[Music] hello Baseball fans and welcome MLB the show with a good one coming at you it's the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres first pitch coming your way next so almost ready to get underway and today's starting pitcher Michael K well he's been a real quality starter for his club and coming into this one what stands out for me is that right-handed hitters have really struggled batting below 200 on the year it seems they have a hard time picking up his release point and tracking the ball into the zone so we'll see how right-handers do against him in this one and stepping in for New York Francisco Lindor [Music] the pitch that one fouled off two and two the pitch swing and a miss struck him out now that high for scene fast ball has become such a great pitch for pitchers to finish hitters off they're trying to stay back with two strikes make sure that they can handle something off speed and just with good spin rate good rotation through The Zone elevated a little bit get a lot of swings and misses and that's a really nice job right there and now it's Mark Vientos so a foul ball makes it one and [Applause] two one down base is empty fights it off he'll see another keeps the it back going with a foul ball the pitch knocks that one away and will do it again also really good at bat what I like about this guy his Bat stays in the zone for a long time gives him the ability to foul off tough pitches and that's off the Inside Edge it's two and two eighth pitch of the back coming [Applause] up worm burner into the outfield for a knock so he gets a hit after a long battle with the pitcher just a greated bat right there saw a lot of pitches I really like that swing man he didn't just push it the other way through the infield he drove it that way and it kind of makes me think he was thinking opposite field as he stepped into the box got a pitch he liked and he got it done here is JD Martinez two1 that missed by a lot two and one Vientos over at first with one away fouled off he was late and the rhander deals and that one lifted in the air center field Meo brings it in two away down let's take a peak of the Mets lineup here the challenge for him today singy elevating the baseball against this Sinker baller that's on the mound yeah that's the challenge but it also might affect the way they approach base running in this one boo you get a runner on first you anticipate trajectory down and when the ball's in the dirt with a good secondary lead you break for second so whether it's a stolen base or not you stay out of the double play get that runner in a scoring position and that can help you put more runs on the board bid ball in dirt two outs and another ball way to lay off that fast ball up right there you're looking for something you see well that you can handle but you also have to keep the discipline so that you're not popping up pitches that are just a little too high [Applause] and the righty deals HS and misses it's a strikeout met strand one and now the Friars will get their first chance no score it's Major League Baseball on the show back here at beo Park and today's starting pitcher David Peterson what should we keep an eye on here well you can see his whip is a little above the league average not bad but I think in this one he's going to need to control that a little bit better try to limit Hitters from getting on base stay in that wind up instead of the stretch and when he does allow base runners be able to throw a pitch he's going to get a swing and Miss get out of the inning so that a base hit doesn't do more damage and put his te behind the [Applause] eightball the one- one is fouled off the Lefty fires [Applause] outside and a swing in a miss one away no need to deviate from the slider right there the hitter just not making the adjustment he came at him with the breaking ball pitch after pitch and that it bat and evidently there was no answer for it here's the switch hitting left fielder jerx and proar and the pitch on the ground right side toss to Alonzo and two quick outs in the bottom of the first here tonight as we take a look at the Padre's lineup been a real struggle this year they're at the very bottom of the league and on base percentage and of course when that's the case other offensive categories follow suit singy yeah Bo at times they come out early just to run the bases so that these players won't forget in case they are able to break out and you know get some hits and run around but yeah in all seriousness it's not a lot of fun when you're not getting on base when you're not out there um at least able to to to trade off and a runner on second base you get a knock you drive them in or you hit a double and you trade places with them all that kind of stuff just keeps you excited about the game and they just haven't been able to experience it very much Manny Machado up to the plate next offering is in for a strike Boo the runner at first needs to be careful right here he's dealing with a pickoff artist on the mount [Applause] kicks andial they'll rope into right and that's a base hit cronenworth they out second headed for third and now they'll have Runners on the corners with two away everything came together perfectly for him right there that pretty much split the Zone down the middle and those are the ones where you got to make them pay sander to the plate now he played in the soul series to open the 2024 season such a cool experience for both teams boo the Bogarts it was the fifth country he's played in oh now this Ball's going to get through and that's a b hit run scores easily and it's one nothing puts a run on the board and picks up an RBI couldn't get any air under it but he smoked that ball back up the middle timing was just perfect got great wood on it and there's just no chance for the infielders with how hard he hit [Applause] it first and second two outs Jackson merrow the next up for the Padres and the pitch Swang and a popup under it and the inning is over but they pick up one run on the RBI single it's an early one- nothing lead back here in in San Diego second inning set to go and now it's going to be Starling Marte and here it comes swing and a ball lifted to center field nabs it and there's one [Applause] down the second base Jose here's the veteran second baseman one out base is [Applause] empty next offering in there for a strike and the count one and two the other way pulls it down and they're two away red that is a positive sign even though it probably doesn't feel like it he hit the ball hard but it doesn't always work out in your favor sometimes a Defender is there to make a play Francisco Alvarez the next to hit now a blooper back behind short makes the grab and that's the inning and the Mets go down one two 2 three they're down one [Applause] nothing bottom of the second and here is David [Applause] Peralta and a one-1 and a good eye there [Applause] [Applause] that one to First a dive nice stop takes it himself and he got him nicely done at first for the out man a lot going on on that play diving stopped to his right in that hole and then gets up and takes it himself man it's a oneman show Kyle higashioka the next up for the Padres and another ball [Music] pitch in the dirt and that's ball [Applause] three kicks and fires fouled off again and a remains three and two so glad these ballparks have installed The netting to protect the fans keep things safer all around the lead couldn't catch up to the heater batting two out space is empty now batting Tyler Wade on the ground and foul ball two out space is [Applause] empty got him looking three up three down inning over nothing doing there for the friar but they still lead it one nothing and welcome back to the ballpark top half of the third inning and stepping in for New York Tyrone [Music] Taylor close but called the ball two and one [Music] [Applause] the pitch just [Applause] missed and the 3-1 now it's beled deep to left way out of here home run he circles the bases it's 1-1 that one was a hanger and pitchers typically don't get away with making a mistake like that and right there he made him pay and now Bader up to the [Applause] plate the pitch up the middle and he knocks it down no play that's an infield single back to the top of the lineup here's Francisco [Music] Lindor into Center and a base hit throw back in quickly first and second now with nobody out that's now three hits in a row for the offense I could watch base hits like that one all day long and so could every hitting coach in the lead just a nice line drive into center field Mark Vientos up now for the Mets outside low and it's two and one well he's just given up three straight hits and now behind in this count to this hitter might be a good time for somebody to call timeout maybe the pitching coach go out there and talk to him just a little bit the 2-1 Bing ball here rolls foul the real threats are coming up already given up a home run in this inning he going to really have to bear down this one popped up and the infield fly is [Applause] called two on one out now it's the DH JD Martinez it's early but but these atts can impact a game just as much as they do later here's a chance to set the tone early for your [Music] team right-hander kick steals in the dirt [Applause] blocked Runners stay put and the count moves to two and one tied up here in the early going part of the order coming through now and with one home run already in this inning they're definitely looking to do some more damage two on one out and another ball Pete Alonzo waiting to hit for the Mets payoff pitch got him swinging for the strikeout chase the fast up the ladder for strike three thought it was a pretty good pitch top of the strike zone we're seeing more fast balls in that location hitters especially with two strikes have to be ready to pull the trigger so first and second with two outs here's Pete [Applause] Alonzo two on two outs and a count one and two [Music] righty delivers cuts and misses it's a strike out well this guy competes hard we see the emotion there I love it great job with getting out of the jam [Applause] and we're back as we go to the last of the third Lis arise stands in you know this is kind of a tough matchup as a left-handed hitter facing a left-handed pitcher what you tell yourself is that one to stay Square to the plate try to hit the ball over the short Stop's head misses off the inside and the count is three and [Applause] one and there's [Applause] strike the L to the pitch Line Drive caught quick reactions down there at first and those can be tougher than they look sometimes there could be all kinds of weird spin or knuckling action on the baseball now batting Jer in Prof [Music] [Applause] now a screamer into the Outfield that's a fair ball and it's getting into a corner around first and hustling for second the throw in not in time he's got a double everything came together for him that can be a dangerous pitch if you don't get it inside enough because as a hitter you see it coming across the plate the whole way no problem handling it and putting a good swing on it that time now here's Jake cronenworth and it's second on the outside corner two and two now well Chris through the early stages he hasn't been very efficient in terms of the pitch count he's going to need to get some quick outs if he's going to get deeper into this game left hand hitter Waits spoils that one and it remains two and two it is interesting though when you consider the way the game is run now doesn't even matter that much if your starter doesn't go that deep because teams are really aggressively building their bll fense slings to First that takes care of pron and work not a bad outcome in that spot the runner moves up to Third and now they have a chance to drive in the go-ahead run it's not a knock but at the end of the day it's a good atat now Machado up here not a surprise he's off to a good start in this one given he enjoys playing so much at home let's see if he can make it two for two two outs that's in there and the count one and [Applause] two and another ball [Applause] [Music] and a miss struck him out huge strike out there Padre's leave one still tied [Music] 1-1 back here beo par as we go to the top of the fourth and stepping in for New York Starling Marte here comes a pitch wouldn't chase that time well these Mets showing great discipline at the plate and patience definitely seems to be the name of their game in this one he's only giving up one run but the starter pitch count is starting to get up there and that might be the best news yet for this offense puts it away for the out you know sometimes all it takes is getting to the next arm before an offense does any damage and that might be the case today now it's the second [Applause] baseman ball to strike that's hard hit in the line he Dives but can't hang on that's a base hit so a man aboard now with one away just so sound in his mechanics hits against a firm front side and the hands just to carry through the middle of the field Francisco Alvarez getting ready to hit move to First and he Dives back in [Applause] safely grounder might be two good feed that's one and that's two one hit in the inning but no one left we're Midway in the fourth All Tied 1-1 back here in San Diego John chabby and Chris Singleton with you and leading off the bottom of the four Xander [Applause] Bogarts the wi to kick the pitch fought off [Applause] foul got him swinging and one [Applause] away and now the center fielder Jackson [Music] merrow all tied up we're here in the bottom of the fourth pitches in there and it's one and two man I mean nice job just presenting it to be better than it actually was lifted in the air now the left side and it's [Applause] foul got it by him for the K definitely made him chase a little bit out of his own right there I don't think that's a strike if he takes it pretty textbook pitching get ahead in the count get the guy in the Box on his heels and then Force to chase your pitch where he doesn't have much of a chance to do any damage David Peralta at the plate two down do on outside low and it's two and one we got two balls one [Applause] Strike Up The Middle toss to Alonzo Padres go down one two three nothing doing there for the friar score remains deadlocked to a one ready now for the fifth inning and now here is Tyrone Taylor you know the first manager to ever win a game here at Petco Park was Tony Gwyn yeah yes Tony gwy they had a college baseball tournament here in March 2004 and Tony managed San Diego State to a win well these Mets just lacking discipline at the plate in this ball game chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we've seen it quite a bit today it's been tough for him to make contact at times and it just doesn't look like they're seeing it very well as a [Applause] group that to right should have this one makes the grab one away and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he's had him eaten out of the palm of his hand pretty much all game Harrison Bader will hit next [Applause] swing and a highfly ball down the right field line Peralta makes the grab two down now up to hit Francisco Lindor two down nobody on and we're at the top of the fifth next one misses three and one here's an opportunity to do some damage and perhaps unlock this offense 3-1 count be ready to turn on a fast ball [Applause] two outs ripped on a line Merill makes the grab and that'll do it nothing doing for the Mets score remains tied 1-1 we head to the bottom of the fifth stepping in for San Diego Kyle higashioka and he deals ground ball Alonzo he takes it on his own and a quick out number one [Music] now now it's the short stop Tyler Wade he's someone that you might not describe as having Elite level speed but he can absolutely move and it is a factor in his game and now the Lefty and a foul ball stays alive Bo this guy's definitely a plus Runner but what I love about him is that he goes all out every single time never takes a break it's guys like that even though they don't have the Elite Speed the fact that they're consistent with it they make moves on the base passs and he walked him it wasn't easy but he earned that walk after a long at bat well that's a nice job of grinding out that at bat saw a lot of pitches and ends up drawing the wall Very gritty so the San Diego batting order turns over and the batter now Luis [Applause] arise one away tie game goahead Run stands at first last half of inning number five Peterson keeping an eye on him the pitch swing a slow roller Lindor over to Second for one what a double play that was inning over they made it look easy but it started with a nice feed to the second baseman from the short stop perfect turn and they're out of this jam and we're back top six here's the third Bas Mark ventos third mark ventos and a pitch here's a high Chopper bounces into the Outfield that's a base headit so a man on base to start the inning really nice job staying up the Middle with his approach he didn't try to do too much with the pitch just shot it through the infield goahead run on base JD Martinez up now for the Mets [Applause] [Music] and the count one and two I got to call nlds game four here in 2022 at Peto Park where the Padres knocked out their Rivals the LA Dodgers the place was just nuts the entire game terrific fan support righty to the plate nice stop goes to Second for one back to First and that is a double play huge side relief with their big time pitching to induce the double play to erace what could have been the go-ahead run and now it's the polar bear pet [Applause] Alonzo the pitch and a foul ball the beauty of the skill set as a pitcher is the breaking of stuff doesn't go away when he's tired I mean his pitches always seem to have life just doesn't matter if it's early or late he doesn't make make it easy for the batter not close with that one and that's ball [Applause] two swing and a miss and he is down on strikes for the third straight at bat no runs one hit no errors and no one left two three four do up in the home half of the six all tied 1-1 bottom of the sixth inning so digging in now for San Diego jerkson proar and that's outside you know these Padres as this game goes on have to be more disciplined at the plate chasing pitches has been a big part of the story we've seen it quite a bit today it's been tough for them to make contact at times and it just doesn't look like they're seeing it very well as a group swing and a miss and on the mound you know confidence has to be pretty high with all of the swings and misses he's score the go ahead run that's exactly what happen so you better believe your teammates are happy with you after that advat and here comes the Mets manager to the pitching change coming David Peterson is done and we'll be back with their first arm out of the pen after a quick break the Mets with a new arm on the mound Danny Young he's got some of the best swing and Miss stuff going right now he's striking out hitters at a very high rate this year so this could be fun to watch here's Manny Machado listen there's absolutely no reason to pitch to this guy right here you nibble you see if he'll expand his Zone but don't give him anything to hit if you walk him not a big deal you have a double play opportunity set up and it's second swinging a chopper whips it across CR Machado out on the play the number two second bander Bart now here's Xander Bogarts now the one-1 High Fly ball out towards left field and it's off the wall but foul [Applause] this one in the air right field pulls up on it base hit here's the throw to the plate but it's off rine he will score and a 2-1 ball game now mission accomplished there as he picks up the RBI to give him the lead but the way Defenders track down balls these days I mean both from the infield and in the Outfield there really aren't a lot of base hits on balls hit like that but there's always a little room back behind the first and second basem to drop a long Dart in there and he found a way to Second and he's out that's the third out inning over but the RBI single pushes across a run and this is now a 2-1 ball game you're watching Major League Baseball on the show welcome back we're in the s we have a new pitcher on the map number 25 well the best relievers love the opportunity to come in and protect a tight lead late in the ball game some of them are just wired different so we'll see what he's got here well one run game Starling Marte now at the plate looking to get the tying run on base can't glove it cleanly and he's going to make it to First and we'll see how they score pretty much gifted a lead off base runner right there and as an offense this is where you really want to take advantage apply some pressure this lines a base hit into left field they fired in quickly so it's first and second with only one away well that's one of those knocks where you almost expect to get some Jabs from your teammates when you get back to the Dugout he clearly didn't catch that one on the big part of the bat just kind of it out there and you on the mound it can be pretty frustrating for a pitcher but you just kind of have to expect those to drop in there sometimes now we'll see if they can pick up that tie and run and start us over here in the late Innings FY ball down the line makes the grab tags up from second and he'll head to third Peralta whips it back in and the tying run puts on the breaks at third base pitching change here Tanner Scott well you see the ra very solid and that doesn't always tell you the whole story but he's been really good so far this year so up next Harrison Bader you talk about Elite defensive players especially in the middle of the diamond and this guy is at the top of the because of the power you want him to tie up the game with one swing here and the pitch and that one is lifted in the air Lindor retired one up on down now now the number two hitter Mark Vientos holding on to a one-run lead and we're in the top of the eighth got him looking two out oh just a beautiful fast ball on the inside corner for that backwards k right there I think the hitter saw it all the way coming from that opposite arm angle so I got to think he was was looking away and just got locked up by the hard stuff so the Padres with a new arm in the mound Jeremiah Estrada well he's got electric stuff coming out of the pin his strikeout rate though is through the roof so far this season now it's jady Martinez and that's off the Inside Edge and it's two and one [Applause] two down nobody on there's a swing and a drive see you later it just got out of here his second Homer this series and this game is tied it's 2-2 wow what a clutch swing right there and now anything can happen in this game what an incredible momentum swing on that home run boo I mean it's late in the game just barely stayed fair and ties up the ball game impressive and here's the first baseman Pete Alonzo the 2-1 and a foul ball back back and forth we go a seesaw battle in the late stages of this [Music] [Applause] one foul ball another two two [Applause] upcoming two outs swings and misses struck him out the Mets do pick up a run on this solo blast and we're deadlocked now at two AP piece bottom a welcome back as we've got a pinch hitter Donovan Solano looking for a spark to untie this [Applause] game and a pitch that's ball two balls [Applause] one ripped to First caught nothing you can do about those as a hitter even though you know that they still drive you absolutely crazy so the batting order turns over Luis AR getting ready to [Applause] hit and here it comes ripped to short snagged on a bounce Lindor out the first and that quickly two away it's such a great feeling when a team can rely on their short stop to make a play like that it builds up confidence for everyone on his team it might even inspire a few more web gims before the game is over all tied up here the bottom half of the eighth [Applause] inning pitch misses there two balls in a [Applause] strike that's a bullet but it goes foul [Applause] two two now ouch that one dren and they get the out after the Ricochet and it's a one two3 inning nothing doing there is still tied at two and two so remaining in the game defensively Donovan Solano taking over as the new short stop now following his pinch hit appearance new arm out of the bullpen Robert Suarez 50th time he's coming into a game this year he's been relied on out of the pen quite a [Applause] bit Starling Marte up toing Mar the pitch and now two balls in a strike Bo he never moved cuz he never had time to with that kind of velocity you'd prefer that pitcher work [Music] [Applause] away two and two to the right side Bogarts with the throw to first and the lead off man retired here in the N that's a huge defensive play in the late stages of the game it might not be the most challenging we've seen today but it needed to be made that's helping your team one down base is empty and that one fouled [Applause] off the onew that one drifts inside man oh man I don't know how you take that pitch that's as close As It Gets goes down looking frustrating end to the abat for the hitter and I'm sure that's going to sit on him for a little while you want to be ready to hit the fast ball sometimes you can overthink things and I think that was the case ball and a swing in a miss and the Mets go one two three offense held in check there hard of the order 345 will get their shot in the bottom of the night we are tied 22 bottom of the nin stepping in for San Diego Jake [Applause] Cronin in the air right field hauls it in one away [Applause] the third baseman number 13 here's Machado Mado B is empty one away here the last half of inning number nine right through there for a strike stirring in the bullpen for the Mets Edwin Diaz the hard throwing righty is up and loosening manah a left-hander also throwing that one ran inside almost got him straighten him up a little bit two two now wouldn't chase that time zand Bogarts in the on deex Circle [Applause] on the ground to third sends it across the first Machado is out well there's a lot riding on that right there nice job of the pitcher to Bear Down make the pitch get the ground ball excellent piece of work and here comes sander Bogarts trying to send this to Extra Innings and a foul ball the pitch inside almost got [Applause] him here comes a pitch bounce to third Vientos sends it to first that's the third out and we're headed to extras three up three down for San Diego score remains 2-2 and we're back on to Extra Innings now Tyrone Taylor [Applause] the two two on the way good job to fight that one off clearly trying to stay back a little bit longer for that change up as he fouls that fast ball back and the righty deals that's towards Center he's under it and there's one down oh he throws it away har Harrison Bader the next to hit well first base open really no reason to pitch to this hitter right here put him on have the force at second first perhaps getting any ending double play Line Drive makes the catch for the second out back to the top of the Mets order Francisco Lindor comes up to the plate kick sandio well if he's going to do something special right here it's going to have to happen with two strikes twoes man on second two downon misses it's a strike out he's in a tough spot had to make a great pitch did it got the strike out gets out of the jam clearly he's happy with those [Applause] results sha manah into the game well has been excellent against left-handed hitters this year and that's his first test this looks like a good move to the runner in scoring position no outs here's the center fielder Jackson merrow man it's second hard ground ball for a base St Runner around third out at the play you really can't argue too much with them sending him home trying to win this ball game in Extra Innings get back into the clubhouse get something to eat get some rest but great defense right there keeps this game alive that is a big time [Music] play so digging in David [Music] [Applause] Peralta and another ball leftand hitter Waits runner on the Move bounced up the middle in plenty of time to First no chance at the double play with the runner in motion now the CCH K Kyle higashioka the next up for the padr this guy's got good power with one squ he can win it for him Smash down the left field line and it stays Fair the winning run crosses the plate and the Padres walk it off an extra innings you know he had to feel the pressure winning run on second base found a way to make solid contact and the winning run comes across to score everyone going crazy exciting finish to this game today 32 the final score a one-run
