud noise coming from their bats in this one haven't we I mean they've lost six hits at 90 plus exit velocity and that doesn't happen by accident a little bit High and it's a ball a strike fast ball for a strike well he went inside a couple of times and now outside bit's not exactly sure where to look for this next pitch [Applause] and the onew misses to even the count that's where you want it's a good Miss outside eighth pitch of the at back coming up knocks that one away and we'll do it again and he deals up the middle Freeman slings to first he made the pitcher earn that out after a long at bat not a bad outcome in that spot the runner moves up to Third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run it's not a knock but at the end of the day it's a good at bat and now it'll be the cleanup spot for the Royals Salvador Perez just missed slap the other way foul look out that ball was smoked man I am so relieved that they have this netting down the lines just ensure safety for the fans last thing is a player you want to look up and see a fan get hit one away with a runner at third and we're at the top of the fifth LLY try base hit into to score from third 54 now as they take the lead well done drives in the run pretty much a model swing on that one as he ripped it into the opposite field Gap and I'm sure he's going to be watching that one back on video because that's the kind of Swing you want to bottle so many positives that led to that knock manager out of the Dugout now and it looks like we'll see a change on the mound Matthew boy won't go any further tonight and it's going to be a start that he'd like to get a redo on not his best back with a new arm in a minute so Cleveland brings on a new relever Tanner BBY still pretty early in the ball game so this Bullpen has some work ahead of him best case scenario might be if he can come in here and get several quick outs kind of bridge the gap that starter left for him one down runner at first Freddy fine steps in for the Royals and that's in for a strike by measures 6' 2 in 25 years old and he was a fifth round pick in 2021 Perez the runner at first with one gone in the [Applause] inning next pitch misses and now it's even one and one meanwhile activity in the bullpen Nick Sandlin the young right-hander up and throwing now it's belted deep to left way out of here home run his seventh home run of the season and they add to the lead it's 74 and that shot makes their grip on the lead even tighter well he put a really nice swing on that one and everything was on time took a direct path to the ball excellent extension and just drove it out of here nothing better than when the ball jumps off your bat like that MJ Melendez steps in for the Royals fast ball for a strike going one still only one out here in the inning swing and a miss as he was out front that time that's off the mark and the count one and two well he missed badly with that 02 fast ball hitter has to understand probably wants to try to put him away with that pitch so got to stay ready for it Fly ball to right Noel hauls it in for the out and there's two away maybe caught that one off the end just a little bit couldn't quite Barrel it up enough to really drive it so digging in Paul D young Outfield playing very deep not wanting anything over their heads first offering and it just misses really close pitch down around the knees there and you could see him asking where it missed probably doesn't agree but it appears he's ready to move on to the next pitch swings and misses and it's one and one here's a swing and a drive left field and he knew it and they add a run it's 84 that's a swing that'll boost the win probability for sure looks like this guy was looking out over the plate but he was ready to turn on the inside fast ball so direct to the pitch absolutely blasted out of this ballpark and next up for the Royals dyrone Blanco edge of the zone for a strike it's own and [Music] one two down nobody on that breaking ball is in for a strike and quickly it is nothing in [Applause] two and that skips in the dirt the onew ground ball right side he steps on the B and they're happy to just get off the field after that frame but two round Trippers in this inning the long ball was working it's now 84 you're watching Major League Baseball exclusively on the show back now at Progressive Field we head to the bottom of the fifth and now Lane Thomas thas the pitch he swings and fouls one off foul ball there and a pitch up the middle on to First and the lead offense set down in their half of the fifth good Sinker low in the zone right there and produced exactly what he was looking for ball on the ground nice ground out so now the DH spot Jose Ramirez fou back ourway and that's out of play here comes a pitch that's a bullet but it goes foul the Royals leading by four last half of inning number five next pitch is outside and that's downstairs and outside and another ball right side and base [Applause] hit that's back-to-back singles for him just one of those scen eye base hits through the infield he just kind of rolled over on it a little bit but sometimes those can a hole and get you a knock now David fry one for two check on the runner and he's back in safely I think you want to get a one-way lead be very aggressive in the secondary this hitter not a power guy so you want to make sure that you can get some length on the secondary lead and perhaps scoring a ball in the Gap Ramirez leads off first with one away there's a swing and a drive and no one can get there coming home he'll score easily it's 8 to five puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI and you connect in a jumps off your bat like that you're thinking double at the very least put a great swing on it and man he wasn't fooled at all Josh Naylor digs in for the Guardians he's already homered here in this one top of the zone for a strike one and one one out and a runner at [Applause] second ripped to short over to first now two out Ken John Kenzie Noel now at the plate on the inside corner for a [Applause] strike strike two he finds himself in a tough situation early just got to try to simplify it take a knock the other way if you can and the rander deals foul ball still o and [Music] two chases that one out of the zone and that'll keep more runs from coming in inning over but a run will score in the Inning on this RBI double it's now 85 you're dialed into the show here in Cleveland now at the plate Adam Frasier the pitch wouldn't chase that time and a base hit right there well a swing like that can help you come out of the struggle we saw the numbers coming into the ball game but all he's trying to do at this point is help his team win so the Royals batting order turns over here's the second basem that one fouled off [Applause] the pitch and a swinging to miss nobody out runner at [Applause] first and ball one next offering is downstairs he's trying to stay down in the zone but the hitter just will not Chase now back in a two- two count he's going to have to go to something else to get him out line drive Quan makes a nice grab at a full Sprint so up next Bobby Wick Jr three for three's doubled twice and single first pitch doesn't find the Zone there goes the runner and that'll fall for a base hit into third now so Runners at the corners and one out hitting is really easy for some guys one thing that I can see already is bat stays in the Zone on plane for an extended period of time and guys like that they have a high contact rate and they have more barrels because of that bat being on plane and even when you don't get it great it's still hit hard enough to dunk something in like that in front of the center fielder and the batter now Vinnie p Santino and that one just missed off the outside [Applause] edge right-handed reliever and another ball Chris with that distraction and the Speedy guy at first he's in a favorable hitters count well if nothing else I mean this is a great spot for a hitter to be in there's the swing in a Miss great spot to be in right here for the pitcher you can either strike this guy out or get a ground ball double play two on one out foul ball another two two upcoming leftand hitter Waits swing and a ground ball out to short that's a base hit as a run scores two consecutive base hits for this team not much to this one other than just a willingness to go the other way and put the ball in play that's a team to bat right there nice job of staying back and letting the ball get deep Tim Haron comes on now and he's been racking up strikeouts at a high rate this year typically at least one in inning so he'll be tough to get to so first and second with one man gone Salvador Perez getting ready to hit that Cliffs a corner and a pitch that Clips The Zone and that is strike two don't play situation here he's been working up in the zone typically you look for guys to get that ground ball see if he adjusts on this next pitch kicks and fires and there's a ball [Applause] got him and there's two away oh there he gets the slider in on his hands and it just eats him off you know it's hard to get the bat around on a pitch like that in tight you just feel like you're crowded on the inside part of the plate can't get any extension that's what he definitely should have laid off of so two down now and here is Freddy fine can't forget the two-run shot he launched out of here in the fifth yeah one of the biggest swings of the game bug as he looks to make even more of an impact in this at bat right here ball one no [Applause] strikes swing and a ball ripped out towards right center field that'll TouchDown for a hit one run across around third the relay to the plate close play but in there and it's now a six run lead nicely done brings home two man that feels so good to shoot an absolute Bolt the opposite way split the Gap and know that you've got extra bases right off the bat that's the kind of thing hitters dream about when they're falling asleep at night [Applause] and first off ring is fouled off the Royals up big in this one and we're the top half of the sixth [Applause] the pitch and down on strikes they limit the damage here three runs on four hits no errors and one left off 789 to up up in the home half of the inning it's the Royals 11 and the Guardians five and welcome back to the ballpark bottom of the six and now Andres Jimenez the wind and the pitch and that one just misses a ball and no strikes clearly down in this ball game and you can't look at the deficit and try to get it all back in one swing it's got to come one at bad at a time and even shrink it down smaller pitch to pitch make that guy on the mound work to get you out one way to make a guy real uncomfortable the plate is pound him inside with good velocity they're doing that right [Applause] here and the righty deals and now two and two righty to the plate now Fly ball to right Center should have this one drops into the glove and there's one down Tyler so in now for Cleveland Tyler Freeman the short stop takes the ball pulls that one foul one down base is empty swing and a miss and now the count is even good eye in that [Applause] spot outside and that is ball four second walk of the game for him and he's been really patient at the the play a game plan that he's sticking to he's just not going outside of what he's looking for up there and next is the Guardians catcher Austin Hedges just [Applause] missed that's towards Center pas quintino settles under this one squeezes it Sten Quan digs in for the Guardians singy he's a guy that covers both sides of the plate about as well as anyone in the sport how difficult is that to do well just look at the back of my bubble gum card you'll see how hard it is these guys are great man they have the ability to look out there but also to be able to turn on the inside pitch those that can really sharpen things on the outer half [Applause] those just off the inside corner now one and two man he's close as he's trying to get through six full innings right now he's about to throw his 100th pitch I'd be surprised if this isn't it for him that one way inside still two and two after the foul ball you could see he was trying to stay back long enough to handle the off speed pitch but just a little Tardy on the fast ball two outs spoils that one and it remains two and two left hand batter weights breaking ball inside and now it's three and [Applause] two natural flow that makes it hard for hitters to pick the ball up it gets on them a little bit quicker than they anticipate even though they know what the velocity numbers are and here comes swings
